I learned that life with diabetes will change constantly and that only by tracking and checking BS do we know what is happening. For almost a year I may have checked my BS every couple of months. When my A1c was 9.3 I came back to SparkPeople and learned that the patterns of my highs was totally different than a year ago. I already have so many of the illeffects - I didn't really think there was anything I could do about it. I also learned that attitude had turned me into a very lazy person. The pain level from neuropathy and osteoarthritis is so bad - I didn't move more than I had to. I also have learned that it is a true statement "the more you move, the less the pain".

Me too.

I have to ask about your photo, the house and surroundings remind me of where I grew up in northern California, a small town called Orland. Are you anywhere near there?

You're right, both types of exercise are important. I have joined the SP Spring Into Shape Bootcamp Challenge to motivate myself into doing both cardio and strength exercises daily.

I'm new to diabetes, and to thinking of eating and exercise as a health habit rather than a diet. I am learning a lot, especially about how much I need to learn. emoticon

I think we should keep taking it one day at a time, doing the best we can each day. But be sure to let me in on it if you find the secret to perfection.

You seem to have found a major clue as to what works for you. I just had another AHA moment myself. Started Curves and am losing inches but not weight. Just realized that circuit training without the cardio aspects of exercise is simply one half of the equation. Need to keep up with both aspects. Keep plugging away at making changes in lifestyle. Put it all together and you will really notice changes. It has been since 2008 for me. And still I slide occasionally.

I have read several articles about people having different calorie requirements, one on SP about a test you can take to determine it (I'm truly sorry that I can't remember the title to point you to it.) One article (not on SP) was about a doctor that would calc your requirement based on your sex, height and weight. When I put in my numbers it said I needed 3000+ calories a day to maintain my weight, and to subtract 500 calories from that to lose a pound a week. That seemed too high, and of course as I lose weight the number will decrease, but I had been losing weight eating a bit more before I found SP and their awesome tracker, so after two weeks I figured it couldn't hurt to try adding 200 more calories just to see what would happen. Within 3 days I lost 4 pounds, and have lost another 4 over the last week. I'm still keeping the carbs per meal within the 45 to 60 range recommended for Type 2 diabetics.

There have been two big surprises.
1. As well as all the diet and health benefits that drinking water brings, it also helps to lower blood glucose.
2. My weight loss stalled when I started SP and this challenge, even though I was tracking my nutrition and exercising. I only started losing weight again when I increased my daily calorie range from 1400-1600 to 1600-1800.
Whood-a-thunk?

The first 25 pounds (or so) that I lost before I joined Spark People came right off doing walk away the pounds five days a week.
I have added in weight training and my weight is not coming off as easy right now. I have lost 6 pounds so far in this challenge and I am in my seventh week here. I have lost 1inch in my waist so I am happy about that. I have 26 pounds left to lose so I try not to think about that!
I have found I can control my blood sugar IF I do everything I am supposed to do... if I don't do what I am supposed to do, UP it goes!!! I have found that I can lower it back down with lots of water and/or working out. emoticon Cheers to all, Christine

That it's ALOT easier to say "I want/need to eat MORE veggies" than it is to say "I want/need to eat LESS food." Changing everything so that it at least sounds positive, helps.

The problems that diabetes cause was a shocker to me. It was enough to make me want to stay with the nutrition plan. It gave me incentive to make this my life style. Also finding out just how much we overeat as Americans. I've found I'm not hungry eating 45 carbs per meal. It's working for me. emoticon

I'm doing this for the 2nd time, but I discovered this time around that what I eat has little effect on my sugar readings, other than through the direct association of weight gain/loss. My weight is what determines my readings. 44 lbs ago, my highs were first thing in the morning as well as 2 hrs post meals, and my lows were between 3 & 4 pm, and lights out; that pattern is the same, but the actual numbers are lower straight across the board. I keep my carbs lower in order to keep the proteins, fats, & veggies in range.

I've learned that I was living in a bubble of denial. For about a decade I've been telling myself I was "trying" to lose weight but looking back now after actually following the plan closely, I realize I was giving minimum effort. That's why I didn't lose before. I didn't follow plan closely, measure, track closely. I had the whole "one bite doesn't count" mentality.

Now, I'm tracking every bite (still a struggle for me) and keeping within the numbers most of the time.

But I've lost quite a bit of weight since my diagnosis of prediabetes back on 15 June. I think that's because I was so far off course before. That whole "beginner's luck" thing. For me it's ALL due to changing my nutrition tracker here, following it closely, and doing this challenge.

