Ang, thank-you for all your focus and time on this. That reading was very interesting and hit many areas spot-on. I really found the part of the frog quite interesting. Because I really didn't know why it bothered me when it was such a peaceful dream and the frog had done nothing to scare me. It really did fit into my childhood, in terms of care-taking and family. I was always one to "leap into" things without looking, very impulsive kid. The moose I was more familiar with but the whale, that was quite insightful. I had a room for a long time at work that I was allowed to set up for counselling. I chose the Orca whale as my theme. There was a border up top of whales diving in and out of the water. The walls were a soft grey-blue. I had a large painting style poster of a Orca whale surfacing out of the water at night with all the beauty of the ocean seen below. I had a mobile of sea animals in the corner. I had so many people - children to adults - who came in that room and went "ahhhh, I feel like I came home". It was such a peaceful room and I did my best work in that room. I was so sad when the powers that be changed it all round to create an office. I think that after reading all this, I might get another whale poster for my new office. I haven't done much in it yet as nothing has felt right but I think it's time to create a soothing office again.

Oh and the song bird, really interesting. I've had one little guy that used to sit outside my old office window - until I moved this May to a new place - and he'd look right at me. I called him "my buddy." I also have a guy that hops around in front of my patio window in my apt, he's my "friend." Now I have a song bird that flies around my window at my new place. Add in the dream from my friend that shows new beginnings, I guess I have to open up to the universe and figure out what's blocking me from that. Thank-you again.

CHICAGOTOM - I do these readings for entertainment purposes only. You may not feel the messages fit you. However, if they do, please let me know. I am fairly new to animal totem reading, I read people very well one one one, so I can usually tell if these are dead on or far off. But tell me anyway. It helps me grow in my gifts.

LONG LIFE – DOG
A dog reminds you that kindness will often get you a lot further than criticism. Allow yourself to be gentle with those around you and to accept that their paths are not necessarily similar or conjoined with yours. Dog can also be a reminder that you should always be loyal and truthful to yourself. You should make a point of being your own best friend. By having self respect and self value you can love yourself first. This is essential for you to be of great assistance to others. Having self respect will assure that others will respect you.

People with this animal totem have a great spirit and a huge capacity to love. It takes a lot to break a your spirit. People with a Dog as an animal totem are usually helping others or serving humanity in some way. You embody the loving gentleness of best friend and the fierce energy of protector. You will have a deep understanding and compassion of human shortcomings, and have the compassion for unconditional acceptance and love.

If Dog has come to you in a Dream: The dream suggests that your strong values and good intentions will enable you to go forward in the world and bring you success. The dream dog may also represent someone in your life who exhibits these qualities. Alternatively, to see a dog in your dream indicates a skill that you may have ignored or forgotten. If the dog is vicious and/or growling, then it indicates some inner conflict within yourself. It may also indicate betrayal and un-trustworthiness. If the dog is dead or dying, then it means a loss of a good friend or a deterioration of your instincts. Also consider common notions associated with the word dog, such as loyalty (“man’s best friend”) and to be “treated like a dog”. To dream that you are feeding a dog means that you are nurturing an old skill or talent. It also implies that you need to put more time and effort into fostering your friendships. If you dream that a dog has puppies, then it refers to your nurturing abilities.

Additional Associations for Dog: Fidelity; Loyalty; Unconditional Love; Unconditional Acceptance; Assistance; Intelligence; Friendship; Obedience; Guardianship; Protection; Community; Cooperation; Reliability; Nobleness; Trustworthiness; Service; Resourcefulness;
Communication; Sensory Perception

SHORT JOURNEY – TUNA (The Tuna’s message is short – you’re in trouble of getting caught up on another’s problems (as in getting caught in the net with them). There is also a warning about accumulating toxins in your system (perhaps environmental, food, or even emotionally - is someone is trying to “poison” you against an idea or another person?)

LONGER JOURNEY - RABBIT
Rabbit reminds us to examine and utilize the tools we have within ourselves. Although our instincts are innate, they also need nurturing and development. Rabbit meanings deal primarily with abundance, comfort, and vulnerability. Traditionally, rabbits are associated with fertility, sentiment, desire, and procreation.

It may also indicate a need for more planning or to check those plans already set in motion. Do not box yourself in a corner. Be aware that you may also need to examine the kinds of foods you eat. Perhaps a vegetarian diet, if only for a short time, can help you strengthen and heal.

You are often unpredictable and spontaneous, have fast reflexes and good coordination, are highly observational and alert, gentle and nurturing as well as clever and quick-witted. Rabbit people are quick to succeed and are highly skilled at success not only in their own lives but in advising those around them. You can instinctively sense what paths lead to danger, and which to success.

To see a rabbit in your dream signifies luck, magical power, and success. You have a positive outlook on life. Alternatively, rabbits symbolize abundance, warmth, fertility and sexual activity.

In particular, to see a white rabbit in your dream symbolizes faithfulness in love. The white rabbit also serves as a guide to steer you toward the right direction. To see a black rabbit in your dream refers to fear of intimacy.

If the rabbit is hopping in your dream, then it indicates fertility. You will be surrounded by children. Alternatively, the dream may be analogous to your lack of commitment and how you jump from one thing or another. If you dream that the rabbit scratches or bites you, then it means that you need to pay more attention to your personal relationship or love life.

Additional Associations for Rabbit: Movement in life; Fertility; Sensitive; Artistic; Plan for possibilities; Check what is in motion now; Move carefully in work or play; Allows for taking advantage of brief chances available; Guile paradox and contradiction; Living by one’s own wits; Receiving hidden teachings and intuitive messages; Quick thinking; Humility; Moving through fear; Strengthening intuition

MESSAGE – MOTH
It's important to note the symbolism of nocturnal creatures because night-time proclivities have specific philosophical meanings. Nocturnal Animal Symbolism Includes: Dreams, Shadows, Otherworldliness, Secret Knowledge, Psychic Awareness. We gather these symbolic attributes because night creatures conduct their life-sustaining activities in complete darkness. As humans, we may translate this as symbolic of living our lives by intuitive feeling rather than physical sensory perception.

Philosophically speaking, night creatures do not tumble in the dark, and neither do humans. We use our dreams, our awareness, and our deeper, inner knowing to navigate through the darkest hours of our lives. Faith is another tool we use to move through shadowy times of uncertainty, and the moth also shares this aspect. The moth never questions provision. She has complete faith that all of her needs will be meet each night.

A Quick-List of Symbolic Moth Meanings: Vulnerability, Determination, Concealment, Attraction, Subtlety , Intuition, Fatih.

Even in navigation, when we observe the moth to fly into artificial light or flames, the moth demonstrates its faith and determination. It is still unproven as to why the moth is driven to light - but the best hypothesis is that the moth navigates by lunar light. In the absence of moonlight, the moth moves to the next best thing: man-made light. Even at the risk of loosing its life, the moth is ever-vigilant in following its path of light. This may also serve as a moral to us to keep our own vigilance, but not fall victim of blind faith. Here we see a fragile vulnerability in the moth. The moon is her mother, and she will follow her course at all cost. This makes her open to distraction, vulnerable to harm. Here we may find another message to adjust our course as our path indicates rather than drive forward without heeding important signs along the way. As a creature of the night, and by her navigational devices, we see the moth is highly influenced by the power of the moon. This aspect ties in with animal symbolism of intuition, and psychic awareness.

Indeed, those with the moth totem will find this creature a magnificent assistant in developing higher awareness, and psychic enhancement. However, with higher perception we sometimes overstep into the realm of confusion. It is important to seat ourselves in grounding foundations when we step in-tune with the lunar aspects of the moth. In other words, fly high with the moth - but always have a clear runway for happy, safe landings.

More Moth Meanings: Suggestion, Attraction, Allure

The female moth is subtle in her scent, wafting out like a loving tendril pulling in her mate. She has no doubt about her ability to attract her lover (those pheromones are powerfully effective!). Us humans would do well to follow the same cue. We do not have to be overt in our advances to attract our mates. Rather, the art of subtle allure can be learned from the moth.

A master of disguise, the moth can blend in to the point of invisibility. This is a metaphor for us to use our environment to our advantage, blend in when necessary, adjust and adapt when the situation requires it.

SHADOW – RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD (You dislike this bird so much, because it is a symbol of change and you do not do well with change. Do not fear this beautiful bird.)
He is letting you know that the forces of nature are at work and that big changes are coming into your life right now. These changes have been slowly manifesting all around you and are now ready to burst forth and become reality. If you pay close attention to where you see the Redwing Blackbird you may be able to foresee what changes are coming.

Alternatively the Redwing Blackbird may also be an omen – letting you know that you will be a participant of a close family emotional shift that is important to their personal growth. It is important for you to stay grounded throughout this shift and to allow them the space to make the changes necessary. You are meant to be in a supportive role without inserting your own intentions or propaganda. Try to be the non judgmental, unconditionally accepting force that provides balance, grounding and a safe haven for those experiencing change. Do not participate in the drama – simply be there for them.

Redwing Blackbird opens you to receive new adventures and life experiences. You have an awareness of all changes of perception as they unfold within you. Your psychic abilities are generally used to bring forth latent gifts and creativity for those around you. You show them how to move with determination, focus and tenacity. You know how to use your power to its fullest potential. You bring forth the magic of the unseen worlds and balance it with the forces of nature and the earth. You are a messenger of new awakening. You have a strong connection with Nature and use your intuition freely in support of her. You bring new surprises to those around you when they least expect it.

To see a Redwing Blackbird in your dream can signify a lack of motivation. You are not utilizing your full potential. Alternatively, it represents jealousy, lust or temptation.

Additional Associations of Redwing Blackbird: Enchantment; The Gateway; The inner call; protection of family; Ability to sway with the winds of change; Guide; Illumination, Magician

ADDITIONAL MESSAGE
SHARK - Survival by instinct and acting without judgment. Sharks have a bad reputation as being dangerous, fearless and unpredictable. They can ignite a feeling of fear and terror in many people. If there is a situation that needs to be scared away, the shark totem will help as the shark has the power to fend off negative elements. Having no swim bladder the shark can never stop swimming, or it would sink to the bottom, so staying busy and active is important. The shark's sensitivity to electromagnetic currents is a call to develop and refine sensory ability in order to bring a greater connection with the spiritual realm. Studying aromatherapy would be beneficial to help develop hunting prowess.

YOU MENTIONED UNICORN – This also contains a message for you. If you are on our team, then you should know what a Shaman is – a spiritual leader who is believed to have the ability of prophecy and healing. The Unicorn is a Shaman Journey Totem. If you have not considered being one, then you might want to pursue the journey to see if this is what you are being called to do.

The unicorn is an archetype of purity and innocence. He is by definition a magical animal, not bound by earthly form. Shamans who are drawn to the unicorn as their power animal have a deep affiliation for the spiritual realm and have a natural gift for shamanic journeying. Your innate sensitivity opens you to the innocence and wisdom of the unicorn.
The unicorn power animal has many positive characteristics: His white coat symbolizes the essence of purity. The single horn of the unicorn is associated with the opening of the third eye, an organ of spiritual vision. The timid unicorn is associated with innocence, clear vision and even virginity. A unicorn has astonishing powers of perception way beyond the limited senses of the material realm. It is not for nothing that the unicorn is known for its power of flight. He can cover great distances, carrying you rapidly and safely through the spiritual realm.

When on your spiritual journeys with your unicorn guide, no words are needed. Simply open your spirit and wait for a clear, radiant light to illuminate your mind. You are sharing your consciousness with your unicorn power animal, which can be a giddying experience! Relax, trust your instinct, and enjoy the intimate bond with your totem animal.

The unicorn is a creature of emotion and instinctive understanding. When journeying with your unicorn power animal do not seek to understand what you experience with your intellect. Rather, call upon your bond with you unicorn spirit guide for an instinctive, intuitive and immediate reaction to events as they unfold. Your response will be far more appropriate when using instinct and intuition instead of reason, and your progress will be far swifter than were you alone. Suspend disbelief, trust to his innocent purity!

When you return from your shamanic journey, you are sure to miss the unicorn's astonishing companionship, but he need not leave you entirely. Continue to sense the light and lift of his presence when going about your life in the material world. Those around you will notice and appreciate your light and gentle touch, and you will transform many people and situations as you do so.

JETTA - I tell everyone that these readings are for entertainment purposes. That the messages they contain may not be correct. However, if you find that any of it fits you, please let me know. Ang

LONG LIFE – GIRAFFE
When Giraffe stretches her neck and peeks into your life it is time to allow your foresight to lead the way. You know what you have been predicting all along – so take action and follow through. Your gut instincts and clairvoyance are telling you something. Listen to your heart.

You have the gift of higher perception and inner awareness. Your gentleness and gracefulness in action are always apparent to others. You have learned to make your words count and share your awareness of your surroundings with others. You often know the future, can sense what is going to happen and what lies over the horizon. You should never become complacent and lose sight of the future. Life will become increasingly difficult until you set your sights once more on the path ahead. You also have very strong ties to family and friends, especially parents and children.

To see a giraffe in your dream suggests that you need to consider the overall picture. Take a broader view on your life and where it is headed. The dream may also be a metaphor on how you are “sticking your neck out” for someone.

Pay attention to your thoughts, and to the omens around you. The messages are clearer now than they have ever been.

Crow as a messenger could also be letting you know that perhaps you are spreading yourself a little bit thin. It’s time to step back – reassess where you are at and take stock of your own dreams and aspirations. Being clear about our own desires is key in manifesting our intentions.

You have a great deal of personal integrity. You work hard at being mindful of your opinions and actions and are willing to walk your talk, speak your truth and embrace your life’s mission. You shift through changes and phases of your life with effortless ease and are willing to swoop in on opportunities at a moments notice. You have a tendency to have no concept of time as a linear entity and know in your heart that time is literally the existence of the past, present and future in a single moment. You live for now.

Dreaming of Crow is usually a message from your sub-conscience. If the crow is flying is means that you need to bring what is hidden in sub-conscience to the surface in order to move forward in your life. If the Crow is feasting your sub-conscience is telling you that your current course of action will bring forth a great bounty – however make sure that what you are manifesting is what you really want in your life. You have a great deal of confidence in who you are and where you are going in life. You are looked upon as an authority figure. You are nurturing and protect your children well.

If Bear comes drifting through your Dreams it could signify that it is time to explore your thoughts. Are you caught in the rut of compulsive thinking? SASSI - YOUR TOTEM READING - I always let people know this is for fun. There could be things that apply to you, but I could have also made a mistake. If there are things that fit you, please let me know. Ang

SASSI
LONG LIFE - ORCA
Orca (Killer Whale) -- Creator of the Cosmos, breaking down the barriers of the human mind, obliterating the concept of good or evil, using the vibrational energy of song to heal, brings food and aid to a chief injured and helpless on the ice. If Whale has come swimming into your life examine your own use of creativity and apply your own creative intuition to formulas as this is what imbues them with power and magic. Creativity for the sake of creativity is not what the Whale teaches. It awakens great depth of creative inspiration, but you must add your own color and light to your outer life to make it wonderful. The sound of the Whale teaches us how to create with song. You are being asked to embrace the unknown.

It may also be that your current circumstances are born from an emotional womb. In other words, your reality is intrinsically connected to your thought and your emotional choices. Some emotions we bury beneath the fathoms of our consciousness. The whale can help you understand on a deeper level the actions that have caused unrest in your daily life. Alternatively, the whale has come to facilitate emotional clarity, and help us navigate through the often ambiguous and confusing seas of emotion.

