Hi Nancy,
I am glad you checked in today. I have been feeling very stressed out at work these last few days and it looks like that might last until the end of the year. But I told myself that I wouldn't let it derail me like it has the last few days, so today I tracked my food and exercised and that was the good part of my day. It feels good to be back on track and not have given up when I was struggling. I really appreciate your support. It helps to know you will be checking in. I got your question about e-mailing. I wouldn't mind that since we can't seem to figure out that friend thing yet. My e-mail is Jeanneschwabacher@gmail .com I am glad each day is better for you as you get over that flu. That was good that you could turn the day around when life was so rushed. It really takes me a long time to get the food planned for the week and then my chances are better I will eat the right amounts. I am struggling with the water though. I am a grade school teacher and can't use the bathroom except during my two breaks and if I drink water that is harder to manage. Then when I get home, it feels like too much water to drink! I am trying to get in at least five a day and that seems the best I can manage. Do you listen to the spark people radio? I tried it today when I came home from work and it kept me from eating before dinner. They had a few good things to say. Checking in with the web site does seem to be helping me when I feel like eating. Well, lets make tomorrow a good healthy day. I plan to swim early in the morning before work. That is always a good way to start my day. Enjoy. Jeanne

How was your day Jeanne?

I didn't check glucose today and while I ate something before I ran out the door which wasn't a wise choice, at least I ate something which is one of my worst habits-skipping breakfast. Lunch was not exactly wise either, but was determined to make supper on track and did with talapia, salad and oven baked potatoes, milk.

Still trying to recover from the flu, each day just a wee bit better but looking forward to recovery soon and regaining my energy again.

How is your tracking going?

Hi, it felt good to get your note. I had a very stressful day. I am impressed that you are ready to get back into control so quickly. I have been struggling. I have exercised, but my eating is not in control. Company over on Sunday, unexpected meetings on Monday so wasn't home to eat what I had planned. Now, a parent at my school says she is going to sue me for not meeting the needs of her special ed. child. I am very stressed out about it because no matter what I do, it is never good enough and he is very out of control and disruptive. But, I don't want "my crazy life" to stop me from reaching my goals. I so often do let it. I really need to remind myself, just take one day at a time and stay present instead of worrying so much. We can only do what we can do at this moment in time and keep moving one step forward into the next moment in time. Maybe it is the same for this life change we are trying to make. We just have to make one good decision in this moment and take each moment like that. I am sorry that you have been hit so hard with that virus or flu. I can imagine that zaps your energy and mood. Hopefully, you will be well soon and your efforts will feel easier. Keep it up and have a good day tomorrow. I do not know how to do the friend thing either. We'll catch on eventually! jeanne

really blew it today...went over with calories and ate about 8 cookies when my husband brought them home from store. I don't even like store bought cookies but when you don't have any goodies in the house anymore i was out of control. fell off the wagon but gaining back control again. will do extra exercise on bike today to try to compensate.

I haven't figured out how to add you to my friends list. do you know how to do that?

how was your day?

Jeanne, how was your day today? Still cold there too?

I finally made appt. with lab for my 6 mo. blood work. I have been putting it off, knowing that I haven't "behaved" well for the past year with exer. and diet. I have a new doctor as well as mine retired so results will be discussed with someone I haven't met yet. Don't know why this is intimidating me so much-they only want the best for us, right?

Had a decent food day and glucose readings have been good. Just wish I could shake the rest of this virus which is hanging on. Need to talk to the doctor about sleep apnea also as my snoring has gone from annoying to causing trouble with throat, breathing and finally my husband has taken to sleeping in another room so he can sleep. He says when I nap in the family room in front of the tv he can hear me on the next floor still...can't be good, right? I am sure if I could lose most of the 100 lb. I carry, most or all of the snoring would disappear but in the meantime, perhaps some breathing help would get me a good night's sleep and get rid of permanent brain fog?

Did you get your dr. results yet? How is tracking going?

