Hi, Cris and Nancy ...thanks for the input on posting. I will check out the friend thing. Seems like I did that a few years ago and recently with someone else, but did not check on communications. One of these days, I will get the hang of it. Thanks for being patient with me. emoticon

Wow, Nancy! That's a lot of posts to catch up on. Not sure I could handle that. Actually I know I couldn't. After a while I get just plain antsy and have to shut the computer down for a while. Glad Alice wrote about trying to find us. I had been corresponding with several new members and all of a sudden they disappeared. Makes sense that they would have moved on. Me, I just jumped aboard after being on this team for quite a while, but was not active until I decided that I should be. Just picked this team and hopped on to the threads for new members. I've been a part of SP since 2009, but just recently set a goal to be more active in postings.

Alice - I was without email and simply couldn't find all of the threads I have posted on. I simply waited all week until the email was fixed and am playing catch up since I had a backlog of some 6-700 messages to respond to. Email is now fixed and so I am trying to catch up. My blog about my fitness assessment might give a hint about how hard I have been working. It has now been some 8+ weeks since I have needed insulin. I AM making great progress. It is nice to know I was missed.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

Alice, I checked the name of the threads from which I am getting posts.. Anything from week 1 of the 8 week diabetes weight loss challenge. So what I wrote in the last post is what I thought happened. The forum name is Week 1 discussion, topic names vary depending on new members starting a thread.

Hi, Alice! Finally figured out why I am not seeing many of those I was corresponding with. A few months back I made made a goal to write at least 5 posts a day to new members. That happened when I was reading a post on one of the message boards for this particular team. Decided that diabetes was something I live with, and felt that maybe I could support myself and newer members in sharing info, etc. so I clicked on the box that would pass along posts from the diabetes challenge team. And now, every time there is a reply or a new thread for new members (week 1) that gets started for this team I get a notice. Every day I get postings, some from those I have been talking to and many who have just started. When you post to other threads I see them only if I have been part of that particular one. You have moved on in this challenge and are posting on new threads. If I miss opening posts from a thread I have been following, I do not get any more posts from that thread unless I do. Which sometimes happens. At least I think this is what has happened. We can do a couple of things to keep in touch, the easiest is to befriend each other.

How are you doing now? Regards, Cris

Hi, Nancy and Wegen - I have been missing you two...Congrats on your progresses! Today is Day 1 of Week 5 for me. I have been hit and miss on tracking the last two weeks. Very stressful couple of weeks and I am a stress eater. My official weigh in day is Monday, and we will see what kind of damage I have done. FBS this morning was 128, which is better for me and my BP was 127/75.

I have been trying to post moving along with what week I am in. I do notice that not everyone seems to move along...am I not using this forum correctly? I like camaraderie and was wondering if I should be posting in just one spot or not. I wish I had time to post in several, but until I retire (which is a couple of years away) I just don't have the time right now.

See ya later!
Smiles,
Alice

That is awesome - I know those are BIG deals - I get checked regularly for the diabetic retinopathy and so far - like you, none. BP has been a bit problematic but seems to be improving significantly.

Another plus was going to have my eyes checked and being told there is absolutely no diabetic damage to the eyes. AND blood pressure is now 119/61. Yay!

I am so glad you had a good time. I am a FIRM believer in the idea of BETTER THAN IT USED TO BE. Practice does make it easier. You can find out MY real feelings about this if you read my blog from yesterday - The WOMAN IN THE POOL. Check it out. It might give you some ideas.

Decided that staying at a hotel where there is a pool is a treat for our grandson, who loves the water. Being in a bathing suit is still not a comfortable experience but definitely not horrible as I thought it could be. Practice will make that better, right? And the eating part this weekend was better than in the past.. Over ranges sometimes but a huge improvement overall.

Have a wonderful trip! Enjoy the swimming!

FBS this morning was 131 and pre-dinner was 115. Heading in the right direction!

Off to see what the three weekers are up to!

With those "big aprons" a lot of the women choose two piece suits that have shorts and a separate top that is longer and covers a multitude of "problem areas"

Sounds like a great dilemma to me too... have a wonderful time with the grands ...I looked in the catalog at some bathing suits yesterday... I have such a huge apron I don't know if any one of them would work. I guess I won't know until I order one and find out, eh?

Have a wonderful day, Ladies

Forgot to add that I tried on the suit before packing it. I bought it at Christmas thinking to use it over the holidays, which did not happen. Welllll, this may be the only time I will be able to wear it simply due to it now being too big! Glad it is a 2 piece--can take in side seams hopefully. Such a dilemma, right?

Your grandkids will not care what you look like and you will be at a hotel where everyone is strangers - that is a great place to start being courageous. Go for it. Everyone needs to do what they are comfortable with and I don't think it is right for EVERYONE, but to take away both the pleasure (if you love the water) and the exercise (especially if you cannot or find it painful to do other activities) seems so sad to me. It really deprives you of the right be healthy and happy - the worst type of discrimination - DISCRIMINATION BY YOURSELF.

