I am so excited to get to know all of you. Just signed up for my first week's training. That will teach that turkey a lesson. I just graduated from the walk/ run interval training group and I sure hope I can do this.
Happy Thanksgiving runners.

Just finished off week 1 yesterday. Even with proper socks I still started to get a few hot spots while running but I was able to finish all 36 minutes and a total of 3.5 miles. Not bad! Will start week 2 possibly on Saturday or Monday depending on the weekend plans.

RUNMOMRUN2, it's gotta be a great motivator to be running in a race with DH...we don't have any local races in the end of October so my virtual 5k is going to have to stay that way.

Good luck! I wore bad socks yesterday during my run and I got a blister...ouch! I'm taking the day off from running today and I'm going to hit the elliptical instead. Hopefully by Thursday I'll be good to go again!

Did week 1 day 2 yesterday.
I have a history of blisters on my feet so I have special inserts in my shoes, I tape my feet, I use an athletic lubricant, and wear special socks when running. Yesterday I forgot to pack the correct socks. I had to stop doing the running intervals after about 25 minutes and decided to just increase my incline and walk as fast as possible up hill for the remaining "running" intervals. I ended up doing 3.1 miles in 33 minutes.
It was still a hard workout and didn't mess up my feet as much as running would have. It's so frustrating to have to stop running for reasons other than muscle or cardiovascular fatigue!! I will not be forgetting my socks on Wednesday when I do day 3!!

I just completed week 1 day 1. I've been running on and off since high school so I was feeling pretty confident. Completed 3.2 miles in 32 minutes with walking for 1 minute and running for 3 minutes. I am really hoping to break 30 minutes when I run the 5k. I have a feeling that will definitely be obtainable if I keep up the training.

Where is everyone else in their training?

I really love my Nike + stuff. Of course you have to have Nike + shoes, the little disk thingie your your left shoe and a free app. I also love my heart rate monitor with GPS. There are several music sites that let you pick out music based on your speed or beets per minute. I like Jog FM. It lets you map your course as well. I ran a search on line and then on the app store site. There are an amazing number of things to help. Runner's World has a great web site with all kinds of things. Hope you find some that work well for you! Good luck this week!

Hi!
So I'm starting this and all.. Kind of not sure how it's going to start out, but a motivational website (couch to 5k) said to book the date. Even though it's not a "real" one I "really" want to make it. Later this year my college is having a real one, I don't know though. Do you normally do your other work outs when training? Oh and, how do other people keep track of the time? I have an ipod - is there an app for that?

Great job everyone! I'm trying to pick up my time a bit. I ran the treadmill instead of outside the other day and managed to make it a 12 min mile instead of the 13.5-14 min mile I had been doing!!

Way to go ERRICKER! I had a reduction 30 years ago and had a lift done last year. (Gravity sucks!) I still remeber how the surgery last year put me off my "game" as far as exercise goes. It took several months for me to get back to wherre I was. I just kept plugging along until I finally got there. You will get there too! Just do what your body (not your brain) tells you and you will be fine. Good luck with week 2. I star week 4 tomorrow!

Just completed, sort of, day 3 of week 1. I didn't realize until I came on sparkpeople to track my minutes that I was supposed to do another repeat of the walk/run, so I did the same as day 1 & 2. :(

I ended up going around 2.6 miles each day, which is about two loops around my rather large block that I live on. The first day I didn't do as well, because there's a really big hill on my street and that knocked me out for about a minute, but I was able to push through the rest of the days!

I'm still recovering from a breast reduction surgery I had this summer, so my main focus for this plan is just to make it through it. I plan to work on speed/mileage later!

It is normal to feel discomfort after you run for the first time. I would recommend that you take tomorrow to do a differant workout, then do your run Saturday! Gives your muscles a chance to heal! You actually tare your muscles when you work them, so the healing proccess of that is the pain you feel! Only good part of the pain is you build muscle mass and you burn more calories that way! Good luck! Congrats on your choice to run!

This journey will only take me as far as I allow it!

Hi!
I did first 2 days of week 1, and it was fine: I ran slowly and relaxed, and did not get exhausted.
Loved it : )
But next morning I felt like I was beaten: knee and back pain, sore muscles all over my body.
I hope this will go away, because I just bought good running shoes.
Anyway, I'm doing day 3 tomorrow morning.