Got on the scale this morning and down another.5 lb so even though not feeling well yet, and not tracking and exer. is minimal, able to maintain which is encouraging. Did track my morning glucose this week and kept it in good range each time. Next step is to track it midday for a week. Glad you are sticking with the plan and with me on this journey. Tracking is hard but even though we hate doing it, it is supposed to be one of the best things. My depression is slipping again for some reason. My counsellor shared something that might help us both.Every time I have the urge to eat carbs, try to find out what I am really feeling, tell myself that an apple would be a healthy choice and so would a walk, then do that, all the while telling myself how I can make good choices. The change in self talk apparently helps the brain chemicals and reinforces the good behaviour so it becomes easier with practice to pat yourself on the back and make the good choices. I am going to try it this week. Keep going Jeanne--we can do this! Nancy

Hello, how are you today. The temperatures are falling. High below 0 tomorrow, so I went out to walk today, as tomorrow will be too cold. Have you started tracking yet. I have had two not so good days calorie wise. Ate too much. I need to get back to it tomorrow. I feel good that I still tracked those days when I knew I didn't do well instead of just skipping it. I did get a call from the doctor, but I wasn't home, so I will have to try and catch her next week. Is your flu all the way gone now. I hope so. It really hit you hard. Well, I hope things are well.

Hi! It is late, but I wanted to check in. I am glad you are going to go on your bike. Doing something is the key to moving forward even if it is just a small step. Things here are going well. I am excited to not have quit and it is week three. A first for me! I am at the high end of calories or a little over, but I am close and I am trying to let myself go with that. I have been doing my exercise. It is exercise that keeps my glucose numbers low and they have been in the normal range all week. Still haven't heard from the doctor and my work hours don't make it easy to call during the day when she is there. I am hoping she will e-mail or send a letter. Each day is a challenge, but it is nice to have someone to share it with. Good luck with tracking your food when you start. I find it pretty easy to do and I don't usually eat what they have on the daily food plan. Doing it is helping me learn about portion control. Have a good tomorrow!

Hi Nancy,
In Minnesota there is lots of people getting the flu. More than 600 have been hospitalized and over 25 have died. Some of those people had the shot like you have. The scientist can't figure out why the shot is not working as well as they thought. Anyway, I am glad you are on the mend. I haven't heard from the doctor. She said a week and that will be Tuesday. I still try to do what I can and am feeling better. I weigh in on Sundays and I lost three pounds this week so I was happy with my results. Tracking what I eat seems to be helping me. I do it usually after I eat, but I think I am going to try to do it right before I eat after I have put the food on my plate. Maybe if I see the calorie count, it will tell me that that is enough. Some days I go over my goal and I would like to get to the point where I can get there most days. Take it easy and rest and drink lots of water. Jean

you mentioned you were struggling-keep going this is so worth it!!!!

i am still not feeling well nor is my husband, this virus once it catches you holds on and nearly everywhere you go, someone seems to have even though i got my flu shot...

was able to maintain my progress but am concerned that once i start feeling better and start wanting to eat again, that it will come back. during this time, i haven't been able to swim which is my only exercize so hopefully with one more week can return to that again 2 times per week-i take my mom (80 yrs old) and she needs it so much too and i feel like i am letting her down.

did you get you test results from the knee? hope they find a solution to resolve the pain so you can do what you want to again

weigh in for me is Monday so i'll try to let you know tomorrow what happens and my next little goal.

still haven't felt like doing much but hope to really get into this website this week and get familiar with resources and how things work

sorry to not check often, still recuperating from the nasty flu virus circulating here...exhausted and coughing and nothing tastes good and hardly feel like eating. how is the knee? hard to do exercizing when a joint hurts but I understand that resistance exercizes/weights are also important to build muscle that keeps calories burning so I highly recommend that as I had a leg injury last winter that slowed me down most of this past year. how are you doing with the water part. I am struggling with that and will focus on that this week to get back up to 8/day, consistently. Weigh in is Monday so I'll let you know how its going then.

