The challenge has been a great part of getting my blood sugars regulated. Since I've stuck like glue to my eating plan and added a significant amount of cardio/movement into my daily routine, my blood sugars have been awesome! In fact, I haven't had one high reading in at least 2 weeks! YAY!

Thank you so much for this challenge! It helped me remain accountable for the food I ate and getting the exercise I needed to maintain a healthy pregnancy. With 6 days to go, I did not have to go on insulin and my baby seems healthy at every visit. Thanks for providing the motivation and resources to accomplish my goal!

LORI - You have done a fantastic job on your journey!! You should be very proud of yourself. It's not easy to change your entire way of life around so you can be healthy AND to be able to get off all those medications. I've done it and I know how hard it really is.

I have faith that you WILL keep on keepin' on with the progress that you've already achieved. Now it's time to maintain those goals that you had set for yourself all those 9 weeks ago.

Be sure to try out some of the exercise challenges that the Weekly Challenge has here on SP also or any of the other different challenges that are offered. Keep that support group growing and moving!!

WOOHOO... I finished the challenge!! Well, it took me 9 weeks instead of 8 but who's counting. I did it!! My original goal was to get myself re-motivated back into exercising because I know for me that is one of the biggest things that helps me keep control over my blood sugar and I had kind of let that fall by the wayside, letting everything else be my excuse. It was tough in the beginning but now I am up and exercising every single day. If I don't walk on my treadmill, I walk outside. If I don't walk, I go to the Y and do a water aerobics class. Every other day, I'm doing strength training and now I'm working on making my core stronger.

I've lost 76 pounds total in my weight loss journey. I'm not sure where I was at 9 weeks ago with my weight but I am currently holding steady at 136 pounds. I have not taken oral medications or insulin since December and am off all of my blood pressure and triglyceride meds. I want things to stay this way. I've got to keep up with the exercising in order to make that happen so wish me luck!!

KARYNLYNN17 - You're certainly off to a good start, committing to your chosen goals.

Just three months ago I was only able to walk slowly for 10 minutes...and that was pushing myself. Finding the SP seated workout videos really helped me gain confidence in my strength and balance, which helped encourage me to walk daily, even if for only ten minutes.

Great diabetes control and strong commitment to do it again - kind of to get it right this time. I am doing a 4 week cooking challenge - want to get all the recipe paired down so my husband doesn't feel cheated. I also want to walk a 3 mile walk in September -it's a fund raiser for the agency that I work for. I can't even get a mile in everyday yet! emoticon emoticon

Today is the last day of this SP 8 week challenge. I have lost 23 pounds and brought my FBS down from high 280's - 320 to 120-140 and during the day I have brought my bs down to 110 average. My A1c will be checked next month. As I still have a way to go with both weight and FBS I will start the 8 week challenge again. I did not exercise as much as I had wanted to, so this time around I need to push myself more. Congratulations to everyone and good luck to those of us starting over again. :)

The last week of the challenge. I will not officially know until July blood tests, but I feel I have the tools to deal with this. I learned that over the last couple of years I kind of gave up and let the diabetes control me instead of me controlling it. By tracking everything and reviewing my blood sugar levels at all times of the day, I discovered that my peaks were at different times that before and finally this evening (which has been one the high times) my reading is 115!!! Just amazing/ emoticon

I lost 5 lbs with the challenge. Mid way thru I had my AIC and it had dropped from 9.3 to 6.1. I was taken off one of the meds and my bs have dropped even more during the second month. I am exercising more but it is still a chore rather than something I look forward to, so it is still a challenge to make it a priority.

Diagnosed with Type 2 in November of last year- I finished the challenge last week and had blood work done on Friday. A1C went from 6.7 to 5.5 with no drugs, just diet and light exercise (due to my bad knees). I am so happy!

I love it. I am more conscious of what I eat and when I eat. Portion portion portion!!!!! Last night had pizza. Not always a choice but would have eaten half of a pizza. A couple of toppings off the pieces and bread gone. More fat than I wanted but could eat what everyone else was eating. Yeah. All my clothes in Fl that I leave year to year are going to yard sale. Still on a lifetime journey but needed this boost.

