Good job, Dawn! I've had to repeat in the middle of a week in the past. You will also build confidence as you progress in the program. Embrace your training.

I'm doing week 1 two times. So I'm in my 2nd trip through week 1. I can definitely do the week 1 program. I had an issue with my mitral valve prolapse so I decided to hold myself back a week just to make sure I'm good. I've got one more run this week and I'll be ready to move onto week 2 next week.

Week 1, Day 1. I have no idea why the run tonight felt difficult but it did. About halfway through I didn't think I'd have the energy to finish the whole thing but I did it! Phew!

Fabiservante, the Spark Activity Tracker is not exactly accurate. If you know your treadmill is accurate (not all of them are either) you can go to your Tracker page and do a recallibration based on the numbers from your treadmill. Also, remember, your activity tracker only starts counting your movement as a "workout" after you've moved for 10 consecutive minutes (those 10 minutes are included in the workout time). If you stop moving say 5 minutes into your workout, or if you stop moving for a second with 5 minutes left in your workout, those 5 minutes won't be included in your workout time. The tracker wants you to really, really get in the full time of your workout. I call it my little cheater blocker. lol Once I get started on a workout, no way, no how am I stopping until it's done.

I am "late" for a group start but I started the 5K training today and got out and did 2.85 miles in roughly 5 minute "sets"--easier to do 1-2 minutes rest and 3-4 minutes run with my plain old analog watch! I figure it is still good.

We have snow melting today--it will be freezing tomorrow and the rest of the week so I'll likely be running on the treadmill instead of the streets. I enjoyed getting outside today!

Stay focused, fuel clean, & hydrate! Also insure you are doing good leg training from glutes to calves as well as core strengthening. Everything works as a unit!

I wish I could give a definitive answer to the logging. I do it manually from my Garmin & enter it into "My Fitness."

Hi everyone! Well yesterday was my Day 1; Week 1 of my 5k challange. I felt great. But, I have a question how do we track the calories we actually burned during the training? When I finished the treadmill read that my workout was 32 minutes, I went for 2.12 miles, and burned 300 calories during the workout. But as I tried to logg the information onto my fitness tracker the information was automatically done for me stating that my workout was :Walking: 3.75 mph (16 minutes per mile), for 32 minutes; and burning 231 calories. So what I did was leave the information that was automatically calculated by sparkpeople and just added a cardio workout of : Treadmill for 5 minutes and burning the remaining 69 calories.

But is there a way to actually input the information that the treadmill reads when the training is done on a treadmill?

I am reaching my goal TODAY; EVERYDAY!
Fabi

Great Job Katyayanna. This isn't my first 5k but I have always run/walked them in the past and this time I want to run the whole thing. I am starting out in the gym on a treadmill since I seem to do better if I don't go home after class and then try to exercise. I have completed the training for week 1 so far and have plans to finish the rest. I am remembering how nice running can be so I hope that keeps me going.

The only thing you can't accomplish is the thing you don't start.

Today will be my last - and longest - run for week one. I was going to do it tomorrow, but let's be honest: I'm going to spend half of the day cooking and the other half eating since it's Canadian Thanksgiving.

In exciting (maybe just for me? emoticon ) news, I realized the route I ran for day 2 is exactly 5k. Depending on how my legs feel, I'm going to try to run the entire route and get a feel for what my 5k time currently is.

When I started looking at my body as an engine, I wanted to burn clean fuel! That changed everything. It really is all about the training too! Running a 5K race is just a quiz on how good your training is! That's why I always say "Train well, fuel clean, run well!"

Trust me when I say as you continue, you will become better. Once again, patience and perseverance will get you there! Stay strong!

I did my first run for this program on Tuesday and it really knocked me on my backside. It was a bummer, but it also inspired me to work harder and eat better so I can become stronger.

Today, I'll do my second run. I have a pre-workout fuel and post-workout electrolytes, so here's hoping that things go better.

I finished Wk1D1 yesterday. I am not new to race running, certainly not 5ks! However, I had a baby in June and wasn't allowed to run the entire 9months of pregnancy. So that in addition to the 6 weeks I waited post-partum, I feel like I need to start over. I actually did a 5k the very beginning of Aug but it wasn't pretty! I like having a running plan to follow even if I change it up a little bit.
Yesterday I was at 32 min but so close to completing 3 miles that I went for it and finished in 33.30! Felt great afterwards.

Keep it up everyone!

Did 2.6 miles yesterday afternoon and was really dragging. I was trying out the Pose running stride Mirage recommended, which was very challenging for me, but which did feel like it was protecting my knees. It was also crazy hot out so I had to push through the discomfort to finish each running interval. Anyways, I felt good about it afterwards and had energy enough to do a 30 minute walk today in the same heat.