You have a deeper awareness of the world around you and a connection to the cosmic consciousness. You recognize that what you see is not necessarily the reality of what actually is. You are easily able to bridge these differences and integrate all things into the truth of what actually is. Whale people are very nurturing and have very strong ties to their community at large. Often they are the movers and shakers passionately standing up for what is right locally. Whale people love to get lost in their own creativity but often have to find a balance with this world and the real world.

If Whale has come to you in your Dreams it can represent your intuition and awareness. You are in tune with your sense of spirituality. Alternatively, a whale symbolizes a relationship or business project that may be too big to handle. You are feeling overwhelmed.

To see a Killer Whale in your dream indicates that you need to be more social or more vocal about something. Step up and speak up. Alternatively, the dream symbolizes spiritual guidance. You are ready to explore your emotions, but you need to make the connection between the conscious and subconscious aspects of yourself.

Additional Associations for Whale: Navigation; Moving through emotional depths; Effectively expressing emotional experiences; Using emotional energy for fuel and not being consumed by emotional floods; Deeper Awareness; Cosmic Consciousness; Emotional rebirth and understanding; Nurturing and devotion to community; Appreciation for beauty (especially song and dance); Importance of balance (emotional and otherwise); Strong sense of family; Creative imagination; Reaching within or outside to find inspiration; Don’t hold back your endeavors; Be strong and move swiftly; All knowledge associated with voice, psychic, and telepathic abilities of the sea

You do not need to feel ashamed or pressured in any way by your friends and peers in that what you choose is different from them. Stand strong and proud and own who you are! Your individuality is your strength.

Your strength is in knowing exactly who you are. You have integrity and always stay true to yourself in decisions and life choices. Friends and peers look up to your knowledge and innate wisdom. You see life for what it is – a long journey with short stops to enjoy the spoils along the way. You move through life with pride and authority.

When you dream of a Moose, it means to pay close attention to the elders around you for they hold they wisdom of days gone by. To dream of a moose in its natural habit means you can expect a beneficial change of circumstances coming your way now. To dream that you shoot a moose signifies that you can expect that some simmering family conflict is about to boil over. A baby moose means that a lucky break is about to happen, most likely in connection with a journey.

Additional Associations for Moose: Magic of life and death; Acknowledges the truths that have been denied by the soul; Movement to and from the soul world; Movement in the void; Finds the parts of the soul that have been hidden; Building self-respect and self-esteem; Strength; Wisdom; Beauty of movement

MESSANGER – SONG BIRD - Message – It is time to sing your own song. (You have been hesitant to do so.)
The Song Bird signifies stimulation of new growth and renewal in many areas of life. He teaches that any changes can be made with joy, laughter and a song in your heart. Song Bird shows you how to ride the winds of passion within your heart and become independent and self reliant through this change. Song Bird will teach you how to move forward with grace, tenacity, perseverance and assertion. Are you letting go of personal dramas? Ones that no longer serve your higher purpose? Are you exercising compassion and patience in mental, spiritual and emotional areas? Song Bird will teach how to incorporate new beginnings with faith and trust in the process. It is time to believe in yourself and use the inspiration that is given. Listen carefully. It is time sing your own song for a new period in your life.

You have the ability to will new growth into your life at any given moment. All you have to do is make a wish, be patient, and watch how it comes true. SHADOW: Wharf Rat - Are you saving everything to the point you are close to hoarding? Do you examine things too much – nitpick everything apart to the point of taking the joy out of it for yourself or another – over analyze everything? Do you overstay your welcome or dominate a conversation?

Message: Listen more. When you have accomplished something, end it. Do not hang on it and nitpick it apart – looking for mistakes (whether in yourself or another). Be more spontaneous – don’t think of 20 reasons not to do a thing, or go somewhere. Don’t save everything that no longer serves you – whether it’s a pattern of behavior, a belief system, or clothes you can no longer wear.

PERSONAL FEELING: You may have someone close to you who is like that and you are afraid of becoming that person yourself.

FROGS ARE OUR FRIENDS.....
When the frog jumps into your life it may indicate now is a time to find opportunities in transition. It is there to help you swim easily through some tough life changes
It may also signal the need to enhance your intuition, and strengthen your connection with the spirit world.

Frog also symbolizes coming into your own personal power.
Often travelers use this totem to give them a little reassurance while traveling.

YOU ASSOCIATE A FROG WITH A NIGHTMARE THAT STILL HAUNTS YOU FROM CHILDHOOD. WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW A FROG IS NOT A SYMBOL TO FEAR. Dreaming of the frog as a child would have meant that you were facing some changes that were happening quickly – perhaps a new school, a death, parents divorced, having to move or a new school. The frog in a dream means that you were trying to stop or prevent the changes from happening. If the frog jumped at you, that means you were leaping from one thing to another. So stop thinking of the frog as a fearful animal.

It was your totem at the time and meanst that you had a genuine empathy towards others and you always did your best to try to help others when they were feeling bad. If you were a child and trying to do this, you were overwhelmed. A frog person is close to their family, especially their parents, and you will generally try to do anything to keep the relationship strong.

Sassi, Tom and Jetta. Will be happy to give you a reading. Give me until next week. We have had storms come in every night since Monday knocking out power everywhere. We expect another storm to hit tonight. Lightening has been the worst ever - beautiful though. Power outage has been intermittent for us, but for others around us, people have been without power for a week. Jetta, even with little information - there is a lot there. Ang

Ang, sorry I can't settle on one animal for many of the questions. As I mentioned, I've always attracted animals and have been drawn to animals, all my life. I was known up north as the "vet" and people would bring me their sick and injured animals. So it's tough to think of just one specific animal.

QUESTIONS
Long Life Totem
1.What animal did you collect as a child or were most attracted to? Unicorns, cows, ducks, cats, orca whales, pigs and wolves.
2.If any animal could be your pet or companion, what would you choose? Horse
3.If you could be an animal, what would you like to be? Moose or Orca Whale
4.Which animal has appeared most in your dreams since childhood? Cats
5.Which animal do you seem to bump into the most throughout your life? Lots of animals, I seem to attract them. Cows, moose, deer, cats, dogs, horses are the main ones.
6.Which animal are you most afraid of? Wharf Rats

Journey Totem
1.Which animal are you starting to see more of that you haven’t noticed before? Birds
2.Are you dreaming of a particular animal now? Which one? No
3.Have you been thinking about a specific animal lately? Which one? Moose
4.Have you been attracted to an animal recently, or starting to collect figures, pictures, or jewelry of that animal? Which one? Moose - my home is filled with moose.

Message Totem
1.What animal recently surprised you? A song bird that flew around my open window, trying to get inside.
2.What animal have you seen in the past few hours or days? Birds
3.Think of an animal right this minute – what is it? Unicorn

Shadow Totem
1.What animal has ever attacked you? A nasty mama cow and a nasty mamma moose at different times. I’ve also been bit by a couple dogs.
2.What animal scares you the most? More a healthy respect, grizzly and cougar. Wharf rats freak me totally out.
3.Which animal would you run from? I generally don't run when encountering an animal but I sure would (and have) run from wharf rats.
4.Which animal appears in your nightmares? None. I only had one animal appear in a nightmare – a frog. It happened in childhood and to this day, I do not understand the nightmare. It was so pleasant and beautiful, then the frog said “croak” and I woke up in a cold sweat. Scared me for a long time.
5.If an animal appears in a story you are reading, or in a movie or on television, which animal scares or makes you feel uneasy? I'd say I don't like watching movies about spiders.

LONG LIFE – COYOTE – Message: Are you manipulating someone or being manipulated by someone. Are you all work and no play? Learn to laugh at your own mistakes.

The coyote symbolizes playfulness, nonsense, intelligence, cunning and joy. Coyote people form strong family bonds and have strong preferences. They are highly adaptable, opportunistic, and versatile. They are often considered to be pranksters or tricksters.

People with coyote totems are often cunning. Coyote’s barks are very shrill and distinctive in how they call their pack together. Coyote people can use their own voice in ways that draw people together as well, but you may sometimes have a hidden agenda.

Your personal strengths are adaptability, communications, strong ties to family and working well with others. The challenge with a coyote as a totem can be deception – either allowing ourselves to be deceived by others or being inclined to deceive or manipulate others to get your own way. The Coyote asks you to discern your true motivations and to play fair with others.

Coyote dreams often appear when you feel someone has “played you” or mistreated you somehow. It can indicate a person with an agenda or a need to be more cunning yourself to avoid being taken advantage of by another.

Much magic has been associated with the coyote, but the magic does not always work. Even in its not working, it serves a purpose. There is always hidden wisdom where the coyote is concerned. Coyotes are skillful, but often look for ways to do things that will not involve the use of their own skill. They often look for shortcuts. They remind us not to become too serious and that anything is possible.

Oftentimes, the coyote makes things more complicated than they need to be. If coyote has shown up as a totem, you may wish to ask yourself some questions. Are you or those around you being too serious? Have you forgotten that play time is essential to health? Are you complicating what is really simple in some area of your life? Is someone playing tricks on you?

The coyote teaches the balance of wisdom and folly and how they both go hand in hand. The image of the wise fool has been used in the lore of many societies. This is the individual who seems to be a simpleton and yet the words and actions have a much greater wisdom than is initially recognized. Are you not seeing the wisdom of your life and its events? The coyote will help you.

Coyote's have a very close-knit family unit, especially when children are involved. They will sometimes mate for life. The father is very conscientious and participates in the care and raising of the young. Both parents train the young in hunting techniques. The male cares for the mate while she is pregnant, helping to protect and feed her. If something does happen to the mother, then the male takes over the care of the young.

JOURNEY – RABBIT
Message – Rabbit - Warning

Associated with the Rabbit: Movement in life; fertility; sensitive; artistic; plan for possibilities; check what is in motion now; move carefully in work or play; take advantage of brief chances; living by your own wits; receiving intuitive messages; quick thinking, humility; moving through fear; strengthen your intuition.

Rabbit people are unpredictable and spontaneous, have fast reflex’s and good coordination, are very observant and alert, gentle and nurturing and clever and quick-witted.

Rabbit people always know where to go next in their own lives. But…..Rabbit people rely a lot on their intuition so much they sometimes forget to “look” before they “leap.” This can lead to mistakes or dangerous situations. Rabbit people can become so focused on their fears than on the end goal, that anxiety will hold you back from making any big decisions in your life and moving forward.

A rabbit represents caution. They tend to appear when we are tempted to “run away” rather than facing a problem head on Ask yourself what it is that you are afraid of and how you can address this fear in a constructive manner. This may indicate a need for more planning or to check up on plans that have been set in motion. Do not box yourself into a corner.

They also represent fertility and if you are trying to become pregnant, a sign of a rabbit could signal that the time is right.

MESSAGE - DOG
Noble, faithful, loyal, teaching, protection, and guidance - The dog is a protector and guardian. Their acute hearing and keen sight forewarned their masters of impending danger. They serve selflessly never asking for their service to be praised. They hold the energies of unconditional love and teach us its true meaning.

Domesticated dogs are faithful companions to humans and enjoys being useful by serving human friends. Their sense of spirit and the ability to love even when abused is incredible. The dog teaches those with this totem how to give and receive love unconditionally. It also carries the energy of forgiveness. People with dog medicine would do well in service oriented jobs.

Dogs are intelligent and sensitive. They are able to sniff out dangerous situations accurately and guide us into safety. Psychic gifts have long been are associated with the dog because of their ability to detect subtle energy frequencies often unknown to mankind. If dog suddenly appears in your life pay attention to your immediate surroundings and let the dog guide your footsteps.

Certain breeds of dog were designed for specific functions. The study of the breed and its purpose can help you define the energy associated with it. Since wolves and coyotes are its descendants these should be studied as well.

The behavior of a dog often reflects the personality of its owner. Through its observation and constant interaction with you it anticipates your next move, and serves as a mirror image of who you truly are. The dog is a great teacher for those who are willing to be loyal students. The choice is yours.

People with a Dog totem are usually helping others or serving humanity in some way.
Dog medicine embodies the loving gentleness of best friend and the fierce energy of protector.

Dogs have a message about service, one that they show us everyday. First, they love unconditionally, even when they are treated cruelly. Second, they will try with all their heart, to complete whatever task we give them, even if they don’t understand it and it taxes their physical capabilities. Third, dogs do not judge or gossip. They simply try the best they can. Fourth, they do all this without thanks or praise. The message to anyone on a spiritual path, then, is to be in service and to be there without thinking of gain, to do one’s best, and to do the service joyfully with unconditional love.

SHADOW – CRICKET – Trust our intuition – it is more accurate than you believe. Make sure you are grounded and balance when exploring your intuition and psychic abilities. The Cricket may be reminding you that you are using your gifts without proper grounding.

The Cricket’s chirp is usually a happy voice and speaks to your inner voice. He teaches you to jump over and leave behind difficult or troublesome situations. It is considered a good omen and to leap into new opportunities.

But the cricket is not always a happy omen. A cricket will chew holes in clothing. That meaning for you is to ask yourself what is “chewing you up” inside?” What is bothering you or missing in your life? The Cricket is trying to help you get your emotional body in balance.

DREAM OF SPIDERS: I am going to mention this, because it ties into the Life Message of the Coyote – involving being manipulated. A spider dream indicates you are being manipulated by someone or you are the manipulator. If you think you are being manipulated, find out how you can protect yourself. If you are the manipulator – stop. Once the problem is resolved, the spider nightmare will go away.

Obviously you are into cats in some shape or form.

LONG LIFE - Cat (going with domestic type of cat for this)
A Cat totem is one that encourages clear perception, an agile mind and strong resourcefulness and independence. The cat can also be a strong challenger, encouraging you to come up with new ideas and vist new places. Because a cat is quick and clever, it can offer inspiration if you find yourself stuck in a problem. If you are looking for added courage, call upon your cat totem for help.

The cat's energy field is said to rotate in the opposite direction of the human energy field. Because of this, it is believe that the energy of cats can neutralize any negative energy that may affect a human. For this reason cats are often viewed as powerful healers.

Cat people are very loving and affectionate, but on their own terms. They can appear to others as unpredictable, but in fact, you have your own unique perspective in which everything makes sense to you - though not to those around you. Your intuition is more important than logic and you don't easily bend to reason.

Cats in the home often serve the role of healer and will sit near anyone in the household who needs healing, speeding the recovery period. A cat's purring can help reduce his owner's stress or anxieties. Cat purring can ease discomforts such as stomach pain, and also help boost immune systems. It is also important to pay attention to the health of your cat. Cats will often take on the symptoms of ailments being suffered by their humans. When this happens, appreciate their talents as diagnosticians, so take heed. Get your cat to the vet AND make an appointment for yourself to have a health checkup.

Cat shows how to clarify perceptions which allows new ideas to manifest, encourages mental and emotional agility, aids in being resourceful and stealthy tactics, teaches courage and confidence. Do you need to be more independent? Are you using your resources the best of your ability? Is it time to start a new project? Cat will show how to continue the process of opening your intuition for soul growth

JOURNEY - WHITE TIGER - YOU NEED TO WORK ON BALANCE
Role: Trailblazer; Lesson: Balance; Medicine: Lunar Magic; Element: Water
Attributes: Passion, sensuality, devotion, adventurous, strength, solitary, ambitious

Symbol of passion, power, devotion. Associated with water and have all the properties of the water element. The White Tiger is an adept swimmer. In China the Mystic White Tiger is associated with the west, autumn and all metals. Tigers have a strong connection to the full and new moon.

When a Tiger enters your life, expect new adventure. You approach things slowly and silently with devotion and strength. You are seldom luke-warm - running to extremes either hot or cold, passion or detached. The challenge is in finding the balance between extremes and understanding that the two halves are not contradictions of one another, but parts of an whole. By experiencing first one facet of life, feeling and being then the “opposite", the Tiger learns the importance of Balance.

