I snack pretty bad at work. So i try to stock my snack drawer with healthier choices. In the beginning the biggest challenge was our candy jar. I have a large drawer packed full of candy, and my job is to keep the jar full, without eating it all. And when i say Candy, i mean, candy bars, fruity candy, chocolate candy, mints, hard candy....everything. I have been doing great staying away from it. But i noticed my healthy drawer of snacks keeps changing into junk. Any suggestions

We (the office Wellness Committee) recently started the sale of healthy snacks in the office. We had a second hand bar size fridge donated to us and stocked it with healthy snacks such as yogurt, apples, oranges, cheese, fruit juices, apple sauce, chocolate milk and have baskets of small packet size almonds, granola bars, bananas. I'm in charge of stocking fridge this month and I've been getting alot of positive feedback. Staff love having this option. Items are priced very close to cost (some inflation for spoilage). There are 4 of us taking turns to keep items stocked. Initial setup costs were paid for by our Wellness budget but continuation of this program will be funded by sale of items (self-sustaining we hope). It doesn't really take up any room either. We have a little corner of our kitchen where we put a table with fridge on top and baskets of bars, almonds and bananas on top of that.

If you think this is something your office could benefit from get some of your coworkers together and make it happen.

Hi, I know what its like getting ready in the morning, and rushing around trying to pack some healthy snacks for the day. I rely on the following:
banana
small tub greek yoghurt (I buy lemon Liberte brand)
panda black licorice (100 cals low fat)
small container of strawberry soy milk
small container of chocolate almond milk
bounce protein bar (not sure its available in States, I live in Canada). Quality of protein bars vary so do some research before you start loading up on these.

I'm getting better about keeping healthier snacks at work; fruit, veggies, nutrigrain bars, green tea and lots of water! As long as no one brings in junk food I do pretty well. We have a client who likes to bring us in amazing baked goods from a local bakery, and my will-power doesn't hold out when I know those are around!

I go for the snacks at work when I am a little stressed, procrastinating, or antsy. I found keeping mint gum handy helps along with a short walk to refill my water bottle. I tell myself that I can have the gum after I finish the water (I hate drinking water with mint). Then I have to get up again to make a bathroom run!

I definitely snack at the office, but I pack my own snacks in. There is no vending machine here. Sometimes there is candy from leftover meetings, and unfortunately I found out where my coworker hid it. We also have a Starbucks up the street, and I have been trying to cut back on going there, but I lunch I like to sit somewhere and read, and Starbucks seems like a good choice.

This is the perfect group for me. I've worked in offices for over 25 years. Right now I'm a food and bond purchaser for a ship supply company. It's a very relaxed office and someone is always bringing in snacks. Cookies, cake, jalapeno cornbread, pork buns, chips and the usual bagels, donuts etc.

I hardly ever bring any snacks into the office but there is just always something there and my habit has been to just grab one or two or four.

I've been on a diet since may and I've lost 40 lbs. I'm on meal replacement so it's easy to pass up all those snacks. But when I transition back to food I don't want these snacks to once again become bad habits. I plan to eat 6 small meals per day: breakfast, lunch and dinner and 3 snacks. But I need healthy snacks. But I want them to be good. I'm not into rice cakes. Any ideas?

The snack issue is tough for me because I work in the convenience food industry and it's my job to scout out new products. I have meetings with vendors on a regular basis who leave snacks (full size samples) like potato chips, flavored popcorn, chocolate, energy drinks, etc. in my office so I can decide if they are good. What happens is I end up with a stash of snacks that is tempting me all the time! I share with others in the office, of course, and I can't make myself throw them out without trying them. So yes, I do snack at the office!

I snack on fruit, small amounts of trail mix (dark chocolate, almonds, walnuts, raisins, dried cranberries), and those individual cheese sticks. Not all at the same time; throughout the course of the day. And of course there is my water; drink lots of that!

I do snack but I bring in my snacks to work. This saves me money from the vending machines, helps me control my portions, and allows me to have healthy snacks throughout the day.

I get up from my desk and head straight for the office kitchen to break the stress. Not a good plan--I snack a lot. Trying to break that habit--as of today. I have to retrain my brain to walk down the hall and then grab a stick of gum.

oh my goodness. I snack from the vending machine if I don't get a good lunch..My problem...eating out...(or in) the girls here like to have the "gourmet" restaurant in town..probably the best food, but the worst for you!!! So, MY goal...this next week (cause it's payday week and I get to go to the store) is to plan my snacks and lunches...tired of feeling cruddy due to the food choices

I'm certainly a snacker. I'm not on a diet, though.

