Finished my first real 5K race today!

Was a small event, just 40 people, the sun was shining but a very strong head wind seeing as we where running along the beach front.

It was the first time I had run with a "crowd", used to just 4 of us running together on our practise days.

Even with the strong wind on the first half, and suffering from hip bursitis, ouch, I managed to reach my goal in finishing in under 30 minutes at 29.20...woohoo.

Hope my hip holds out as next week is a 5 MILE run and about 1000 people are expected!

I only started running for real 7 weeks ago, always said I was not a runner...but now I am hooked!

I finally finished and did my 5k. It was tough and I had to walk a few times. I had a stretch where I was able to run for 12 minutes but that was the longest. It took me 38 minutes and it was the hardest thing I have done physically in a very long time. GLAD I DID IT!!!!

It really doesn't matter how many weeks it takes you to finish. The whole program is really just a guideline.

It took me longer than I planned (due to family emerg.) but I started week 8 today. day1week8 done. I was very discouraged with myself today. I looked back at when I started day1week1 was 2/13. Then I remembered that due to medical stuff I did have to take 1 week off. Unexpected life stuff slowed down another week. Then I thought to myself. OK your on week 8 and it took you 10 weeks to get here SO WHAT, your here.

I completed my 5K almost a week ago with a time of 43:24! I too was nervous at the thought of going from having walking intervals to no intervals at all, but I wanted to give it my best shot. I ended up jogging for over 2 miles before I had to walk, which was the farthest distance I'd ever gone without stopping. I was briefly disappointed that I couldn't run the entire way, but I thought about how far I'd come in eight weeks and was SO proud of myself!

So you can all do it too! Intervals are absolutely okay, and I guarantee you that as long as you finish, you will be happy! I know we'll all be proud of you.

I'm actually joining a second race at the end of May with a group of people from another of my SparkTeams, so I will be moving over to the 5K Running plan next. I'll check in from time to time to see how everyone's doing and encourage you all! Keep it up, you can do it!

I am so glad that I read this thread. I was feeling the same way. How will I do this without my walking breaks? I realized it is taking me longer to get through these last two weeks because I am afraid of this week. I was worried that I would not be able to run day 3 week 8 without walking. Tomorrow I will start week 8.

SHEDOBEN- You may want to check that half marathon... they often have 5K's at the same time. They aren't as advertised because the event revolves around the half, but more and more often, they offer 5K's and sometimes family run/walk events too.

I was talking about doing intervals with my brother today. He said his business partner ran a marathon using 4/1intervals--same as Suezette said. He actually got a better time by running hard and then having the walk intervals than he did when running the whole thing. So it's not a failure--it's a race strategy!!

I will be running my first 5K this Sunday and I am certainly going to need to do intervals. As it is I hit week 8 and got half way throught day one and had to go back to 3:1 intervals as my heart rate was getting too high. ( I wear a heart rate monitor). I felt like a bit of a failure at first but I gave it some thought and figure I am only a failure if I let that discourage me. I will run my 3:1 intervals for another week or two and try 4:1 again later.

Thank you all for having this discussion. I am just starting wk7 and have been wondering how I am supposed to run 5k. I am thankful for this challenge as running is getting easier and my form is becoming more natural but I think I'll have to add another few weeks to the program before I sign up for a 5k. Or not. I really want to try one.

Well, I did W8D1 today, and it went fine. I am still doing the 1 minute walk, 4 minutes run intervals on the treadmill. Distance was 3 miles today.

My knees were twingy because of the weather--rain/snow mix and windy, so now I am wishing for ice on my right knee. Hope the weather improves before the race on Saturday.

I am so impressed with those of you who are running without the walk breaks! I can't imagine that I'll be able to do that this Saturday, but I've felt that way with every new step in this program. I guess I'll just keep going!

Once you get into the longer endurance runs, you will notice that any training plan will tell you to run 1 minute to 90 seconds SLOWER then your 5k or 10k race pace.

So, yes, the further you run, the slower you will go. The purpose of LSD runs (Long Slow Distance) is to build your endurance.

I went from struggling to complete my first minute of running, to running 2 miles and walking the rest, to running the 5k and now I'm running 5+ miles. Granted the further I run the slower I go until I'm not going much past a fast walk...but it is still running. Don't give up, everyone progresses differently and you WILL get there.

I actually did my first week 8 run with 2 x 10 min runs then a final 12 min run...I was on a good running groove and thought I had better not lose it. So I just ran, it felt so doable! We can definitely do this girls!

And Before50DP...I was almost thinking that after this week 8 is done, I might go and do the 5 week SP running program. It's very similar to where we are at now, you should take a look!

For me, I'm doing the Virtual race on the week of the 10th, but then there is nothing even remotely close to my town except for a HM, that I really am not ready for. They put it on the same day as our local annual MS Walk, which I might do that 10K and run parts of it with my mom. So I was kind of bummed that I don't really have a race to do. So instead I used the fitness maps here on SP and I've pathed out 5 different routes that I can take around town that are more or less 5K and I will just time myself for those! Maybe even convince a few friends to join me! :)

You can run/walk it. Most times I run the entire 5k. But if I'm having a bad run, bad day, whatever, I have no problems taking walk breaks.

I did my entire marathon (26.2 miles) using 3:1 intervals. Yes, they got tough at the end. But I continued on.

I agree with you. I'm on Week 7 and having a hard time believing I'll be ready to run a whole 5K after Week 8. I'm okay with the idea of walking part of it, but I don't want to feel like a failure if I SHOULD be able to run it and can't.

Do people actually go from 4 minutes to 35 or 40 minutes without stopping when they complete week 8?

I am on week 8 but I don't see myself just running 3.1 miles without rest periods magically. I feel the program should be going to 1 minute/5 minutes, unless at the end of week 8 something magical is going to happen. Still waiting for the runners high to kick in. I want it to be easier and natural sooon. Pushing it, pushing it....I need some spark endorphins.

Nicole Can there be a Week 9 and Beyond post to show where people go the following week so we know. Plus I like logging in that I did my three times it motivates me to get out and do it within the week time frame.