Funny how that works, huh?!? Way to go. I always feel better when the scale is reporting good news. I have learned not to feel too bad when it isn't good. It is usually my own fault so I just get back up and keep going. That is one of the things that made me want to try this running thing!!!! Have a great rest of your week!!!!!!!!

Thanks! I need all the support I can get. I've eaten better today, so I feel a LOT better this morning... found out I've lost 10 lbs in 2 months! So exciting! Funny, though, I only feel like I have more energy, not that I've lost 10 lbs.

One step at a time, one bite at a time. I'm getting through this the right way and setting reasonable expectations.

Finished 5K rookie, and also finished Day one of normal 5k... Got 1/2 way through and blamed the moon for the extra gravity (or the pizza right before a run- I know, it was dumb of me). Making smarter decisions for day 2.

Just finished my day 3 of week1 and I feel great! I am doing it on my treadmill. I have never felt comfortable enough to run outside. I walk outside all the time. I have some sort of a block on the run thing though. That is one of the reasons I signed up. My goal is to run the entire 5k distance outside at the big park near my house. Provided that goes well the sky is the limit! Tomorrow I should cross train (Coach Nicole's Cardio Blast) but I am enjoying the run thing so much I wish I could do it. I know cross training is the best way to train though so I will run again on Tuesday. That will be day 1 of week 2. Good luck to all of us!

Did my run outdoors in the park this morning. Beautiful perfect weather: sunny but slightly windy. I haven't run outdoors in almost a year; I love the treadmill, but people say it's easier and blah blah blah. So wanted a new challenge.
Totally surprised myself....I did the 1 min walk, 3 min jog thing for 32 mins and managed (somehow) to do 2.98 miles and I absolutely loved it. The last 2 sets were really hard, but I just kept going. Had my music playing and I just went for it. Looking forward to my next one and beating my miles! :)

Finished Day 2 Week 1. It felt great. I found myself thinking Boston Marathon!!! HaHaHa! That has been my issue with running in the past. For some reason I think I need to skip ahead which of course would probably kill me, dead. The Boston Marathon? Really? I have lost what is left of my mind! ;-) So I am sticking with the training schedule I joined. Walk 1 minute, run 3 minutes, repeat 7 times. It really did feel great this morning. I did the SP meeting on LiveMind at 7A and ate some breakfast (egg beaters and Canadian bacon). Next thing I knew I was almost finished with the run! How cool is that. I were a Body Media Fit armband and I love the increase calorie burn when I run!!!! I just need to stick with the program no ad libs! BTW, I highly recommend the new meetings on LiveMind. They are fantastic and fun. I don't even have a web cam or mike but I participate in the chat room. You guys should sign up for the free week and try it!

Edited to change content - posted in wrong thread first time.

I'm thinking about signing up for the Trick or Treat Trot. I probably will, but first I need to map out a 5K route from home that I can tell where the finish line is. To date, I've been training by running for however long I'm supposed to, and mapping the distance covered when I get home.

Great job everyone on your training. Last night I did the first day and felt great when I was done. I can't lie, I wanted to keep stopping because I thought I couldn't do it, but kept going. Deep down I knew I could finish. I have done a few 5k's, half marathons and a 10 miler, but I walk/ran them. I would love to run this entire 5k and at least half of the half marathon I'm doing in November. Awesome job to everyone out there!! Keep it up!

Goodluck Kris, running is really hard at the start but do it regularly and it will just click one day. There is a training programme that goes with this 5k that's walk/run you should start that for some goals and help you make your 5k on race day.

I just got back from my run/walk outdoors. I set a goal of one mile to start today since I already worked out earlier and I did 1.25 miles in 25 mins. I feel accomplished, yet worried because it is sooo much harder for me than the elliptical. I am going to keep pushing and try to do 1.25 miles again tomorrow only faster. (I'm still going to do elliptical too.) Wish me luck, I think I'm really going to need it to be able to do the 5k.

Getting out the door if sometimes the hardest part of the training. I sometimes have to force myself to just go and do it. I make my Husband watch my kids as well.

Just give it a go!!!

I just finished week one training. I feel so proud of myself. I wasn't sure I could do it!

I felt like giving up a few times and I pushed myself. It is really hard to keep going. I have to find my inner motivation.