I can relate to what you both are saying. I do not have access to a pool, but certainly could do better about hitting the local beaches, but don't. Think a lot of it is wrapped up in how I see my body, I have never been comfortable in a bathing suit. Trying to change that by buying a 2 piece tankini suit but have yet to put it on. Now that I see your posts, am packing it for this weekend's trip to Indiana for a visit with the grand kids. We are staying at a hotel and think that Brayden might like playing with grandma and grandpa in the pool. But am thinking also that I need to try it on again. Am down some pounds since it was purchased. Hmmmm, the possibilities......

Nancy... sounds like I need to work some more on my pride issues... one of my dreams is to have a pool of my own...You would think that someone that has pride issues like me, would not have gotten so way out of control with their weight ...go figure! (Pun intended) emoticon Have a great day!

There are women I meet at the pool who wear shorts and tops - some weigh as much as 500 pounds. Nobody cares what we look like, they are just thrilled that we are working on our health. There are people in their 90s who regularly do the pool classes and both men and women who weigh a LOT more that even I do who regularly do them. My vanity had to take a back seat to my health - I cannot even image exercising in this heat anywhere BUT the pool. But, to each her/his own. Not everything is for everybody. My health is more important than my vanity.

WEGEN - I was wondering as to whether I was posting in the right spot or not, too. Today was pretty much off track menu wise...exercise was good though at work.

Nancy - a pool sounds lovely, however, I haven't owned a bathing suit in years...have no idea how much of this body would stay in one..and my vanity would only allow me to swim under the cover of darkness.

Kandae - I am pleased you are doing so well. I too have no A/C at the moment - we are waiting for a part to fix it and sweltering. My solution for exercise is the WONDERFUL pool. It is perfect for me.

I wondered where you went! And it just dawned on me that this is probably why I am not seeing more postings from folks who were here a couple of weeks ago. I jumped onto threads for new members and made assumptions that this was where they would stay. That clears up my confusion. How are you doing?

Congrats WEGEN and Nancy on your losses... I moved to week two and have been posting there and missing you two. My FBS -126 this morning...the lowest yet.

Right now, no A/C and am sweltering ...drinking plenty of water but no exercising ...just can't in this heat.

We usually only need A/C for a week or two here in NW PA, this is one of those weeks. We decided not to invest in one when we moved ...perhaps not a gooeed idea... I am such a woos!

Keep on sparking, my friends!

It has been two full weeks not needing any insulin - I do NOT take any oral meds either for the diabetes and have been on insulin for more than 5 years. I am REALLY serious this summer about getting off it for good.

Nancy, I started out in Jan. doing the 13 in 13 challenge and I think I lost around 22 lbs. It was great, as it took off the pressure and yet got me motivated to get a momentum started.
Have fun!

FBS = 155, PreDinner = 127. My numbers started out in the high 280's while in the hospital and had to get them down under 200 before I was released. They have slowly come down since then with increasing my meds in increments from 10mgs to 30mgs daily. I will most likely have my A1C done again in August.

You are very welcome. Getting the blood sugar levels below 100 is such a wonderful thought, isn't it? Hoping for you that they come down steadily and smoothly without those huge drops that can cause problems. At first, my levels were into the mid 300s and drops into the mid 100s actually created symptoms of low blood sugar. Not that the reading was so low, but some of the drops were pretty large. Once it happened while on a walk along a Florida beach and it scared my friend, who ran back to the condo for a candy bar. Stupid me--did not carry anything in my pocket, nor had water. After several months, those symptoms then occurred in the 90s, now they start in the 80s/70s range. When this happens I get some symptoms (prickling scalp, sweats). It's easily managed with a snack, hard candy, etc. I just gotta be smart about it.

Have a great evening.

FBS = 149 this morning. Freggies...great word, I like it. emoticon

I had a robotic hysterectomy in January which whacked out my sugar numbers. I had to stay a couple of extra days in the hospital to get them straightened out. And since then, we have been trying to manage with increasing my dosages of oral meds. I started reading and figuring out menu plans, and have gotten my numbers down considerably, but need to get them under 100. I do not want to have to do insulin injections.

This has been a great informational site and I am enjoying all the resources available to help keep me stay focused and accountable.

You ladies, NancyPat and WEGEN...have been so helpful. I appreciate both of you so much.

Thanks!

It is an ongoing process. I have worked hard - part of the time, I was on oral meds, then oral meds and insulin, then weaned off and was on nothing, then oral meds, then oral meds and insulin, then just insulin (having negative side effects from the oral meds - affecting my kidneys), and for about 10 days, NOTHING. It depends on weight, eating and exercise, and overall health. Constant (but worthwhile) effort to monitor my readings and regulate my eating as well.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

Freggies--blended word for fruit and veggies. Took me about 3 years of being fairly serious about making changes and using SP resources regularly. Now I have to monitor for low readings. Those between meal snacks are important. Just gotta plan for them.