It was great. I learned so much about diabetes. Also it helped me to get my exercise program started. I still need to be more consistent with my exercise. I'm doing 10 minutes a day walking and bicycling but I'm having trouble getting the strength exercises scheduled as they should be. The whole challenge has been an eye opener for me as to the importance of watching my diet and counting carbs emoticon

I replyed in the wrong place, oh well, I am good at that! I am not going to bore you with repeating myself...Just...super to all you who have gone this road. I hope that we all continue to live for health and stay on track. This was a great challenge...Thank You

On reading through other members reply's, I found, personally, not to focus on the "Big Prize", but on the little things that came about. My health care team said I am to only lose one pound a month due to other issues, so 7 pounds since I joined is cool. I can not run nor do any heavy exercises nor would I try to, but the seated video's and the stretches have made a huge change in how I feel. I do not look towards the end results, just focus on Now...what am I going to do today to help myself..that works for me.

Wishing you all the best.
Kat

Hi. I finished and completed this program a few weeks back but never received my award. I have to say this was a wonderful program to follow. I've never felt better in my life and I can see that my body is improving every day simply by what I learned within this program. I have developed lifestyle changes that are good and great for my life and I don't know how I ever got through one day in my life without having this new knowledge and information to follow.

Thank you for all I've learned and implemented into my life from this program.

It was an effort well worth it and I'll never regret having committed to it. Thank you for making it available to me.

I am almost finished with Week 8 but I am going on vacation tomorrow and I wanted to get my input in before then; lest I forget in the packing, etc.

I echo what others have said here. I realize that living with diabetes is all about management. It is a life time and long term goal. This just set the stage for the future. My FBS hovers around 100-103. I have even had it dip down in the mid 90s on days I am more active, which again is another "tool" to use in managing blood sugars. Month 1 was the best month for me but the second month was a bust. However, that was my own undoing: I struggled with having higher than average sodium half of the month based on food choices that I made as well as with the excessive heat and humidity here in GA (even with central a/c and fans running 24/7), I really struggled to work out as much as I had in June.

However, I have been at all of this a long time and I have no plans on quitting just because of one month's lack of progress. I am half way to my end goal weight and as the weather will cool off (fall will be here everyone!) I can pick up where I have stalled and get back on that proverbial horse again. I feel confident of that.

I have learned a lot about diabetes and I feel much more in the driver's seat with this as a result.

Good job everyone! emoticon

I have done the 8 weeks. Haven't lost as much as expected but have lost 12 lbs. My FBS have gone from over 144 down to 110 and are staying down consistently. I am now tracking my food as well as my exercise and plan to continue so. Overall I feel I have done well. emoticon I learned alot.

I only lost 1 pound. However exercise is now a habit. I sleep better, have more energy and my blood sugar is fairly stable. Not bad results and I will keep working on the eight loss.

I accomplished my goal about one week late and am ready for phase 2. Although I didn't have access to a scale when I started, I think it was safe to say I was pushing 160 lbs. I'm not at 137, 138 and holding nicely.

I've found my appetite has significantly decreased during this time and my energy level is good. I do forget to snack and need for focus more on that. Also need to start an exercise program.

I want to lose another 12 lbs. I'm not sure I can do it but am going to set the goal at least.

I finished the eight weeks yesterday with a negative outcome. I blame only myself for lack of total commitment.
I am finally feeling well again after another bout of stomach problems again brought on by myself.
So, tomorrow (Sunday 30 June) I am going to start again.
I know now what to expect of myself so I come into the program with a renewed high level of commitment.
To my friends Normagail2, NancyPat and LVIPOND-M you will be able to follow me daily as I will post regularly.

Today I am a bit discouraged. After 3 great days of exercise it all went to s**t. My stomach acted up again first with constipation and then with diarrhea.
I am going to wait until Sunday and, at that time, will start this and SparkCoach over again. I won't wait for then to exercise and eat well, I just won't be tracking during the balance oof this week.

well, here I am in the last week of the challenge. I did not come near my goals so I am going to start over next week.
I am doing well in the SparkCoach program and have found new motivation from it.
I will be more confident this time around.

The most significant lesson that I have learned is to be persistent, to get back on track after getting off track! I have been able to do this during these 8 weeks - hallelujah!!! In my previous attempts to eat right and exercise, I would continue for up to a week and then throw in the towel. This time I have taken on smaller changes, started with a reasonable plan, and followed through with the plan.

I have also learned to persist through moods - not to let my health habits to be influenced by moods. Often the seeing daily weights would set the tone for my day - I am learning to not be controlled by the scale, but rather to celebrate the healthy behaviors that I am acquiring.