I ran/walked 3.4 miles yesterday in about 45 minutes. I probably went too far, but I felt good for the whole run and really enjoyed the pace of walking for a minute and then running for 3. My music seemed to speed up every time it was time for running. :)

I fit the workout in with family time by jogging my daughter in her jog stroller down to the playground where my husband met us and then finishing up the jog while they played. Then I got a ride home and did some stretching. My new favorite post-workout snack is pistachios and dates btw -- it's got all the sweet and the salt I could want!

Embrace it. Focus on one week at a time. You stay with the plan. Your cardiovascular and skeletormuscular systems will adapt and it will become easier! Just insure you're fueling clean and hydrating properly. I always look at my body as an engine now. Burning clean fuel is the way to go.

Monty,
Thanks for the welcome! I worked for two hours trying to get it to work. But this morning when i got up it was showing the tracking button again. I kinda expected it to take me to a page to record my distance or something but it just made a sound so I hope it is tracking, but just in case I will track it under mileage. This first week is really challenging, hope I can keep up the pace because week four looks terrifyingly hard! But when the going gets tough, the tough get going, right? emoticon

Welcome, Lacreshah!
I'll have to take a look at that training program. I would record it in my Fitness Tracker under Mileage for now. You might want to try refreshing the page. No matter what, keep working the program. You might want to just go ahead and submit the situation here.

Hi There!

I have finished my second day of the running pogram. The first day was Friday and the second day was Wednesday. I have tried to track my workouts but there is not a button anymore. How can I track my progress? I have tried multiple ways and still cannot get my "track" button to reappear on my training program. Any ideas?

Completed Week 1- kind of! I started on Wednesday and ran again today, but I think I'm going to move on to Week 2 on Monday so my training week matches up with a calendar week. Felt pretty good- the first two intervals are the toughest for me. After that I find my rhythm and it gets a little easier. I'm really slow though! My 5k is in 7 weeks though, so I figure I'll use weeks 6 and 7 to work on my pace.

It will get easier, but you will also have days where it seems like it's harder. For me personally, it's harder to do a 5k now than 5 miles. I think it's because of the fact that I run a faster pace now and I tend to run a bit slower longer distances. Anyway, just keep it up and before you know it, you'll be doing those 5k's like they were nothing!

Yes, it does get easier with training.I did 6 5K races before I started running the full 5K! (It was after I finished this program!) I also believe in interval running even at Half Marathon levels. So have faith that you will do it. Embrace those recovery days.I will continue to post links that educate us on smarter training and running! Be safe and train well!

Just joined this group. I've been doing the Ease into 5K app and am on Week 6. It has me running 8 minutes at a time with walking cycles which seems similar to this so I'm gonna try it out. :). Looking forward to being able to run a whole 5K in the future!!
I'm still a slowish runner, but knowing that I'm running is whats important!!

Week 1 day 1. I did join walk jog group were week 1 was to walk 4 minutes jog 1 minute, it was too easy. So, I tried the running program today. Whew rough first day. I was only able to do 4 sets. At 224lbs last time I checked I think I will need to repeat a couple weeks to build up to a full run. Although my planned July 4 run I will try and run it I doubt I can run the whole time, but I will finish my first 5K. Very exciting about teaching myself how to run.

Week 2 day 3. Very good day for breathing! Just hot. No problems except the usual need to walk more than prescribed one minute breaks in the middle. But I don't give up and I usually start feeling pretty good after I get past this little "wall" and start running again. We'll see how I do in week 3. I may repeat week 3 again rather than go right to running straight through.

Wore my New Balances today. Really like my Nike Frees a lot better.

Week 2 day 2. It's been raining cats and dogs so I've been on the treadmill only most of these two weeks. I'm not quite following the plan, I guess, because my new plan is to 3.1 miles or farther, however I need to accomplish that. About half way through this I seem to hit a little wall/overheat zone and a one minute just doesn't seem to fix me. So I'm walking as long as I need to to recover. Today 3.1 miles took 51.52 minutes including warm up. But I'm not quitting before I get to 3.1 miles and that's what matters to me!

Edited to add: and about two hours later, I feel mighty good about slogging through, good days and bad days... by the time the first 5k rolls around, it won't matter whether I'm having a good day or a bad day because I will have experienced getting through many of these!

I felt much better today. I actually went much longer than the 35 minutes. Did 5 min warm up, 10 min cool down, 40 min run/walk. Hit an overheat zone at minute 19 of the 40 minute run/walk, but was prepared with a wet cloth. I slowed to a walk and ran that cloth all over my face, neck and chest. I walked about three minutes, decided I was fine and started running again. No nausea, no other problems the rest of the run. None of my other walks were more than a minute.

After completing week 1, again. I feel really good. I was able to make it the whole way this last day without looking at the clock! I have found that maybe my previous walk/jog was not nearly as time set as the program, I walked much more. I am excited now to begin week 2. emoticon

I haven't thrown up since, but I've been dogged by overheating and queasiness while running and also during other activities. I even got a pregnancy test because I'm generally feeling tired and I keep crying over my math homework. I don't think it has anything to do with running and I'm not pregnant (thank goodness, at my age - and my husband's 67!). I think I've been fighting some bug and it won't go away. (Maybe the bug is premenopause?)

Yesterday I only did 12 minutes so I didn't log it. They were a great 12 minutes but all the sudden I had to stop. Today I did a slow 38 so I logged it.

Shiraz-Way to Go! I only drink 1 cup of coffee in the early morning and I pee quite a few times afterwards. I will go before I leave the house and when I get down to the lake (less than 10 min) I will stop at a porta potty and go 1 more time before my run. The throwing up, sometimes it happens. I watched a couple of the Biggest Loser shows this season and there was one young guy who threw up all the time. Hopefully that won't happen any more for you. I'm glad you're enjoying running. It will make it easy to continue!

Day 2 32 minutes including warm up, but I took pedometer off so it wouldn't count my 10 minute cool down. I did 2.5 miles in the 32 minutes. I felt pretty good. It was a little too close to my morning coffee, so I really needed to pee by 22 minutes in... just a future note to self to drink less coffee the morning of a run. I've got a general leg burn from my work outs in general, and my ankles burn a little, but I am feeling really jazzed. I have found - at age 47 - something I love to do.

Well, I did my first one, although I felt like I was cheating a bit when I entered my time. I was using a treadmill, so when I suddenly had to stop to throw up (I am not lying or exaggerating here) I just pushed stop. Then I pushed start again when I came back a couple minutes later. I did come back and I did finish. Don't have a clue what happened. Too close to lunch?

I! I have been working on the couch to 5K program for about a week before I 'found' this team on SparkPeople so I am excited to have the support here as well. I did train today but used the other breakdown (they are very similar actually). I walked 5 minutes, jogged 8 minutes, walked 5 minutes, jogged 10 minutes and finished with a 4 minute walk. I am feeling good about my progress so far!

Hi Everyone! I am new to sparkpeople, but not horribly new to running. I've been a runner in the past, but not a good solid runner. I am working on doing that though!

Looking forward to relearning how to run, and having fun with it!

Week one is going well so far, I have the last day tomorrow and I am trying to stay positive. Those 3 minute sessions were tough, so going up to 4 in week two is going to push me to my limit. I am excited about seeing the results of all this work though! For anyone who might be struggling, I found this link to be very useful and plan on putting it into practice tomorrow: www.runnersworld.com/race-training/painful

I completed Week 1 Day 1 yesterday. It was pretty tough going. I've not ran for about a month, and boy did I feel it! It was also freezing cold, so that added to the struggle. I almost gave up towards the end, but I pushed through and finished it all!

Yes, I can really do the hula hoop - but it's a weighted hoop, quite different to the light plastic hoops we had as children - I bet you could do it with a proper hoop :D
I just went out and did a Week2 Day 3 run by mistake! Got the Week 2 email and had it in my head that I had to Jog 4 and Walk 1 x 8! Did it though!

Hi rogan - that's brilliant! I've been noticing more runners now I'm doing it - and am often amazed to meet them coming back the other way again - but realised that I am one of them now too! How lovely to get that encouragement!

Week 1 - just done Week 1 Day 1 run - it was much harder just having 1 minute for recovery - and the first two cycles were hardest - after that it got easier. I'm getting hot now when I jog (so working harder) and am going to have to get some proper workout gear!

It's great to love what you're doing. Everything is so much easier that way! Stay strong, stick to the plan, and most importantly, listen to your body! When I first started running, I didn't and got into serious trouble. I have to watch myself right now as I have a knee issue I have to resolve. Train well, and prevent injury!

I stuck with the program for the first few weeks and then I had that same feeling that I could keep going and I did. Don't push too hard at the beginning though. I remember starting out it seemed easy and then I went thru a stage where it was much more difficult and I thought it should've been getting easier, but that's the way running goes. You have good runs and not so good runs.

The big thing is that you are enjoying the run! I think that is huge! You're off to a great start. Remember that the program builds your endurance and gets your body acclimated to the run. The distance will only get easier.

When you do your training for week 1, come by this thread and tell us about your accomplishments for the day.
(Example)
How far did you walk?
How did you feel on the day you did it?
Or anything else you want to talk about for your 5k training for week 1
