I'm on a roll to go to the pool everyday, unless there is a T-storm or a H blowing through - those are not safe or healthy times to go to the outdoor pool and we don't have indoor pools here.
So I've got a streak going. Today was day 2 and I've done my pool thing today. Tomorrow I have plans to go with my friends and DH, so day three is already to go on the books, too. I know it's only 3 days, but that's a streak I've got going and I'm proud of it. Can you imagine how proud I will be when it's 100 days, or 200 days, or 500 days?
Have a great one!

Therapy Thursday for me is doing something to make me feel better. Right now, my housework is behind so I'm vacuuming the bedroom, which also means dusting, and other general cleanup. Got it halfway done, now I can go finish and really feel happy again.

Update - 05.14.13 Still doing the weighing/measuring/tracking of the food and it is helping me get to my ultimate goal of using the food tracker all the time. Anything that works is worth it, as far as I'm concerned.

Happy Mother's Day and here's a challenge to anyone that want's to take it on. I've accepted a challenge from a friend struggling, like I am, to weight/measure her food and track each meal as it comes, including the snacks. I'm going at for 1 week starting today, Sunday, 05.12.13 and going through Saturday, 05.18.13. If you want to join me, send let me know. I'd love some SparkFriends to join me in this little "after the challenge, challenge".

Wow, it's been a fast 8 weeks. I haven't lost any weight, but that's not a big surprise since I've been on a plateau for months now. I won't have my A1C redone for a couple of months yet, so I don't know where I stand with that. I can say that I find myself making better choices without thinking about it a lot or arguing with myself, which makes life less stressful. I have certainly increased the length and intensity of my daily workouts. I can feel that I'm stronger in everything I do. With summer on the doorstep, that's great. I'm hoping I don't forget what I've learned, because it is all good life lessons. I also relate a bit better to my body and what is going on with it. I feel more open-minded about making the necessary changes to keep myself healthy. Thank you!

Hi Everyone!
I am nearing the end of my 8 weeks. I am just about there, and about to start on a new 8 week adventure. I know I have been quiet for a while, but I have been doing the work. This challenge hasn't been without it's setbacks, but I think overall I've done very well.
According to my Docs scale, my weight is down 13 pounds. My A1C dropped from 9.7 - 8 since starting insulin. This is really good and encouraging. I have decided to use my doctor's visits (every 2-3 months) as my official weigh in and A1C numbers.
Hope everyone is doing well, and best of luck.

It's something we all need here and there, even winners need the encouragement and support. It just helps in little ways and sometimes, strange ways. I have always felt that when you get past one tough spot, turn around and help others struggling there, too. You can talk off again when there's a huge gap in the crowd crawling over the mess.
Have a great one!

ROX TRY - keep going. Some of us take longer to learn things or struggle with things longer than others. That's okay cuz we learn them better.
I had a problem with fruits and veggies, too. To me a serving was the whole thing. Like an entire orange or apple. But a serving might only be half, which is a lot easier to do, for me anyway. I could cut the thing in half and not be overwhelmed with the entire thing staring at me, as I'm not real big on all fruits (Strawberries are a different thing entirely). Anyway, half for breakfast or snack in the am and the other half later in the day.
Veggies were what I learned as a kid - an entire plate of them. My mom loved veggies and grew them and when they were harvested, we had a plate load of whatever, except if we absolutely hated them and my mom didn't grow them, like asperigus. But we had to have one and my mom did not buy thin ones, they were all as huge as your thumb and cooked in a pressure cooker until we called the green slugs. They were disgusting and now that I know better, I understand they had absolutely no nutritional value at all. But eating a plate load of a veggie is not a serving either so once I learned a serving, it was a lot easier for me to eat them.
It's also easy for me to dream up any excuse not to go do the fitness things I have planned for myself, unless I go first thing in the am. It took me a while a few years ago to figure out my schedule and I would get out of bed at 6am, go for a mile walk, then come home and eat breakfast, make my lunch to go, plus snacks, and my husband's, too, then go shower, etc. I was at work at 8am. I worked my mile into a 20 minute length from a 30 minute length in the beginning.
So if you make your plans and work on them, you can get yourself where you know you have to be in order to accomplish your goals. Keep working on it. Giving up is not an option! I know you will do it!

For me, this HAS been a "challenge". I still struggle with trying to make time to exercise as I should. It seems so much easier for me to make other things a priority. As far as veggies... I REALLY upped them during these past 8 weeks. But, sometimes it is still difficult for me to get in 5 servings of veggies per day. If I include fruits and veggies, then no problem. Otherwise... hmmm... yeah... somewhat of a prob. some days. And though I have been relatively "good" overall, I did pretty much JUMP off the wagon yesterday. Actually, I was SOOOOOO bad that I'm not sure but what I gained back any weight I might have lost. (I'm weighing in on May 1st)... (And, YES!!!! I actually DID eat THAT MUCH!) HOWEVER, I am glad for the things I have learned during this challenge and DO plan on continuing to try even harder to implement the things I have learned. I do believe if I continue doing this, I WILL be able to reach my goals. It may take a while, but as long as I'm heading in the right direction... it's all good! Spark on everyone!!! I wish us ALL the best!!!

