Breathing. Earlier this week at the peek of one of the hills that I'm now cycling I noticed I was only able to breath in very shallow gasps!!!! It felt like it did when I had pneumonia last year...and it's an awful feeling! Talked to a friend who is a tri-athlete and she mentioned that I need to start sitting up and back a bit when I'm climbing hills to allow my diaphragm to drop and give my lungs space to expand.....hmmm makes sense. It just feels counter-intuitive to lean back a bit when I'm trying to push myself up hill!!!

another hill trick, i have found that if i need to stop on a hill for a break, i can get back on and start up again by riding the bike to the opposite side of the road. then zig-zag back to the other side once you have gotten your balance.
Don't complain about the results you didn't get for the fitness you didn't do!
Pegus, I love the fact that you tried that hill twice before you walked it! That's determination! I'm now eyeing other hills in our area with the same thoughts.....I'll never know if I can do it unless I try!
Congrats! I have the same kind of hill that I finally beat this weekend. The first time I tried it, my heart rate got way too high and I nearly made myself sick. Took me almost 10 min to be able to get back on my bike. I tried the hill several times but have not been able to completely make it. I did Sunday and felt AWESOME!! I, too, am looking forward to trying it again soon.
Only I have the ability to decide how my story will end.

Seaspirit_ I wanted to ride my bike to school this summer when I could dress differently than when school was in session, but it did not happen. If you can make it happen for you, then that would be fabulous. Keep at it no matter what kind of bike you ride!

Good for you Seaspirit! You can do it! What a great goal to be riding home from work! And it really is a wonderful day to unwind before you get home. Riding lets you release all of the tension and frustration from your day. =)

Thanks everyone for the great words of encouragement!!! Tonight after supper I'm tackling that hill again and then hopefully pushing further distance wise afterwards!! (It's bizarre but I'm excited about tonight's ride!) I have a lovely "granny style" globe bike that has 21 gears, suspension in the seat and I can sit upright while I'm riding (which is easier on my neck). I really want to be able to ride home from work starting this fall (I'm back in 1 1/2 weeks) my daughter can drive me to work and then use our vehicle to get herself to school and then to her part time job ~ me? I plan on cruising home unwinding from a day of teaching, pedaling my bike!
Last summer there was a hill that was my challenge point. The first time I tried it, I only made it part way before I had to get off and walk. 2nd time I made it almost to the top before I got off my bike and walked. 3rd and 4th I barely squeaked to the top! And that was it for last year's riding. Fast Forward to today! I've been working up to trying this "Killer Hill" for the last month. Tonight was my first attempt.......AND I DID IT!!!!! I reached the top and was immediately smacked by emotion....wow...I couldn't believe that I actually cranked it up to the top of that hill! I am so proud of myself ....... and ready to go at it again later this week!