I'm on my 7th week, and feeling pretty good. about the results. When I first joined I didn't have much expectations but I had to try. I had been gradually gaining weight and my blood sugars were getting out of wack too. I lost 10 lbs right away but I've done that before ( water loss),then the weight loss became slower. What really surprised me is that my blood sugars are a lot better now. I seems the combination of diet changes and varied exercise seems to be the trick. I find its easy to go below the calorie/carb range but I get tiried and have no energy. I'm still working on the right balance of calorie, Carb and protein in my diet.{Its a work in progress}. I feel more energetic, my blood sugars are better controlled and I can do things that I used to do. Time will tell if I continue to loose weight but I am definitely happier. emoticon PS: I checked my blood sugar just before lunch it was 96 lowest it has been in 3 years

I am on the 7th week of the diet and I have lost only 1 pound. I find that the carbohydrate allowance is way way to high. If I eat more than 120 grams of carbs I gain weight regardless of calorie intake or amount of exercise. I have learned not to be overly focused on the weight goal. Otherwise, I'd be totally discouraged. I am not gaining weight, I have more energy and I am sleeping better (full 7 hours or more without waking). I feel healthier and stronger. I am definitely benefiting from the program.

All of your comments including your struggles help keep me motivated.

When I started the program I hated to exercise. It's still not my favorite thing, but it is part of my routine and if I miss one day I actually want to do something active the next day. That's a very positive change.

I have already decided to repeat the challenge after I complete it. emoticon

HG511, I feel your frustration. I am mended my nutrition tracker to reflect my diabetes. I get a generous 60carbs per meal, and 2 snacks at about 30 per snack. 240 total carbs would be way to much. I know from testing, my scores reflect better results when I amp down on those carbs. So I am always below their generosity. On the same hand, when I am low balling the carbs, I feel very listless and tired. Always seeking the elusive happy medium. Good luck!

I know I've learned a lot but now I am even more confused. In the last six wks. since I started here I have lost and gained the same amount of weight. I am confused by all the talk of low carb dieting and how many we should eat daily. I follow the SP Diabetic Diet but the calories are too much for me personally and when I reduce them I am unable to reduce the carbs, fat and protein so that it balances with eating less calories. Always with any dieting I have ever done if I eat too many carbs I have trouble losing. I do best if I keep my carbs between 60 and 100 grams a day. With the SP plan I am to eat 156 to 188 and its just too much. So if anyone can help me out here and share there thoughts please let me know.

Otherwise I am glad to be here with you all and am determined to not let the road blocks discourage me or cause me to quit! I am worth it and I will figure it out once and for all!!!!

It doesn't do any good to push myself too hard. I just end up hurting and hungry and wanting to give up. I'm going to try a gentler approach for a while. Can't hurt, since nothing much beyond getting stronger is happening so far anyhow.

I've learned when I look over my month summary report and my calories are more consistent my sugars are much more consistent too. Same with my exercise pattern. I have a Charcot foot and my legs ache but I am learning how to work around these challenges with positive responses.

What an inspiring woman you are.......4 miles a day is going some especially with arthritic feet.
I found that people, like you, and your stories on SP the most surprising thing of all. I now have little patience with myself and my excuses for not doing what I am supposed to be doing when I know there are folks pushing themselves to the maximum everyday against all the odds. I really owe my progress to people like you. For without you I would not have challenged myself to do what I thought I couldn't but when I tried I really could. Thank you.
Happy Easter to you as well.

I'm surprised about the calorie range. Spark set mine to 1200-1500. Considering my size, that seemed reasonable. However, after losing the first 4 lbs of water, I quit losing. So, at week three I cut the cals to 1400 max, and now I'm losing, roughly, .5 lb a wk - not the dramatic 2 lbs a week that were promised. My fitness has increased by 100% - from nothing to religious 45 min per wk of strength training, and 120 min of cardio; you'd think that, alone, would be more than -.5lbs a wk. My blood surgars have gone from extremes - 65-200s to a comfy 80-180. I think I need to cap the cals at 1300. 8-)

I have learned that being sick can play havoc with your blood sugar. I did strength training and worked out on the treadmill last night, and my FBS this morning was still high. Fighting sinus and ear infection and I am having to go out in the rain daily to go to work. It has rained so much here that they canceled school today.