Friday - Day 1: 32 mins, 2.66 miles (treadmill)
Sunday - Day 2: 32 mins, 2.37 miles (outside)

I felt SO GOOD after the run last night (day 2). It's a change for me to relax all day then go out at night... I normally hit the treadmill right after work in the afternoon.

I feel like I'm already at that point that I want to run for longer than 3 minutes at a time... but then I walk, and I barely catch my breath before I run again. But it feels so good.

Last night, I ran by a fire station, and I wanted to call out to the guys--- look, I'm running! haha... I didn't, they weren't even outside or around. I was just so proud of myself.

Yes, I ran faster on the treadmill, but that's predictable. The fact that I'm doing 2.3 in 32 minutes right now though (13.3 miles/hour), means that I should be GOLDEN by the time this training is done. Hopefully around 10.5 miles/hour if I run the whole thing. That'd be awesome.

I plan on my non-training day to pace out a 3.1 route and see how long it takes. That'll help me track/plan/mentally motivate myself.

Good luck, everyone! :)

Oh i totally didn't read your first post properly sorry!! I'm a stay at home mum of three little ones too but im lucky enough to have my own treadmill, i would totally recommend buying one if you wanna start running, it's so worth the money. Before i had my own i used to have to wait till my husband was home from work and everyone was tucked up in bed, it was hard work because by that time of night you know how tired you are!!! Goodluck with your work outs.

I am a stay-at-home mother of three young ones, and I don't have a treadmill so the elliptical is really the only option I have at this time. I guess I can still do the workouts in the plan but I am kind of disappointed that I'm not going to be able to actually do the 5k.

@CHRISSY121285 My elliptical has a 12" stride, and it takes 2 strides for one revolution. I did 1747 revolutions, or 3494 feet. Divide that by 5280 feet for a mile, and I get .6617 miles. I just shortened it to .66 I did work out very hard, I sweat buckets every time I use the elliptical and my usual workout averages 1 hr a day.

Hi Kris, I first want to congratulate you on deciding to do a 5k! That's great, In my NON EXPERT oppion, I don't really think it's the same kind of thing to run a 5k and to do 5k on the elliptical. Honestly it's like comparing apples & oranges. Yes with the elliptical you are moving your feet, but that is more like riding a bike than running/walking.. Do you have access to a treadmill? Or outside?

Do you have a medical reason why you can't walk/run to train? If that's the case then by all means I say yes go for using the elliptical, just keep in mind it's not the same, and while doing 3 miles on the elliptical is a great accomplishment, you technically wouldn't have ran/walked a 5k.

HUGS!

Are you sure you worked it out properly Kris? I'm using a running machine for mine and in my 32 mins on week one i'm doing about three miles with the stop start programme. 0.66 of a mile can't be right surely? espeshally if you felt you'd really pushed yourself?

Hi my name is Kris, and I was wondering if its okay to use an elliptical to do this. I did the day one training. After I calculated the revolutions to miles I had only gone .66 miles in the 32 minutes. My elliptical has a very small stride, just 12". Is this going to make it very difficult for me to complete the 5k in a timely manner? I felt as if I were pushing myself as hard as I could in the 32 minutes and was kind of shocked to see that I only went .66 miles.

Great job Kimmie!! You're doing great! If you're at a 12 min mile on day one you will for sure pass the 34 mins by the end of training!!

Hugs!

day one today, the first half was easier than the second, lol, but I made it through! I averaged a 12 minute mile, which I am proud of, especially since I haven't run in almost a year, and my last 5K I didn't even train for! I am hoping to beat my last 5K time of 37:12 and my dream goal is to get cose to 34 minutes, which was my time for the 5K I did 2 years ago, which we did train for. Running without a partner is tough, but at the same time I felt more focused than usual!

Yesterday was Day 1 for me. I printed out the plan and headed to the gym.

I did 40 minutes as well......Just like Krystie!

I wanted to quit as well. I was tempted to just hit stop on the treadmill and take a break.
I didn't though. I push myself and kept going. I feel so proud.

I think I did about 2.5 miles. I wasn't paying attention..ooops.

Today was Day 1 for my running program

I followed the plan, and was able to get 2.85 miles done in 40 mins.

Around the 20 min mark, I wanted to just quit and walk but I pushed through and managed to finish . YAY!

Hugs!
