Week 1 - Day 3 (yesterday)

Run/walk 1.72 mi in 34:06 min, pace 19:48/mi. That's almost a minute and half shaved off the pace. I'm getting there...

I continue to preach to everyone, speed is not what we're doing here! Conditioning and Endurance is what we're training for. You are doing fine! The speed will come after one has run a 5K comfortably. That is the goal!

Day 2 - Week 1

Walked today for 1.65 miles in 30 minutes. That's actually about the same pace that I ran yesterday. I'm such a s-l-o-w runner. Oh well...I'll get faster.

Injuries can frustrate the heck out of you. There are days now when my body hurts and I wonder why I do this. Then I remember where I was and the struggles I went thru to get here and that usually keeps me motivated. I started out over enthusiated and burned out along the way. Now my attitude is to have fun and to challenge myself and to not worry about keeping up with everyone else. I'm in it for me and me alone!

Finished my day 3 run today. 36 minutes and I covered.. 4.59 kilometers (big surprise there!) emoticon

Felt tired after the run, but a shower + a walk to the store to buy some drinks & snacks, helped to shake off the tiredness.

Ready to start week 2. emoticon

At the end of 2014 I was going through a time of injury, illness, and doubt. I contemplated my future as a runner and a Triathlete. At home sick, I watched a replay of the Ironman Kona World Championship. That and thinking about how my Granddaughter looked up to me as an athlete was all I needed for inspiration and the burn to carry on!

There was a marathon on TV here last Sunday. I think watching the runners jog, gave me motivation. Some jogged slowly; I realized it's not a race per se, it's more of a "let's try to finish!" event.

Some local celebrities participated in their first ever marathon saying: "It was very hard, but surprised to have finished in under 5 hours!"

Their words were so encouraging. I made a new goal to at least try next year. emoticon

Everybody here is awesome!

I am a little slow on my week 1, having just finished run #2.
Using the Spark Maps, I calculated my distance as: 3.93 km, running 7.6 km/hr (much faster than I thought!!!) and completed 5749 steps.

I wore tights under my running pants along with knee supports. The whole run felt much more comfortable. emoticon

Great to see everyone is posting! AND I can say that it is so possible to be running in whatever capacity at 80 and above. I've started focusing on short distances personally since I became a Triathlete at 63! I'm enjoying it so much and running for longevity so safely is the key word.

Hi MRILEY123 --

My runs are usually through the neighborhood, on asphalt. I'm living in the countryside of Japan, not in the city, so it's mainly just running past houses, schools, small parks.

There are a lot of runners here -- it's popular among people over 40. In my neighborhood I see a man who looks to be in his early 70s -- running -- everyday. emoticon

I can only hope I will be as fit when I'm older!

Today was my second run. My interval lengths are not according to the schedule, but the total distance run is about right. I am running in alleys until I can get into the park. The park trails are too muddy and don't need anyone tearing them up. Glad to hear about everyone else's runs. Enjoying the warm midwestern weather.

I just got my second run done today. I am already behind because of impossible weather! Ice is melting now at last. I run my three miles on a quiet Indiana country road with no traffic and no dogs.

CUTENEKKO -- have you got your second workout in yet? I can't imagine what your running route looks like in Japan.

Hi everyone, emoticon

Newbie here. I'm Canadian, but living in Japan now. emoticon emoticon I work as a teacher, teaching adults English as a second language (for business).

I just completed the 30-day walkabout challenge on Sparkpeople, so I decided to up my game and do a 5K run.

I just started week 1 today and finished the first run -- 32 minutes of walk/jog intervals. Even in the chilly weather, the run felt refreshing -- and the hot shower afterwards, even more so!

Living in a foreign country can be lonely sometimes, so I hope other runners here will keep me up to date on all the news from back home. ^_^

Nice to hear spring weather has finally arrived! I read about the terrible winter storms on the U.S east coast and many Bostontonians teasing they felt like Canadians!

I think it's better to be safe than sorry! AND you still got a good workout! When you do fire it up, do exactly what the plan says. The recovery days are sacred. Take them to either strength train, or even a healthy walk. More importantly, have fun with it! Don't hesitate to post on the forums and holla if you need anything! I'm excited for you!

