I got to 3.52 in 45 minutes on day 1, week 4. I went slow today, just wanting to get through the 35 minutes.

goodness sakes! I got in 3.1 miles today, still really uncomfortable, but im seeing a little improvement as far as not having to stop as often. Im not as sore either. I'm sure that helps.

Finished week four! Ran a total of around 11 miles this week... which is a lot more than I have ever done! Also, this proved to me that I can do what I previously couldn't- run for 40 minutes without stopping. My previous record was 15 emoticon

Week 4, Day 3: 40 minutes, 5.33 miles. I think this is the first time in my life that I've run continually for over 5 miles.

Week 4, Day 2 yesterday evening. Running continually for 35 minutes is easier when you already know you can do it! Ran the same course as Monday, slower on the front but faster on the end. Covered 4.62 miles.

Hey YOLANDA. I was feeling exactly the same as you, really anxious. I just decided I would run as far as I could without watching my clock, and when I absolutely feel I can't go any further, only then will I check the clock and then try and run another 1 minute before taking a break. By the time I checked my watch, 27 minutes had passed and I figured, if I can go that long without needing a break, surely I can do another 8 minutes. And I did! Also try and find a new route...one that you haven't even walked before. I went down this canal that's right by my house that I've never been down, and just seeing what was down there was enough distraction for me. Good luck.

I completed W4 D1 yesterday, and I loved every minute of it! Managed to do the whole 35 minutes without stopping, and got 3.86 miles! Very proud of myself. Already looking forward to my next run emoticon

I'm not sure how far I am going, have been concentrating more on the time intervals and was able to do my first 35 minute interval without stopping. Need to find a gadget to help track both, don't own an iphone. The added benefit to doing this training program is that I have finally started losing again after not losing any weight for 3 weeks. Only a pound but it appears that the last 10 are going to be hard to lose. Keep up the great work everyone! emoticon emoticon

I'm a little behind schedule, but I did the first 35-minute run today. I work out on a non-standard track which is smaller and has a slope. So I am guessing the distance. I run one lap and take a brief water break. Counting the breaks I did 9 laps in 35:30 minutes. I think it's progress. I've also lost a pound.

Ok, did my W4D2. 2.5 miles in 35 minutes. i was impressed with myself I could go that long with no breaks! I even jogged a few minutes after that, got up to 2.6 miles and stopped.
Not sure if this milage was totally accurate. I use the iphone application logyourrun. Anyone have anything else they use?
It just doesn't seem like I am going that slow... I am slow, but still...

I just saw the training for this week...jog for 35 minutes!!! I to feel anxiety about jogging straight for 35 minutes, so if there are any pointers on how to not think about it and just focus on the form I appreciate the advise.

Well I ran for 35 minutes but it was not without a few breaks. I really think it was anxiety because I knew that I had to run for 35 minutes. But after I did take few breaks which was for about 40 seconds I did feel better so we will try it again and hopefully this time I can do it!

I just started week 4... Not sure I'm really here yet... I don't know if I can jog 35 minutes straight yet. I can run for 40 minutes running for 4 minutes at a time with 1 minute breaks, and I think I can run about 20-25 minutes... not really sure... I ran about 2.2 miles without stopping once.
I'd really like to be able to do the 5k without taking many walking breaks. I'll do what I can do, though.

I think it will be challenging. I signed up for one that doesn't allow electronic devices, that means no music! Also, I've never really run on pavement before, I prefer trails.

My hips keep getting pretty sore...

anyway, I'm just proud of myself for doing this. Before I started running a few months ago, I was never able to run an entire mile, or even close. I'm amazed at how far I've already come.

I have had issues with my back so have only been able to log 2 running days a week! hoping to make up for that soon? we'll see... yesterday run was HORRIBLE... i was VERY frustrated.. although I ran for the full 26 mins I only ended up logging 1.71 miles... I have not figured out how to push myself enough when I havea 2 and 4 yr old in the jogging stroller I am struggling with the jogger i guess... but have to get it figured out as hubby is not around often enough/ or all the right days to "watch the boys for me? hoping tomorrow's run will be better... back is killing me today? planning on doing some yoga and stretching here hoping that will help and i'll be good for tomorrow's run!?

Great job AMELIASEWS!