Tiger people do their best work at night. They are sensual, passionate people and devoted parents. These individuals possess an amazing reservoir of energy that is frequently held in reserve for times when it is genuinely needed, yet when circumstances warrant the release of this wellspring, they can tackle a problem, crisis or challenge with a focused intensity that can only be equated to a Tiger’s leap.

When a Tiger individual loves another, be this in a friend or lover, the loyalty, intensity and devotion that they lavish upon their loved ones leaves can be overwhelming for them and they might pull back. This can result in infedilty with the Tiger trying to find a like-minded partner. The result is that the mate left behind suffers a broken heart and the less - sensitive type of Tiger will be accumulating a negative karmic balance until he/she can identify this destructive behavior and learn to operate from a place of more compassion and Conscious Awareness.

The reverse of this will be the Tiger is so ensconced in loving others and pouring their entire Self into the chosen mate, that there is nothing left over to nurture their own soul. In both this instance and the previous illustration, the Lesson for the Tiger individual becomes one of learning to balance between passion and steadfastness, love of Others and a healthy love of Self. Once this middle-ground is reached, the result is a healthy and giving soul.

Often times the Tiger will walk through the flames of hell and back several times during their lifetime. Many painful lessons will be encountered wherein he/she will expend themselves to the point of exhaustion and utter depletion, to then arise like the Phoenix out of their own ashes and begin a new cycle of growth and learning.

MESSAGE - BIRD - YOUR MESSAGE APPEARS TO BE TO FLY AWAY FROM CONFLICT AND TO LIVE IN THE PRESENT.
Each bird variety has it's own strengths, weaknesses and warning. This is for birds in general - or any air animal. Wecome their presence. Birds in general are survivalists. They will first choose flight over fight. They instinctively know that fighting is a dangerous endeavor. Whereas flight is avoiding trouble: possible injury or death. Birds have superb reflexes. They teach us awareness and adaptability. Birds represent the air element and Air animal totems are also symbols of strength (both physical and mental) and sovereignty. Very important traits, particularly when we are experiencing new transitions or surroundings in our lives.
If air animal totems are catching your attention, you should feel very heartened by their presence. Allow their spirit to boost your confidence, and remind you that the ultimate power is within this present, unseen moment. Air animals are good omens, and their appearance is like a wink from god.

Air Animal Totems have a penchant for assisting us in matters of higher knowledge. Closest to the heavens, air animals are our best allies as they herald our desires to the very gods in the skies.o teachers of proper breathing. Song birds teach us about the healing properties of sound.

When a feather catches your attention and is discovered in an unexpected place, it is a gift for your path. Feathers bring us inspiring messages to remind of us our world and our connection to it. Their symbolic meanings inspire us to soar to new heights.

There are times when a feather becomes a reassurance symbol by appearing to you when you are going through the different phases in your life. Letting you know that you are loved and watched over. They remind you that you are still a part of the Whole.

SHADOW - LION - FACE YOUR FEELINGS
Symbolizes strength, assertiveness, personal power. You may be feeling anger or agression at someone else - or even mad or disapointed at yourself over a stuation. Lion represents a personal struggle to deal with your feelings. Lions war against a threatening situiaton or event in your life. Are you worried about losing your job, divorce, a major change in your life that you might veiw as a negative difference in you life. You most fear the Lion - so there is something dominating your thoughts and emotions that is bothering you a great deal.

If you are terrified by a lion, reassure yourself. The dream is expressing in strong images what you feel inside. It is a symbolic representation of strong psychological or emotional tensions you may experience in your life. Dreaming about a lion in this way is an invitation to examine what’s happening in your life that is causing tension and despair.

Most likely, you’re facing a challenging situation or behavior that is hard to comprehend at a conscious level and the lion appears as a spirit animal to help. It may be too hard to deal with or seem unacceptable to you and therefore is rejected out of your awareness, a bit like a protection, a defense mechanism. The presence of your lion spirit animal could be a warning to pay attention to a situation or person who’s creating worries or concerns for you.

On a positive note, a terrifying lion is likely indicating that you’re in the process of becoming more aware of the issues at hand. It works as a reminder that whatever is bothering you in your waking life needs to come out in the open to be dealt with. Bring forth the courage that lion totems symbolize.

The lion symbolizes majesty, power, bravery, and leadership, for the lion is the "king of the jungle." this is the time in your life to take control with absolute confidence and strength. Jung felt that the lion in the wild represented our latent passions. Is this the time to unbridle and explore your passions and to live life fully and courageously? This can also be a sign of a test of courage. For some African tribes, part of the rite of manhood concerned pitting one's strength against the lion's. You may be tested in an ara of your life. Garner your inner strength and you will be victorious. Personality: Lions are magnanimous and creative individuals. They tend to put themselves into situations that broaden their horizons. They can be broadminded and open to variations in the culture and lifestyle of others. They are natural leaders and organizers. Sometimes they need to keep a pompous attitude under control.

When you are scared by the presence of your lion spirit animal, whether it’s in dreams or in waking life, this could be an invitation to look at your “shadow self”. The shadow self is a part of yourself that you prefer to keep “in the shadow” or the dark. In other words, a part of yourself you would hide or reject because it’s not likeable, you or other people think it’s unacceptable, not worthy, etc.

Your spirit animal indicates the need to look at these aspects of yourself and resolve the tensions inner conflicts may create. For instance, by just starting to acknowledge parts of your “shadow self”, looking at them, perhaps understanding what they are about, what they are connected with, you can start bringing a better understanding of yourself.

LONG LIFE - FROG
Frog people are understanding, empathetic, sensitive, positive, introspective and pleasant. They are great listeners and advice givers. They relate well to others and know just what to say. They feel deeply for others and to their best to provide comfort and healing. They stick close to home – family is very important, especially their parents, and they keep close relationships. You have to take care to not absorb the emotions and feelings of others and hold them as your own. (This is also a warning under your Shadow - Whale)

On the downside, frog people will use harsh words or insults when they feel threatened. They like living fast-paced, fun-filled lives, but will often change their plans or goals, and can be perceived by others as being flakey.

Frogs are water and land creatures, thus giving them a split personality. They can be calm and nurturing, and in the next moment be unpredictable. Water is the element of emotion. Frog people are deeply emotional by nature and are not satisfied until they have explored experiences through encounters with others. They look for the most moving, the fullest, and richest of emotional connections. You will feel not just the joy and pleasure, but also great sorrow and pain. The danger would be that you become so immersed in your feelings that all balance and perspective is lost.

As a frog, you need to learn to balance between your emotions and reasoning to navigate any tumultuous situations. The message from frog is to look before you leap or to leap out of your old habits and open up to new opportunities.

Frog people feel better during spring and summer when their energy is at its highest. You may be going through an important transition in your life – a big life change or a spiritual one. The frog reminds us that change is a natural and positive part of life.

JOURNEY – TURTLE
When a turtle is flipped on its back, it can right itself by using its neck and head to flip itself back over. Turtle reminds you to use your head and knowledge to right yourself when your world gets flipped over.

A turtle is also a reminder to slow down to see our opportunities. Come out of your shells when your ideas are ready to be expressed. Take your time and let the natural flow work for you. Too much, too soon, can upset the balance.

If a turtle has appeared in your life you may need to start delegating duties, or let go entirely of some things, or withdraw from others (retreat to your shell) in order to recoup your energies. Has your life become too hectic? Are you taking time out for yourself?

It is believed that turtles use the sun to make vitamin D. Those with a turtle totem may need to check their own vitamin intake and adjust diet and vitamin supplements so that enough vitamin D is taken into the system.

SHADOW - WHALE
The whale, like the frog, is a water creature. Water is the emotional element. The whale symbolizes emotional creativity, well-being, nurturing, as well as emotional depth. The whale teaches you to apply your creative intuition throughout your life….but warns you to not get lost in your creative imagination and to stay in the real.

Both whale and frog are very empathic. Those who are magnetized by whale energy will tend to be incredibly deep in sensitivity. The depth of feeling whale-totem-people endure can be overwhelming. Whale people are super-perceptive about the feelings of those around them, and this can manifest into an internal pressure that can be quite crushing. If you are extraordinarily affected by the emotions of others, or your own emotions are so intense as to cause discomfort, your whale totem can help.

One who has the power of the Whale will see enhanced insight and intuition; a better sense of self allowing one the ability to use strong self-confidence and communicative powers to make intelligent and informed decisions. Travel, friendship, devotion to family, nobility and grace are all part of the whale.

Whales possess deeper consciousness, ancient energy and vibrations, family values, happiness and harmony, beauty, balance, beauty, social skills, increased powers of communication, affection, energy, grace, charm, charisma, and intelligence.

Your gifts are from Spirit, from light, and from God, and you are meant to use them. You have a fear of disconnecting from God. There is nothing wrong with asking Him for guidance on a daily basis and before a reading. I know several religions are touchy on the subject. I converted to Catholicism for many years and have sense fallen away for a variety of reasons. One being how this particular faith feels about such things. We need balance between our faith and being true to ourselves in order to strengthen our gifts and help others. It isn't easy.

thank you so much. Everything is a lot clearer now.
I used to be heavy into getting messages for people, reading cards, and doing automatic writing. Then one day it felt like the devil was trying to get in me and now realize that it was fear of disconnecting to God .
A couple of months ago I heard my daughter call out as I was just laying down. I even went to the window to see if she was outside but was nowhere around. I new something was wrong but could not get her on the phone. A few minutes later my Mom called and said Lisa had tried many times to reach me on the phone. 2 of my grandsons had been in an accident. The older of the two, then 17, rolled his van into a ditch, because of a patch of black ice. She had been calling my old number because she was upset. I think I knew then that I need to get back to accepting my feeling and learning.
This is just further validation. I need to further my studies and accept the messages that I get for others. most of the time I am afraid to give them the messages in case it is just in my own mind.
I used to read tarot cards for friends and they were pretty accurate...I guess the biggest thing is I need to trust in myself and that the information is coming from the angels and not something bad. Thanks again Pam

Long Life – Butterfly - With you for life or until you no longer need it.

People with the butterfly totem are joyful people who appear to others as bright and cheerful. Butterfly people tend to be optimistic and always looking for ways to grow and improve. Butterflies teach us that change is positive and should be embraced. Often your challenges in life have allowed you to spread your wings and reach new heights.

The butterfly represents a need for change and greater freedom, and at the same time it represents courage: One requires courage to carryout the changes necessary in the process of growth. It can give you clarity to your mental process, help you organize the project you are undertaking, and assist you in finding the next step in your personal life or career. The main message is that you are ready to undergo some type of transformation or internal growth.

The butterfly reminds us that we are all on a long journey of the soul. And in that journey, we encounter endless turns, shifts, and conditions that cause us to morph into finer beings. You have a gift for accepting change with grace and eloquence. The journey is our responsibility to make our way in faith and accept the changes as they come and emerge from our cocoon as a different person.

Journey – Wolf - With you for a short time.

Wolf people are patient, loyal, intelligent, intuitive, good communicators, wise and are problem solvers. You are also social butterflies and others come to you for advice (in particular family and friends). You have a network of loyal friends and family that are there for you when the going gets tough. Trust your intuition.

Wolf people are often very competitive and can become upset if the pecking order is disturbed, especially if it happens in your own home.

The wolf teaches us how to live with one mate our entire life. And while living in a pack, the wolf retains its individuality. People with a wolf totem make quick and emotional attachments and avoid confrontation. The wolf urges us to make sure that our loyalties are properly maintained. Get in touch with people you are neglecting, and invest some time an energy in a hobby you have been thinking about.

Be cautious In your approach to any difficult or tempting situations. Do not overextend yourself and instead trust your heart. Take the time to consider the situation from every angle and do not be afraid to say no. Do not be afraid to seek outside guidance and advice and a fresh perspective on a project. Do not bottle up your feelings – communication is key.

Shadow – Cobra - A test; lessons we need to learn

The Cobra represents wisdom, intuition, protection and some vanity. Snake people are charming, perceptive, patient, wise, sensual, sly, confident, decisive, innovative. It is a totem of intense duality and conflicting meanings. On a negative side, snakes can be hypocritical, or intentionally say one thing, but mean another (delivering a venomous bite before someone strikes at you). They can be possessive, overprotective (tightly wrap their significant other or family), which can lead to smothering.

Take things slowly. Do not rush around in day to day life, and do not be quick in your any decision making. Be patient, meditative and deliberate. Be aware of your surroundings. Tune in. Dangerous situations always send tiny vibrations before they arrive.

Snakes symbolize restlessness . Snake encourages you to shed your layers so you can get to your truest self. In dreams, the snake symbolizes facing your fears and revealing more of yourself. It can signal a transition in your life, new opportunities or changes.

Spend time reflecting on who you are and where you are headed. Meditate to quiet your mind. You are not stuck in a rut; you are just going through a phase. If you are afraid of the snake, then it symbolizes your fear of change. It may also mean that you are disconnected from yourself and the spirit realm, and that you should ground yourself with meditation and introspection. When we learn to connect with our surroundings, we can continue on the path of growth and rid ourselves of the trappings of the past.

From the time I was little I used to dream of cobras. One night I even thought there was one under my bed. Then when I was meditating...I was about 20 (63 now) I was seeing that cobra
again but this time I let it come to me. It changed in shape to a man with white hair. He was dressed all in white too. Somehow I knew he had been trying to talk to me forever but I was still a little afraid so he went away. I get afraid sometimes to let myself really see what is in the dark. I know there are things there and I can feel them. I am going to set up a tape recorder tonight and see what happens. I was told by 2 psychics that I was a high psychic and would never be happy unless I break the fear and take it fully on. I am not trying to sound overbearing just repeating. I used to get into all kinds of things especially automatic writing and I was pretty good but I got scared and stopped. I need to allow myself to fully embrace this feeling and see where it takes me.
I would appreciate any help or reading if you have time and I really help your cold is better.

Sorry for the late response. This cold has really knocked me out.

LONG LIFE TOTEM- WOLF

The wolf teaches how to establish order and harmony within your life. Wolves live in packs and by carefully defined rules. Every member of the pack knows it relationship to every other member. Wolves often mate for life and share in the care and affection toward the pups.

The wolf emphasizes the importance of listening to your inner thoughts and intuition. Fur and hair have long been symbols of psychic abilities. The wolf has both an inner and outer coat, giving it the ability to reflect the archetypal forces associated with psychic ability.

The wolf can help you discern your inner voice. Wolves have powerfully keen senses, especially the sense of smell. The sense of smell has been associated with spiritual idealism. Trusting your own insights will guard you from inappropriate action and lead you on your own path with determination.

The wolf will guide you in bringing new energy and strength into your life. When wolf shows up it is time to find a new path, take a new journey, take control of your life.

When wolf appears to you as a totem in your life he is bringing specific energy to assist you.
Wolves are the epitome of stamina, known to run 35 miles a day in pursuit of prey. They are highly misunderstood animals, who have gained the reputation of being cold blooded. In reality wolves are friendly and social creatures. Aggression is something they avoid, preferring rather to growl or create a posture to show dominance.

Even though living in close knit packs provide wolves with a strong sense of family, they are still able to maintain their individuality. Wolves represent the spirit of freedom, but they realize that having individual freedom requires having responsibilities.

Because wolf is a teacher and pathfinder, he comes when we need guidance in our lives. Those who have a Wolf Totem will move on to teach others about sacredness and spirituality. Wolf can also teach how to balance the responsibility of family needs and not to lose one's personal identity.

Wolf teaches us to develop strength and confidence in our decisions. He shows we will learn to trust our insights once we learn how to value our inner voice. This wisdom keeps us from inappropriate action. If wolf appears in your life examine where you need to develop more confidence and if you need more balance between friends, family, and yourself.