Thank you, Beckyanne1, for that encouragement. Today I got it done! First workout! It was 8 degrees with bad ice about 1/4 mile of it, and I only did 2 miles in the 32 minutes. I had on 18 articles of clothing, including the bandana I used to tie my timer around my neck so I could hear it. Think how much faster I will be in 5 weeks without the ice and all those clothes!

I was so psyched to begin Day 1 today, but icy snow/rain mix ruined my plan! Schools closed, roads closed. Not a good day to start. I rode my stationary bike and will hope to start running on Thursday. (I work all day and night on Wednesdays).

Well, a little late because of visitors and hiking instead of running, but . . . finished week 1. And I felt good - probably especially because I traded serious hills for the mostly flat (and yes, still a bit icy/muddy), which made me feel rather fast all of the sudden. I may just keep with that theory of switching up hills with flat each week.

Congrats on Day 1 finished -

2nd run today in the cold sunshine for me today...
A question - I feel like I could keep running through the walk breaks most of the time(except going up steeps). Does that mean I should up the intensity? Or replace the walking with running? Any thoughts? thanks much -

Day 1 done. Sadly, the snow is mostly gone so I've traded my skis for running since the shoulder season has arrived early. A hilly and muddy route, but the sun felt great. Thought I'd follow a plan this time instead of running randomly in addition to regular workouts - and see what happens.

Thanks, Monty! Tonight I ran day 3. I have to say, it was a huge difference from day 2 for me. I think so much of running is mental for me. My body can do it, but I talk myself out of it. Somehow that difference of an extra 3 minute run was scary. I had trouble the whole time...but I did it! I got through it and ran the whole time (well, except for the minutes of walking). It wasn't easy and it wasn't pretty...but I did it! I'm hoping to get in my next run (woohoo--week 2!) on Sunday before we celebrate Christmas with some of our family.

Day Two Done! I wasn't feeling it when I started, but once I got going, this was easier (and a tiny bit faster) than the first day. Looks like day three is an extra interval...

Yoga is so good for runners. All my Elite Triathlete & Runner friends include it in their cross training. When I start feeling the effects in my legs and core during a session, I get excited. I know it's making me better and keeping me flexible at the same time!

Got my run in yesterday while my partner went to yoga. Another 4.2 miles in 64 minutes, throwing some four minute jogs in near the end to prep for Week 2. Had to keep slowing down my jogging pace, but I know I'm supposed to focus on endurance first, then speed, so I'm not gonna let it get me down ;)

SO says the Sunday yoga class has a different instructor and style, and he said I might like it more than Tue/Thu classes. Maybe I'll run those nights and switch to yoga on Sundays. I'm so pleased with this gym! It's laid-back, well-equipped, decorated super cool, and never busy. Had plenty of time to check out some weight machines after running and got in a reasonable upper body set. Adding in a little planking and some crunches and feel like I'm just about hitting all my marks again :)

Got on the scale yesterday to see the damage I've done since I moved last winter, and it wasn't great, but not quite as bad as I was afraid of. The problem with having a number is hoping to see it drop... plan to avoid the scale for a couple weeks just in case it takes a while to budge.

Sore today! Finally getting back to running, after having lost a LOT of ground over the last year.

Hilly zombie 5k on Saturday had me walking crooked for a few days, so after yoga on Tuesday I made it to the treadmill last night. Did Week 1, Day 1 and then switched to 1.5 min walk / 1 min jog for another 25 minutes or so (the C25K week 1 day 1). Was killing time waiting for my partner to get to the gym, so pushed it maybe a little hard, but I feel pretty good!

Now I just need to make a strength plan, cuz I was a little unfocused with some lifting after the treadmill. The weight machines can be intimidating!

Now I'm STARVING ;)

Alright, Idaho! Way to get off the blocks and on the run. Nice and easy works. It's about conditioning and endurance. Speed will come later! I love it when Team Members record their progress in the week forums!

Way to get out of the gates, Elaine. Remember n easy pace, hydrate, and fuel clean for energy. It's essential that you stretch after so you can work the lactic acid out and recover faster.

Week 2, Day 1 was "comfy" (Mirage's word).
Week 2, Day 2 was....not. I guess I needed the lesson in humility. I was expecting today to be as good as Day 1 or better and instead it was a real challenge. I had to jog more slowly and I was struggling.... But I finished so I'll take my victory there.