The information on the net carbohydrate calculations was new to me. I count carbs during meals without decreasing for fiber. It has worked well for my program so I don't believe that I'll incorporate the fiber reduction but it was interesting to know this new method.

My career, I don't have a career. I am retired. Or should I say disabled. I have arthritis in my bones, especially the feet. The powers that be gave me my disability, and what is funny, because of the weather, I am walking 4 miles a day. I live with my sister, and take care of her house, and her animals. Sparks is all I actually have. There is no Mr. Joyce.

I walk 4 miles a day. After my 5K,. I realized that as long as I was feeling well, that it is something I could do. Count calories and watch what I fix to eat.

Glad to read your comments 4KWalk. I too have high BP and taking Diabetes meds. Metformin has helped my stick test numbers but not low enough to give them up. Hope to get there though. Hit a 90 this recent week for the first time in a month.

Hi,
Just finished week 7. I haven't lost that much weight during this challenge only 5 lbs or so but I must be doing something right because my blood sugars are doing great and on Thursday past my doctor said it was okay to try going without my diabetic medications because I was getting too many low blood sugars. When the blood sugars got too low I would have to eat something to bring it back up so I wasn't staying within my calorie range. My blood pressure is excellent but I have to stay on BP meds for now. It is my dream to get rid of all those pills except for the thyroid medication. I know I'll be on that for the rest of my life.

I have learned that I like being active. I can now ride my bike for 4km and this time last year I just drove it around the yard once in awhile. I like walking and do that at least 3 or 4 times per week.

Strength training has shown some amazing results for me. I no longer have floppy arms. It feels so good to wear a short sleeve shirt and not worry about flapping .... : )
My legs are more toned and all my pants are getting too big even the smaller size I just bought a month ago.

I feel more confident, more energetic and more alive than I have for such a long time.

This challenge was a good one and I have already signed up for another challenge - the 5k walk for late Oct.

Wishing everyone here only healthy and happy days ahead.

At the end of the day, be able to look back and say "I did my best today."

Preparation and planning are everything. This has helped me stay focused and I have been not been tempted when I go out. Going out to eat is a treat now. I look over the online menu of a restaurant, so I am armed when we go there. It puts me more in control to be prepared. I cook a lot more at home. Healthier and better food than what I used to eat. I experiment more with a lot of Spark Recipes, I have found several that are really delicious. I do not miss going out very much at all. This has really surprised me.

Eating right is difficult to maintain for life. It constantly needs to be selected, prepared, and eaten in right quantities. Being diabetic is a whole new ballgame in menu preparation. Never had to spend this much time and concern on what I have to eat to stay healthy, I enjoy the challenge, the extra meaning to live currently, but what a lot of energy and dedication. emoticon

Week 7 - Day 2

1. I am getting control of my life back. "You don't have to see the whole stair case, just take the first step" (author unknown)

2. I enjoy cooking, walking, reading spark related materials, music can be empowering. Yesterday I was doing a lot of different things on the computer with pictures, scrap booking, excel and journals - I noticed MY BRAIN IS WORKING A LOT BETTER! I seem to be able to process information and remember things more easily!! emoticon

3. I've never counted calories before, the tracking feature is awesome!! I feel like I'm in school and enjoying every bit of it.

4.****THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER AREAS BESIDES THE SCALE, to measure progress.

5. I'm more outgoing then I thought? lol I spark conversations up with a lot of different people through out the day.

6. I crave vegi's?? My taste buds seem like they got a dose of steroids, everything seems to taste incredible.

7. Friends and family like learning about healthy choices and food too? emoticon

8. Positive self talk has been key - Talking to my self as a I would a friend I care about deeply!!

9. Toning exercises suck and I don't know why? emoticon

10. Planning meals, menu's, snacks gives me a lot more time. And I can make better food choices easily.

11. Spark, Diabetic Educator, Doctors, blood sugars, food ARE ALL TOOLS!
Use them, drain them, push them to help you get the results or answers you need!

That you need to eat to lose weight. By controlling my portions I am able to lose!!! I would starve myself and skip meals, and gain weight. I was totally dumbfounded. That worked when I was younger...not now. At my age it is all about the exercise too. I have found a balance of food and exercise and it's working!!!!

Just taking medication isn't enough. I have to exercise, count carbs, and check glucose levels @ least 3 times daily. I have actually had low glucose levels when I needed a snack. that has never happen before.

