Great tips. I really need to put half of my meal in a box before I even start eating when eating out. I usually go online and decide ahead what I will be ordering, that way there are no temptations looking at all those juicy succulent pictures of greasy fattening foods in the menu.

If someone has a problem with you, its their problem not yours!!!

I learned a long time ago to go ahead and divide my meal in about half when I get it. Then, I eat half there and take the rest home. When the meal comes with a starch item and veggies. I have them bring the potato in a to go box at the end of the meal (without any toppings). When that second half looks too tempting -- I try to remember my mom's words about the "starving children in..."(name that location. It makes me laugh!!

We go to the Oar House a lot cuz we love the outdoor dining there. I always order the low sodium crabcake sandwich. I slip a 100 calorie sandwich thin in a baggy in my purse and switch out the bread when my food arrives. My side dish is either green beans or mixed veggies...and I ask for them to be prepared without salt. I get the oar house sauce on the side and just put a little on the sandwich. My treat is MGD 64 or Budlite 55...and I have 2!

This just caught my eye for some reason. One of the things I do when eating out is like what others have suggested and that's go online and look for a menu with nutritional information.

If there isn't one then what I do is try and limit the starchy/sugary stuff. I am diabetic and need to watch that. If we do go somewhere where there is a favorite dish I will go ahead and order it and save 1/2 for lunch the next day or eat it all and make sure I do better at my other meals.

Woohoo! I went out for a family birthday at the Shrimp Basket last night and did really well! Blackened fish (ate half) and veggies (in the right portions)! Stood firm against all the "try it/have some -- you don't need to lose weight" comments. I boxed up the other half of everything and brought it home. My teenage son came home shortly after that and took care of the leftovers for me!!emoticon

I love that you can go online beforehand and look at restaurant menus -- helps me narrow down what I even look at once I'm there. Unfortunately, it also lets me be brutally honest if I don't look beforehand and have to record my bad choices!emoticon

Here's what I ate at Macaroni Grill. I ordered the whole wheat penne pasta with pomodoro sauce on the side. Also had a salad with their Mediterranean dressing on the side. I ate all of the pasta, half of the sauce, all of the salad except the croutons and half of the salad dressing. I also drank tons of water. My calories and sodium look good for the day. I think I did ok, but the scale will measure how well I did for me tomorrow.

I have a business lunch at Macaroni Grill tomorrow...I have looked at their on-line nutrition information and I have a plan. We'll see if I can stick to it.

Eating at 2 styx was a disaster. I ended up ordering a house salad and brought my on wishbone spritzer. It was $4.50 and consisted of about 20 pieces of lettuce, a few shredded carrots and a tiny slice of tomato. Asian food scares me bacause of the sodium in soy sauce.

I ended up going to Chilis for dinner (hubby's idea, not mine). I ate the guiltless chicken sandwich. Ok calorie-wise, but over 2700 mgs of sodium. UGH!!

I am going to 2 Styx on Bayou Blvd on Friday. Not my choice. It is a going away lunch for a co-worker, so I have to go. Oriental food is the hardest for me to choose wisely because of all the sodium. Any suggestions?

I'm with ya Diane...sometimes it is just best to STAY HOME. The parrotheads eat out a lot. When I first joined I gained 20 pounds. I love to hang out with them, but I have to be really careful about the eating.

I didn't see this topic before...hmmmm

I eat out often because the singletons group eats out every Friday, and the only tip I have is ... stay home! I am never good when I go out, and that is one reason I stopped going to the dinners for a few months.

I guess I need some tips!

I always try to order a lunch portion when I eat out, or drink a full glass of water pre-meal.

I also drink a lot during the meal as well, and that limits the amount I can eat before getting full.

Either y'all are shy or you don't want me to know your weight-loss secrets!

I had made a plan to NOT eat out last weekend. Then my pregnant daughter called and wanted to do a family dinner at the Olive Garden on Saturday night. What could I say...she is 9 months pregnant with my granddaughter, people!!!

Here's what I did...and I was only up a half pound the next morning.

1. I looked at their menu on-line and the SP calorie counts for Olive Garden food. I had my food choices pretty much figured out before I got to the restaurant.

2. I asked for a salad with no salad dressing, no cheese, and no olives (olives themselves are not a problem, they are just very salty). I took my own bottle of Wishbone Italian salad spritzer in my purse. (Large purses come in handy.)

3. I did not eat any of the appetizers that others ordered, NOR any pre-meal breadsticks.

4. I ordered one of their "light fare" entrées and asked for whole wheat pasta. I ate only half and took the rest home for lunch the next day (a very hard thing for me to do). I like to be a good girl and clean my plate.

5. I ate one breadstick with my meal, very slowly and enjoyed every bite!

That's it! It worked. I even ate air popped popcorn later in the evening. It's all logged in my food tracker. The only thing I would do differently the next time is ask for the sauce separate from the pasta. They add way too much sauce, in my opinion.

Where do YOU go when you eat out? How do you handle it so you don't gain weight?

Eating out...so much fun, but often a weight-loss detriment.

But...we gotta face it, we're gonna do it from time to time.

Post your eating out tips here. Make it specific to area restaurants or just tips in general!

At some time in the near future, I'd like to plan an "eating out" meeting for the team. Maybe this will give us some good ideas on where to go.
