LMC797- Wow! GREAT JOB!!! I'm about 7 minute's behind you, but I'm working on it. I've been trying out some new shoe's at the wrong time. Got a blister on my heal, and the balls of my feet hurt, and so do my calf's. I'm going to wait and run mine on the last day. Don't think I can do any better at this point.

It's not how long it takes its that you decided to do the race and you finished. Thats what matters. Great job.

Today was my 5K race.
I posted a blog with all the details. But here it is, in a nutshell:

*200+ participants
*Came in 62nd, overall
*Dropped my time from 34+ min. to 30:12
*Took 1st place in my age group

Very happy with my race. I had wanted to run it in under 30 min. I came very close to that, missed it by 13 seconds.

Way to go, Threewishes87 !

It is a great accomplishment, to run a 5K! Especially at our age, I'm a couple years older than you. I really wish I'd gotten serious about my health sooner. I let a lot of great years go by, thinking how I was too old & fat to participate. Ha, I'd love to go back to my 30's or 40's now!

You are never too old to give it a try!

Completed my very first 5K yesterday. My time was 37:13 and considering this was my first competitive athletic event EVER in my 48 years on earth, I am very proud of me! Thanks, Sparkpeople, for helping me check one thing off my "bucket list"!

I am so bummed right now. I have run a 5k before, so I decided to challenge myself and for a 10k. The first three weeks of training went well. Infact my third week of training was done in CO while we were on vacation. I was excited to get back home and try running back in MN after the week in CO. But when we got home, things were so crazy at work, I wasn't able to get any training in during week 4. But was determined week 5 was going to happen. But then on Sunday I fell down the last 4 stairs to my basement :o( I jammed my right knee pretty good somehow. It is still swollen four days later. Walking is hard enough this week. I was so hoping it would at least be better by today to get a run in before I ran my 10k for the virtual race on Sat.........but that isn't going to happen. I don't know what to do now.

Hi! About blisters in between the toes: I don't have that problem. But I use five-fingered running shoes by Vibram. They separate the toes. I still get blisters occasionally on the bottom of my foot. They do take some time to get used to, though, because you're using a lot more foot muscles than regular running shoes. Maybe you want to try them. Or at least five-fingered socks to separate your toes.

I haven't been checking in, but i have been slowly doing the challenge. i ran 3.1 miles today in 43 minutes. I was able to run the whole time. I did my first 5k in may and I did another in June but i walked most of both. I think there is a 5k on 8/1.

Hugs,

Ran my 2nd real 5K race July 14, 4 weeks after the 1st. This time I ran it in 34:17, which is a PR for me. I was very happy with my time, especially since the course had a couple of challenging hills. I hadn't been running hills, since I've read it's better not to in the first few months of training. I've added a couple new routes to my training: I've got a 3.4 mile loop I do frequently, but have also done a 5K loop several times and a short 1.5 mile run that is hilly, so I get some of that challenge. Nice to have options that take more or less time. Some days I work more on speed, others on endurance. I look forward to running some of the same races next year and seeing the times come down.

Today was my scheduled virtual run however I actually found an organized local 5K. I ran it in 29:27. I am very happy with my time. I look forward to continue training! I was able to get some information about more 5K and a 7K coming up, that should keep me motivated.

I ran my first 5k on Friday in 30:09. Had a running partner who was with me on walking a majority of the race considering we each have had physical issues, but when the race started, the competitive nature of each of use led to running the first 2 miles, walking for 2 minutes, running for 1/2 mile, walking for a minute, before running to the finish line. My goal was somewhere under 40, but thanks to being motivated by my running partner, we were able to cut that by 10 minutes. Went for a run tonight for the first time since the race and had a difficult 2 miles running alone. This goes to prove that I will need to have my wife more involved in my training for the next race. I enjoyed the experience that I want to do more 5k races. A family member wants me to train for a 1/2 marathon, but that will be for later consideration. Good luck to all who have a race in the near future.

Today was the day for my first real 5K race. It was hot and about a mile into it I thought "why am I doing this?" I ran it in 37:40, not the fastest I've run in practice, but not bad for a newbie. A friend was also signed up for the race and she ran with me, even though her usual pace is a couple minutes faster per mile than mine. DH and DD were there at the finish line to cheer for me. The race start/end was only a mile from my house, so we walked there. On the walk home, my hubby commented that HIS legs were tired, LOL. We passed a lawn with sprinklers on the way home and I ran through the sprinklers. It was a fun way to cool down. I probably will run another race next month. I know that would keep me running 3 days a week, hopefully getting fitter and maybe even faster.