I have learned that I alone am responsible for my health. That I have to take care of myself to care for others. That skipping meals is not a good diet plan. That planning, tracking, measuring are keys to success. I continue to loose slowly but, I feel that I could do this for a life time. I am also learning to love to exercise. I have learned that you don't need one hour increments to fit exercise in your life 5 minutes adds up. I have also found journaling helps me get at the most important part of any plan my brain. Attitude changes everything. Also I was shocked that drinking water helps me loose weight. That encouragment from others is of great value. One more thing, If I fail at one meal I can always start over.

That this is never going away but it can be controlled. I've known for 3 yrs I have diabetes but probably had it much longer per my doctor. But it's just now getting thru to me it's not going away, but I can control it if I try. It's up to me to do that. It's not going to happen by it's self. And on a lighter note I actually like fruits and vegetables. I avoided them for years. Going to the farmers market today! emoticon emoticon

I'm surprised to learn that so many different things affect my fasting blood sugar!! It is really crazy when you think about how fickle it can be.- - stress, types of food eaten, amounts of food eaten, amount of exercise, or lack thereof.

I have learned that I can lose weight by sticking to the diabetic diet and I can eat foods I like. I have learned that I all those vegetables I passed up in the store and frown at, they are really good! I learned that I have to exercise regularly to keep making progress. I've learned that I need to drink more than 8-8oz glasses of water a day in order to stay hydrated; and I've learned that reducing portion sizes is a must for me, I've been very unrealistic about how much food I eat.

This has been an interesting challenge - and it is a challenge! Surprised to see the fluctuations in my readings based on daily food choices and even exercise. Although I have been paying attention to calories in, calories out for some time now, this has challenged me to look at my daily breakdown of nutrients - sodium intake has been shocking considering I don't add salt to anything!!!

Hi its Gloria. What I have learned so far that surprised me is that I actually like to walk...running no but walking yes. Its a good time to mediate and just let everything go. I have learned with me if i stop walking for a couple of days in a row, its so hard to push myself out the door to start back up again. So I try not to go beyond two days of not walking.

I work out at Curves a minimum of three days a week. Usually Four. Yesterday I had completed my workout and stretches, I was walking around looking for a critter they hide to put my name in a drawing I was in the middle of the circuit ( on the floor) when this other woman and I broke out in doing the twist. It was awesome and great fun!

Way to go. That is exactly what happened to me. I used Prevacid for years and other meds. Slept with the bricks under the bed head. I had the endoscopies and mannometries. I was diagnosed diabetic and had High blood pressure. I too was shocked by the calories but also about the serving sizes. Now I use my tracker daily. I measure my food and have stayed away from processed food or white rice, pasta etc I never ate a lot of those I was originally diagnosed wheat sensitive so I never ate any bread at all for 12 years it helped but did not cure. I have been on spark, keeping track of calories and portions. I no longer have any Digestive issues, if I did I went back to check what I ate and I could see if I had tried a new food, that way I could avoid it and try it again later. It helps to know your triggers.
I no longer see a GI Dr, I no longer take diabetes medication or Blood pressure pills. I am 50 pound lighter and I have gone from size 22 to 14/16.
I have been doing this now for over 2 years with Spark and this is why I ask this question and I am always excited when it works for people. Thanks I am so happy you have learned a lot, keep up the good work and do remember to exercise. HUGS Pat in Maine.

I have been stunned to learn how many calories are in some of my favorite foods.I have refrained from those since learning how many calories and fat they packed. I found i didn't have to do this perfectly that I am continuously revising what works for me. I have had no symptoms regarding Irritable bowel,Gerd, and heartburn. I have more energy and stamina.

What an excellent memory! Yes, I have had a sleep study. I have a wonderful psychiatrist who ordered it, but like myself, was extremely disappointed. The report was basically based on something I inadvertently answered which could have been diagnostic, and there were absolutely no recommendations, as stated on the criteria. It happened to be another fizzle for me. However, I do know I have had difficulty with my circadian cycle since a baby. Is there such a thing as a built-in sleep disorder? I function as needed, but at times before the crash it does affect your life in many ways. I am glad it helped your husband. I appreciate your thinking of me emoticon emoticon

I mentioned sleep and you responded you did not sleep well as I recall.

Have you had a sleep study?.

My DH never snored but I would hear him stop breathing. When he had the study done he stopped breathing 165 times and that was depleting his oxygen level.
Now he uses a Bi Pap machine and we take it everywhere we go for overnight. He is doing a lot better now.
Just a thought, I hope you are doing better soon. (((HUGS ))) Pat in Maine.