Hi, How have you been? I hope you are feeling better and able to eat and find the energy to move. I have been struggling to stay on track this week. Mostly because I have been feeling hungry throughout the day. It is just two days to my two week mark and I am trying to make this be different and not give up. I have tried to exercise a little even with some pain in my knee. It would help if it would heal up. How have you been doing?

Hi Nancy, hoping that you have started to be on the mend. It is those winter colds that are the worst. Well, I have been trying hard to follow the plan. I am usually on the high end of my calorie count and some days a little over. I think that is OK as my body gets used to eating less. Exercising most days even with my bum knee, but I don't know how smart that is. Without exercise losing is very difficult for me. I did have my MRI, but I don't hear from the doctor until next week. Hey, it is fun to have a friend from Canada. I live in Minn. so we are practically neighbors! Hope your day was a good one and that health is coming your way. Jeanne

Hi. Thanks for the tip about the pantry foods. How is it going today? I did go to the doctor and I have an MRI tomorrow for my knee. The doctor couldn' t really tell what was wrong with it. I swam today, but it really hurt by the time I was done. Hope you are feeling better these days and have been doing well. I am thinking to make this easier to contact each other, we have to friend each other, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. I'll check the spark pages and tell you if I figure it out.

83 Cheap, Healthy Foods for Meals in Minutes
Try to do a search on the site for the title above and see if it takes you to what I was looking at earlier. I looked at so many things today I can't remember them all.

Feeling worse today and my glucose was actually quite low for me. I live in Canada so our numbers are different than yours. Our fasting number is less than 5.5 and 2 hours after eating is less than 7.9 for ideal numbers. I was very bad last year and didn't take my readings or anything else seriously so this is really ground zero again for me. I should know better and do better...

Too sick to swim this week or do much of anything so will focus mostly on fluids, resting, getting better and making better food choices although I really don't feel like eating anything.

Going to use the salt free broth in my cupboard later to brew with some onions, garlic, carrots for supper. At least that should soothe my sore throat and coughing I hope.

Stick with this. I know that this time we can do it! Added incentive for me is last night my oldest daughter came home with a diamond ring so if I don't want to be the fat lady in the picture again, I better get serious not only about better health, but exercize.

I'll check in here again tomorrow. Have a wonderful healthy day--walk around the block maybe? do a few extra stairs? pick your favourite

Hi, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the site too, but in time I hope to get it. I am not such a computer techie, but my husband or boys are good at it so I know I can get it all figured out in time. I am replying this way too because that is all I know how to do too. Well, I am glad we found each other anyway. Hope that virus doesn't hang on too long. Every day seems hard, but I am just trying to keep my goal in mind and that is to feel better. My diabetic numbers went from 166 to 114 just this week. I want to keep them under 100 like I was able to do a few years ago when I exercised consistently. Loosing weight will help too, I know. It feels nice to share this journey with someone and to know someone cares. I'll have to look for that pantry list. That sounds like a very good idea. Good luck today.

I am ready to start week 2 on Monday. Going to be a tough week as I have caught the virus going around and have been at home for several days already and no grocery shopping so hard to make the better choices yet. Just copied the pantry list and 88 meals from the site so once I am better, will stock the pantry with better things.

How are things going with you? Hope you are well. I am still replying to your one week link as I don't know how to find things well on this website-overwhelmed with all the choices and places to go to. Hopefully, I'll get better at site with time.

Keep going on this journey. It will be so worth it!

enjoy your night out for dinner with your son. Good plan to start with the doggie bag before you eat-love that idea.

I am starting a "nono" cupboard to store things I really shouldn't eat but would be fine to offer visitors or for very limited servings when I feel I can control the portions for a treat. out of sight, out of mind works best for me.

I love to bake but this year, I am going to severly restrict my baking for only when I am having company or when I can gift it 90% to someone else so I don't eat the whole thing.