Not at all the picture of ferocity or terror, the Wolf is a creature with a high sense of loyalty and strength. Another misconception is that of the “lone wolf.” To the contrary, the Wolf is actually a social creature, friendly, and gregarious with its counterparts.

The Wolf is an incredible communicator. By using touch, body movements, eye contact as well as many complex vocal expressions – the wolf makes his point understood. Those with totem wolf symbols are of the same inclination – they are expressive both vocally and physically. Those who have the wolf as their totem animal are naturally eloquent in speech, and also have knack for creative writing.

When this gracious creature appears to us, and serves as a totem in our lives, the Wolf beckons us to ask these questions:
Are you thinking about a different form of education?
Are you being a true friend, and are your friends being true to you?
Are you communicating yourself clearly to others?
Are you being loyal to yourself?
Are you incorporating strategies and planning to achieve your goals?
Are you spending enough quality time with yourself, friends and family?

JOURNEY TOTEM - HORSE

If you are drawn to Horse, you feel a power in your spirit that is sometimes difficult to control. Horse is a symbol of loyalty and devotion, of unquestioning love and faith in his master. He says that you love to travel, and have more than a touch of gypsy in your soul. Horse is also your warrior spirit - the brave fighter who brings you safety in your journeys, both physical and metaphysical.

Horse's medicine includes power, stamina, endurance, faithfulness, freedom to run free, control of the environment, awareness of power achieved with true cooperation, interspecies communication, expanding one's own potential abilities, friendship and cooperation, travel, astral travel, guardian of travelers, warns of possible danger, guide to overcoming obstacles.

One of the most striking things about Horse is a dignity that is impossible to diminish. When let loose to run wild Horse becomes in a very short time the untamed spirit he was destined to be. Perhaps this is Horse's greatest medicine, the knowledge that no matter what we have borne in the past, there always exists in us the waiting seed of our true selves. Horse shows us how to carry our burdens with ease and with dignity, but more importantly, he shows us that we are always and forever free.

Horses, both male and female, will leave the security of home to find, or form, their own herd. Invoke horse if you haven't yet gained complete independence and need to stand on your own feet now that you are an adult. Horse medicine helps us to find our own place in the world.

A newborn horse gets up and is moving about an hour after it is born. And like the colt, we are unsure of our footing and will wobble at first on shaky legs. This initial experience is the hardest part of any new project. But if we persist in our efforts, we'll soon be galloping towards our goal. Therefore, we invoke Horse medicine to get us through the early stages of new learning.

Anyone who has ever ridden a horse knows that when he is trotting it is almost impossible to say in the saddle. But when we allow the horse to set his own pace and he begins to gallop, then riding becomes a pleasure. Horse teaches us that when we give our heart and soul full rein and let our spirit find its own rhythm, then we will ride through our lives with beauty and grace.

The most important thing to know about Horse is its ritual of child rearing. When Horse nurses its young the mare begins to be pulled down. Her back will sway, and her entire body seems to lower itself upon her legs. She gives her life to support life. When Horse deems it time for the colt to maintain on its own she refuses to let the little one nurse. Horse is one of the few animals that will wean the colt without human influence. She will not allow her young to destroy her own body. Horse medicine teaches us that when we have done our job to push the colt out on its own. We cannot let our children drain us dry. If we do, we will become haggard and swayed.

Riding a horse conveys a sense of freedom. It teaches that power cannot be attained by force, but rather that it is given to him who is willing to accept responsibility in a respectful manner. The power of the horse is the wisdom to remember all the steps in one's life and learn from them. This includes experiences from a previous life. Real power is strength used with wisdom. This requires love, compassion, and the willingness to share one's achievements and insights with others. It is important not to let our ego deny us access to this power.

The color of the horse you are drawn to is also significant. The white horse says that you feel responsibility very heavily, and you must guard against carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. The black horse travels into the void, the unknown, seeking truth and enlightenment. The reddish and red/brown colors are for humor, and says that you ease tense situations with a touch of humor. The yellow horse signifies new beginnings; awakenings and enlightenment.

Seeing yourself riding a Horse in your dreams may indicate you will see a project or event to successful conclusion. Falling off a Horse in your dreams indicates you’re nervous about a project or event you have scheduled. Dreaming of a Horse with reins, pulling a wagon, tied with ropes, etc., indicates you are feeling restricted and desire more freedom in your life. A bucking Horse in your dreams indicates a need to break old habits.

MESSAGE TOTEM - GERMAN SHEPARD / DOG

A well bred German Shepherd Dog is an outstanding companion pet that needs to have a purpose in his or her life. Since they are naturally highly protective, they do need to be regularly and routinely socialized, starting from a very early age. Despite their somewhat ferocious reputation, most German Shepherd Dogs, at least once socialized, are very calm, dependable dogs that are more likely to think through a problem than react with aggression.

Dogs can teach us so much - about judgment, about loyalty, about companionship, about love. If dog is your totem, what does it say about you? Look at how you compare to the qualities of dog - are you judgmental, faithful, loving, forgiving? Are those qualities you need to work on? Do you need to be more playful, more territorial or less territorial? Our totems teach us, that is why we have drawn them to us.

If a person carries Dog medicine, he or she is usually serving others or humanity in some way. Here you will find the charity worker, the philanthropist, the nurse, the counselor, the minister, and the soldier...The message that Dogs are trying to give you is that you must delve deeply into your sense of service to others. Canines are genuinely service-oriented animals, and are devoted to their owners with a sense of loyalty that supersedes how they are treated...It is as if a tolerant spirit dwells in the heart of every canine that asks only to be of service.

SHADOW TOTEM - GORILLA

A Gorilla totem is a confirmation that our endeavors are solid and steady. They remind us to stay grounded and handle our responsibilities. Gorilla helps us find our inner strength and our nobility of living, caring for our families and friends.

Gorillas live in troops, caring and protecting each other. Our families and friends are our troop and we must care for them in the same way.

A Gorilla totem also asks several questions:
Am I too materialistic?
Am I becoming selfish, letting my "troop" suffer because of my own desires?
Am I looking out for my own needs?
And also the needs of my family? They must balance each other.
Am I being too assertive?
Am I bullying others to get my own way? Is someone else doing that?

Use Gorilla as an example -- calm, steady, strong -- andyou can overcome anything.

The ape, although tremendously powerful, is, unless provoked, a gentle animal. As a totem animal, the ape may represent self control, self discipline, and the confidence to express strength through gentleness and kindness. If you have chosen the ape as your spirit helper, be assured that you will begin to notice a new respect from your fellow workers and in your family environment.

Gorillas have excellent memories and a keen sense of observation. They are found in groups and are quite social. If a person tries to harm anyone in their group the gorilla remembers that person and will have a tendency to charge that person every time he or she approaches. This indicates their undying loyalty to family and loved ones. Respect is very important to the gorilla.

Gorillas have acute hearing and respond to unusual sounds that are not part of normal activity. For those with this totem this indicates clairaudient abilities. Gorilla medicine people can hear vibrations and frequencies that others cannot. Hearing is one of their main gifts. They are great listeners and really hear what others are saying and respond accordingly.

Gorillas are conservationists eating only a few leaves from each plant always leaving several leaves so that the plant can replenish the leaves quickly. Those with this medicine care about the environment and need to have access to nature and its elements to maintain balance and harmony within themselves.

Gorillas have a gentle strength, patience and clarity of vision. Once they create a goal they stick with it until accomplished. They are extremely intelligent. Gorillas have been taught to use sign language to communicate words and have even been know to form simple sentences, this indicates an ability to utilize sound to its fullest. Many Gorilla people choose professions working with the deaf and are compassionate insightful healers.

So much of this makes total sense, but will need time to digest and study it more. For now, I'll relay what I'm sensing from it and see if you agree.

Horse - Loyal & devoted - yes. Love to travel - yes. Gypsy spirit - often. Forming my own herd - I kinda took over my mom's role as the one keeping the family together. My favorite colors of horse are black and the red/brown ones - those make even more sense to me - I seek truth/enlightenment and often use humor in tense situations. In my dreams with horses (long time since I've seen many animals in my dreams), I was always riding and riding fast.

Raccoon - I enjoy the quiet and peace of the night sky. I try to be aware of my surroundings - so much so that the hubby remarks on how much I notice while I'm driving. I like to crochet and knit. I'm not big on lots of hand washing but I love the water and want to be in it as much as possible. Yes, I tend to wear a mask - more like hiding the real me from the outside world. Whenever I've made changes, I have constantly reminded myself that the results might not be seen for a while. Changes have slow outcomes - in particular it took a month to see any difference when I first started exercising and I was exercising every day.

Cat - I'm definitely an independent thinker and a night person. I bore easily too, but I wouldn't call myself an organizer. I try to be flexible and often distance myself from people. I will try to correlate the timing to what is happening in my life to better understand the message.

Snake - I'm very non-confrontational (often for too long) but will stand up for myself if all other means fail. I like to be warm but really despise being in the sun if it is too bright (very literal but definitely me). I also know I absorb the energies of others and work hard to not let it get to me too much. Definitely a hard shell with a soft interior. I also know there are times when I'm very listless with no energy and have to fight against getting stuck there, but often use the time for reflection and course corrections. My sense of smell is tricky - I can often smell sulfur or chlorine in water - I also have a hard time with perfumes and dog odors. I don't often look at people directly in the eyes because that has gotten me into trouble at times (guys think it's flirting). I am very restless and have what I call nervous energy, finding it difficult to just sit and watch TV or anything like that.

Thanks Ang!

LIFE: HORSE

JOURNEY: RACOON

Raccoon is a distant relative to the bear. The word "raccoon" comes from the Algonquin word "arckunem", which means "hand scratcher", and has to do with their very strong and dexterous paws. They can open just about anything! There are some 6 species of raccoon in North American. Like the raven, raccoon energy can be used for both positive and negative purposes.

The raccoon travels at night. Do you enjoy the quiet peace of the night sky, or do you "get in trouble" when the sun goes down?

It is curious about anything and everything, and will explore its surroundings endlessly. Are you alert and aware of your surroundings, learning from your environment, or do you stick your nose in where it's not wanted or welcome?

The powerful paws say that you have strong and nimble fingers. Are you expert at finger skills?

The raccoon will always seek out water and, while it is known that they wash their food, water also increases the sensitivity in the paws so it can "feel" the food better. Are you a very clean person who likes to have their hands in water?

The most powerful message of the raccoon is the mysterious mask it wears. Mask making is a custom used in cultures the world over as a tool to reach altered states of awareness and spiritual transformation. Do you wear a "mask" to help you become what you really want to be, or do you hide behind the mask?

If you carry raccoon medicine, and are planning changes in your life, expect those changes to take 20 weeks to manifest. For more powerful and effective plans, be patient and look to the long-range outcome. Take it slowly and carefully — raccoon is working.

MESSAGE: CAT

If Cat is your Power Animal, then you have magic and mystery in your life. You are independent and a free thinker. You probably feel energized at night. You will stay with a person or situation until it bores you, and then you're gone. You have a great talent for organizing things.

Cats themselves are quite resourceful and tend to give us messages of change, flexibility of adaptability. Often, when a cat makes an uncommon appearance in our lives it is a message for us to shake up our habitual routines and make some fresh changes in our lives, as well as be more flexible in our thinking.

Cats can also be quite aloof, and this too is often a message for us to distance ourselves from people or situations. Sometimes the best cure for a problem is to step away from it - the cat inherently realizes this, and we would be wise to recognize this need as well.

Lastly, the cat animal symbolism is about mystery. Unfortunately, its unpredictability has given the cat a bad name in some areas of folk lore, specifically witchcraft. When, in actuality, this is an asset that can be harnessed by us humans.

Sometimes displaying very strange behavior and antics, you can never really pin a cat down. Simply put, the cat animal symbolism is synonymous with creativity and psychic power because of its sometimes unorthodox & “mysterious” behavior.

The good news is, this mystery is a message to us that we have the power over illusion. Cat animal symbolism reminds us to not fall prey to false beliefs, to not be a fool out of ignorance and derive understanding from our own internal wisdom. The cat beckons us to realize that when we turn within to our own hearts, minds and souls, and trust in ourselves we will always be shown the truth of matters.

SHADOW: SNAKE

Snakes will avoid humans as long as they are allowed. They will leave the area and go into hiding unless their territory is invaded, or they are cornered or threatened. Then they retaliate with swift and sudden sureness. Does this reflect your own behavior? Do you avoid conflict whenever possible, but stand up and strike back when you are left no other choices?

Since they are cold-blooded, snakes will absorb the environment and climate of their surroundings. They will seek out warmth to survive, but are not overly fond of bright sunshine for this very cold-bloodiness can also "cook" them if exposed to intense heat in the blazing sun for long periods. Do you reflect your surroundings and your environment. Do you blend in with the activities going on around you at any given time? If so, you would be wise to pay attention to your friends, the influences you deal with in your life, and your reactions to them.

Take care to surround yourself with positive and empowering energy that will help you to grow and flourish. Avoid things which are mean, hateful, negative and destructive lest you absorb those ways yourself.

The outer scales of snake are tough, so you may have a tough exterior that you show the world. Are you really a softie under all that toughness? When the skin becomes old and damaged, snake will go into a period of lethargy and inactivity before it emerges with a new and shiny coat. Do you also have periods that are listless, with low energy and no "get up and go". Pay attention and see if these periods come just before new insights and understandings. You're shedding old ways and attitudes.

If you have a keen sense of smell, and a talent for aromatherapy, this could also be snake medicine working. The snake depends upon its sense of smell for its very life.

You may also have very hypnotic eyes, and the power to mesmerize and spellbind people with your gaze. Snake medicine again. You might do well in hypnotherapy, hypnosis, and other skills which carry people into altered states.

Snake medicine can be very difficult to carry. It is always restless, always moving, always seeking new things, always changing, forever in the process of transformation. The periods of stillness and rest are few and far between for snake people. When you feel the need to rest, do nothing, and just vegetate, follow that impulse. You're just storing up energy for your new "skin" before you set out once again on your never-ending journey.

LIFE: EAGLE
Eagles need isolation in the wild to propagate and prosper. This teaches us that we have a singular walk in life and must face life on its terms.

Freedom is vital to the survival of the eagle and this teaches us that all people must be free to choose their own paths; to worship as the Creator leads them; and to respect the freedom of others.

As a lesson in balance and equality, both female and male eagles care for their young.
The Eagle teaches how to master the art of patience and how to move through life without material attachments from their ability to sit for long hours perched on a limb in meditation.

Eagles have excellent hearing and can hunt as much by ear as by sight. To those to whom eagle comes, the ability to hear spiritually and psychically will awaken.

Eagles have sharp beaks and strong jaws that can remove a finger in one snap. The eagle tells us to mind our words and how they affects others; to speak kindly without sharp rancor.

Eagles are renowned for their superior vision, ten times greater than human eyesight. This quality is a gift of vision and clarity that should be used to help others through dark and troubling times.

One who seeks the eagle spirit views situations and other people from a broad perspective for better understanding just as the eagle sees the world from a its great height.

The eagle is a creature of the air, but has strong legs to walk on the earth and often lives near the water for food. These qualities of the eagle teach us to maintain balance in all dimensions to achieve inner-growth. As we soar to spiritual awareness, we remain well grounded in reality as we purify ourselves with the cleansing waters.

The eagle teaches us to have the courage to strive for greater heights of spirituality. The Eagle is seen by American Indians as a connection to the Great Mystery - The Creator of all things.

Eagle people are seen as visionaries, those who are seekers and who are willing to push the limits of self-discovery and personal freedom. When Eagle appears to you it means that you are being put on notice. Eagle totems appear to inspire (push) you to reach higher and become more than you think you are capable of. They tell you to be courageous and really stretch your limits and see what you can do. They bring a sense of courage and a desire to explore and grow.

JOURNEY: DOG

MESSAGE: DRAGONFLY
Dragonflies carry messages that deal with deeper thought - and they ask that we pay attention to our deeper thoughts and desires.

Further symbolic insect meaning of dragonfly comes into play when we observe the dragonfly's mode of transportation as it skitters across the top of water surfaces. This implies that our deeper thoughts are surfacing and we must be mindful of the outcome we wish to have.

The dragonfly is a reminder that when our deeper thoughts rise to the surface we must pay attention - there are lessons to be learned, and we are also reminded that what we think is directly proportionate to what we "see on the surface." ...In short, our thoughts (even the deeper ones that we might not be as in-touch with as we are with our conscious thoughts) are responsible for what we see in our lives - in our physical surroundings.

The dragonfly gives us a very powerful meditation tool. Close your eyes, and focus on a thought - let it rise to the surface of your mind's ocean - see that thought float lightly up to the water's surface. Now upon the top of a smooth, calm glass-like surface - visualize that thought moving across that water - sliding across - smooth and fast.

This exercise is useful when we want to visualize positive outcomes in a situation. We see the thought of hope happily moving across an ocean of peace (peaceful mind) and skitting to a perfect outcome.

Lastly it should be noted that the Dragonfly lives a short life, and it knows it must live to the fullest with what it has. This lesson is huge for each of us. When you see a dragonfly, be aware of the gifts it has to offer by keeping its animal totem meanings in mind.

If Dragonfly has come to you, you may have forgotten to water your plants. On another level, you may need to give thanks to the foods you eat for sustaining your body. On the psychological level, it may be time to break down the illusions you have held that restrict your actions or ideas.

Dragonfly medicine always beckons you to seek out the parts of your habits which you need to change. Have you put on too much weight, or have you started to look like a scarecrow? Have you tended to the changes you have wanted to make in your life? If you feel the need for change, call on Dragonfly to guide you through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation.

Remember that things are never completely as they seem.

Dragonfly teaches us how to balance emotion and mental clarity and control. Dragonfly medicine works in a two year cycle, so if Dragonfly has come into your life you can expect change within this time period. Dragonfly people need to honor their health by spending time outdoors in the sunlight near streams or lakes. Dragonfly also teaches us to see through our own illusions.

This power symbol is especially helpful for those who feel unable to grow spiritually and for those who feel blocked in their creativity. Dragonfly reminds that ordinary physical reality isn't all that available to us. Its rainbow wings remind us that we can live in a world of magic.
People with dragonfly medicine are dreamers. They can be perplexing and annoying to others. The dragonfly person may appear almost schizophrenic as he or she rests (or hovers), absorbing light and energy for a time, and then flits off to a new project. As individuals, dragonflies have lots of nervous energy. Intermittently it is good for them to land and get grounded for a while.

SHADOW: SNAKE
Snakes regularly sheds its outer skin as it grows and a new layer of skin develops. Crawling out of its skin is an important aspect of snake medicine because it symbolizes ways we must move away from old and useless habits and thought patterns as we grow spiritually. It symbolizes death and rebirth.

A snake does not have ears or eardrums but instead has small bones in its head that conduct low frequency vibrations that travel through the earth. Among all creatures of earth, the snake is best equipped to hear the heart-beat, or magnetic resonance of Mother Earth and is therefore able to continually communicate with and be in perfect harmony or balance with Mother Earth.

As a symbol of renewal and transmutation, land snakes do not require food to generate body heat and they lay motionless and soundless against the earth absorbing the heat of the sun and the earth. To those lives to whom the snake slithers into, be aware of its subtle and silent messages. Before this may be possible, it is necessary to become balanced in your path and ground yourself to Mother Earth and all of its elements.

Just before the snake begins to shed its skin, its eyes turn pale blue or opaque giving it a trance-like appearance as if the snake is looking right through you. Snake spirit guides teach ways to look into the hearts of others and find ways to help them along their spiritual paths.
The snake symbolizes regneration and rebirth, intelligence and knowledge, restlessness, and the energy of the consciousness. Snakes shed their skins and have the ability to show us the many layers to our personas.

In some traditions spiritual awakening is represented by the snake/serpent. It rises through the chakras is said to be coiled at the base of the spine like a snake. Snake people are drawn to explore the mysteries of life and will experience many "rebirths" throughout their life, often exploring many different levels of consciousness.

When snake comes to visit you it tells you that knowledge is power and to seek your inner source to conquer fears and renew your spirit. Snakes symbolize restlessness and the desire to seek and explore. Snake encourages you to shed your layers so you can get to the core of your being and access your authentic self in its truest form.

New start to an old thread - Animal Totems - can be animal or insect. Below is a description; the questions follow in the next thread.

Life Long Totem is with you all your life or until you no longer need it. Your Life Totem reflects your spiritual nature.

Journey Totem is with you only for the time it takes for you to walk the particular path that totem is guiding you on.

Message Totem is a spiritual message or a warning – a wake-up call or a slap in the face. The totem is with you for only a brief time. Sometimes the totem can cause a delay in your life so you are not in a certain place at a specific time (in order to avoid an accident) or that you run into someone you are supposed to meet.

Shadow Totems tests us. They share their strengths with us, but not until we prove worthy of them. A Shadow Totem is usually an animal that you are afraid of. Until you get over the fear (like Spiders), their strengths can work against you. Your goal with a Shadow Totem is to learn their lessons and incorporate their strengths into your life. If you continue to be frightened by that animal, then you have not learned its lessons.

Lesson 6: Healing with Your Animal Spirit Guides

In addition to providing guidance, animal spirit guides can help with emotional and physical healing. Following are two amazing true stories of how animal spirit guides were instrumental in helping these individuals with their healing. The first is an emotional healing; the second a physical healing from Leukemia.

The Flight of the Geese

This story, submitted by Scott Renfro, appears in my next book, Earth Magic: Ancient Shamanic Wisdom for Healing Yourself, Others, and the Planet. There are instances when an animal will appear to someone as a messenger from a deceased loved one. Often these are unusual experiences with some type of bird, and for Scott, it happened to be geese as couriers from Goose as a very significant animal spirit guide:

My parents were buried in a cemetery down the road from where I live. One day when I was at my girlfriend Stacey’s house, I decided to get on my bike and trek up to the cemetery to put a small bouquet of spring flowers at the plot. I frequently feel their presence at other times, but especially when I’m near their gravesite. When I entered the property, I asked the spirit of my parents to come to me and help me with some things I’d been wondering about. After carefully cleaning the area and placing the flowers just right—I’m somewhat of a perfectionist—I prayed and gave thanks that I was blessed with having my parents in the earthly realm as long as I did, but I just couldn’t leave things at that. I felt the need to ask my mom to send me a sign that they were with me in spirit.

I know that our deceased loved ones often send us messages through animal visitations, so I’m constantly on the lookout for any and all messages whether directly from loved ones who’ve passed on or from animal spirit guides as messengers from our deceased loved ones. At this time my heart was hurting and my faith was wavering, so I especially felt the need to hear from my parents. I was due to write an article that would be published and had doubts that I could do so.

Almost immediately after I asked my mother to send me a sign that they were with me, a flock of geese flew by on my left side about 100 yards away. I knew from reading Steven Farmer’s book (Animal Spirit Guides) and the work of others that when Goose shows up, it can mean, amongst other possibilities, that I needed to call on my ancestors for help and guidance. It was also a sign that I should be writing creatively.

I was stunned. I felt so blessed that I was able and willing to see this sign for what it was. It all tied in so neatly with what I was struggling with at the time. The messages couldn’t have been clearer, but since I’m a skeptic, I asked my mother to send a goose over my head so that I would “know” that it was she. Kind of picky, eh? I yearned for something unmistakable. For what seemed like the longest time nothing happened, so I got on my bike and started pedaling back to Stacey’s house.

As I pedaled through the cemetery I was in my own little world. Even though I had just received confirmation, I was still having a wobbly moment. In spite of my skepticism, I kept my eyes, heart, and mind open—and I’m so glad I did. Before I reached the gates of the cemetery, I once again heard the loud honking of geese to my right. I stopped the bike, looked to where the sound was coming from, and saw a goose flying directly towards me! I made sure that I didn’t move—which wasn’t too difficult since I was practically paralyzed! The goose flew right over my head, looking directly at me the entire time. Following him was a second goose not far behind, who also flew over my head while looking at me.

Both geese stopped their honking when they got above me, as if to say yes, we were sent to you. I asked for one goose and got two, and each of them had looked directly at me to see if I was watching with “right eyes.” They must have approved, because as soon as they’d passed me, they began their honking again. I received love when I needed it the most from Goose as an emissary of a long gone parent, whom I still miss and love to this very day.

It’s not unusual for animals to come to us that are messengers from a deceased loved one. Usually someone will have an intuitive knowing that the hummingbird, eagle, or dove that appears magically following a beloved one’s death is a sign. One person just wrote that after her father died, and eagle came and roosted on a tree nearby where they were holding the funeral. These are messengers from your deceased loved one, a living, three-dimensional telegram of a spirit animal in physical form that basically says, “Hey, I’m all right and I’m watching out for you!”

Yoshiko and Wolf Spirit

In this instance a young man from Japan who had Leukemia wrote me about a dream, asking for my interpretation of it. Wolf spirit had showed up in this and other dreams, communicating very specific messages to him from the dreamtime Our correspondence extended over several months:

Yoshiko wrote:

I have been fighting with Leukemia since last April. I had completed my treatments and was out of the hospital at the end of July last year. Then I got an infection and was hospitalized last September for a month. I nearly died, but came back. Now, I am hospitalized again because of flu and pneumonia. Whenever I was near death I had some very strange dreams, and in one I met a wolf. This is the first time I saw any animals in my dreams since I got sick. Here’s the dream:

I was in a prairie and met a wolf. He was staring at me. I couldn’t withdraw from his gaze. His eyes were very beautiful. All of a sudden I heard his voice saying, “Come!” and he started walking. At first I didn’t know what to do, then he looked back at me and said, “Come on, follow me,” so I followed him. He took me to a hill, but I quickly realized it was actually a cliff. I could see a beautiful forest and river run through it, and a sunrise as well. It was so beautiful!!! Then the wolf said “Go home. He is waiting for you.” I didn’t know who he was talking about so I asked him, “How can I go home?” He replied, “Jump!” and pushed me from the cliff. I was so scared, and then I noticed I could fly! While I was falling he kept talking, saying, “This is not the place you should be…you have to go home. He is waiting for you.” I asked, “Can I see you again?” He said, “No. not very soon.” Then I woke up.

I had a high fever for over a week but it went down right after the dream, and most of all, I felt great after I had this dream! I had a bad case of the flu and pneumonia and nearly died again, but it was almost completely gone after this dream. Do you think this dream has meaning? Is he my guardian? I am wondering how I should take this dream. If you could interpret for me, it is much appreciated.

I wrote back:

Great dream, and I'm glad you found considerable comfort in it. Yes, Wolf spirit is watching out for you. He will be your guide into the otherworld whenever it's time for that to happen, whether soon or in several years. He is a supreme guardian, very loyal and completely trustworthy. You commented that your flu and pneumonia were relieved after his soul visitation and you felt wonderful which supports the reality of his assisting you.

I'm sorry to hear of your struggle with this disease, and trust that your receiving all the help you need, both physically and spiritually. Call on Wolf spirit any time you get scared or troubled and he will help you.

Two days later Yoshiko wrote:

I finally got out of the hospital two weeks ago. Right after I was out I saw Wolf again. I was so happy to get out of the hospital but I was upset at the same time because I was sick and tired of being sick. It is like good and evil have been battling over me since last year, and evil was eating away at my mind. In my dream, we were in forest. There was a beautiful river, and I was sitting near it. Wolf came over to me and sat down next to me without saying anything. When I looked into his eyes, I felt like he was saying, "You are not alone. I am always with you.” And we sat there for long time. I had been quite upset, but right after I had this dream I felt relaxed and protected.

I have been close to death so many times since last year, but then always some help would come. I had a vision of a man with bright light all around him. He put his hands over my body then up to my head. Then he was gone, and I felt so much better afterwards. I wanted to die many times but I couldn't. I wonder why God gives me this hardship, then helps me??? I have been thinking, “Is there any meaning for me to live???”

I wrote back:

Another dream that's a reminder that Wolf spirit is watching out for you and helping you heal. Please be sure to call on him, as he is so willing to serve you as spirit guardian.

It is difficult to comprehend why there is suffering, whether personal suffering or the suffering of others. It is a fact of our lives that there are times when this is so. I'm not sure there's an adequate explanation for any of it, and in your situation, I can certain understand why you would question these cycles of hardship followed by reassurance. When we're in pain or distress, it's quite natural to lose faith for at least a while and sometimes even curse God.

There's a quote from Richard Bach's book Illlusions. Something like, "Here's a test to see whether your mission on Earth is over yet: If you're alive, it's not."

Many blessings to you in this very challenging task you're dealing with.

A few weeks later Yoshiko wrote:

I know it is not realistic, but I am hoping that everyone in the world will be happy and somehow healed from the pain they might have. I am praying for all my friends every day. I am wishing everyone I met will be happy and healthy. Did I tell you I lost my faith once when I was in hospital? There was a boy who also had leukemia. He was in pretty bad shape but he visited me almost every day to pat my hand and tell me that I would recover. But one day he suddenly stopped visiting me. I knew he was dying. I was also in bad condition at the time such that I could not move. But I put a wig on my head and fake eyebrows (because all my hair was gone) and visited his room. He was dying. When he noticed I was there he smiled. That was the last day I saw him alive. I was praying to God to help us or spare him if he couldn't help both of us. That boy had so much future head of him, but God didn't save him. After that I lost my faith for quite some time.

But now I have found my faith again. I met many people in the hospital and all my friends sent me prayers that I never expected. I thought I was alone but realized I wasn't, and that I could ask my friends for help if I needed and they were more than happy to help me. I am very fortunate. Now I think that I should live for the people who have died from leukemia as well as for myself. They wanted to live, but for whatever reason, they couldn't.

Oh, by the way, Wolf introduced me to his family and they welcomed me. It was as if Wolf was telling me how wonderful it was to make a family and have children. I don't think I will be able to have children, but it was beautiful to see such a nice family. I am like him in that I am very protective with my family and friends, so I felt very comfortable with his family. I wish I could have that kind of bond.

Two months later in the most recent correspondence as of this writing, Yoshiko wrote:

I am doing very well. I am getting stronger both mentally and physical. I am thinking of going back to work!!! I still see my dear wolf a few times a week. Now he is a part of my life. When I tried your meditation CD I see him. He is running around and having fun. But in my dreams he is calm. He encouraged me to move on to next stage, so I decided to go back to work.

Yoshiko wrote again a few weeks later, had returned to work and was doing well.

So these are two very different and powerful examples of how animal spirit guides can assist you with your healing, the first an example of emotional healing; the second, an example of the assisting with the healing of a potentially life-threatening illness. You can call on any spirit animal for this purpose, whether or not the particular spirit animal is your power animal. No matter whether the ailment is relatively minor or major, whether it’s emotional, physical, mental, or spiritual, they will help you.

You can also call on an animal spirit guide to assist with the healing of someone else. You can ask Raven to go to Aunt Jenny in Florida to help with her healing. These are powerful spirit beings and want to help us in any way they can; just express your gratitude in whatever ways you’re prompted to and they’ll keep coming back for more!