Finally, I have seen 15 pounds lost and an FBS of 111! These changes have been exciting to see! I joined the BLC22 and plan to continue with that challenge. I may return to this challenge if I feel that I need reminders specific to managing my diabetes.

Thanks so much!
Gail

My final post is a little late because I was on a three week vacation and I did not have access to a computer, but I reached my goal of loosing one dress size before the challenge was over and did loose a little weight too. My biggest challenge was getting my Blood Sugars under emoticon emoticon control and I also achieved this. The secret is to follow yourplan... I chose to follow a 1000 to 1200 calories Diabetic diet. I had been very sedentary and off on my eating so I never missed a day posting my meals I can not loose on 1500, hopefully when I up my exercise more I can do this. I posted my fitness plan everyday and followed it all the time, except for a rest on Sundays but I often did the Tai Chi then too. I do not feel hungry and have felt great... Never, never give up, do not demean yourself if you eat off plan, we all stray at times, but get right back on Plan. Congratulations to all who have had success on the 8 week Challenge and those that may have not met goal but haven't given up. oops forgot to add that I tracked under my fitness goals rather than here

Better late than never - I finally finished this challenge. I started 12-31-2011. But even tho I'm slow, I did learn a lot and have gained several new and healthy habits that have become part of my daily routine.

I'm on a roll to go to the pool everyday, unless there is a T-storm or a H blowing through - those are not safe or healthy times to go to the outdoor pool and we don't have indoor pools here.

So I've got a streak going. Today was day 2 and I've done my pool thing today. Tomorrow I have plans to go with my friends and DH, so day three is already to go on the books, too. I know it's only 3 days, but that's a streak I've got going and I'm proud of it. Can you imagine how proud I will be when it's 100 days, or 200 days, or 500 days?

Have a great one!

Therapy Thursday for me is doing something to make me feel better. Right now, my housework is behind so I'm vacuuming the bedroom, which also means dusting, and other general cleanup. Got it halfway done, now I can go finish and really feel happy again.

Update - 05.14.13 Still doing the weighing/measuring/tracking of the food and it is helping me get to my ultimate goal of using the food tracker all the time. Anything that works is worth it, as far as I'm concerned.

Happy Mother's Day and here's a challenge to anyone that want's to take it on. I've accepted a challenge from a friend struggling, like I am, to weight/measure her food and track each meal as it comes, including the snacks. I'm going at for 1 week starting today, Sunday, 05.12.13 and going through Saturday, 05.18.13. If you want to join me, send let me know. I'd love some SparkFriends to join me in this little "after the challenge, challenge".

Wow, it's been a fast 8 weeks. I haven't lost any weight, but that's not a big surprise since I've been on a plateau for months now. I won't have my A1C redone for a couple of months yet, so I don't know where I stand with that. I can say that I find myself making better choices without thinking about it a lot or arguing with myself, which makes life less stressful. I have certainly increased the length and intensity of my daily workouts. I can feel that I'm stronger in everything I do. With summer on the doorstep, that's great. I'm hoping I don't forget what I've learned, because it is all good life lessons. I also relate a bit better to my body and what is going on with it. I feel more open-minded about making the necessary changes to keep myself healthy. Thank you!

Hi Everyone!

I am nearing the end of my 8 weeks. I am just about there, and about to start on a new 8 week adventure. I know I have been quiet for a while, but I have been doing the work. This challenge hasn't been without it's setbacks, but I think overall I've done very well.

According to my Docs scale, my weight is down 13 pounds. My A1C dropped from 9.7 - 8 since starting insulin. This is really good and encouraging. I have decided to use my doctor's visits (every 2-3 months) as my official weigh in and A1C numbers.

Hope everyone is doing well, and best of luck.

It's something we all need here and there, even winners need the encouragement and support. It just helps in little ways and sometimes, strange ways. I have always felt that when you get past one tough spot, turn around and help others struggling there, too. You can talk off again when there's a huge gap in the crowd crawling over the mess.

ROX TRY - keep going. Some of us take longer to learn things or struggle with things longer than others. That's okay cuz we learn them better.

I had a problem with fruits and veggies, too. To me a serving was the whole thing. Like an entire orange or apple. But a serving might only be half, which is a lot easier to do, for me anyway. I could cut the thing in half and not be overwhelmed with the entire thing staring at me, as I'm not real big on all fruits (Strawberries are a different thing entirely). Anyway, half for breakfast or snack in the am and the other half later in the day.