Blood sugar level this morning: 90. Premeal tracking worked pretty well for overall ranges. It is still going to be a daily struggle to keep the fat content within ranges. Definitely means eating more freggies! Love that word--new to my vocabulary, so am practicing. Love the way that word rolls off my tongue. Grins......

PS--buying a new scale tomorrow. Old Reliable died last week, so now I am getting anxious about seeing my weight one week later.

FBS = 171 this morning. This is heading in the right direction for me. I will be joining you in the preplan menu planning...I did manage to lose weight this week...YAY. However, today's nutrition report showed some areas for necessary planning. Thanks for the suggestion!

Okay, tomorrow starts my planned tracking. To log in what I plan to eat before I eat, so I can tweak when necessary. By posting it here, I gotta do it! Night, all!

This is all about support and we love sharing the information we are learning. It helps us ALL when it helps one of us. Tweaking is a constant process for me. What works today may not work tomorrow. I do prefer tracking my PLANNED foods and then tweaking BEFORE I eat them - so I can see that maybe I need to skip that potato today because my carbs are high, or add that potato because my potassium is low. It also allows me to KNOW about how many calories/carbs/proteins I have to work with for dinner when I get a surprise invite to go out with friends so I am ditching the PLANNED FOODS for dinner tonight. Keep asking, you will learn a lot that way and you will soon be sharing YOUR discoveries with others too.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

The piece that never tires me out is the fact that questions make me think/rethink what I am doing and why. Like your question about keeping within ranges actually made me critically look at my own habit and decide I need to take my own advice. Tweak!

Thanks WEGen and Nancy...I am in the habit of eating a banana every morning, but need to incorporate more into the rest of my meals...I will buy some raisins and get more potatoes into my meal planning. I am logging my food intake, but only after I have eaten it...perhaps the pre-plan is the way to go...eventually all of this learning, planning, and tweaking will not feel so much like another full time job... emoticon
Thanks so much for all of your help and tips...I hope I don't wear you out!

Bananas seem to be my go-to potassium source. As for staying within ranges, it is difficult to be within ranges for all the main areas at the same time. Which is why it sounds like a great idea to pre plan daily menus and get them logged in. This way you would have time to tweak. Keep meaning to try doing this, but have not done so. I can be soooooo unsmart about some things. Sigh.....

Bananas, raisins, milk, yogurt, oranges, and potatoes are big potassium foods. You don't have to overdo it, but can fit them in. There are other foods but these are the ones that stand out in my mind. Any of these can help boost your potassium intake and also fit easily into a healthy meal plan.

Thanks, Nancy...great tip! My potassium is way low...any hints on how to get it up without overboarding on the calories? I also take a med for it...I really want to get off all these meds.

While it is not recommended to make a habit of going below on any one nutrient, occasional ups or downs are normal and especially at the start a good idea is to average your readings over time (a week maybe) and try to end up with an AVERAGE that matches your goals. So today, you might only get 25 carbs, but tomorrow, 40 and the next day 50, etc. - not PERFECT but averaged out, that is not a bad average since it averages out in your range.

At the beginning you are still learning and balancing your old habits with new ones - give yourself time to "get" it and soon you will be within your range most of the time - there may always be days when you go over or under and occasional ones are not a big deal - it is a problem when it is an everyday happening.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

I have chosen the program for diabetics, also... counting those carbs. emoticon

Question: Can we eat less than the recommended carbs? Sometimes, I have a hard time getting 30 to 45 carbs/meal in?

From your posting, you are making progress. FBS. Fasting blood sugar. There are a lot of articles about diabetes on this site which have been really helpful. On the food tracker I chose to follow the program for diabetics. It breaks down my program into 3 meals and 2 snacks. The snacks are something I struggle with personally, and as one result of not consistently eating them, I recently experienced blood sugar lows that stopped me in my tracks for a while. Quickly learned that low blood sugars are actually more dangerous for me because there is not much warning.

FBS - stands for fasting blood sugar - that IS your pre-breakfast reading - blood sugar without having eaten anything yet.

It is great that you are really working on this. Keep it up you are definitely moving in the right direction.

This is my first time posting here...my Pre Breakfast reading was 140, which is the lowest it has been since monitoring (began monitoring in Jan. - was reading well into the 200's then).

What does FBS stand for?

My A1C in June was 7.1 down from 9.2 in January. So, I guess I am heading in the right direction.

I have been instructed by my doc to take my readings in the morning every other day now, and every other day take a pre dinner reading...so I am only sticking myself once a day.

I am willing to do whatever it takes to get healthy and want to get this diabetes under control.