Our vending machine currently has a glitch or something that makes $1.25 Pop Tarts only .50, so I eat those, usually. haha.

Although I snack at work, now I keep fruit on my desk so that it's the first thing I reach for instead of junk food. Seems to be working out pretty good....except for when I get that salty craving. Then all bets are off!!

I snack at work. It's out of boredom. If I am busy, I don't even think of snacking. The worse time is right after Christmas. Before Christmas if the office gets any goodies brought in, the bosses scoop it up and take them home. After the holidays, all the staff start to bring in all the candies, left over baking, and snacks that they want to get out of their houses because they vow to get fit and loose weight every January 1st. lol Problem is that they all avoid the office as much as possible for a while until they think it's gone. I am alone in the office.... bored....

I absolutely snack at the office. I keep cashews and granola thins in my desk for just in case munchies. When I pack my lunch I always bring a small snack for midmorning and afternoon. Things such as a yocrunch, veggies, or some kind of fruit.

yes and not when I am hungry--when I am tense. There is often something chocolate within sight and that's what I go for and If there isn't, I go to the people who I know keep stuff in their desks and beg for chocolate!!! Any ideas to avoid this-I get frustrated that the calories are empty calories and I know it's a stress thing. Alternative snacks don't work for me so far. I just have that, then go looking for chocolate!

I have made a new snack drawer at my desk filled with microwave popcorn, granola bars, oatmeal packs, raisins, and peanut butter. This way when I get hungry or that candy dish is too tempting I can just pick something out from my healthy choices. I also keep a box of green tea and stevia for those times I am craving a sweet drink like a diet coke.

I ususally have atleast one snack at the office. I have it in the afternoon to get me through until dinner time. I have a stash of almonds, raisins, peanut butter, and crackers at my desk. However there is a produce stand on the ground floor of my office building, so there is an abundance of healthy choices there. He even sells fresh popped popcorn and raw nuts.

I work 10 hour days and have 2 planned snacks (added them to my google calendar so my phone will ding at me). As long as I'm not in a meeting or something I hit both.

As far as what I eat... protein bars, peanuts, etc. Occasionally have something sweet, but try and avoid it. Receptionist keeps putting out a bowl full of sugar covered black licorice... too tempting to not eat :S

I am most definitely a snacker, at work. not so much at home. not nearly the amount of stress at home as at work. i have my dogs and DH to help me at home, so i can distract myself by petting my dogs when i am stressed at home. I can talk with DH when i am at home. at work, i do plan on mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. usually yogurt in the morning and something crunchy in the afternoon.

I always bring a morning snack and an afternoon snack. Usually a carb for the morning, and fruit or yogurt for the afternoon.

We have a small office, and nobody really brings in treats anymore. There are two other women who, well, I'm not sure if they're both dieting or what, but they don't seem to appreciate any baked goods etc. The last time I brought something in, it was homemade donuts, which I make once in a blue moon. They gave me the feeling that I was trying to poison them. And yet they'll go out and buy these loaded sub sandwiches that are probably 1,000+ calories, not to mention the flavored creamers they pour into their coffees. I decided after that - never again. I'll keep my treats to myself, and share my baking with our two maintenance guys.

I've never been a snacker, but when put on a 1200 calorie diet (intake, plan, however you want to look at it), I HAVE to have a mid-morning snack. I keep almonds and the no sugar added applesauce at my desk. The applesauce are the portioned cups, and the almonds I keep in a resealable bag with a measure scoop so I'm only taking an ounce when I have some. It helps me stay focused on work and not on my hunger. Plus the almonds have protein (that I'm finding a hard time getting in).

I have an easy time staying away from the community snack table. BUT there are always a few people in the office who go around with their unhealthy snacks and offer them. I have a hard time waying NO when it is right there. I need to work on not giving in when snacks are brought to me.

Yes, but I have learned to stay away from the community snack table. I make sure to pack 2 healthy snacks (usually fruit) or homemade trail mix to get my though the day. Since I am not following a specific diet plan and just learning to eat portions I promised myself that I would only indulge in birthday goodies if it were Cheesecake. So far this is working out great since cheesecake is rare. :D

I do a good job of staying away from the donuts and rolls, etc. co-workers bring in to share, but I do keep Hersheys dark chocolate kisses at my desk. I pop too many of them during the day at my computer. They aren't messy - that's my criteria.

