I have finished this challenge. Since I've increased the level of intensity of my exercise my FBS levels are in the 95-99 range; there is a noticeable difference if I don't do any exercise (like on a rest day) or I do light exercise, then the FBS is between 100-110. I will need to get blood work done before my 6-month checkup with my primary doctor.

I found that I did know much of what was covered in this challenge, but I really enjoyed reinforcing what I know. I also learned a lot about busting a plateau, and that information coupled with what I learned in this challenge were a huge help to me.

I have accepted the fact that I need to always be vigilant in keeping track of my carbs and also to exercise 5-6 days out of 7. I also found that weight training really burns calories (that's why having a tracker giving me my heart rate is so important for me), and I learned that it's ok to "eat back" some of those calories, but I always keep control of the carbs when I do that. It would be really easy to eat candy or other sweets, but now I understand that just eating "calories" can do more damage than good if the carb content is out of balance with protein and fats.

Having diabetes is a continual challenge, but it doesn't have to be a struggle. Coming to terms with all the events that influence your blood sugar levels was a huge challenge. Some days my FBS levels were higher, not because of what I had eaten but because of other issues such as increased stress, lack of sleep or increased pain from fibromyalgia. Finding and keeping that balance takes constant attention, and some days were rough! At least I've been able to get back on track. I also found out that eating too much chocolate causes UTI pain. (Doesn't cause an infection, but it does cause pain!) I can still eat chocolate, but not every day and only in small amounts. I love chocolate, but it's literally not worth the pain it causes. That was a side effect of diabetes that surprised me!

Overall, I still maintain that being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes was a positive thing! I'm sure it saved my limbs and maybe even my life.

Finished challenge. My A1c is 5.8 and my blood sugar levels are staying within 92 - 125mg/dL.
I have not lost any weight but I am walking everyday. I have added some strength training but plan to add more. My eating is still not the best but it is getting better. I am setting up a plan that I will be able to follow this summer and I should start seeing some weight loss.

I have finished the Challenge! Blood sugars are in the normal range, my own A1c calculations say I'm at 68.9, which is too high for my md; we'll see what he says next week. I'm finding it most difficult to lose these final 30 pounds (which keep going up, then down), and I think I need a more rigid Challenge to help me stay accountable -- nothing too rigid, but a way to stay consistent with nutrition and exercise goals throughout the 8 weeks. I found this challenge to be less of a Challenge and more of an information vehicle. Plus SP calories are too high for my age, height, activity level. On the positive side, I've discovered the calorie/blood sugar association (not just carbs/blood sugar) -- SP recommends 1500 calories/ 150 carbs, and that = high blood sugars. Depressing, annoying, and difficult to find my own ranges -- 1000 to 1200 to lose 1/2 pound a week. Whew.

I lost 10 lbs. and 13.25 inches overall. My FBS went from 137 to 128 mg/dl.

It is a start and I plan to continue with this program and plan. I am using the Nutrition Tracker and following the SP Diabetes Meal Plan.

I'm walking every work day i.e. 5 days a week.

Sometimes i get on the bike and go for a spin or pick up the dumbbells and throw them around a bit - but nothing is intensive - all too easy - probably not so beneficial. Did go swimming once this past summer so far - swam a few laps with difficulty.

Tracking food and fitness more and more - but 5 days a week is enough evidently - so fine with me.

NOT restricting calories enough for weight loss. MUST get on that more and more.

Only insulin-resistant so far - not measuring glucose now. When i did measure it a few years ago, pretty much always normal. How can someone be more than 100 lbs overweight and have normal blood glucose measurements. DOES NOT COMPUTE.

Will have to study this challenge over and over to feel i got it down pat - i feel it whizzed by me while i was in a daze.

If you get off track, think of this as a learning experience, not a failure. We have all had many years of doing it our way and now we are re programming out minds to do it the right way. I learned new ideas and new exercises that I can do, even if I cannot follow the exercise program here, I now do some form of exercise daily. I, also, eat mostly veggies and fruits, my body handles that better.

Thanks for having this challenge here, it helped me. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I made important dietary changes this time around, and found more consistent blood glucose control. I have been avoiding some of the changes for a while, trying to find a compromise, but the benefits of change outweigh the costs. I'll be sticking to about a diet that is at least 75% vegetarian from this point forward. It simply works better for my body.

I also lost five pounds.

I really got back on track with fitness this time around, after slumping with that and regaining some weight.

I lost some weight, then gained a couple, but in a good way - lean muscle from much more intense strength training.

I had some victories and some struggles this time around.

The major victory was finding that exercising at night, especially strength training, is very closely linked to sub-100 fasting plasma glucose for me.

The major struggle was being inconsistent in my exercise.

Technically, I don't finish the challenge until tomorrow, but I am going to start again today, so that I can be fully in sync with the calendar week.

I learned a lot during this challenge, and see diabetes prevention as a process with which I will have to continuously learn and experiment.

But this is a good thing, because it means I get to do lots of different things with food and exercise, and I get to feel increasingly better physically and mentally.

