I am gradually adding more and more steps into my daily routine. I have added many of the Spark Videos into my exercise routine narrowing down the ones that I find helpful. I have a set of handweights by my couch. When I watch TV with my husband, I have been doing many different sets of lifts as well as floor exercises. It is all about gradually introducing the exercises back. When my husband walks on the treadmill, I ride the bike. We are starting to do more things together. Hopefully, I can find a pool with hours that work with my schedule. I really need to get back into swimming laps once again. (Hinting for an endless pool...but we have no place to put one.)

Just take it one day at a time.

I'm pre-diabetic, so I don't take medication or insulin, and there are therefore fewer moving parts to my equation.

However, I do eat before and after my primary exercise - hiking - which is where I tend to burn the most calories.

I usually have a snack before I go, and full meal after.

I'm try to get 30mins of cardio in 6 days a week and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I've been adding 15-20mins of strength training. I can't believe how great my FBS have been since I started walking On July 1st at the MD office my FBS was 162. This morning my FBS was 86. and it has been gradually getting better since I started walking and watching my diet.

This is my 2nd go round with losing weight with SP's help. I am pretty active, but SP has taught me so much more about balancing fitness. I have almost ignored the strength training side and the cardio has slipped so much since I've aged.

I really enjoyed team sports like soccer and basketball, but where to find something like that now that I'm in my 60's and laughably competitive?

Life needs balance

KARYNLYNN - Isn't it surprising how inactive we really are That Tracker is really a great tool to remind us of just that!! Getting up and moving 10 min every hour is a good way to keep that body moving - - I need to be conscious of that one myself!! Thanks for the reminder!

I increased my activity to a spurt just before bed and my fasting blood sugar has been lowered. I got my Spark Activity Tracker and my first full day was only 800 steps - truly showing how inactive I have become. Today I am working on the computer on an extended work project. I have made sure that I have been up and moving 10 minutes out of every hour.

I try to exercise 4 or f5 days a week, doing walking and weight training, some low intense cardio. This is week nine of exercising. Haven't lost many lbs but things fit differently so I guess that is progress.

I am doing pretty good getting excercise in. I only make myself do 10 minutes - and I often end up doing it longer. I have tried several videos, but have only repeated the seated core. I tried one that started on the floor, but you were supposed to lean back on your forearms - I can't remember ever being in that postition - well not for a very long time. Studing my blood sugars, I need to have some sort of excercise before bed - hoping that will lower my morning reading.

SWEETLILBLUEYES - Is the seat on your recumbent bike back far enough? The further back it is (comfortably) the less stress it will put on your knees. Also, have you tried any of the chair exercises? Periodically, I do use the chair exercises. If you haven't tried any of these, there is a team on SparkPeople called Chair Exercise Team and is for people with limited disabilities whether because of surgery, illness or whatever. There are also chair exercises on You Tube.

Some (most) days it's a challenge to make myself do my cardio, even though I always feel better after it. Weight training a bit, but after two sessions with arms/shoulders/back I was really sore this weekend. I think I over did just a touch. Feeling less sore today, so I'll give it another shot.
My knees are quite painful, and so it limits my walking, which I used to love especially outside. I have hopes that weight loss can relieve some of the knee pain so I can get back outside. Now my cardio is on a recumbent bike in the basement, probably why it's hard to make myself do it. I'd like to move the bike upstairs but my house is very small and I just don't have the space.

One day at a time.

I have been walking 2 miles a day then I do about 10 minutes strength training at the end of the walk. I use 5 pounds weights and do curls, reverse curls, wall push ups, and leg raises with a chair.

I am still trying to keep moving around more. Just moving is good for me. I work in a small shop and don't have a lot of room to walk so between customers I am doing laps around shop. Each lap is about 350 steps.

I've been eating a small snack before exercise. Here's why. 1. Afterward I usually don't feel like eating, just drinking water. 2. Before I was diagnosed I was trying to lose weight by doing classes like Insanity and a water aerobics lead by a drill instructor. Every time I would be so dizzy and nauseous by the end and I couldn't figure out why. Now I know I was dropping my blood sugar way too much. A small snack beforehand would have prevented that.