Today I finish the eight week challenge! I have lost 7 pounds which is a pound less than my original goal. More importantly fairly early in the challenge my BS's improved enough to get off insulin and have stayed within normal limits! I am doing more physically every day; I am wearing clothes I hadn't been able to wear since last summer, and I can see a real difference already in how I look and feel. I really havn't felt deprived with the nutrition plan and in fact have trouble eating 1200 calories/day.

Today is motivation Monday! Are you motivated to make today the start of a successful week? Are you motivated by having your meals planned and logged into the food tracker or are you standing in front of an open refrigerator wondering what to eat, like a little kid hoping the food fairy flies by and changes what you see? Push yourself into a planned lifestyle. Good lifestyles don't just happen, they are planned and worked on and they hum because you make them that way.
Make your attitude a successful one and you will be successful!
because you are

Hi All. Have just finished challenge and did not lose weight, not an ounce and I was a diligent food tracker and upped my exercise significantly. As frustrating as that is, here are the positives. I now jog up the stairs instead of huffing and puffing. When I walk to music its jazzy, upbeat songs to get my speed up. Every morning I test FBS and my numbers for the last 7 weeks have been very, very stable. AND HERE IS THE BEST ONE...TODAY A CO-WORKER SAID, R U LOSING WEIGHT? I have not heard that question for years. So maybe the challenge name is wrong. Maybe it is not a weight loss challenge as much as it is a regaining control challenge. Like others I learned so much over the past weeks, thanks SP.

Another day of workouts, healthy eating, and planning. Have a great one!
Author of a published novel, The Double K Ranch! From Seattle, WA now living in central FL on the Gulf Coast!
I took the challenge and then upped it by adding more to the exercises every week, if only a few minutes, and then adding another day to the tracking until I reached a daily food tracking, not just 3 days a week. So I'm really happy with that, too.
I was told by the doctor that I didn't need to do the daily blood sugar testing so I had stopped, but just for "fun" I'm back to doing it once a day. Helps me adjust my eating habits and that's the name of the game at this point - just keep trying to make it better. Losing weight is one help, eating the right foods is another help, and doing exercise every day is the best help.
Have a great one!

This has been a great Challenge and I have learned so much about myself and getting healthy by tracking my food and exercise. Doing Meal Planning seems to be a real bonus. I just received 2 books I ordered from the American Diabetes Association the first is on Meal Planning and Portion Sizes. And the 2nd book is by Dr. Furhman, "The End of Diabetes" I'm looking forward to continued success and gaining lots of new knowledge. Wishing ALL the very BEST to everyone in this Challenge. Paula

I made it! Finished the challenge! Well done ME!! I have learned a lot and plan on applying what I have learned to the next stage of the journey. I will change somethings but keep the rest. This challenge helped me to find the calorie range that works best for me;the amount and intensity of the exercise that I require to lose weight ; the types of exercise that suit my abilities and interest; the importance of tracking food and activity on a regular basis and the importance of keeping in touch with the team. I am lighter and stronger mentally and physically. I have gained a huge step up in uncovering what I am capable of and I now have the tools to continue the journey with SP. I have a long way to go yet. But I am on my way......... Looking for a new challenge to get me to the next level.

I can't get it to work on my computer. It just sits there making clicking sounds. It does work on the DHs so I'll use it on his. Screen isn't as large, but it's okay.

Just touching base. Peeps/grandpeeps are still here. I succumbed a bit to peer pressure and group eating, but haven't fully immersed myself into it. Can't weigh because somebody is sleeping with my scale, and I'm downstairs on the hide-a-bed not sleeping at all. 3-year-olds are wicked. It's been a great week, and I thought I was looking forward to seeing their backsides until I just read that. Once I get a good-nights sleep, I will miss them sorely, and I will repeat Week 8.

I guess this is the end of this challenge - perhaps there is a diabetes group for me to discover and it seems to be Spark D. Anyway, thanks to this group for your support, I was able to survive Easter without consuming any of the sugary confections (PEEPS) I had previously obsessed over. Now, you don't do that alone. My confidence and results speak for themselves though I know there will always be a mountain in front of me to climb. I have noticed when I slip up I have greater strength to get going again. My best to everyone. Stay in touch if you can. I'd like that.
I've got my Spark back and I am so happy, like I'm doing the Snoopy Dance. Anyway, I think I got my spark back due to this challenge so I'm not willing to really let go of it even though I checked off my last week and got my trophy, I'm still going to hang around and revisit the challenge to help myself along my trail. I've picked up some new friends along the way, too and I hope we can get together often and talk about our stumbles and our successes because it all works to retrain our brains and the rest of our beings, too.
Have a Great April and a wonderful First!

