Week 2, Day 1 was "comfy" (Mirage's word).
Week 2, Day 2 was....not. I guess I needed the lesson in humility. I was expecting today to be as good as Day 1 or better and instead it was a real challenge. I had to jog more slowly and I was struggling.... But I finished so I'll take my victory there.

Hey, I made it through Week 2, Day 1. My goal was to make it feel "comfy," and, you know, there were some parts that actually felt that way!

W1, D3! Much, much easier when you follow the training program! I did the 3 min. of jog with 1 min. of walk soooo much easier than 4 minutes....

I even managed to do a few weights after the jog.

I just tracked my day and saw that I had inadvertently jumped to week 2 and was trying to do 4 minutes of jogging for every 1 minute of walking. W1, D3 should be a cinch!

Still excited, but I'm really tired today. I did W1, D1 and then went back later in the day for my normal Zumba class. It felt great at the time, but maybe that was overkill? In any case, I took a 20-minute walk this afternoon and I hope I feel much better tomorrow.
By fuel clean, do you mean hold the processed food, or it is something else?
Thanks for the support!!!

Ooooo! I'm so excited! I finished W1, D1! I jogged at 5 mph and walked at 3.5 and made it through tired but fine. A few twinges here and there as I jogged, but nothing that lasted or made me worried. Hooray!

Hi Lisa!
I'm so proud of you as you are excited and have the drive to do this! Trust me! I couldn't walk a block without thinking I would die! Stay focused. You have the will to do this!
emoticon
I keep forgetting I live in a run rich environment. Our 5Ks are in the $15-$25. After I completed this plan, I started doing one race a month. BUT I started doing 5Ks for training runs as well. If I want more speed then I'll focus on speed drills. Normally a nice smooth pace with good form keeps me in the game. I still do that today. I think it's important to put weekly run training into our exercise schedule. FACT! You will lose all that you trained for if you let 2 weeks pass with no training. I know. I've done that when I've been sick. I just used this plan to see where I was then went from there.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the support!

MONTY: Since I had previously only done the training for day 1 of week 1 I decided to just continue with it. I did day 2 this morning and I think I did okay. At least I finished without completely collapsing. I wanted to start the training program now to see if I CAN complete it. I'll try to keep my training up and when it gets closer to race day I'll start the program again, and hopefully at a faster speed. I would love to sign up for more 5k's but honestly they are too expensive at $35.00 to $45.00 per race.

BECKYANNE1: Yes, people may think 5k's are the easiest races to run but the shorter the race the faster you run. I just want to beat my previous time of 41:33 ( I think I walked about half of it).

JENNKFIT: Good job completing week 1, I'm right behind you and will finish mine on Thursday. My pace is not as fast as yours, but I'm sure I'll get faster as I go. And a giant emoticon for raising $340.00! What is HLH?

Have a great week everyone and happy running!!!

Week 1 training done! So excited and feeling amazing. Barely winded and I had to up the running portion to 6.0mph. Walking pace was 3.5mph. Psyched for week 2. PLUS I've already raised $340 for my fight against HLH team!

Congratulations for everyone in their week 1, keep it up, you'll notice yourself getting better and it will surprise you. I was SHOCKED, when I was done with the workout today! I thought, hey that's it?!

I agree! Try and find some 5k's before hand to do. You don't have to run the whole thing, but it's good training and it gives you a good idea what to expect. Alot of people think these races are easy, short races when in fact they are fast races. Enjoy!

Hi Lisa!
After doing some data mining, I found
The only way to reset is to quit and rejoin. At the bottom of your tracking page there is a small link that says 'Leave This Program' Click it - then rejoin - all your days will be blank again.
Let me know if it works.

I also was wondering why you are waiting so long to do a 5K. Keep in mind You will finish this training in the recommended time. THEN, in order to stay race ready, you will need to run train at least 3 hours a week. That' a goof thing as you will be NOT lose the conditioning and strength you build in the program.

I look at races as a test of your training. So, why not try to find a race coming up sooner, even if you just want to use it as a training run. I do the same thing with Triathlons. Then I review and assess where I need to train better.

In any case, I am happy that you are coming back into the program. Use good time management, stay strong, and rock your run.

Hi everyone, I have a question about the training program. I started it a while ago but never finished it, is there a way to reset it? I did the first workout this morning and want to log it but it has my old stats.

I'm planning on signing up for a 5k that's coming up in November and my goal is to run the entire thing, not to run/walk like I've done in the past.

I'm doing week 1 two times. So I'm in my 2nd trip through week 1. I can definitely do the week 1 program. I had an issue with my mitral valve prolapse so I decided to hold myself back a week just to make sure I'm good. I've got one more run this week and I'll be ready to move onto week 2 next week.

