As long as you get out there and hike enjoy the experience no matter how far you go. If you get the whole trail done at once, then that's fantastic but whatever you can get done this go round will be fantastic too!

Revising my AT through hike approach. Am stuck in San Francisco baby sitting a house remodel. If I can get out of here by summer, I'll join the bulk of northbound hikers and promise myself 100 miles. If I accomplish that, 100 more, and so on, until I reach Katahdin. Then, back to where I joined the trail, and head south, 100 miles at a time, until I reach Springer. Might be a little late in the year, but Springer does not close like Katahdin, so timing will not be such an issue. The 100 mile thing is to allow me to say that I've walked 100 miles, or 500 miles, or whatever, or maybe I 'll be able to say I hiked the whole thing. But if I do get the the trail this year, I'll take pleasure in what I can do and not worry that I may fail to do the whole thing at once.

That should be a lot of fun. I never thought I'd see the day when I said hiking was fun - I love it but there's nothing here in western KY that fits the bill. I have to wait until I visit my brother in NE TN every year.

I realized there are so many great trails in our area and with my husband's schedule I can plan trips for his off days. Riverwalk, Phinizy swamp, bartram trail, etc

Tomorrow, I'm going to use the treadmill because its suppose to rain again emoticon

The possibilities always outnumber the problems.

We were going to go to Magnolia Springs or Watson Mill Bridge (Ga.) but heard it is suppose to rain. Maybe in two weeks we will be going. My husband loves to look at the turtles at Magnolia Springs and I like the water at Watson Mill Bridge.

I'm on the plains but about 20 miles from the foothills of the Colorado part of the Rockies. After a super hike last weekend on the western slope we decided we want to hike at least a couple of times a month. We are so blessed to have many well-kept trails in our area.

Keep an eye out for the free admission days to the state parks, too. Which reminds me, I need to get the dates for the rest of the year. emoticon

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I might get to go back to Carvers Gap again next month before we head to Florida. I've mentioned it to my brother so I think it might be a possibility. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Okay y'all on June 23, 2012 I went out on the Appalachian Trail at Carvers Gap on Roan Mountain in Tennessee. This was my first attempt at the AT. My brother's been up there numerous times and there are three knobs there that he's done. I made it up to the 2nd knob but my knees failed me on the steps at the start of that climb. Darn arthritis and knee reconstruction surgery years ago. Oh well, I accomplished that first knob with minimal problems so I was thrilled at that. Maybe next summer for that 2nd knob or maybe all 3 - I don't know yet but that's my next goal.

Ramona - I'm a bit of a clutz myself but the plan is to drop some of this excess weight and work on strength training especially balance and flexibility and we shall see how it goes....

My first goal is to get to the point that the treck up the slope in our back yard from the dock and then up the double-level back deck does not leave me gasping as though I had hiked up Mt Washington....LOL!

Also to increase endurance for walking/ hiking the local area...

Will take pics of any actual 'trail hikes' I manage and we will see if the trip to Amicola Falls works out this fall.

I know in the past when my brother and I have ventured out in E TN finding a parking place is a huge problem because so many people are hiking the AT especially in the Smoky Mountains. This summer will definitely be interesting for me actually to try out the AT at Carvers Gap, TN. Maybe by the end of June I'll have some other sections or trails to add to the list of things to do! My brother and I look for places to go all the time. He'll hear about something and call me to look it up online.
We always have to factor in my klutziness on our trails. Some I just can't handle because of balance issues. I certainly don't need any accidents. When I get in better shape it'll be a lot more interesting.
Thanks for all the information. Please keep it coming!

I'm here in middle Georgia a few hours from Amicola Falls -

I'm making plans for at least one visit to Amicola State Park this fall for a day and/ or weekend of hiking.

In the meantime my hiking will be around my hilly neighborhood, and two state parks and a private reserve that has 13+ miles of wooded trails....hoping to take pictures/ videos and will VBlog them im my Spatk blog if I get some footage.

Where are some places you plan to walk/ hike while training/ planning to hike the AT?