I had some basic tasks to do. It is amazing how the slightest activity affects me. I am trying to work on plans so that I can accomplish things without wearing totally down.

I appreciate your words of wisdom. I never add salt, but a wee bit to selected items. (I suppose I am getting some of the ones which should be limited. So far, my blood pressure hasn't been affected as it runs normally low. I usually make my own meals, and have more control. At the moment I have had an extended illness and am staying with a friend. I eat more processed foods than usual because I have low bursts of energy. We have been careful, (or at least I have,to watch for the sodium level. It amazes me how much unnecessary salt is added!
Your are very insightful. I do have a sleeping disorder, and have interrupted sleep. I actually sleep better through mid-morning.
I have transformed into an avid exerciser, and it is difficult not to keep my pace. However, I have learned that over a longer period, I can work in some basic movement. I am on the seventh week of the diabetic challenge, and plan to finish if I can, be using simple aerobic
and the modified chair exercises. I find it interesting that in the challenge the same exercises are done for a full week- probably as they are full body, when I am always seeing not to exercise the same areas consecutively. I appreciate your response. Any thoughts or comments on simple activity or anything you feel pertinent always welcome. emoticon

HUNGRYWOMAN I am sorry you are getting too much sodium that leads to high blood pressure in many people. Some are more sensitive to others. You will have to read the sodium numbers on the nutrition labels. Any food you put in manually always be sure to ass this important mineral, we need it but not as much as people think. Do not cook with salt let others add it to their meals if they need it. There is a lot of sodium in restaurant food and in processed food. If you can prepare more of your own food that will really help.

If you have not exercised for a while you should take it slowly. Are you walking and doing any strength training. If you do too much you will feel weary. How about sleep are you getting enough sleep. Get back to me to see if I can be of any more help and answer to my comments. Do you have type 2 diabetes and High blood pressure. Pat in Maine Take care and remember small steps. emoticon emoticon

My biggest surprise is at how weak I have remained for so long. I may not be able to be as consistent as I would like.
My other surprise is as I track my food I am getting so much more sodium than I would like.
It is my goal to work on this, and time will resolve other issues.
Best to all!

MICHELE, that is what I like to hear. That is great. Once you realise you are able to be in control you will feel really good that you were able to do this.
Absolutely no-one else can do this for you. We can encourage and support but the final outcome is in your hands.
I love the feed back i get on this subject, I am sure once you have realised you are the healer now you will be better able to take really good care of your condition.
I am hopeful that someday others will be able to follow your example. I also hope you can share your story with others to help them realise it is up to them.
I started with Spark with A1c 8.8 now it is 5.9 I took metformin at first, not anymore and now I average under 100 most weeks sometimes months. No medications and I am so happy it is like that for me now, its a great feeling.
I used to take BP meds, not any more and down 50 pounds so far.
My triglycerides are my only medical problem and I am determined to get them under control.
THANK YOU for sharing your surprise. Well done,. Great job, PLEASE make sure you keep it that way. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Surprised that after 5 years of 7 shots of Insulin, I am now down to 2 shots of Insulin a day and back on an oral diabetic medicine. B/P is settling and steady, hope that medicine can soon
be eliminated also.Blood Sugars are averaging 120 with A1c around 6. Can not wait till
February to have Lab. work done again. This challenge has helped me refocus to get this all
back on track. Thanks a bunch.

Hello, I am 68 years young and love to use my resistance bands. my new thing suggested by another senior was a balance board. Its a riot, I tried it the minute DH inflated it and made a real fool of myself fell right off it. I persevered and I can balance 60 seconds now.

I too have been surprised with ST because I have lost no more weight in a year but I am down from size 20 to 16 and I feel great. I am off diabetic medications and I am off BP medications.
I exercise in the evening and my FBS is running at an average of 96 for the past week it is 85 today.
You are correct it gets to be quite addictive and I love it Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I've learned that I have to learn consistency. I have developed one really good habit and that is strength training. If I don't do my morning exercises I actually miss them. It is well worth getting up an half hour early each day.

I'm not good at resisting good food. This is a habit that I've developed over 60 years. I will continue to fight the food beast. 2 more weeks of the challenge but the rest of my life to practice what I've learned.

Stress is definitely a blood sugar raiser, just remember the antidote can be exercise, laughter and fresh air outdoors having fun.

Paying attention to tracking portions and sleep also helps a lot. Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon
