Completed my walk/jog training Week1 day2 last night and increased my milage in the same 32 minutes (from 2.7 to 2.8), that's always nice. I can already feel myself being able to pull my weight forward a little better. I ususally jog on and off but usually stop after running 2 miles, so this is a new experience for me.

It's really encouraging to see everyone who participates! Thanks for motivating me!

Mommabooms - Hope your knee feels better, those type of injuries are never fun :(

Hi everyone!
I got in 2 of 3 runs this week - one was a 3k race and the second a training run; again 3k which we ran straight... 1.87miles in 20:24. We walked an additional 2k home from there. It was GREAT.
Very jealous of how quickly my husband has caught on - I've been running on and off for 3 years - him for 3 months and we are close to being on even footing. Hmmm....
Oh well - we are doing it together!

Happy Saturday, today I got in 2.56 miles in 33 minutes, not fast, but I ran the whole time so that makes me happy! Mission accomplished today! emoticon

And for sure it's not how fast you go, it's getting going that counts when you start out! Keep up the good work!

Wow, I'm slooooow! (just looked at everyone else's stats)
W1D1 I did 1.9 miles in 31:05 (misread instructions and was short one set)
W1D2 was rough. Ran 1.82 miles in 32:45.
Re-did W1D2 today and improved a bit. 1.91 miles in 32:50. Still slow, but no cheating on the running 3 minutes this time! (Although my 8 year old walked it and kept up with my jogging!!)
Will do Day 3 on Saturday.

Finished week one today and did 2.8 miles in 36 minutes. With my cool down I did a little over 5K. I really struggled today and even though I did it, I'm not feeling so confident about upping the jogging intervals. I was slower today and having trouble regulating my breathing. I haven't been eating as well as I should and think that may have something to do with the way I felt today. I'll clean up my eating plan and get back on track. That should help.

Today was the cross training day but yesterday I did 1.75 miles in 32 minutes over the trails and then walked with hubby for over 2 miles. So far, I am at least getting cardio/run on the 3 days and exercise/ST on the other 3!

ending my 1st week. Sadly, I gained 2 1/2 lbs! Im sure it's stress related. I didn't get to do my program. I went out of town for a fund raiser for my daughter. Tomorrow...well, i won't have any excuse tomorrow! I'll have plenty of time to do it before work.

Week 1 Day 1 - 2.6 miles in 32 minutes.

I actually went 3.2 miles in 44 minutes with my cool down walk. This is the best running I have ever done I think. And I walked part of it! (You know every fourth minute)

It felt amazing! Today was my first day in week 1. I did my work out early in the morning and it gave me a boost till the end of the day. emoticon
Plus, it swept my appetite; the desire to eat mindlessly has decreased immensely.
Hope you all did great on your first week!! emoticon

Completed Week 1 Day 1 yesterday.
Used my Droid app HIIT (high intensity interval training) timer and put in 1 minute "rest" walks and 3 minute "work" jogs for 7 rounds. Also running was my Endomondo tracker which uses GPS to track your mileage. I recommend both Apps. At the end of my 33 minutes I jogged 2.53 miles.
Towards the end the 3 minutes felt longer, but I stayed on point the entire time. I'm proud of day 1, I just hope that I do actually progress enough to do a personal 5K!

Week 1 day 2 done! I have no idea how far I ran (don't laugh, but circles in my basement), but I successfully completed the 1 min walk 3 min run cycles... I think listening to music helps a lot. Day 2 was a lot easier than day 1!

I am returning to running after a (way too long) break

Week 1/Day 1 - Accidentally did 4/1 run/walk instead of 3/1 so ended up doing 7 intervals for a total of 35 minutes...close to 3 miles. Nice crisp winter day..felt good

WildnTexas the hunters and outdoorsmen have a baseball type hat and it already has a small light across the bib attached to it. it is very light, weighing about 3 or 4 ounces but is very bright. It works well and is more comfortable than carrying a light so it won't mess up your stride. They are at Walmart, the Academy, or most places hunters go and will help make you more visible to traffic too. I love mine.

Completed Week 1 day 1 with a 20 minute warm up and a 20 minute cool down. It has been raining cats and dogs here for 3 days so had to do it on the treadmill so it was a nice steady pace. Feels good. My 5k is Saturday so am trying not to push it too hard this week.

