My February Focus on Food probably wasn't the healthiest emoticon

While I was in New Orleans I made no apologies for eating local cuisine & enjoying the fat laden, super yummy foods I found. I did avoid things that were fried, but I had my share of creamy sauces. I did make myself stop eating when I was full. I also chose sushi as dinner two nights. Sashimi (no rice) and a little teriyaki with a clear soup really hit the spot. It was light, yet filling. I'm proud to say I also limited my alcohol intake to one cocktail per day (admitted some were rather LARGE!)

Since I've been back home I started tracking food again, and I'm 3/3 days in my range so far!

I really need to re-assess my food intake paticularly the hidden sodium. I am just losing too slowly. I am going to WW and I have lost 10 lbs but it has taken 7 weeks.....too long for me.
I have been limited in exercising due to a health issue but that is better and I can pick up on the exercise so I need to make sure I am getting my daily nutrients. Hope everyone is doing well.

Welcome to the team, Michele!

Anyone else thinking "Super Bowl food" might be an issue for sodium? I know dh and the kids will order pizza. I am on the fence about ordering a thin crust veggie. If I don't I am afraid I will eat their meat loaded, hand-tossed crust which is also loaded with garlic and salt. I know it will be worse if I don't do the veggie and give in to what they have.

I did buy a ton of fruits and veggies and will be putting together trays of each. In addition to the typical apples, grapes, pears, bananas, celery, and carrots, I also have cauliflower, nectarines, plums, kiwi, pummelo, and ugli fruit! Plus I tried and bought some hummus yesterday, and have several different kinds of canned and frozen fruits that I can mix with yogurt (feels like a treat, but it is healthy!) I plan to have salads for lunch, and have lots of baby spinach and romaine lettuce and all the fixings for a delicious salad.

What is your game plan?

emoticon I just joined the team a few minutes ago & like this challenge.

Sodium isn't really a problem for me. My husband had a heart attack 7 months ago & I no longer buy prepackaged items or, I should say, I buy VERY FEW prepackaged items. I add NO salt to the foods, all herbs & seasonings, and generally use fresh produce.

I also opened an acct for him here. He's not interested in being active on SP so I just track his food, to keep an eye on his sodium levels, as well. So far so good, with just a few hiccups. :) His doctor has told him that he needs to gain weight, in a healtthy way.

So I'll continue to track it and keep an eye on it.

I started focusing on sodium over the summer. If I take in more than 1,000-1500mg a day, I can tell it on the scale. I don't have time anymore to track all my food, but I am very conscious of how much sodium is in the foods I eat. Thankful that had become a habit before I started working in September!

What a great idea to refocus! Lately I have been on a healthy soup kick for lunches because it is so easy to just grab that, a piece of fruit, and yogurt and toss it in my lunchbox. Soup obviously is not the best for low sodium, so I think I will make more of an effort to steer away from doing that too frequently.

Will there be a layout or point system like January's challenge had? Maybe I just didn't see it yet. I liked having a guideline to follow emoticon

Great! I too make my fitness tracker public. However, I keep my nutrition tracker private as I am probably one of the few at odds with 99% of the folks on Spark... as a few have read in earlier posts, I am training for a figure competition, but I am not in a cutting in phase right now, but a muscle/mass building phase. Based on my BMR and workouts, I eat about 2700 calories a day.
WOW. Right. Doing this for 4 months, I have gained weight, but not fat, in fact, I have lost fat and gained lean body mass...

SO, all i am trying to say, it is very important what you eat. My calories aren't mcdonalds and constant fat food. Its healthy proteins, fruits and veggies.

This is a great Challenge and very important for my goals.

This is definitly something I'm interested in. During Jan. I started keeping a paper journal of all my food choices to remind myself what I was eating and not only the choices but the calories that go with them. I keep it on paper because sometimes it is too easy for me to forget to log on the computer... but often times I will input it at the end of the day.
I would say sodium should definitly be a focus. The last two times I went to the doctor had high blood pressure, it runs in my family but I need to try to help it as much as I can! :)

JESSLHT makes an excellent point! A 100 calorie apple has fiber and other nutrients that you need! 100 calorie twinkie does not!

My food tracker is public as is my fitness tracker. Feel free to snoop!

I love that February is about nutrition. When making a choice between a 100 calorie pack of oh, I don't know, Oreo cakesters and a 100 calorie apple I usually pick the cakesters. I'm trying to be more aware of those types of choices so I can pick the real food. Thanks for this month's habit!

Hello team! January was the month to jumpstart your nutrition and fitness plan and now February is the month to REALLY focus on the food that you're eating and how it is either helping or hindering your weight loss or maintainence goals. Track your food every day and pay attention to that sodium. If you're eating a lot of prepared foods you might be sabotaging yourself with too much sodium.

In the month of January I tracked my food and my calories burned everyday and used the Daily Calorie Differential report to see how I was doing. Remember one pound is 3,500 calories. As of yesterday I had 30,205 calories in the bank which means I should have lost 8.6 pounds for the month. On January 1st I weighed 188 pounds. Yesterday I weighed 179.4 pounds. Excatly 8.6 pounds lost! It really works! I've updated my blog about math and weight loss and reposted it today. Check it out for more information.

Feel free to reply to this thread often throughout the month and let us know how you're doing with your FOCUS ON FOOD!