I've had much better blood sugar control during this challenge, been much more consistent with nutrition and exercise, and I've lost 10 pounds!

I'm going for it again, and look forward to getting even better control of my blood sugar, getting fitter, losing more weight, and learning much more about this disease and how to prevent it.

I am finished and about to start again! This is a really great challenge and it help me a lot. I always gain weight in the Summer time. This is the first Summer that it didn't happen. I am very proud of that. I didn't lose much (I think about 4 or 5 lbs() but any loss for this period of time is an accomplishment for me and I am proud of myself. I really appreciated the weekly messages encouraging you with helpful information and things to try. I did eat better but didn't consistently track and plan to do that next go round.

I've learned a lot in these 8 weeks. I've learned there are things I still need to learn. I need to be more consistent with tracking my food. I think that will help a lot. Learning what i'm eating and when will help me to find better food choices and get rid of the bad ones. I've increase my exercise and I'm doing at least 4 a week. I think this challenge has truly helped me and I think I might do it again.

The challenge has been a great part of getting my blood sugars regulated. Since I've stuck like glue to my eating plan and added a significant amount of cardio/movement into my daily routine, my blood sugars have been awesome! In fact, I haven't had one high reading in at least 2 weeks! YAY!

Thank you so much for this challenge! It helped me remain accountable for the food I ate and getting the exercise I needed to maintain a healthy pregnancy. With 6 days to go, I did not have to go on insulin and my baby seems healthy at every visit. Thanks for providing the motivation and resources to accomplish my goal!

LORI - You have done a fantastic job on your journey!! You should be very proud of yourself. It's not easy to change your entire way of life around so you can be healthy AND to be able to get off all those medications. I've done it and I know how hard it really is.

I have faith that you WILL keep on keepin' on with the progress that you've already achieved. Now it's time to maintain those goals that you had set for yourself all those 9 weeks ago.

Be sure to try out some of the exercise challenges that the Weekly Challenge has here on SP also or any of the other different challenges that are offered. Keep that support group growing and moving!!

WOOHOO... I finished the challenge!! Well, it took me 9 weeks instead of 8 but who's counting. I did it!! My original goal was to get myself re-motivated back into exercising because I know for me that is one of the biggest things that helps me keep control over my blood sugar and I had kind of let that fall by the wayside, letting everything else be my excuse. It was tough in the beginning but now I am up and exercising every single day. If I don't walk on my treadmill, I walk outside. If I don't walk, I go to the Y and do a water aerobics class. Every other day, I'm doing strength training and now I'm working on making my core stronger.

I've lost 76 pounds total in my weight loss journey. I'm not sure where I was at 9 weeks ago with my weight but I am currently holding steady at 136 pounds. I have not taken oral medications or insulin since December and am off all of my blood pressure and triglyceride meds. I want things to stay this way. I've got to keep up with the exercising in order to make that happen so wish me luck!!

KARYNLYNN17 - You're certainly off to a good start, committing to your chosen goals.

Just three months ago I was only able to walk slowly for 10 minutes...and that was pushing myself. Finding the SP seated workout videos really helped me gain confidence in my strength and balance, which helped encourage me to walk daily, even if for only ten minutes.

Great diabetes control and strong commitment to do it again - kind of to get it right this time. I am doing a 4 week cooking challenge - want to get all the recipe paired down so my husband doesn't feel cheated. I also want to walk a 3 mile walk in September -it's a fund raiser for the agency that I work for. I can't even get a mile in everyday yet! emoticon emoticon

Today is the last day of this SP 8 week challenge. I have lost 23 pounds and brought my FBS down from high 280's - 320 to 120-140 and during the day I have brought my bs down to 110 average. My A1c will be checked next month. As I still have a way to go with both weight and FBS I will start the 8 week challenge again. I did not exercise as much as I had wanted to, so this time around I need to push myself more. Congratulations to everyone and good luck to those of us starting over again. :)

This is my second round with Sparkpeople to lose weight and my second time through the diabetes challenge. This time, I paid a lot more attention to my cardio needs. I've learned a lot more this time round about exercising and the types of exercise.

The last week of the challenge. I will not officially know until July blood tests, but I feel I have the tools to deal with this. I learned that over the last couple of years I kind of gave up and let the diabetes control me instead of me controlling it. By tracking everything and reviewing my blood sugar levels at all times of the day, I discovered that my peaks were at different times that before and finally this evening (which has been one the high times) my reading is 115!!! Just amazing/ emoticon

I lost 5 lbs with the challenge. Mid way thru I had my AIC and it had dropped from 9.3 to 6.1. I was taken off one of the meds and my bs have dropped even more during the second month. I am exercising more but it is still a chore rather than something I look forward to, so it is still a challenge to make it a priority.

I didn't do so well... I went up and down in weight, didn't get lower than 130's for fbs, and wasn't able to complete the exercises... I want to start over. frustrated.

I am very pleased! Have lost weight (a few more pounds to go though.) My A1C is perfectly normal and I only need to use the meter once a week to keep myself accountable! Hurray!