Homework

Journal about any experience you’ve had with an animal, domesticated or wild, that brought you healing. The healing may range from something as simple as a sense of peace, calmness, or relaxation, to emotional restoration, or even to a more complex physical illness such as experienced by Yoshiko in the example above.

Animal Spirit Guides
by Dr. Steven Farmer

Lesson 5: Power Animals, Totem Animals, and Animal Spirit Guides

The question that I get a lot is about the differences between power animals, totem animals, and animal spirit guides. So let’s start by clarifying what these different terms mean.

An animal spirit guide or spirit animal is a term applied to any physical animal or symbol of an animal that comes to you with a message that helps guide you in your life path. This may be a one time occurrence, like the grasshopper visitation that I described in the previous lesson. I hadn’t seen a grasshopper for many, many years, but when he did show up, it certainly encouraged me to follow my plan to record my songs. The animal spirit guide may also show up more frequently and with some regularity, such as Hawk does for me. So no matter if it’s a one time occurrence or happens more frequently, if the animal is there to guide, protect, or heal you, it’s an animal spirit guide.

There are two types of specialized animal spirit guides, their designation being drawn from indigenous and shamanic cultures. These are totem animals and power animals. Often these terms are used interchangeably, but there are definite differences in meaning.

The term totem animal has two meanings. First, a totem animal is one that is shared by a family, clan, or group. In many indigenous cultures, the clan or family you were born into all share a relationship with a particular spirit animal that is the group’s totem animal. In modern societies, various groups also have communal totems, such as sports teams or clubs that identify with a totem animal. For instance, the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Orioles, or St. Louis Cardinals, all share a bond with that particular totem whether or not the team or the management is particularly aware of it being a totem animal. Some teams have mascots that are animal figures, and can rightly be called contemporary totems. Then there are the Elks Club or the Loyal Order of Moose, organizations whose members have the particular totem animal in common.

A second meaning of totem animal is a representational object of a particular animal. In totem poles, carved figures of animals are often depicted. In front of my computer are some totems—a turtle and a raven carved from soapstone and an elegant lizard crafted by an artist using various colored fimo clay. Stuffed animals like teddy bears or bunny rabbits that we give our children are totem animals. I’m convinced that a child’s love for their totem and the tendency to relate to them as living beings is a way of invoking the protection of the spirit animal associated with that particular totem. In other words, little Allison loves her teddy bear so much that Bear spirit responds by providing comfort and spiritual protection for her.

Power Animals

The term power animal has its origins in shamanism. This is a specialized animal spirit guide the shaman or shamanic practitioner acquires early in their initiation into their practice. In addition to being available any time night or day, the shaman’s power animal travels with them whenever they go on a shamanic journey. The shamanic journey is a process in which the practitioner goes into an altered state of consciousness and he sends his soul or consciousness into non-ordinary reality to receive teachings, guidance, and healings from his spirit helpers who exist in this realm.

Although in times past a power animal was the domain of the shaman, it’s become apparent that anyone who is drawn to work with animal spirit guides can have a relationship with a power animal. You don’t need to be a shaman or a shamanic practitioner, or even have a strong interest in shamanism. Furthermore, everyone is born with a power animal, however our western cultural values haven’t supported this idea. We’re not taught about spirit animals or power animals and therefore don’t pay them any attention, so after awhile the power animal gets bored and leaves!

The good news is that we can recover our power animal or even discover a new one by opening our hearts, minds, and souls to this notion, Your power animal my come to you in meditations, visions, dreams, or shamanic journeys. You’ll have an opportunity to recover your power animal in the guided meditation journey for this lesson. If you’ve had a particular affinity or attraction for an animal, it’s most likely this is your power animal. Just recently someone wrote and asked what I thought her power animal was. She went on to describe how hawks have shown up for her much of her life, especially in the past few weeks, and was wondering if this could perhaps be her power animal. I wrote back and basically confirmed what she already knew, that Hawk was her main animal spirit guide, or power animal.

This is a highly personal and specialized relationship with an animal spirit guide. It’s not one you choose in the usual sense of the word. It’s more of a soul-to-soul connection, your soul bonding with the soul—or more accurately the oversoul—of the animal. The relationship is one to be nurtured and attended to on a regular basis, and if done, will last a number of years.

Your power animal may leave you at some point, even if you’ve paid attention to her over the years. Usually that means that the relationship has served its purpose, and another power animal either is or will be coming into your life. I’ve observed how these spirit guides will enter into our lives at a time when we most need their particular expression of spiritual power. For instance, if you’re moving into a position of leadership, Cougar spirit may very well leap into your life as power animal, helping you with confidence and clarity in your leadership roles. If you’re going through a major transformative process with big changes, you may find Snake spirit or Butterfly coming into your life as a power animal.

Another interesting facet is that often your power animal is reflective of your personality characteristics. For instance, Rachel is slight of build, energetic, with a tendency to move very quickly, often juggling several tasks at once, flitting from one to the other. It’s no accident that her power animal turned out to be Hummingbird. Gary is a fairly large man, gentle by nature, yet very capable of standing up for himself or for others as needed. No one messes with him. No surprise that his power animal is Bear.

As for myself, I recently acquired Raven as power animal—or perhaps I should say he recently acquired me! Well actually, we acquired one another through our soul connection and am at a point in my Earthwalk where he is perfect for me. In addition over the years I’ve developed relationships with three other power animals, each one for different purposes. I don’t typically reveal who they are publicly as these are such highly personal and intimate relationships. Raven is the exception as in a conversation he gave me permission to talk about him as my power animal since I teach and write about these things. As for some of his characteristics, Raven tends to value his solitude, is a shapeshifter, and a powerful manifester. He has a number of different calls or songs to communicate a variety of things, and if necessary he can be loud. Raven reflects a lot of my characteristics—or should I say I reflect a lot of his!

Other questions that come up are about cats or dogs being power animals. Generally domesticated animals can’t be power animals because they’ve lost much of their wildness and are removed from the natural world. Likewise, some traditions believe that insects are to be excluded from being power animals because of their size and nature. Generally true, however in my book Power Animals, Dragonfly and Butterfly both argued vehemently about being included, so I caved and included them. I see now the wisdom of that, as they both offer unique types of power.

Yet another question that comes up on occasion is about mythological or etheric animals, such as dragons or unicorns. Although some would insist that they exist in third dimensional reality, it really doesn’t matter whether they do or not. If you believe they do, then they do. Any of these so-called mythological animals can certainly be your power animal. The only disadvantage is that they’re not commonly seen in the physical world as are other kinds of animals.

Honoring Your Power Animal

Just like other spirit beings and physical beings, they need attention. It can come as simply meditating and calling on them for a visit, as you would an old friend. Check in with them every so often as when you maintain consistency in doing so, they feel appreciated and it strengthens the bond between the two of you. Here’s some other ways to show them your appreciation.

Dance your power animal—You can do this while you’re drumming or rattling, you an put on a drumming track on your iPod or MP3, or play any music that feels appropriate for this. To start this, close your eyes and invite your power animal to merge with you. Merging doesn’t mean possession, but simply sharing the experience of being in a physical body—yours—for a period of time. You can actually feel when your power animal merges with you. Once they do, let them determine the movements to the dance in cooperation with you. Lose your inhibitions and let go to the dance. You may also find that the sound your power animal makes will come through your voice. The more often you do this, the easier it gets, and your power animal will truly feel honored and cherished when you do.

Find Your Power Animal Song—For this one, it’s best to go to a quiet place in Nature and find a comfortable place to sit. Ask your power animal to come with you and when you get settled in, be aware of sights, sounds, and feelings around you. Take a few slow, deep breaths, close your eyes, and ask your power animal to teach you a song. Be patient and trust whatever comes. You may first get a melody of some sort, then words. The words if they do come to you might be in your native language or may be a structure of sounds or syllables that doesn’t make complete sense to you. It doesn’t matter; just trust what you get.

Give back—No matter what else you do, consider ways to give back something to the animals that live in the physical world. Doesn’t have to be only the animal that is represented by your power animal. It can be any animal or animals that you’re fond of or are drawn to. For example, you can volunteer at your local animal shelter. You can pick up trash in the ocean or on the beach. You can donate to any of the reputable organizations that work on behalf of the animal kingdom, such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), OCEANA, which is dedicated to cleaning up the oceans, or Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), which has become an increasingly stronger advocate for our brother and sister animals. These are but a few, and I’m sure that you will come across others that you feel drawn to.

Homework

Two choices: Either dance your power animal or find your power animal song as described above. If you’re not sure still which one is your power animal, choose an animal spirit guide that you’re drawn to and then do one or both of the assignments.

Blessings & Love, Jetta :-)

Lesson 4: Interpreting the Messages from Animal Spirit Guides

Animal spirit guides will teach you in both cryptic and dream-like ways and also offer their counsel by hitting you right between the eyes with a message that’s obvious. I personally like it best when the message is clear and straightforward, like the message from Hummingbird that showed up via the hummingbird flitting amongst the geraniums when I was feeling overwhelmed with works in progress, or the message from the little field mouse that showed up telling me to look more closely at the details. When you have an experience like this and find yourself uncertain of what the message might be, one of the most useful and direct ways is to communicate with the spirit of that animal that you’ve sighted and ask them. The first thing to do (unless you’re driving) is to close your eyes, imagine that animal’s spirit in front of you, and in your mind ask the question, “What do you want me to know?” Take a deep breath, relax your body, and see what sort of impressions and information you get, whether visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or cognitive. Often you’ll get a “hit” on what the meaning of the visitation is.

In other instances you may experience such an unusual visitation or sighting whose meaning isn’t immediate clear that you find yourself contemplating it throughout the day and into the next. This often happens with vivid dreams of animals. If that’s the case, simply let it “work” you and you’ll likely discover further insights and messages, sometimes through signs and omens that appear to you that are related to the visitation or the dream.

Yet another means of interpreting the message is to consider the characteristics of the animal, such as their behavior, their demeanor, or their personalities, as metaphor. For instance, dolphins work cooperatively with each other, communicate verbally, non-verbally, and telepathically, which can suggest what their message is for you. Wolves are very clannish, alert, protective of one another, and strongly associated with wildness. If you’re not sure about the animal’s characteristics, you can research it by doing a search on the Internet.

My books Animal Spirit Guides and Power Animals, as well as others, can serve as a useful bridge to discerning and interpreting the message from the animal spirit guide. Also, as I noted in the following story, the Internet can prove to be a useful tool toward this end.

Whichever of these ways or combinations your use, the more you practice deciphering the messages, the easier it becomes. Following are a couple of examples of how I received very specific guidance from two animal brothers.

THE GRASSHOPPER

One of many experiences with animal spirit guides that I’ve had took place a few months ago. I play guitar and sing and have done so most of my life. I’d written several songs over the previous two years, had played them for my family and friends and in a couple of coffee houses and got a very positive response. Everyone encouraged me to get them recorded. I knew I needed to go to a professional recording studio to get the quality I wanted, so I made an appointment with one that had been recommended. Since I hadn’t been in a recording studio for years, I was nervous about it, but in spit of my trepidation, I was prepared to follow through with it.

So I’m sitting in my office the afternoon before the next day’s appointment at the recording studio, enjoying the fair weather and the slight breeze coming in from the open sliding glass doors, feeling a mixture of nervousness and excitement, organizing my songs in preparation for recording them. The critical voice of the ego kept popping in and out, saying such things as “What do you think you’re doing? Who do you think you are?” as if warning me, like an internal Robby the Robot in the old series, “Lost In Space,” saying, “Danger, Will Robbins!” I seriously considered canceling the appointment, thinking I would just postpone it, reschedule another day. In other words, put it off.

As I’m contemplating all this, a huge grasshopper jumps from the outside and lands squarely just to the right of my computer. Now I haven’t seen any grasshoppers for years, and here was one plopped down right by me! As I stared at this . . .this being for a few moments, I thought to myself, “Okay, Mr. Spirit Animal guy, what does ‘Grasshopper’ mean?” When I asked, I heard in my mind, “Take the leap!” Okay, a fairly obvious metaphor, but I wanted more. So I first looked in my book, Animal Spirit Guides, but lo and behold! Nothing about Grasshopper! So I set about doing some research.

I jumped onto the Internet, did a search for “Grasshopper/Totem,” and came across the website http://www.sayahda.com/cyc2.html. Amongst other possible meanings this article suggested, the piece that jumped out at me (no pun intended) was this: One of the gifts these insects hold is the power of song and sound. Song is an ancient way to alter consciousness and communicate with our animal and spirit relations.

I got chills up and down my spine as I read this, which is my body’s way of telling me that there is a spiritual truth that is happening. Now for sure I couldn’t back out of going to the recording studio even if I wanted to! I’m happy to report that I did get to the studio and recorded five basic tracks of my original songs, and was very pleased with the results.

THE HAWK

In another instance one morning a couple of years ago I had just awakened and was lying in bed thinking about the day ahead, when out of the corner of my eye I caught a flurry of wings. All the birds that had been feeding outside my bedroom window had quickly scattered. Since I often left birdseed there it’s not unusual to see doves and a smattering of other birds on our deck and in the tree just outside. Obviously something had alarmed them, so I was naturally curious as to what had caused all the ruckus. Glancing to the tree outside, I noticed perched on one of the branches a few feet away a magnificent red-tailed hawk, solemnly gazing about as if he were surveying his kingdom. His demeanor was one of supreme confidence and poise, as if awaiting some instinctual signal for his next move.

It had been several months since I’d last seen this hawk, and since Hawk for a number of years has been a consistently profound and accurate messenger and spirit guide, I asked Hawk Spirit the meaning of this visitation. What I heard in my head was, “Stay focused and don’t get distracted. Keep things in perspective.” Straightforward and simple. Not cryptic or abstract at all. As I mentioned, that’s the way I prefer my messages from Spirit—whoever is the messenger—and Hawk has always proved to be a trustworthy teacher and guide.

Given that at the time I was working on one of my books and the manuscript was due in just a few weeks, I very much appreciated this strong advice from Hawk. It takes discipline to write, and I confess that sometimes it’s easy to get distracted with any number of other seemingly important things such as reorganizing my office, e-mail, or computer games (which I’d highly recommend if you ever want pointless diversions from accomplishing your task at hand!).

So heeding his wise counsel, that morning I sat down at my computer and enthusiastically and diligently began writing, appreciative of my friend’s visit that morning. My attention span lasted about thirty minutes, at which point I decided to check my e-mail. When I clicked the button to access my e-mail account, however, nothing happened. The Internet wasn’t working! Suddenly I panicked, feeling as if this was a crisis of immense proportions. I called our webmaster, but he wasn’t available for the next few hours, so I proceeded to spend the next three hours on the phone with the Internet company and Apple computer, trying this and that with no success, growing increasingly frustrated, doing a lot of muttering and clenching of my fists and my gut. That morning following Hawk’s gentle reminder I’d set an intention to get ten pages done, and now this incredibly urgent matter had come up to delay my progress!

Just when I felt like throwing things our webmaster appeared and after a few minutes of performing his computer wizardry, the Internet was up and running again. Of course, I immediately went online to check my e-mail. Since it was a Sunday there was barely any at all, except a letter from a guy in Nigeria who wanted me to help him out by transferring several million dollars into my account for which I’d get a percentage.

I tried to remember why it had been such a critical matter to check my e-mail in the first place but I couldn’t. Whatever had been my reason at the time, it was lost to what had seemed to be a matter of grave importance—getting the Internet working again. Then in my head I heard Hawk’s message again: “Stay focused and don’t get distracted. Keep things in perspective.”

It was a moment similar to one Homer Simpson slaps himself in the head and says, “Doh!” I laughed out loud at my follies. I had completely forgotten about Hawk’s beautiful and purposeful message and created an entire drama around a very minor dilemma! The Internet could have easily waited but instead became a convenient diversion from my writing. Oh, well—joke’s on me. Maybe Coyote was around, working his medicine.