Sorry that you are not feeling well. It is hard to stay energetic when a cold comes on. I almost slept in today instead of swimming. Up late and morning came too soon. But I had made a plan and I know I so easily give up, so I made myself go swim for 30 minutes. I am always glad I went afterwards and I have to keep reminding myself of that. I have been feeling very hungry today. I am not used to that hunger feeling and it always is hard for me. I know that people who do not struggle with weight feel hungry every day as it is a normal thing to feel. I hope I can get used to that. I know what you mean about having other people bring food around which makes this harder. I think you did well even though you caved, because you stayed aware of what you were doing. A friend said to me last night that we can do anything as long as we stay focused on that goal each day as we live our life. I think that is true and I think that you were doing that. We can't be perfect, and it takes time to change our bad habits. As long as we pick ourselves up again as soon as we can and begin again, it will keep us moving forward. Tonight I am going out to dinner with my son. I am looking forward to it and my plan is to do the doggie bag thing where you ask for the doggie bag at the beginning and pack up half before you start eating. I think I can do that. Wish me luck. Well the weekend is here. Are those harder days for you? It is harder for me because I am home all day. I need to make a plan. This will be the end of my first week. How many weeks have you been doing this? Well, hope you have a relaxing weekend and that the rest helps your cold. Take Care

How is your journey going? I have to be stronger with family who try to sabatoge...hubby brought home crusty loaf today and I caved-it was so good and I haven't had any for a long time. Not the best choice, I know, but I reminded myself that the body treats white bread like sugar so I talked to myself reminding myself that I was actually eating one dessert every time I ate 1 slice so that slows me down a little. Loaf now gone and I'll ask him not to do that again for a long time.

Caught an awful cold today and feeling punky.

Hope things are well with you.

I also do well in the morning and for lunch since I pack it in the morning and work at a place with no other food options. But it seems at night I just crave food. I think I use it to relieve the stress from the day at work. I find it helps to keep food only to the kitchen in my house and then I try not to go back in after supper dishes are done. They say to make plans to replace the time in the evening when you use to eat with some activity you enjoy. I am not very talented hobby wise, but I like to write and to learn so I usually write and read. I think it might help me to take some classes in the evenings, but I am not a real social butterfly and so joining things is not easy for me to do. How do you handle those evenings to make them easier for you. I know tracking is hard and I hate doing it, but I think the people who succeed are the ones that do because they get a real picture of what they eat. I am going to make mysef do it and I am just happy it is so easy on this sparkpeople web site. They seem to have the nutritional values for almost everything! My other challenge is sticking with something for more than two weeks. I am hoping that this time will be better. Looks like you have already seen some good progress. Good for you! Well hope your day went well. Let's check in at the end of the day tomorrow and hope to report a successful day too. Good Luck

sorry to hear you have a knee that is causing trouble. I hurt my knee last year on ice and fell hard and was incapacitated several months and finding it hard to get out of couch potato mode as it still hurts some days. At least swimming doesn't hurt it but would like to be able to walk more with our dog. Walking gets us all out of the house and away from the food and I think that helps.
I find that mornings I do ok with the eating part but as the day goes on i start to slide more and more. I hate recording things but have been told it helps. What is your biggest challenge?

That is great that you took that preventative step and got rid of all those treats. I need to do the same today. I should have swam today too, but choose to sleep in on my last day off before work starts up again. My name is Jean, by the way. You answered my goal post. That was kind of you to do. I would like to stay in touch as we work our way through this life change too. My first order of business is to work on tracking my food every day and then slowly add back exercise. I have a bum knee lately, so I am letting it rest, but will see the doctor on Monday because resting it for a few months has not really helped. Well hope you have a great day and reach all your goals for the day.

missed swimming on Mon as they were cleaning the pool but have plans with mom to go on Thurs. always good to have a buddy to help keep us from making excuses for not going out each day.

Just starting out. I am taking this challenge to help me get started on my hope to lose weight and feel better. The feel better part is the part that I need to change. I have been obese for many years now and my body just is losing the fight: bad back, hurting knees, lack of energy, etc. I need to get back to walking and swimming and I know that means up and motivated very early in the morning. I am hoping by feeling part of a team it will be easier than doing this alone.