I just completed W1D1. I did it on a treadmill, and definitely went much slower than I used to run before my knee injury, but it felt great! I think my walking was probably too slow, so next time I will walk a bit faster. Overall, though it was fantastic!! I completed 2.4 miles and I am pretty happy about it :)

completed week 1, day 2. It was in the lower 50s, windy, and got dark about 1/2 way through my run. My time was about 5 minutes slower than my usual, but I'm not too concerned. I'm just proud that I went out and completed it, despite how tired I was, the weather conditions, and the light. Note to self, next time remember a flashlight.

update: 11/18 completed week 1. still having flashlight issues despite taking one with me. My time was up a bit, but I feel like I could have done so much better if I hadn't had to slow down due to fear of tripping on the uneven sidewalks

Tuesday - rest (kettlebell)
Wednesday - Week1: Day 2 - 3.19 miles
Thursday - rest (ST)

Last week I was working on C25K week 5, and jogging 8 minute intervals. This week since I'm starting the Running program I'm doing 1 minute walk and 3 minute jogs for 9 repetitions all 3 days. My time today was 3.1 in 40:45. I started off running, really running (10min/mi), during the first 3 minute (after a 5 minute warm up and the 1 minute walk). I loved it! I started slowing down about 1/2 way through.

I was tired from the weekends events before trying it, but knew I wouldn't make my 3 days if I didn't.

I just finished day 2 of the 5k your way plan! I didn't start off as fast this time and I pretty much went the same distance. I wasstill hurting though. There are a lot of hills where I run my made up track so it goes up and down a lot. I definatly hate the up part. Oh well still feeling great and will do day 3 on tuesday. Definatly finding that running everyother day is better then every day. Have a great one!

Week 1, Day 3: 36 minutes, 4.36 miles

Overcast, 63 degrees, not excessively humid. The sun peeked through a hole in the western clouds as I was stretching in my driveway after the walk/run. Early in the training, I tried to run as if I planned to run 30 minutes solid, but force myself to slow to a walk after 3 minutes. That helped, but I don't know whether I could have gone another cycle for 40 total minutes.

Week 1, Day 2: 32 minutes, 3.89 miles

I got a little further than Day 1, which surprised me because I was making an effort to not run as fast as I wanted during the early part of the training. The route was the same, just added a little distance on the end to use up the leftover time.

I could have kept running longer than three minutes for most of the cycles, but the good news is that I was able to not check the time until over a minute into the 3. 1:20 was the earliest I looked at my watch during a 3 minute run.

I just started this yesterday (9/5/11). I don't run as fast as some I see on here but I am happy with my first day's progress. For a long while I have been struggling to run 3 - 4 min and then walk 2 min. Yesterday I warmed up for 5 min then ran for 3 min, walked for 1 min (6 times). My top speed is only 4.4 mph, total distance right at 2.0 miles in 31 min.

I have found when I ran before that I really get winded if I run much faster than 4.5 mph. Hopefully as I take the weight off this time, I will be able to speed up some.

Week 1~ Day 1: 32 minutes *2.414 miles!

I was a lil winded but I hung in there:) The walking 1 minute helped to me catch my breath after the 3 minutes of straight running. Before starting training I was focusing more on the distance rather than the time and noticed I was more winded when doing that. Overall, it was a successful day and I pat my self on the back! emoticon

Week 1, Day 1: 32 minutes, 3.81 miles.

Yesterday I crapped out on an early morning walk/run in high humidity but reasonable temperature. Ended up spending most of the day in a/c and letting my body rest. This morning, my calves were telling me a walk/run before breakfast was Not A Good Idea.

But I felt better after church and lunch, and it was overcast. Not quite as humid as yesterday, cooler than yesterday afternoon's heat but warmer than yesterday morning. I made a point to run slower so as to be able to keep running the full 3 minutes eight times. Got that done, but it was close enough that I'll need to consciously limit my speed on the early 3 minute runs next training day.

I've always struggled with pacing myself, and hope to learn to do it better as part of this challenge.