So I dumped my computer games, put e-mail at the bottom of the list, and industriously and productively wrote for the rest of that day and every day for the next week. A few days later guess who appeared once again in the that same tree outside the bedroom window? You got it—that same hawk. A gentle reminder from Hawk spirit—stay focused, don’t get distracted, and keep writing!

As if that weren’t enough, about two weeks later on a warm Southern California day, I was at my desk plunking away on the computer, when out of the blue I hear a loud commotion between the front of my desk and the sliding glass door that leads to the back yard. Startled, I looked up and saw what appeared to be wings furiously flapping away. I got up, walked around my desk and sure enough, there was that same hawk I’d seen before, flailing away at the glass with his wings and talons, trying to make a quick exit. I spoke calmly to him, as he was obviously quite terrified. I said to myself out loud, tongue in cheek, “I wonder if this means something.” After a couple of minutes, I opened the sliding glass door and the hawk immediately flew away.

Once I did that I turned and spotted a dove tucked away between the desk and the printer. She of course exited very quickly as soon as there was an opportunity. The hawk had been after the dove and both had flown in through the open sliding glass door at the front of the house, down the hallway, and into my office. They both came to a screeching halt from hitting the sliding glass door that was closed. So just in case I’d missed the meaning of the first two, Hawk spirit in this third visit provided a dramatic exclamation point for the previous messages. This reminder further encouraged me to stay on track with my writing.

Once all this activity settled down, I thought about what had just happened, just as I’ve suggested you do if either you’re not sure of the message or just as in this case, if you want to understand any further meaning. What I got was that Hawk was telling me to pursue the goal of completing the writing project with relentless focus and diligence, no matter what happens—just as he had pursued the dove. As I considered the meaning of the dove’s role in this and the message from Dove Spirit, I got the hit that there will be a happy outcome. Not only that, but Dove was telling me to remain as peaceful and calm throughout the process, in spite of any disruptions or disturbances.

Listen to the following meditation about messages from an animal spirit guide.

Homework

Write in your journal first about your experience of the mediation. Then consider a recent experience where you had a significant sighting or visitation from an animal spirit guide. Consider the various characteristics of the animal and what that may mean for you in terms of a message. Then close your eyes for a few moments, call in the spirit animal and ask them any other messages. Just like in the meditation, once you’ve asked, watch, listen, and pay attention to your feelings and your thoughts to see what the message might be.

Lesson 3: Messages from Your Animal Spirit Guides

If you talk with the animals they will talk with you, and you will know each other. If you do not talk to them, you will not know them, and what you do not know, you will fear. What one fears one destroys. —Chief Dan George

So first let’s consider communicating with the actual animal, then move to communicating with the spirit of the animal. To communicate with animals or even spirit animals requires a different way of thinking about communication. It’s actually more about listening—listening with your eyes, ears, mind, and senses, and being open to receiving what they’re trying to convey to us through their physical being—or their spirit.

One of my favorite stories about this comes from Kinship with All Life by J. Allen Boone. In it he describes his journey of discovery about how animals communicate. His curiosity began when he was hired to take care of Strongheart, a dog who was a movie star of the time. He noticed different instances where Strongheart seemed to be trying to tell him something, but he wasn’t sure how to interpret what he was communicating. So he sought out an old friend of his, Mojave Dan, a fellow who lived in the desert that had a unique gift of communicating with animals.

He is known as a desert rat. The only name he has had for many years is Mojave Dan, but that is all he ever needs. He loves the desert, and it is constantly revealing to him its deepest secrets.

I very much wanted to get in touch with him because up to that time he was the only human I had ever personally known who could carry on silent two-way conversations with animals and really share ideas with them…. The real mystery was not so much Dan’s ability silently to communicate his thoughts to the animal but his capacity to understand when the animal spoke to him.

He is a strict observer of the ancient desert rule that if you cannot improve on the desert silence then you should keep your mouth shut.

But I thought there was some excuse for a certain amount talking on this occasion; I had a major problem in human-animal relationships and had come a long distance to ask Dan’s advice. I told him how Strongheart and I happened to be living together; I told him of the difficulty I was having in getting at the real truth about the big dog; and I asked him what he thought I should do next.

There was no response at all from Dan. Just the desert silence. A silence so intense that it was rather disturbing to my city-sound-accustomed ears. Patient I waited . . . and waited . . . and waited. But not a sound or a movement did my friend make. One of two things seemed to have happened: either what I had said did not much interest him, or he had gone to sleep.

Much more time elapsed. Finally Dan yawned and stretched. Then he spoke, aiming his words at the stars. “There’s facts about dogs,” he said, “and there’s opinions about them. The dogs have the facts, and the humans have the opinions. If you want facts about a dog, always get them straight from the dog. If you want opinions, get them from the human.

A real expert on human-animal relationships had spoken. Having done so, he rolled over on his side and this time definitely went to sleep. Animal Spirit Guides and Messages

Similarly with spirit animals, to paraphrase Mojave Dan, if you want facts about a spirit animal, always get them from the spirit animal. In many instances it’s not only the specific animal that is communicating, but as I stated previously, the spirit of the entire species, or the oversoul, of that animal, which is attempting to convey a message to you. In other words, the animal is a physical representative of the entire species. Say a hummingbird flutters in front of you for a few seconds about two feet from your nose—and unusual appearance. This little being is a representative of the spirit of all hummingbirds and is trying to tell you something—perhaps to lighten up, to taste the sweet nectar of life, or to be more flexible.

Like Mojave Dan said, best way is to get the facts directly, in this case from the oversoul (which I’ll also refer to as the spirit animal or animal spirit guide) of the hummingbird. I’ll offer some suggestions later on as to how you can do so. In the meantime, there are books, such as my book Animal Spirit Guides and others, as well as the vast resources of the Internet, to give you some clues as to the meaning and the message. These resources can serve as a bridge to understanding more directly what the spirit animal is trying to tell you.

When the spirit of the animal is trying to reach you, they’ll do so in a couple of different ways. Either they’ll show up in an unusual way—as in the example of the hummingbird fluttering in front of you—or repeatedly over a short period of time. These appearances may be of the actual animal or else a symbol or other representation of that animal. For example, a soapstone carving of a wolf, the sound of an owl hooting one evening, or a show about bears on television are all examples of ways animals can show up as symbols, whether visual or auditory. An example of a repetitive symbolic representation would be when you have a vivid and colorful dream about a bear, go to the market the next day and overhear hear two strangers in a conversation talking about bears, and that evening turn on the television and there just happens to be a program about bears. Since most of us who live in urban areas will never actually encounter live bears or come close to a number of wild animals, the spirit of that animal has to reach us some other way to get a message across.

Also, when you’re referring in print to the spirit of the animal it’s capitalized. This is to differentiate it from the actual animal. Similarly, when speaking, saying simply “Owl,” with no “a,” “and,” or “the” in front implies that you’re talking about the spirit animal.

Perceiving the Message

Whenever you think that an animal spirit guide is offering a message, the simplest thing to do is close your eyes and ask the spirit of that animal what the message is. Once you do, pay attention to everything that happens after you’ve asked. You may get visual impressions, or hear a voice in your head, feel something strongly, or else get a thought that pops into your head. These are the four major avenues of perceiving spiritual information—visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and cognitive. The information can come in any one or a combination of these sensory inputs.

As your receptivity to the spiritual dimension opens and develops, you’ll discover that one of these pathways is the strongest and feels the most natural, with a secondary one that works fairly well. The more you practice and the more you attune to the spiritual dimension, you’ll find you can receive input through the other channels as well. What’s required is that you hold a clear intention to receive these messages and simply remain receptive, and they will come to you, often in unexpected and surprising ways.

Here’s some examples of how these four modalities can show up:

Visual—When you see that dolphin a few yards from shore or the crow that lands a couple of feet away from you and you know these are unusual visitations and meant for you, this is the animal spirit coming through a visual channel. You may also see spirit animals in the non-physical realm in your mind’s eye, such as having a vision of a bear or a mythological animal like a dragon, or you may have a vivid dream about a wolf. Seeing images of animals on clothing, posters, or in the movies are other ways they show up in our visual field, as well as the images of animals and the written messages on oracle cards.

Auditory—You hear the sound of an animal, such as an owl “Hoo-hoo—ing” or a Coyote’s howl. Another might be the voice of an animal spirit guide in your mind giving you some advice (messages that come this way are typically short and to the point). A particular sound in the environment may trigger a thought about an animal spirit guide. You may overhear a conversation or listen to someone talking and intuitively know that what is being said is a message from a spirit animal.

Kinesthetic—This is when you feel or sense something, sometimes called a gut feeling or intuition. You feel or sense the presence of the ethereal form of one of your more common animal spirit guides or your power animal, and get a sense of what they’re trying to communicate to you. A sensation passes through your body and you immediately know the feeling is associated with an animal spirit guide. Sometimes without being consciously aware I’ll find my spine is swaying much like a snake traveling across land and I’ll know that Snake spirit is present.

Cognitive—This is a knowing through our thought processes, also called inspiration or insight. Often those who are more analytical find they get messages this way. If your primary mode of input is through this pathway, your animal spirit guide is communicating with you by triggering a thought or thought pattern. Often you don’t know exactly how you know and if asked, you just say something like, “I just know.”

So to emphasize, when an animal or a symbol of that animal shows up to you in an unusual way or repeatedly (at least three times in a short period of time) they’re most definitely trying to convey a message from the spirit world to you.

For instance, Tim and his wife Beth provide an illustration of how this can work. Less than a year ago they were preparing a major move to a new city and Tim was feeling extremely anxious about the move to the point of losing sleep and dropping weight. One night a raccoon showed up in the back yard, which was very unusual and to Tim, was significant. He looked up the message from Raccoon in my book, Power Animals, discovered that the message was about resourcefulness. He realized that Raccoon spirit was telling him that he did in fact have all the necessary resources, both internal and external, for this move. It relaxed him a great deal and he and his wife are now living very successfully in their new home in a new city.

Homework

Over the next several days pay close attention to how you perceive the world. Once you’ve listened to the meditation you should have a better idea of what are your two foremost channels of perception. Continue to notice which of these channels is stronger. Make sure you jot down your observations in your journal and any other thoughts related to this.

Animal Spirit Guides
by Dr. Steven Farmer
Lesson 2: Animals, Spirit Guides, and the Spirit World

It’s amazing how animals permeate our consciousness and are with us all the time. They show up in their physical form such as in the stories I related in the first lesson, the ones about the hummingbird that was blessing the flowers just outside my door, Elephant and Beaver from the oracle cards encouraging me to go scuba diving, and the crows that confirmed my friend’s advice about waiting to talk with my publisher face to face about my next project. They can also appear in symbolic form. We see symbols or images of animals everywhere, such as the intertwined snakes of the caduceus, the animals that frequent the movies and television shows, or the totemic carvings of animals that can be seen in some stores.

We have an intimate connection with the animal kingdom even though we may not always recognize it. Whether you live in an urban, suburban, or rural area, short of being locked in a room 24/7, you’re bound to see at least a few animals throughout the day. You may not even notice their presence, but they are there. And the gifts that our animal brothers and sisters give us abound, from companionship to clothing, and if you’re an omnivore, the bacon and eggs you had for breakfast.

Go into any number of stores and you’ll see animal icons in pictures, jewelry, and fabric. Often sports teams are named after animals—Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Baltimore Orioles—as well as various organizations such as the Lion’s club or the Loyal Order of Moose. Fairy tales are rampant with animals, ones that communicate readily with each other and with the humans in the stories. In our everyday language animal metaphors abound. The stock market is either a bull or a bear market; someone is busy as a beaver, or tries to weasel their way out of things. You may be trying to outfox someone, but because your idea sounds fishy, they probably think you’re just horsing around and trying to get their goat, so once they find you out, you’ll have to eat crow.

You get the picture.

Even we humans are basically animals with a fairly refined self-awareness and supposedly a superior intelligence (although given the state of the planet and our relationship with it, that’s debatable!). Our bodies are basically monkey bodies and like other mammals, we eat, sleep, eliminate, and procreate in basically the same ways. We breathe the same air and live together on the same planet, whether on land, in the air, or in the waters. And just like every other being we eventually die, the substance of our bodies returning to the earth for recycling while our spirit moves into the world of formlessness.

Disconnection from the Animals

Malidoma Patrice Somé is a healer, teacher, and elder of the Dagara peoples in the small West African nation of Burkina Faso in West Africa. He travels extensively giving classes and workshops, and in one of his teachings, he describes how the Dagara believe there are three levels of intelligence on Earth. Plants are considered to be the most intelligent beings, animals second, while humans capture the ribbon for third place. It’s a different way of looking at life and our relationship with plants and animals, one that contradicts the more typical and subtle arrogance ingrained within many of us in the more “civilized” societies.

Whether we agree that we’re somehow less intelligent than plants or animals, most indigenous peoples, who are more intimately connected to the natural world, know that we are intrinsically related to all life on this fair planet. Chief Seattle, of the Suqwamish and Duwamish tribes of British Columbia was purported to have said: “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.”

So how is it that those of us who have been raised in the more “civilized” parts of the world have forgotten this connection? How did we forget how to talk with the animals, to listen to their language, to connect with their spirit, and to show them compassion and gratitude for all they give us? How did we come to live in this illusion that we’re somehow separate from all other beings and nature herself?

Of course there’s no single cause for this dissociation from the natural world and specifically from animals, yet we can point to a couple of powerful influences. One of these was the beginning of the scientific revolution, heralded by Sir Francis Bacon in the early 16th century. Considered the founder of modern science, Bacon claimed that goal seeking was a specifically human activity, and attributing goals to nature misrepresents it as human-like. It became science’s job to objectify nature, and to think otherwise became a cardinal sin. Then in 1637, along came Descartes, famous for his quote, “I think, therefore I am” (although it’s more accurate to say, “I am, therefore I think!”). Descartes maintained that only humans have souls, so animals can’t really feel pain, and thus pioneered the practice of vivisection, further objectifying the animal world. This was reflective of a prevailing attitude of objectification of the entire natural world.

In the 20th century many others would openly disagree with this way of thinking. Darwin was one who challenged this view and demonstrated that animals had their own unique intelligence. Yet paradoxically, in the past century and even to today, animals have continued to be treated like objects, as having no soul or spirit, here mainly to serve humankind’s needs and purposes.

Yet these attitudes are slowly changing. With the activism by such groups as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Defenders of Wildlife, National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Humane Society of the US (HSUS), and OCEANA to name but a few, animals, both domesticated and wild, are increasingly being regarded with greater respect and afforded the dignity that they deserve. In California, an initiative passed that was on the November ballot. This is the first of its kind—an anti-cruelty measure that will end the inhumane confinement of 20 million farm animals in tiny crates and cages where they can barely move for their entire lives.

These kinds of efforts are indicative of the spark of ancient memory that’s awakening in many of us. There’s a heartfelt longing to experience the intimacy with the natural world that was a way of life for our ancestors, who expressed their gratitude for the gifts of the earth through continuous prayer, ceremony, and ritual. They appreciated that whatever you took from nature, you always gave something back, and you used every part of what you’ve taken. They knew that every aspect of life was infused with Spirit and consistently honored that fact, and carried ancient wisdom that has been forgotten, yet one that we’re thankfully remembering. For those ancestors, animals were seen as kin, as brothers and sisters, and even when hunted for sustenance, they were honored and treated with the utmost respect and gratitude for the act of sacrificing their lives so the human community could carry on.