One thing about Florida is the huge strawberries that start around February. This farm we go to sells for commercial so it's huge, but so are the strawberries. They have the crews in that pick truck loads of strawberries in a morning for the first month, then they open the fields up for the public to come in and pick. The idea, I think, is the public get what's left, the "second" crop so to speak, but those berries are huge, literally filling up my hand. We were surprised as they just opened the field to the public last Saturday - it was a late Public opening. We picked a bunch of berries, big ones, some a bit to ripe, but you fill your buckets so fast. Then when we went back yesterday, the fields had been stripped of the berrie plants and there was one small field (about 10 acres) of berries left. We picked a bunch, 26 quarts at 50 cents each quart. We are still working on them. I made a batch of strawberry syrup yesterday and today I'll make some jam (couple batches) and maybe some more syrup and a Strawberry Chiffon Pie, Strawberry Chiffon Parfaits and probably a strawberry-rubbarb pie for the DH. Trying to come up with ways to use strawberries, but we want to slice and freeze a bunch of them too so we have them all year long. And he wants to go back next Wednesday and get more? I think I'm putting my foot down. The cleaning and work on them takes four times the amount of time to pick them and neither of us can stand to long so it's kinda silly to go get more.
Anyway, Happy Easter!

Have a Happy Easter Day tomorrow all. I'm looking forward to a relaxing day of making strawberry jam and other things. Picked 26 quarts of strawberries today and then cleaned them and did some syrup and some other stuff. But I feel a good tired so I'm off for a nice rest and more strawberries tomorrow.

Thanks EGGBASKET1 ! When I make my meal plan, I have to write it out so the DH can see it, too. He's better at making out the grocery list than I am so I mostly leave that to him. But I have even done my meal plan into the food tracker and it helps there too. However, it is time consuming to sit and do a weeks worth of food tracking at a time. When my doctor asked me what I was eating, I only had a few notes written all over the place in a small calendar I carry with me and when he wanted to know the times, where, and how hungry I was when I ate, I couldn't tell him, so another reason for writing down my food tracker before putting it on SP. I can write down where, time, and my hunger, which goes like this: 1 = not hungry 2 = slightly hungry 3 = hungry 4 = Very hungry 5 = I'll eat anything that doesn't move out of my way fast enough!
I know what he's going after now so I can help myself stay in the 1 - 2 range. I'm also learning about my cravings. I can ignore them for 5 minutes and longer by doing something physical; like some exercise, or clean a cupboard/closet for a few minutes. Occasionally, I'm short on something. I'm trying to stay away from several things, caffeine is one. yesterday, I had a near blackout headache and finally figured out it was low on caffeine. So got a little caffeine and it was gone. Anyway, Learning is good - so I'm planning on hanging around here for a little while longer in case I want to go back and redo a part or train harder on some aspect. It's easier to go back and find it if I keep the team on my list.
Have a good one and thanks for your support and encouragement. I lost a tiny more than 1 pound since Monday. Onward!

FLORIDA GHOST... THANKS ! SOMETIMES A RESTART IS MORE LIKE A REFRESHER AND ALSO HAVING THE SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE OF STICKING TO A SEQUENTIAL PLAN. I LIKE YOUR IDEA OF WRITING IT DOWN AND THEN TRACKING ON LINE, THAT WAY WE CAN SEE ALL THE CARBS, PROTEINS, FATS ETC WHEN WE RUN A REPORT. I DO LIKE THAT REPORT. YES, MEAL PLANNING IS ONE OF MY DOWN FALLS TOO. I NEVER QUITE KNOW WHAT TO FIX. I THINK I WILL GIVE THAT A TRY TO MAKE OUT MY MEAL PLAN FOR THE WEEK FOLLOWED WITH A GROCERY LIST. THANKS FOR THE GREAT TIPS !!! IF WE STICK TO THE MEAL PLAN IT WOULD BE EASIER TO TRACK SINCE IT IS ALREADY WRITTEN DOWN ! STAY POSITIVE, MOTIVATED, PERSISTENT AND CONSISTENT AND YES, DETERMINATION IS THE KEY ! WE CAN DO THIS ! HUGS...EGG

EGGBASKET1 - congrats on the weight loss. I believe even an ounce is a loss worthy of encouragement. Right now I'm working on so many challenges I had to start a Goals Log so I could keep track of them all and not have to restart the training. It is normal to have to restart more than once, and I'm determined to not have restart all of them several times, so the log helps.
I'm planning on hanging around here for awhile yet as I want to get some of my challenges or goals completed before just letting go. On the other hand, restarting the challenge would be alright, but I have come far enough in the place I needed most help on, the food tracker. I've been working on it and I found for me, it's easier if I write it down in a notebook I carry with me, then when I get time, I put it on my food tracker and I haven't forgotten what I ate.
One of my biggest challenges is the meal planning and STICKING TO IT. I was just planning dinner, but I needed to do the entire day. So I do the meal planning for the week, Sunday through Saturday, and then work to stick to it. My hardest part now is not the keeping track, but the sticking to plan. But determination is key for me and I will get there.
Have a good one.