When I was pregnant and breastfeeding I snacked all the time. I had to. Now that I'm done (and have been for a few years) it's really hard to change those habits. I do try to avoid snacking but I find my energy drops a bit from time to time and I am reaching for something. Sometimes it's a good something and sometimes it's not. The trick is of course to have a good something handy so that I stay away from the bad somethings.

yes, I have one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Its generally either fruit or yogurt, sometimes some nuts (eventhough I work with a few). Generally its something small to hold me until lunch or until dinner.

You should stand for something or you will fall for anything.

I have a planned snack in the afternoon, and also bring fruit or yogurt for a morning snack if I happen to be hungry. Morning snacks are hit or miss - some days I'm hungry at about 10 and other days, I'm not I don't know why I can go all morning without a snack, but if I don't snack in the afternoon, I'm starving and cranky by dinner.

I snack if I plan ahead. I usually munch on carrot sticks, pudding, yogurt, or fruit.

I am not really a snacker and never have been, but I find that I get consumed with what I'm working on and often miss lunch. So I went to Big Lots and got an air tight 5-quart container and started packing a weekly snack box with things I could grab at the desk. This has worked well for me. Like IMLOSINGIT9 said in her post, I found that the one or two snacks throughout the day actually balanced my mood and helped me shed stress. I am also finding that the periodic snack makes me not want to eat as much when I do go to lunch, or at dinner time.

So the moral of my post is...plan your snack attack and pack a snack box for the office.

Good thread ya'll are running. I am learning a lot from you pro's.

I definitely have a planned mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack which keeps me from mindless snacking in the office (which I used to do before I started SP). I also have three solid meals per day so that has helped me to eliminate emotional and mindless snacking at different times of the day. I take my lunch to work now which also keeps me on track.

...Now if I can only convince my boss and office mates to get rid of the chocolate bowls and junk food tubs in the office kitchen. I'm glad I've stopped those bad habits!

Irish, if I were going to snack, your popcorn trick sounds like a great solution!!! Thanks for sharing that. I've been thinking about making popcorn before bed lately. Watching TV for a few minutes in the evening with a little (healthy) bowl of popcorn sounds positively decadent. :)

YES YES YES!

Yes, I snack at the office... I would go nuts if I didn't with all the goodies and crud around...

With that said... my snacking habits have DEFINITELY changed...

I bring air popped popcorn EVERY DAY to work - sprayed with "I Can't Believe Its Not Butter) and some special "gourmet" seasoning (aka whatever strikes my fancy in the spice cabinet lol). I bring 6 cups of my special popcorn every day to work and snack througout the day with my water - I require that for every cup of popcorn I drink 2 cups of water (easy enough!) - plus all that water has the "added bonus" of sending me for a "mini walk" down to the ladies room a few times a day, so I get off my tushy!

6 cups of popcorn with the butter spray and seasonings = 184 calories, 2 g fat, 38 carbs, 6 protein = not a bad trade off considering just one of those gooey pastries in the kitchen are gonna send me down a sugar trail I just don't even want to start!

If I don't eat my popcorn, no biggie.. I put it out in the kitchen (HA!) and it's always gone by the time it's time to go home.

You have to find what works for you. No one has the magical arrangement that works for everyone. This works for me, so I'm going to run with it...

Keep moving forward and thrive everyone!

I just remembered when I stopped snacking. I read about the idea in a book called "The Martini Diet." She suggested in that book that snacking was gauche, that elegant people wouldn't be caught dead walking around with a donut and coffee. LOL

It was a funny book, and actually she made some good points that somehow have continued to work for me. Like eat rich foods, but just a little. That snacking thing stuck in my brain however! ;)

I am a snacker. I prefer a lot of small meals during the day. That can be dangerous at the office where all sorts of unhealthy foods abound.

To keep the junk food away, I make sure to have a bunch of 100-calorie snack packs in my office drawer at all times. I can usually eat one and that will tide me over until my next meal.

I've been on a lot of diets in the past, but this time I'm not dieting. I'm still losing weight, albeit slowly, but instead of having a diet plan telling me what foods to eat, I'm trying to use good common sense to limit eating the junk I shouldn't and incorporate more healthy foods into the mix. The Sparkpeople website & iPhone app have been so helpful in that regard. I feel great, not at all sorry for myself because I'm on a diet. ;)

I don't naturally snack, however. Even when I'm eating out of control, I'm not a big snacker. I like to have three good meals everyday and that's it. Most of the time at work there is no time for a snack anyway, which is fine with me because I don't want one.

I've heard all kinds of stuff about blood sugars and how you need a snack mid-morning and mid-afternoon. What do you think about that? Are you a snacker? What do you snack on? What if you don't have time to snack?