Not only was everything seen as being infused with spirit, but all aspects of life on the planet were viewed as being a particular articulation and expression of Great Spirit/Source/God. Each animal in turn was naturally seen as containing that spirit in its unique manifestation. The crow that’s sitting on your balcony is a physical crow animated by spirit, also called Life Force. Furthermore whenever any animal appears to you in an unusual way or repeatedly, the spirit or oversoul of the entire species is attempting to communicate a message to you. For instance, the spirit of the entire species called “crow” has sent a representative to pass along a particular message. Or the fox that runs across your trail as you’re on a hike is most likely attempting to communicate something from the spirit or oversoul of all foxes.

Spirit World and Spirit Guides

Okay, so what exactly is the spirit world? It’s another dimension that exists alongside our material reality, one that’s populated with non-physical beings. Our awareness and imagination are the vehicles that allow us to communicate with those beings that exist there. Yes, imagination. Imagination doesn’t just exist in your head. As Jeanne Achterberg, author of Imagery and Healing proposes, imagination extends into the field around us and offers an incredible creative power to tap into.

So in this alternate non-physical reality, amongst other beings there are ancestors, ascended masters, archangels—and of course spirit animals. Physical matter is denser and more tangible to our usual senses, whereas accessing the spirits that exist in this alternate reality requires heightened awareness and openness to their existence on this different plane.

The term spirit guide, also known as a spirit helper or guardian spirit, is a term for any of these spiritual beings that help us in a life-positive way. You can call on them for guidance, protection, healing, and inspiration. Some have been with us since childhood, while others have appeared at various periods in our life, perhaps to help us through a difficult transition. We may see them, hear them, feel them, or just know they’re with us, and we can have any number of spirit guides throughout our life whether we’re aware of them or not. Their intention is to help us have a more peaceful, harmonious, and happier life. They are happy to serve and willingly do so whenever called.

What we refer to as Great Spirit, Source, or God, is the ultimate “stuff” that encompasses all and from which everything emanates. Source is difficult for most of us to relate to other than when you have an experience of your complete being-ness, the place of pure awareness—those moments when you’re completely immersed in the non-duality and totality of Life. Then a few minutes later you have to go and take out the trash or write out bills, plunking your attention squarely back into ordinary reality.

Fortunately, because Source/God is so conceptually abstract, these various manifestations of Source are in the world that are more tangible and accessible, sometimes visible and sometimes in their etheric form. And some of these tangible representatives are in the form of animals, both in their physical and symbolic forms, in an attempt to communicate with us. Not in the way we ordinarily think of, but reaching out from their soul to yours. The art of discerning how to understand those messages is the subject of our next lesson.

Homework
~~~~~~~~
Think back on the dominant attitudes about animals you learned from your family and friends when growing up. What about your relationship with both pets and other animals that were in your environment when you were a child? Were there certain animals you liked more than others? Which ones? Any that you had a particular affinity for more than others? Any idea at the time that there were spirit animals you could call on and work with? Or was that notion completely foreign? Have you had experiences with an animal spirit guide, one that showed up at a particular time and you “got” the message? Write your thoughts about these in your journal.
Animal Spirit Guides
Lesson 1: The Magic of Animal Spirit Guides
As I sit at my desk, feeling a bit overwhelmed with the tasks before me, various papers scattered about like leaves under a tree that foretell the passing of summer, I notice something out of the corner of my eye. I turn and see the tiniest and one of the busiest of creatures flitting about amongst the red geraniums in the planters on the deck just a few feet away. It’s a hummingbird, busy with the day’s work of collecting nectar from the flowers, one of its sources of food.
A smile automatically spreads across my face—I can’t help it. And I suspect anyone who would come across this remarkable being and take a moment to witness her tiny elegance and guileless charms would succumb to her joyful dance as I did. Her movements are captivating. They’re so quick and agile. One moment she’s in one spot and the next she’s somehow appeared a few inches to the left.
In another instance a couple of years ago Doreen had one a few dives and subsequently became quite an avid scuba diver. I had done four dives prior to this and with each one I’d encountered some problems due to my lack of experience, the most serious being a bruised ear drum from too rapid pressure changes as a result of bouncing up and down at different depths so rapidly that the pressure on my ear drum didn’t have time to adjust. It was a minor problem but this along with other difficulties I’d encountered didn’t exactly sell me on the idea of diving more.
We were preparing to go on vacation in Kona, Hawaii, and Doreen planned a diving trip while we were there with another couple who were also avid divers. I felt the tug to go with them but since I didn’t have great experiences in my first four dives, I was reluctant to sign on. As I’m considering these conflicting thoughts and feelings, I turned and saw sitting there on the desk my Power Animal Oracle Cards, which had arrived only two days earlier. The thought hit me: Why don’t I just check out what they have to say? I had only tested them out by doing readings with a couple of friends and they had been surprisingly accurate, so why not ask the question about scuba diving
I got still, silently asked the question, inquiring as to whether any of these spirit animals represented in the cards had some advice about scuba diving for me. I then pulled a card. Since they were new, another card stuck to the one I’d pulled, which meant that both cards were part of the reading. I took a deep breath, hoping to find Turtle on the other side telling me to retreat. Instead, there was the statement at the bottom of Elephant, “You will overcome any obstacles.” Hmm. Okay. Now for the next. As I peeled the Elephant card from the other, the words at the bottom jumped out at me: “Just do it!” Beaver had spoken. Although appreciative of such straightforward and direct advice from these cards that the animal spirits and I had co-created, I was in a bit of shock. I knew that I had to go scuba diving and confront my trepidation. The good news is that I did so and actually for the first time enjoyed it, and I’m not sure I would have without the counsel from the spirit guides.
Another time about three years ago I was having lunch outdoors with a friend, Edward, telling him that I was going to write my publisher and let him know the subject of my next book. I was excited about the proposal and thought that e-mailing him would give him time to think about it. Edward commented that it would be better to pitch it to him in person and reminded me that I had said I’d be meeting with him in a couple of weeks, so why not pitch it to him then? At first I resisted the idea because of my enthusiasm for the project (as well as a dose of willfulness), even though my friend was an experienced author and has been in the business much longer than I have.
Immediately following his comment a crow flew by a few feet in front of us. As I shared my reluctance to wait, Edward gently reiterated his opinion, and once again, another crow caught my attention, this one strutting along—as only crows can do—just a few feet to our right. Edward then said, “Do you need a third sign?” at which point I turned my head away slightly just in time to observe yet a third crow swooping skyward, adding an exclamation point from Crow spirit to his suggestion. “Okay,” I muttered, “I surrender. I’ll wait.”
Message Delivery Service
So what about these stories makes them so unique? What do they have in common? From one perspective, they’re just interesting stories about my experiences with these three visitors from the animal kingdom. From a rational point of view there’s not much else to them.
Yet what’s compelling about these stories is that I knew each of these animals was delivering a message from Spirit for me. It wasn’t only the physical animals themselves that were communicating something to me. Instead the collective spirit of each of these species was attempting to deliver a message. In other words, it wasn’t just the hummingbird, elephant, beaver, or crows that were showing up in a way that connected so strongly with me, but in addition each particular animal was showing up as a representative of their entire species. Specifically, the spirit or essence of their particular species, which can also be referred to as the oversoul of that species.
So on one hand, the hummingbird was just being . . . well, a hummingbird. But the fact that I turned to see her at just the right time, that her presence lifted my spirits and made it so I couldn’t help but smile, suggested that something more was going on. The spirit of this tiny but powerful being connected directly with my soul, even before I could articulate what was being communicated. Once I got the connection, not only did I perceive the physical hummingbird dancing amongst the geraniums, but also the presence of Hummingbird, capitalized without an article before it (such as “a,” “the,” or “an”) that when written or said this way, implies the presence of the spirit animal.
Magic and Meaning
This world is magical in this way and is always communicating with us, particularly through the animals. Those of us in the western world have been raised with cultural values that have taught us to see the natural world as outside and disconnected from us, with its main purpose being to supply our own human needs. Unlike those in indigenous and ancient cultures that have existed much closer to Nature, we tend to view the world with eyes trained in the illusion of objectivity, that we’re somehow separated from it all. Since our long ago ancestors had to rely on Earth Mother to provide their basic survival needs, they learned out of necessity to communicate with the other beings on this planet and how to discern the meanings and messages from these other beings. Of course many of these other beings were the animals.
Fortunately we’re seeing a resurgence and revival of some of these old ways and realizing that indigenous peoples and our long ago ancestors knew something about the natural world that had been lost to us. We’ve suffered from a severe case of cultural amnesia, of dreaming a false dream, of being forgetful of our intimate and intertwined relationship with the Earth and all of Her children. One manifestation of our awakening is how many of us are renewing and revising our relationship with the animals and opening ourselves to their guidance and teachings. The spirit of the animals wants to help us live in harmony with the Earth, to offer help, inspiration, and healing. They only require us to be willing to ask and to receive their counsel.
In the personal examples I shared with you, each of these beings brought messages that were incredibly helpful for me given the circumstances in which I was involved. In the first instance, the Hummingbird’s message was to lighten up and to be flexible with the challenges that I was facing as evidenced by the automatic smile that plastered my face at the sight of her. Couldn’t have been more perfect and a much needed message at that time!
When I consulted the Power Animal Oracle Cards and Elephant and Beaver showed up, their messages were quite clear and straightforward. Didn’t take a lot of contemplation to decipher what that meant in response to my question. The obstacles to which Elephant was referring were not physical obstacles but mental ones. My fears were based on questionable beliefs that were readily shaken out once I committed to going diving again. Beaver’s message was unequivocal. I do like it when my animal spirit guides are direct and straightforward like that.
Then there were the crows. Since I do considerable work with Raven, which is cousin to Crow, the repeated sightings of these crows confirmed what my friend was saying. It’s not unusual to see crows since their quite social and hang around human beings frequently, but I took these successive sightings as Spirit emphasizing that it would be best to wait and talk with my publisher face to face in order to pitch him my next writing project.
I’ve heard so many stories like these that I’m convinced that our animal brothers and sisters not only want to communicate but want to help us. It’s not just the animals themselves, but the spirit of these animals that comes through in their communications. For our part, it only requires us to be open to their help and learn how to discern their messages, which we’ll delve into in this course.
HOMEWORK
~~~~~~~~

I’d suggest keeping a journal for this course. Recall a time when you thought an animal was trying to communicate with you. This could be a domesticated animal or an animal in the natural world. Describe your experience with this in your journal. Also, for the next few days observe the animals in your environment. Like in the meditation, notice their characteristics, their behavior, demeanor, and any other qualities you pick up on, and record in your journal your observations.

There are several ways that people use to find their totem animals.
A particular animal feels good to you.
Your own affinity with an animal.
Medicine cards
Read books on Native American culture and shamanism, and other books on animals and their symbolism in different cultures.
Perform your own ritual
Dreams
Meditative state
Vision quest
Simple Exercises to Find Your Totem Animal

Exercise 1

Research for the local animals in your area. Keep in mind that power animals are not limited to mammals. They can be reptiles, insects, birds, and fish. Make a list and study them carefully. Notice what they eat, their behavior, and their habitat. If you want, visit them in their natural habitat and watch them interact with the environment. Pay special attention to the legends and sayings about them. Remember, "clever as a fox, strong as an ox." You will find some pretty interesting things! Think of their strengths and weaknesses. Recognize these qualities working within you. In this way you will narrow down your choices.

Exercise 2

Take a sheet of paper and make a list of your good qualities. Be honest here! If you want, you can also ask your friends and family to write down all those good qualities they see in you. Sometimes we do not see many of our own good qualities, so this might help you see how others perceive you. Once you have a list of all your good qualities, start researching for those animals that have those qualities that represent your higher self.

Exercise 3

Perhaps this exercise will sound silly, but I found that it helped me more than I thought when I was looking for another totem animal. This is a very simple exercise. All you have to do is look around your room. Yes, you heard me right! Look around your room and notice those posters, figurines, and maybe stuffed animals you got over your bed. Have you noticed you have a tendency to favor certain kind of animal(s)? I know I did when I was starting! I looked around my room and all I saw were wolves in posters, figurines, stuffed animals, and more. In 1979 I owned a gray timber wolf. Back in 1986, I owned a white timber wolf. And now I own a black hybred. Maybe you should consider it. It might be trying to tell you something. Reflect upon these questions:

"Why do you like that animal so much?"
"What characteristics does that animal have that you can identify yourself with?"

I guess the weasel can be both positive and negative. It symbolizes cleverness. He came up just recently in my medicine card reading as well. emoticon

Are Spirit Guides The Same as Totems?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By Shaman Elder Maggie Wahls
Spirit guides may or may not also be totem animals. I have a spirit guide who comes to me as a white pelican. I have an elephant who is strictly a totem and not a spirit guide. A spirit guide is a teacher with something to teach you. A totem animal is often a protector, a mate to travel the Inner Worlds with who knows its way around and can get you in, to your destination and out again safely. I can ride my elephant right into the Under World and he will stop at exactly the place I need to be to effect someone's healing. When I have the healing I climb back on and he brings me right back. If anything untoward appears he can step on it with out effort and so he protects me completely. That is a totem animal.
Why an elephant? If you look up elephants you will see Elephant: Royalty, strength, ancient wisdom, patience, careful, confident, education. No wonder I have an elephant as a totem. He represents me. Notice too that he is not a Native American animal. That means something, too.
Your totems choose you as you are aware. You meet a totem animal, usually in the Inner Planes but sometimes it is an animal you have a special affinity for or have seen a lot lately. I prefer to meet them on the Inner Planes in meditation or such because sometimes those animals you see a lot of in this world are bringing you a message and are not totems for you. It is easy to confuse the two.
Your totem animal can change during your life. As you grow and change your totem animals may change as well. You may have several totem animals at once. But one is a life totem and represents your basic self or personality, your essence.
Spirit guides are teachers. They come to guide you in your education. They teach you things. They may have lived other lives. They may be "ascended" beings. They may be the wind or Father Sky or a guardian angel. They may be your higher self. They may be God. You decide. They can be animals or plants or trees or people. Here is another wisdom nugget, everything has three emanations or faces or appearances. We do and plants do and animals do and everything does.
When I go into the Inner Worlds for a healing for someone, I encounter some being there who is responsible for the sickness. The first face it shows me is really goofy, odd or weird and I know that is not what it really is. So I dismiss that face and ask to see its true face. The next face it shows if it is a not nice being is some ferocious, grizzly, nasty, scary being who tries to bite me or otherwise scare me. But I am not scared because I know that is not its true face. I may have to fend it off or punch it or step on it or catch it but I am not scared of it. I dismiss it and ask to see its true face for the third time. The third time I see what it really is and if it is a not nice being it usually looks weak and small and very lacking in every department. This is the being I negotiate with.
So I know that everything has three faces. Another example is when I sit with a rock and it turns into a lily and then it becomes a butterfly and flies away. When I sit with a river and it becomes a meadow and then it is a bear walking away.
So my totem is an elephant, a white elephant and it does not change its face around me. Why? Because it represents me! It is one of my own faces! How cool! A totem is one of your own many faces. That is why some people call them "familiars".
Can we have more than three faces? Yup! Some people have hundreds of faces. But everything has at least three. And usually the three represent a plant, an animal and a sky creature.
Your spirit guides will help teach you intent, emotional control, knowledge and impeccability if you allow them. Remember it is always your free will to learn or not to learn. But don't travel to the Inner Worlds if you have not mastered the skills necessary to be safe there and to do your work there. And never go there just out of curiosity. There are too many discarnate beings waiting for you to come there unaware so they can get what they can get from you. They can be tricky and sly and even devious. Even one bee is enough to stay away from. It doesn't take a pack of grizzly bears to kill you.