I'm still working on this challenge. I have come a long way, but I plan on continuing this challenge so that I do the food tracker everyday, get back to doing exercise everyday, and eat less. I'm eating the right foods, just far to much of it so portion control is my thing.
I'm working on many things right now so I'm just going to hang out on this week for as long as I have to in order to accomplish all the things I want to accomplish.
Have a great one!

Sparkpeople has changed my life! Over the 8 week course I lost 20 lbs. and my fasting blood sugars are running around 100. I started this challenge after being told that I was pre-diabetic but if I made changes I could significantly reduce the chance of becoming type 2 diabetic. I began exercising and have found that I actually like it. I'm doing about 35 minutes (6.7 miles) on my exercise bike 5 days a week and 3-4 days of 25 minute pilates sessions at home. I feel weird NOT exercising now! I look better and feel better, and I can move around easier. The transformation has been so amazing that I'm going to keep going! The whole family is eating healthier, and there's been surprisingly few grumbles about it. Thank you Sparkpeople!

LOL...I signed up for the challenge, then never understood how to get to the messages. Still, I've done okay, lost some weight, upped my cardio from 0 to 40 minutes a day, sometimes 60, and FBS now runs 86 vs. low 103.

Wow! Lilybelle...30 pounds!
I have lost 16 pounds so far, and my blood sugar readings have gone from around 6.4 (pre-diabetic - for years now), into the normal range of 3.7 to 5.8. (5.5 this morning) I have exercised almost every day, or at least was more active daily. I am motivated and have learned from these weekly challenges and information. I am almost done Week 8, and feel 100% better than when I began.

I have lost nearly 30 lbs in the 8 weeks, and gained a whole new way to look at nutrition and eating. I have also found some exercises I can do despite my severe physical disabilities.

Thus challenge helped me keep focus on my blood sugar values while I was incorporating SP best practices for diabetics into my life. At the start I was already tracking food and I was already mire active than the challenge guidelines. But having the challenge commitment helped me stay on track even when I broke my ankle in week 3. I only lost 2 pounds overall but I have reduced my meds significantly and had a .5 drop in my Ha1C test results. Thank you for all of true education!

It has been life changing. Tracking and smaller meals have really helped me. I am in control of what I eat. I can make it and I will stop by often just to check in and encourage others.

wow I learned so much! I read so much! I understand a little better about the diabetes. I have exercised every day since December 1, 2012, no excuses. I think this is the longest challenge I have done, and one of the best!

I haven't lost any weight--in fact, I gained six pounds-- but I lost two inches! I found it very difficult to stick with the exercise increases I had planned, because my damaged shoulder started to act up, so I had to slow down considerably from where I wanted to be. But that didn't stop me from doing more overall... and I'm pleased.
I'm also pleased that I'm done with the challenge! LOL
Now that the changes are in place, I plan on continuing to challenge MYSELF... without the actually challenge activities. I found it took up a lot more of my time than I expected, just marking stuff off here--I plan on using that extra time actually DOING...
Thanks for getting me back on track at least! LOL

I found the challenge very helpful, i'm down some but more importantly, i'm much more stable with my daily eating & exercise & my bs#'s are showing improvemen. I'm so tickled & grateful :)
it would be nice to see a longer term challenge along these lines... i'm not done, the lifelong battle continues...

I finished!!!! I had started this challenge before and only got as far as week 4 so I checked out and when I started this challenge this time I was determined to finish it. I did. With the tracking of food and all of the exercise I have doing during this challenge I got my blood sugars down low enough that I had to stop taking diabetic meds. They were making my blood sugars go too low.
My doctor has asked me to get another A1C done at the end of September. If that is still within acceptable range I can stay off my medications as long as I continue to exercise and track food. I am so proud of myself for working hard enough and long enough to get rid of those pills.
My next goal is to continue to exercise, eat healthy and get my weight down another 10 lbs at least and around Christmas time see if I can eliminate blood pressure pills and/or cholosterol pills. That is my dream and my goal for this year. Then the new year will be time to look at my goals again.
I really hope everyone had a great time doing this challenge.
After a few months have passed I will probably come back and do this challenge again.