I'm at a hotel and last night I had the fitness center to myself and I really enjoyed it. I did about 30 minutes on the balance ball then 45 on the treadmill. Ran 4 minutes then walked 1, then a few times I'd set random goals- run for the next 10 minutes, run til you get to 2.8 miles, etc and I finished 3.2 miles in about 40 minutes. Added a 5 minute cool down. I'm only running (jogging?) at 5mph but I'll work on speed later. For now it's about being consistent and increasing the challenge. After just a couple weeks of consistent exercise I can see my endurance improving. I missed my home treadmill though, its deck is much springier and I felt the difference in my knees last night. No biggie, not gonna let that stop me.

I finished W1D2 last night. I felt ok?? I warmed up for 5 min and then got into it. I do not know my pace as I am running outside. I do have a heart rate mon so that helps figure calories and max heart rate. I had a tiring day so the running was hard- hard to get into, hard to go 3 min, just hard. By the end though, my body kicked in and finally wanted to play along :) By then, it was getting dark so enough was enough... until Sat :)

I estimated about a 2.7 mile run...

Unless you are running with a heart rate monitor and know your target heart rates and training zones, it's hard to determine how many calories you are burning during exercise. It definitely varies according to your weight and fitness level. Anytime you are doing something new, you burn more calories because you are not working as efficiently as you would if you are accustomed to the exercise.

A general rule is that a 150 pound person burns 100 calories per mile.

Today I'll do W1D2. W1D1 was a challenge because I was jogging at 5mph instead of my usual 4.5-4.7. I was sweaty and stinky afterward but other than that it was okay. I was really proud of my 2.64 miles and according to my treadmill I burned a good 340 calories. I felt like I burned 340 cals but when I entered my distance into the tracker it gave me a measly "walk 15 min/mile" rating for approx. 250 calories. I changed that to reflect the number on the treadmill. Well numbers are just numbers anyway and it's all about trying your best during the run right?

You can do both! If it's very hot and humid, you will probably have a more enjoyable run indoors on the treadmill. Just make sure you set the incline to between 1-2% in order to better mimic the resistence you get outside.

If you can get up early or run in the evening, it will be a nice treat to get outside and enjoy the scenery.

Mixing things up is a great way to stay motivated!

I want to get back to running 5k after just 8 months ago I used to do 6-7k.
At this point I can do 4km in 30 mins at 8kmph on the treadmill at the gym.
I guess what I'm asking is, should I do this program outside like when I used to do the long distance jogs or do it at the gym - which is more convenient air conditioning and hydration wise, as opposed to the feeling of freedom I get while doing the same distance at my own pace in the open fields? It's certainly a different experience.

I did W1D1 a couple days ago, with an estimated distance of 2.1 miles. I completed the Rookie Running program a while back, and then didn't run for about 3 weeks. I was surprised by how tough it was to get back into it.

I did finish, but I took a five minute walk halfway through. I was also running outside, which was tough because I did most of my first program on the treadmill. But I'm committed to transitioning to outside running now that the weather is awesome!

Today was my Day #3 W1 run. I did complete it, but I was hoping for better...did 2.95 miles. I did a good strength workout yesterday, and my quads and butt were pretty tight, but half mile into my run, my muscles started loosening and they felt better, though they were still a bit tight. Even on my cooldown walk back, I still felt some tightness. But tomorrow is my REST day, so I'll be ready to go with Week #2 on Saturday. I am excited to be going into Week 2 though. I LOVE TO RUN! I just found a 5k run here on July 17, so I am going to register for it. I'd like to find something earlier around June, after I complete this program, but if I cant, I'll continue using this program until July 17.

Wow! Duffyzmom, you're fast! I'm hoping to break 3 miles in my next run!

Goddess_sam, You've got as much time as you need before you do the 4 minute runs. I'm a little nervous about them, myself.

I was planning to run tonight because my music lesson was cancelled, and it's my "night out". So if I go for a run before I go out and have a little quiet ME time, then I can run the 4 minutes without the jog stroller. My shoulders are really feeling it from yesterday's run!

LOL!! On Day 1 (yesterday) I actually did 4 minutes of jogging (instead of 3) with the 1 minute of walking (after a 5 minute warmup first of course). Needless to say, I did not finish. I did only 3 sequences. When I got home, I looked at the program calendar again, and saw my mistake. Tomorrow I will do it according to the program, and am sure I will finish the workout.