I'm so glad I joined the 8 week challenge, because it's so tough to keep eating healthy, exercising and tracking everything. The challenge keeps me going! I've noticed that this time around the weight is not dropping as fast as before. :( But I will keep on pushing and hope that eventually it falls off.

I also have osteoarthritis and have to adapt the exerise routines for myself. Thanks, everyone, for sharing how you are trying to work out this all important detail of keeping our individual blood glucose levels level. When I know that I might not be able to eat for some time for one reason or another then I try to have a PBJ sandwich along with a cup of skim milk as a snack or light meal. A friend suggested that I try protein drinks after working out but for someone who may crash because of low blood glucose, I have found that I need to mix that with some carbs so I get both quick energy but also slower for later. So, a couple of my post workout favorites are either a Glucerna snack bar or a frozen yogurt smoothie. I add some flavored whey protein isolate powder to the later and I cover both in a very satisfying and filling drink.

Balance is key and do-able as long as we remember about our body sugars and exercise. I find that if I exercise between breakfast and lunch it is a good time because I have took my insulin and ate, so therefore from having eaten my sugar will go up and the exercise actually is a good thing, but I will be more mindful and I think its all about the timing and planning of when you exercise. Great topic.

Working on the exercise balance. Try to walk 3-4days a week, doesn't always work. have been spending time in the yard this week, trimming and planting flowers. My goal for the coming week is to walk 2miles minimum Tues-Wed-Thurs, Videos workouts on Mon-Fri-Sat, combination cardio and strength training.

OK - I'm back with my plan for getting the exercise components balanced ~ here it is ~

Monday, Wednesday, Friday - yoga
Tuesday, Thursday - hour body sculpting class that incorporates weights
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday - cardio (combination of classes and treadmill/stepper/bike)

My exercise has not gotten to the balanced point yet, although I feel that I am working toward it! Since my husband had given me a month's membership at a yoga center, I have been focusing on trying out the various yoga classes to get the most for the money. Three weeks ago when I started, I had planned to go to one or two yoga classes a day - each class being between 60 to 90 minutes. Well that didn't work as the 90 minutes was all that I could tolerate. Also I found that everyday was too much and that every other day could work for me. So I planned to alternate walking at the gym with the yoga classes. I have made it to the gym only 3 days in the three weeks with walking and a dance class one of the days. I want to get a daily walk in, as I am planning to do my first 5K with my daughter in August/September. So what's my plan??? I need to give this some thought as the month's membership at the yoga center is coming to an end. I will think about this during the next few days and come up with a plan. I will also think about the strength training, although the yoga truly incorporates that. I will develop a plan!

3 days if cardio and 2 of strength training.. Plus some walking but not consistent with that!

Don't knock the walker on wheels. At times in our lives they can mean the difference between being cooped up in the house and being able to get out and about. When I needed it I loved my walker, and without it I don't know if I'd have made as much progress as I have.

It's taking me a long time to figure out how much of what exercises I can tolerate, and now I'm getting stronger so the plan I had worked out is too easy for me some days. Other days I don't have as much gusto. I think it's better to just work out a loose frame work instead of a strict schedule and decide each day how much you can tolerate.

I'm working on that this week. I got the food/water intake under control. I have a serving of cereal w milk at 9pm which allows me to sleep all night w/o waking up with the jitters. Thank you.

I'm sore...doing too much I was doing it 1-2 hours at a time. I know now 10-15 mins. per exercises 1 with rep? Working on finding the solution.

I find it easier to fit in 20-30m of strength training than to do cardio. Still looking for a good solution. It's funny because I like cardio better. hmmph

I stop eating carbs and sugar working out but my fbs is still not below 151,
I think I need more meds, I workout, mini stepper bike and elliptical, going to try an hour a day

I've been walking out-of-doors or doing walk aerobics inside along with a free weight routine for a while and it's beginning to feel like I'm in a rut, so I've started trying some new things, DVD's from the library so far . I found a Jazzercise one that incorporates cardio, strength training and stretch all in one workout and has 4 different half hour workouts on it. I'm really enjoying the change. I think I'm going to end up buying a copy for my "exercise library".