Fabiservante, the Spark Activity Tracker is not exactly accurate. If you know your treadmill is accurate (not all of them are either) you can go to your Tracker page and do a recallibration based on the numbers from your treadmill. Also, remember, your activity tracker only starts counting your movement as a "workout" after you've moved for 10 consecutive minutes (those 10 minutes are included in the workout time). If you stop moving say 5 minutes into your workout, or if you stop moving for a second with 5 minutes left in your workout, those 5 minutes won't be included in your workout time. The tracker wants you to really, really get in the full time of your workout. I call it my little cheater blocker. lol Once I get started on a workout, no way, no how am I stopping until it's done.

I am "late" for a group start but I started the 5K training today and got out and did 2.85 miles in roughly 5 minute "sets"--easier to do 1-2 minutes rest and 3-4 minutes run with my plain old analog watch! I figure it is still good.

We have snow melting today--it will be freezing tomorrow and the rest of the week so I'll likely be running on the treadmill instead of the streets. I enjoyed getting outside today!

Outstanding effort out of the starting gate, Team!

Stay focused, fuel clean, & hydrate! Also insure you are doing good leg training from glutes to calves as well as core strengthening. Everything works as a unit!

I wish I could give a definitive answer to the logging. I do it manually from my Garmin & enter it into "My Fitness."

Hi everyone! Well yesterday was my Day 1; Week 1 of my 5k challange. I felt great. But, I have a question how do we track the calories we actually burned during the training? When I finished the treadmill read that my workout was 32 minutes, I went for 2.12 miles, and burned 300 calories during the workout. But as I tried to logg the information onto my fitness tracker the information was automatically done for me stating that my workout was :Walking: 3.75 mph (16 minutes per mile), for 32 minutes; and burning 231 calories. So what I did was leave the information that was automatically calculated by sparkpeople and just added a cardio workout of : Treadmill for 5 minutes and burning the remaining 69 calories.

But is there a way to actually input the information that the treadmill reads when the training is done on a treadmill?

I am reaching my goal TODAY; EVERYDAY!
Fabi

Great Job Katyayanna. This isn't my first 5k but I have always run/walked them in the past and this time I want to run the whole thing. I am starting out in the gym on a treadmill since I seem to do better if I don't go home after class and then try to exercise. I have completed the training for week 1 so far and have plans to finish the rest. I am remembering how nice running can be so I hope that keeps me going.

The only thing you can't accomplish is the thing you don't start.

Today will be my last - and longest - run for week one. I was going to do it tomorrow, but let's be honest: I'm going to spend half of the day cooking and the other half eating since it's Canadian Thanksgiving.

In exciting (maybe just for me? emoticon ) news, I realized the route I ran for day 2 is exactly 5k. Depending on how my legs feel, I'm going to try to run the entire route and get a feel for what my 5k time currently is.

Good job, K!

When I started looking at my body as an engine, I wanted to burn clean fuel! That changed everything. It really is all about the training too! Running a 5K race is just a quiz on how good your training is! That's why I always say "Train well, fuel clean, run well!"

Trust me when I say as you continue, you will become better. Once again, patience and perseverance will get you there! Stay strong!

I did my first run for this program on Tuesday and it really knocked me on my backside. It was a bummer, but it also inspired me to work harder and eat better so I can become stronger.

Today, I'll do my second run. I have a pre-workout fuel and post-workout electrolytes, so here's hoping that things go better.

Becca, Outstanding time and effort. I remember feeling good during the plan and always went from it! You're ready!

Helix, I worked on my Pose form, and focused on that. The speed came as I settled into my Pose stride.

Thanks for posting and keeping us informed!

I finished Wk1D1 yesterday. I am not new to race running, certainly not 5ks! However, I had a baby in June and wasn't allowed to run the entire 9months of pregnancy. So that in addition to the 6 weeks I waited post-partum, I feel like I need to start over. I actually did a 5k the very beginning of Aug but it wasn't pretty! I like having a running plan to follow even if I change it up a little bit.
Yesterday I was at 32 min but so close to completing 3 miles that I went for it and finished in 33.30! Felt great afterwards.

Keep it up everyone!

Did 2.6 miles yesterday afternoon and was really dragging. I was trying out the Pose running stride Mirage recommended, which was very challenging for me, but which did feel like it was protecting my knees. It was also crazy hot out so I had to push through the discomfort to finish each running interval. Anyways, I felt good about it afterwards and had energy enough to do a 30 minute walk today in the same heat.

I ran/walked 3.4 miles yesterday in about 45 minutes. I probably went too far, but I felt good for the whole run and really enjoyed the pace of walking for a minute and then running for 3. My music seemed to speed up every time it was time for running. :)

I fit the workout in with family time by jogging my daughter in her jog stroller down to the playground where my husband met us and then finishing up the jog while they played. Then I got a ride home and did some stretching. My new favorite post-workout snack is pistachios and dates btw -- it's got all the sweet and the salt I could want!

Embrace it. Focus on one week at a time. You stay with the plan. Your cardiovascular and skeletormuscular systems will adapt and it will become easier! Just insure you're fueling clean and hydrating properly. I always look at my body as an engine now. Burning clean fuel is the way to go.