I did my W4D1 yesterday and ran the whole thing non-stop. Didn't think I could do it but I did. I wish I had gotten in a full 3 mile tho, but maybe tomorrow :D

I just ran W4D1 and I did it! I only stopped and walked for about 15 seconds after the 25 minute mark! I am amazed- I have never run before and look at me now. Okay- so I'm a turtle, but hey, that means there is definitely room for improvement! emoticon

Just finished W4D1. I didn't think that I was going to be able to run for all 35 minutes, so I originally planned ot do it in several 8 minute stretches. However, once I started running, I found I could just keep going! I think the swimming cross-training has been helping!

W4D2 was a little bit tougher for me. I ran the 35 minutes, but I took two one-minute walk breaks in the middle, which I hadn't needed to do during Day 1 on Sunday. Granted, I took a rest day yesterday and had cortisone shots in my knees Doc said no restrictions, that I could run today, but maybe that was a factor? We'll see how Friday goes, that's even longer.

I'm a few days behind but I finished my Wk4D3 with a 40 min run today. Once again, the turtle class gained a little more speed, nothing to shake the trees about but my plan to get through without any injury or pain is working. I am staying with the plan and look forward to Wk5D1 on Thursday. ( I really want to do it tomorrow but I'm staying with recovery days.)

Hello all:

In the throws of week 4. Day 1, same apprehension as many of you about running/jogging without that break. Did it! So much of it is mental. Today was day 2 and had to walk at 2.7 not because of my legs or breathing but stomach/digestive. Was very worried about an unfortunate episode on the track! I'm not going to beat myself up, just take a little longer for week 4. My goal race isn't until fall so I'm not overly stressed. Anyone else have tender shins? I always worry about shin splints but realize it could just be soreness.

Happy running all!

I did my final run of week 4 this morning (at 4:30am because I couldn't sleep anymore). I thought it was a 45 minute run today (instead of just 40) and was a little upset that I had to stop at 42 minutes because I really had to go the bathroom and could NOT hold it another 3 minutes or even 30 seconds! LOL! I was so happy to see that instead of stopping short of the planned time of 45 minutes, I actually ran an additional 2! I did a total of 4.07 miles in 42 minutes! On to week 5!

BTW, I'm really considering continuing on with the 10K program, starting it in week 5 after I finish up next week. I really just like being on a program and knowing how much milage I should accomplish each day. Any others doing the same? Am I crazy?

Well, I did WkD1 and I must say that I was shocked that I went the 35 minutes. My turtle class speed is still there but I know it will improve. Considering my medical history, I confirmed that I can do this. I am challenging myself and that excites me. This program works or me.

My first run of week 4! I've been concerned about whether or not I could actually run for 35 minutes without doing the recovery walk intervals. So, I laced up my shoes with a little apprehension but kept telling myself I could do and.... I DID IT!! I ran for 35 minutes for a total of 3.3 miles and then kept going until I reached 3.5 miles (37 minutes). I am over the moon excited and happy with myself!! I love you SP!!!

I did Week 4 Day 1 today in the Oregon sunshine! I was worried about having to run for 35 minutes without a walking break, but it went surprisingly well. I felt like I slowed down a lot at the end though. Oh well. My race isn't for another 3.5 weeks so I think I have some time to work a little bit on endurance and speed. Good luck everyone! emoticon

I did manage to do some walk aerobics today, so maybe I will be able to jog some tomorrow, and give it all I can on the sixteenth for the 5k. Thank you for the encouragement.

You could skip it, or you could walk the 5k. If you are not feeling well, it's always better to rest.

I'm frustrated. I have been practicing for the 5k, like everyone else, and then got sick. I still practiced even in those first few days of a sore throat of course, but the fourth day I was beat. It was hard to get warm. My head was heavy. The fifth day wasn't much better- just mainly rested all the time I was awake. The sixth day, yesterday, I was tired yet, still having sinus/ ear stuffiness. Today, the seventh day, I got to have extra sleep, for which I'm grateful, but am frustrated that I haven't had the energy to practice and this is the week for the 5k. I don't know if I should go ahead and push through and practice a bit more and run the last day, last chance, to do the 5k or what. I do not like to not do something I signed up for. ARG

Did W4D3. I discovered that the company I work for is holding a 5k on 4/13 and the course runs right by my office so I decided to run that route today at lunch. For the first time ever, I ran 5k without stopping--5k in 29:33, which is FAR better than I thought I could do. I continued on to run 40 mins, though I did walk for a bit after hitting the 5k.

So now I have two 5ks scheduled...the work one on 4/13 and my original 5k on 4/30. I'm going to keep up running every other day and see if I can bring my time down even further.