Veggies were what I learned as a kid - an entire plate of them. My mom loved veggies and grew them and when they were harvested, we had a plate load of whatever, except if we absolutely hated them and my mom didn't grow them, like asperigus. But we had to have one and my mom did not buy thin ones, they were all as huge as your thumb and cooked in a pressure cooker until we called the green slugs. They were disgusting and now that I know better, I understand they had absolutely no nutritional value at all. But eating a plate load of a veggie is not a serving either so once I learned a serving, it was a lot easier for me to eat them.

It's also easy for me to dream up any excuse not to go do the fitness things I have planned for myself, unless I go first thing in the am. It took me a while a few years ago to figure out my schedule and I would get out of bed at 6am, go for a mile walk, then come home and eat breakfast, make my lunch to go, plus snacks, and my husband's, too, then go shower, etc. I was at work at 8am. I worked my mile into a 20 minute length from a 30 minute length in the beginning.

So if you make your plans and work on them, you can get yourself where you know you have to be in order to accomplish your goals. Keep working on it. Giving up is not an option! I know you will do it!

For me, this HAS been a "challenge". emoticon
I still struggle with trying to make time to exercise as I should. It seems so much easier for me to make other things a priority. emoticon
As far as veggies... I REALLY upped them during these past 8 weeks. But, sometimes it is still difficult for me to get in 5 servings of veggies per day. If I include fruits and veggies, then no problem. Otherwise... hmmm... yeah... somewhat of a prob. some days. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
And though I have been relatively "good" overall, I did pretty much JUMP off the wagon yesterday. Actually, I was SOOOOOO bad that I'm not sure but what I gained back any weight I might have lost. (I'm weighing in on May 1st)... (And, YES!!!! I actually DID eat THAT MUCH!) emoticon
HOWEVER, I am glad for the things I have learned during this challenge and DO plan on continuing to try even harder to implement the things I have learned. I do believe if I continue doing this, I WILL be able to reach my goals. It may take a while, but as long as I'm heading in the right direction... it's all good! emoticon
Spark on everyone!!! I wish us ALL the best!!! emoticon

Today I finish the eight week challenge! I have lost 7 pounds which is a pound less than my original goal. More importantly fairly early in the challenge my BS's improved enough to get off insulin and have stayed within normal limits! I am doing more physically every day; I am wearing clothes I hadn't been able to wear since last summer, and I can see a real difference already in how I look and feel. I really havn't felt deprived with the nutrition plan and in fact have trouble eating 1200 calories/day.

Today is motivation Monday! Are you motivated to make today the start of a successful week? Are you motivated by having your meals planned and logged into the food tracker or are you standing in front of an open refrigerator wondering what to eat, like a little kid hoping the food fairy flies by and changes what you see? Push yourself into a planned lifestyle. Good lifestyles don't just happen, they are planned and worked on and they hum because you make them that way.

Make your attitude a successful one and you will be successful!

Hi All. Have just finished challenge and did not lose weight, not an ounce and I was a diligent food tracker and upped my exercise significantly. As frustrating as that is, here are the positives. I now jog up the stairs instead of huffing and puffing. When I walk to music its jazzy, upbeat songs to get my speed up. Every morning I test FBS and my numbers for the last 7 weeks have been very, very stable. AND HERE IS THE BEST ONE...TODAY A CO-WORKER SAID, R U LOSING WEIGHT? I have not heard that question for years. So maybe the challenge name is wrong. Maybe it is not a weight loss challenge as much as it is a regaining control challenge. Like others I learned so much over the past weeks, thanks SP.

I took the challenge and then upped it by adding more to the exercises every week, if only a few minutes, and then adding another day to the tracking until I reached a daily food tracking, not just 3 days a week. So I'm really happy with that, too.

I was told by the doctor that I didn't need to do the daily blood sugar testing so I had stopped, but just for "fun" I'm back to doing it once a day. Helps me adjust my eating habits and that's the name of the game at this point - just keep trying to make it better. Losing weight is one help, eating the right foods is another help, and doing exercise every day is the best help.

Have a great one!

I finally finished up. The weight loss is very slow for me. But I learned a lot reading the articles for each week. AND It got me going with strength training and testing my blood sugar. I really liked working through these weeks. Thanks for the support.