Did my "virtual" 5K today. It's the first time I've run 5K since I extended the 40 minute training run to 42 minutes to finish the distance 4 weeks ago. Since then, when I've been able to run, I've been focusing on doing shorter runs faster. Today I did the 5K in 38:20. That's 3:40 faster than 4 weeks ago. Still not a fast time, but for a 52 year old who's only been back running for 7-8 weeks, I'm happy with it. I have 3 more weeks until there is a "real" 5K I can run in locally. I'm hoping to be able to do it even faster. I've been doing the Spring Boot Camp challenge alongside this (they complement one another nicely) and have lost both pounds and inches this month. emoticon emoticon emoticon I'm making progress! emoticon

"Week" 5 is ending up taking several weeks for me. I did the first two runs on what was actually my 5th week, and then took a trip to help my daughter choose a wedding gown. I didn't have a 5K course plotted there, so I just did a couple more training runs, and was pleased to see my time getting better. But towards the end of the 2nd one (which would have been w6d1), I noticed a sore spot on my insole. Sure enough, I had a blister there. So I waited 3 days until I ran again, when the blister seemed flat again. MISTAKE! I ended up with a full, sore blister again. That was last Thursday. Tried to baby it, but still had a lot of walking to do at my high schooler's district tennis tournament Friday and Saturday. It's been flat again for a couple of days now. I was tempted to run this morning, but did 2.8 miles walking instead. So far, my foot is fine, so I'll try running again tomorrow or Friday. I'll do 2 miles and see how that goes. Not sure when I'll be able to do my 5K. In the meantime, I'm spending a little extra time strength training, so not all is lost. emoticon

Saturday is race day for me. I fell about 3 weeks ago--skinned my knee a LOT and the knee is still very sore to the touch--bone bruise? I don't know--hope it was nothing worse! It dosen't hurt to run on it--just don't poke at it. I can finally kneel a little.

So I lost a good week--between the fall and a quick trip to get daughter from college (20 hours in the car one way). But I hope to finish my 2nd ever 5K on Saturday. Beating my first time would be GREAT but right now I'll settle for finishing!

One more training run and then--5K, here I come!

ok ladies I have a question for you (warning kinda gross). I have been running for 6 weeks -now and the last 2-3 times I've ran I get blisters between my toes. Does anyone else have this problem? I have great running shoes and I don't notice any pain when I'm running it's the next day I end up w/blisters.

LIfe is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can.''

My race is Saturday so I am just adding extra days to week 5. I can do the time but I'm not up to 5k yet. But, my first time raced is May 20, so I'll get there.

Today was the first day I ran outside, as opposed to the treadmill. It is way harder outside! I can feel it in my hips and legs tonight.

oh gosh! I did it! Finally, I did it. no stops. It was really hard for me to do this challenge. I really wasn't sure I was going to be able to finish. I just kept trying. Im glad I did though. I jogged for 32 min. 3.9 miles. Im not sure the mileage is correct. I have to change the battery in my tracker.

I've almost completed my training. My last day of training is Friday.
Though I struggled, fought soreness, fatigue, moaned and groaned sometimes...It was worth it! I jogged for 32 min this morning. 3.7 miles. Im sweaty and tired, but I do feel good. I drink a lot of water when I jog. Im hoping I do well for our Relay for Life on the track. I think I do feel ready...Im sure gonna give it a try!

grrr! I just posted on week 3 instead of 5. I clicked on the email link. I just wasn't paying attention. Anyway...this is my final week. I jogged for 35 min without stopping...finally!! I really had a hard time with this challenge. I needed it though for our Relay for Life next month.Just over 3 miles jogging...I didn't want to just get thru it. I wanted it to use as a tool to prepare for the Relay for Life walk athon next month. It also helped me persevere. I got down to size 6 jeans as a bonus! That makes me feel very good.

Finished my 5k in 34:20! So excited that I finished it. I'm training for an 8k on St Patty's Day so this was a great training tool. I'm also down approximately 10 pounds since early January. A great feeling!

I did day one of week 5 today! It's all downhill from here (in a good way)- 30 minutes comes easily after the 40 minute workout from last week. I haven't signed up for any races yet, but I can continue to run 30 to 35 minutes a day until I do get a chance to race. After that, I'll probably up the time or pace. Or both.

When you do your training for week 5, come by this thread and tell us about your accomplishments for the day.

(Example )
How far did you walk?
How did you feel on the day you did it?
Or anything else you want to talk about for your 5k training for week 5

Lets support one another and cheer each other on.

Hugs!