I've really appreciated this training program and all the support you all have provided. I never thought that I'd be able to improve this much this quickly...just 4 weeks ago I could barely jog for 4 minutes and look at me now!

See you in Wk5 and I'll hang around these forums to hopefully help someone else as much as some of you have helped me.

Arcelt, it does take me a while to warm up and get into the running groove. Most of the time, my legs feel pretty dead for at least the first 20 minutes of my run.

Arcelt great job! I have been talking to some friends that run and they as well as others they know all say that it takes time to settle into running and feel comfortable. I would think it took that long do to the intensity of your run. I think it is great that you are changing up where you are running.

I did w4 d1 today bright and early. I am happy to say that in the 35 mins at a comfortable pace I reached 2.59 miles. My goal was to run the whole time. So I am hopping to pick up the pace a little when I run d2.

Did W4D2 today on a cinder track outside the gym I go to. I don't know if it's the cinders or the fact that there are more turns than road running, or what, but I had a tougher go of it than W4D1. At 35 minutes I was just at 3.1 miles, as opposed to 3.3 miles on my last run which was on the road. I was sucking wind so bad at 15 minutes that I had to walk for a minute but then I dialed back the pace and was able to push through to 35.

HOWEVER, I noticed that just as I was about to hit 35 minutes, my legs got lighter and running was easier than it had been at any point in the run previous. In fact, I felt so good that I went five more minutes just for grins and totaled almost 3.6 miles in 40 minutes.

I've noticed others posting similar things, where they get a second wind after 30 minutes or so. Is there a physiological reason for that to happen or is it just mental?

Did wk4 d1 yesterday morning on the treadmill. The first 28 minutes were very difficult, and after that my legs seemed lighter for the last 7 minutes. I completed 2.33 miles in 35 minutes.

Sam, if you get a side stitch, try putting your hand over the area that is hurting and exhaling HARD. You can also raise the arm that is on the side that is hurting.

W4D3: Went surprisingly well considering I have a headache. 3.1 miles in 32:40; 3.8 miles in 40:00. Day 1 and Day 2, like clock work, I got a terrible pain in my side at 20 minutes into the run. Don't know why. Today, it hurt just a bit, but not until around 30 minutes into it.
Any ideas why this happens to me?

I am starting week 4 on Monday, and I am totally looking forward to it. I haven't run for 35 minutes straight in a long time, but I know I can do it, even if I do have to go slow. Hitting my stride has been a real struggle with the intervals, because it typically takes me 30 minutes to really feel comfortable with my run, and with the intervals I never really feel like I get comfortable. It should be interesting to see how Monday goes. "See ya" Monday after wk4 d1!

Completed W4D1 today. I was a little intimidated by the lack of walking spells but decided to give it a go anyway. We are visiting my parents' house this weekend so I plotted a course near their house and went.

The run was pleasant except for a sometimes annoying headwind and some steep hills. I managed to go 16 minutes before I had to pull up for my first walk. I had a couple of one minutes walks during the last 20 minutes but managed to make it 3.3 miles in the 35 minutes. This is under my goal of 35 minutes for my first 5k.

I do have running socks, but I didn't think about until now that the last two nights that I've gotten blisters, I was not wearing them. I had plain old cotton socks on. Huh, I guess I'm sorting through clothes today to find all my good running socks. Lol!

KWILLIAMS17, are you wearing good running socks? I had problems with blisters when wearing cotton socks. I bought some poly running socks that wick and they are so much more comfortable. They're more expensive, but worth it. Hope this helps!

Question, I've started getting blisters on my longest toe on each foot, this has never happened before, any ideas on why im getting them or what to do? They're pretty sore afterwards.

W4D3 this evening after work. Made 3 miles in 35 minutes, with 25-30 mph crosswind, and my ankle was really bad the last 1/2-2/3 of the third mile. I'm afraid I'm gonna have to sign up to walk instead of run my first 5K of this spring, since I need to get my registration in the mail tomorrow or Sat.

Added later: Well, phooey; was supposed to go 40 minutes. Had 35 in my head still. Not sure my ankle could have taken anoither 5 minutes.

W4 completed run 1 & 2. Did 3 miles in 35 minutes both times. And, I have a "hats off" to the folks that came up with the virtual 5k & the training plans. What an awesome deal! This is the first time EVER that I've been able run continuously for 30+ minutes without walking. I was a little doubtful about whether or not I'd be able to do it. But I figured why not give it a try~& I did it!! Have a good St. Paddy's Day people & happy training!