At least, when I got home and saw what I did wrong, I got to stop beating myself up for not finishing, and laugh it off. Pretty hilarious. I may repeat Week 1 again next week, depending on how I feel about my 3rd run this week.

Did just about 3.5 miles today in 50 minutes. Actually last half mile was slow cool down as I ran into a neighbor walking her dog so we had a nice chat. Run#2 was definitely more of a struggle than run #1 but still manageable.

K9Claudia, I feel like I decrease distance with each run. I've had a lot of tightness in my legs that feels more substantial with each run (more restrictive), but I've been doing the yoga for runners (http://www.dailyspark.com/blog.asp?post=1
3_yoga_poses_to_help_runners_and_other
_athletes) and it's helping a LOT. I also had a lot of respiratory things when I first started Couch 2 5k about two years ago. But as I've run more and more, it's gotten a lot better. I think it's improving as my heart rate doesn't max out as high and my recovery time is shortening. :)

Did anyone else run today?

Just finished my Week #1 Day #2 run. At the beginning, my legs felt real heavy, but I pushed through it, and started feeling stronger about 3-4 minutes into the run. I did run about 150 feet short of what I ran on Day #1, but that's OK. Even though I did feel more tired today, I felt as if I could've gone more, which I know is good, as next run will add another interval. I am feeling benefits though; I usually have been coughing up stuff at the end of my runs, but today...NOTHING! I got my Camelbak out and cleaned up, so that I can have water on my runs. After my run was over, I walked 3/4 mile for my cooldown, and really wanted water. I dont like carrying a water bottle (or anything else) when I run, so I thought my Camelbak would be perfect....will also give me a bit more weight on my run :)

I did my third run this morning with a jog stroller and 33 pound toddler in there trying to psych me out. Usually he's very encouraging, but this time he was doing the beep sounds of my Garmin for the walking segments throughout my runs. What a stinker! We saw baby ducklings and a red tail hawk, though!

Overall it was 2.66 miles and 44 minutes. I had to pause to do longer walks because the stroller really made a tougher workout, but I'm still very glad I did it!!! I'll start week 2 thursday, maybe in the evening without the stroller. :)

I am about to start Week 1 (tomorrow). I am excited (& scared half to death). I completed the Walk/Jog program a couple weeks ago before doing the Warrior Dash. Starting out was super tough for me, but by the 5th week, I was doing great! This program seems quite a bit tougher though... yikes! I am committed to running the 8mile Turkey Trot this November so... HERE WE GO! Any and all support is, of course, so greatly appreciated!

Thanks! I completed ran a third day today, but forgot to add the extra run. I am thinking about hanging here for another run or two in order to work out some tightness before moving on to week 2. So far I'm liking this program and enjoying getting back to running!

I have only been running this week. Monday I ran/walked about 2.5 miles and today I ran/walked 2.75miles. It's been tough, but I'm just so glad that I'm on vacation and still tracking my food and running!

Excellent! You have to start somewhere, and it WILL start to get better! Repeat week 1 if you don't feel ready to move on!

Done with week one! Ugh. I thought this was supposed get easier as I went. Not. I think it took 40 minutes for my face to return to normal color after I completed Day 3 this morning. :)

Just do it!

Finished Week 1. got sick of the gym and did the last two workouts at the park. Now I know why I was criticized for calling using the dreadmill 'running'. WOW! Outside is Real sweat compared to what you do in the gym!!

Done with week one!!! emoticon I completed 3.1 miles running 5.5 and walking 4.1 (last interval I walked 4.2). With my 5 min cooldown walk added in, I finished with 3.5 miles in 42 minutes.

I'm really happy to have accomplished week 1. I am really excited about this program and to see how much I can progress by the end of it.

Thank you Spark People for this program, this website and this wonderful community!! emoticon

Just finished Week 1 Day 2. I completed 2.8 miles doing 4.1walk, 5.4 run for 2 intervals then 5.5 for the remaining run intervals. I feel pretty good and think that 5.5 is a better pace for me. But I'll probably increase it a few notches next week. With my warm up and cool down added in, I did 3.2 miles in 44 minutes.

Finished Day 2 today. I couldn't remember the program for D2 and ended up jumping the gun, walking 1, running 4. The first set was tough, but it seemed to get easier after that. (Although, I have to say, that 1 minute walking sure went by FAST)!
