W3D1 completed yesterday. There's a VERY hilly 5K loop near us that I run, and it took me 40 minutes last night. Better than the 45 minutes it was taking me 2 weeks ago, but I'd still like to get the time down to 35 minutes.

On the flat parts I had no trouble with the running, but the hills were killer!

Today is a rest day (well, power yoga, so still getting a workout in!), and I think I might be skipping Friday too because of my schedule. looks like I'll be running on saturday morning next!

Thanks for the input and guidance! I will say, my pace was quite a bit slower on the second day. down from a 12 minute mile to 14...

As a beginner, I would have to say yes, but everyone is different. If you are going to run back to back days, listen closely to your body.

Suzette, is it important to do the every other day pattern or just give yourself downtime from running? There are times I need to do back to back days of running because of my schedule. Like this week I ran Sun & Mon, and plan to run Wed & early thurs, because we are leaving for camping. The rest of the week will be hiking, swimming, canoeing. I wanted to get Week 3 workouts in before I left.

As a beginner runner, you should not run every day. Your body needs time to become accustomed to the stress of running. Every other day do cross training such as walking, elliptical, biking, swimming, strength training, etc.

The days you don't run are the days your body rebuilds and recovers. That is why rest days are so important!

(sorry I didn't respond sooner as I was out of town for the week with no internet.)

i'm starting week 3 tomorrow. I was wondering, i know that i dont HAVE to run every day, but CAN i run every day if i want to? i mean, i take days off, but i don't like to take days off every other day because i am having so much fun running. sometimes i run in the morning and then by the evening i want to run again! i really don't go that far each run, maybe 2 miles. is it going to physically hurt me to run every day as long as i'm not feeling any pain or discomfort?

I have never been much of a runner, but I want to be! I ran or slowed jogged, 3 miles one time......ever! Since I joined the 5K for beginners, I have been reading some of the articles on here. What I'm learning is it takes time to build up endurance and even more time to build up speed. During this 8 weeks I have decided not to worry about my speed. I just want to keep moving with my time increments. I figure if I can do the 5K straight through at the end of the 8 weeks, I will build up my speed overtime. One of these days or years, I'm going to run in a marathon or half a marathon. Keep up the good work!!!!

...tried to do day 1 of week 3. Didn't quite make it. I was pleased with what I accomplished but everytime it was time to do the 2 min. run I was going uphill!! Ugh. By the fourth hill, I just couldn't make it. I felt really good though, after the workout was done. I am not giving up!

Eventhough I'm on week 3 I have been repeating week 2 because I feel I need one more week on it.. Is that ok? should I still track it though the training program or just though my fitness tracker?

I finished W3D1 yesterday and surprisingly it was easier than I expected. It could be that I was on a high from my weigh-in that morning but I really enjoyed it! It seems as though exercising is contagious! My mother-in-law, who watches my daughter while my dh and I run, met us at the tow path and her and my daughter walked while we did our thing. My mil made it 2 miles! That is probably the most she has walked in years...and although today she said she is sore she also said she is looking forward to tomorrow to try it again!

Good luck to everyone else this week!

W3D3 in the books now. Had to run at 5:00 am because its been 90 degrees every day this week. running in the dark is kinda creepy. Anyway, I'm impressed as all heck I made it thru W3. Really dreading jumping up to 3 minutes running at a time. 2 minutes felt like it was killing me. I hope I don't have to do some interim thing like 2:30 minutes running. Oh well, onward.

Just completed week 3, day 2 and I feel pretty darn good. The jump up in intensity for week 3 was nowhere near as painful bad as week 1 to week 2. I'm dreading week 4 however.

I had to stop for about five days during week 3 as I was having some pretty strong pain on the outside bottom of my right foot. I finally bought some real running shoes so hopefully that will help. After wearing the new shoes and doing W3D2, my foot is sore but not extremely painful. I really want to run my first race on July 17 and I can't do that if I have to stop anymore. Wish me luck.

I've read that your feet swell when you run - maybe your shoes are to tight by the end of your run...

I just finished week 3 - I did great on days 1 and 2 but today I wasn't on my normal track and had a friend with me so I didn't have laps to help me keep track of time and I didn't watch the clock very well (my gymboss hasn't arrived yet.) So my walks in between were longer than 3 minutes and my jogs were a bit longer than 2. But I feel ready for week 4 and I think that's what matters.

Starting W3D1 tomorrow! I'm super excited! My last day of week 2 was yesterday, and it felt amazing! It feels like its getting a little easier. I walked 3 minutes, and than ran for 3 minutes. The next time was a 3:2 interval. I went back and forth. It felt wonderful when I was done. Might have to find another route though. I'm getting bored on mine and I usually reach my house before my time is up. I'm worried about going down to the trails here in town. I go out to run at 4:30 - 5:00 in the morning. I'll see how it goes tomorrow! yay!!!

THIN4_25, are you scrunching your shoulders up to your ears when you run? If so, try relaxing them. I notice that my shoulders will creep up to my ears little by little and I have to relax them.

See if you notice that happening the next time you run.

Tonight is going to be my W3D1. And I am a little nervous. I am following a program someone else had posted on here earlier, 90 seconds jog/walk, then 3 minutes jog/walk. 90 seconds I struggled with, so I am really nervous to turn it into 3 minutes. Mind over matter though, I got to keep telling myself that. Hope my Ipod charger is ready when I get home. Do guys have a special play list for running vs working out?

BEEBERS86- here is my uneducated guess. I was having alot of weird pain when i first started trying to run which did not seem to make sense. Finally I went to the podiatrist and found out that my left leg was longer and it had everything out of alignment which could make anything hurt. So I got orthodics and a lift in the right one and the "weird" pain stopped. I still have shin pain but nothing too bad. Good luck!

Just finished w3d2!!! Felt pretty good...a little bit of pain in my shins and calves, but mostly my shoulder hurt. I can't understand the shoulder pain and have asked on the message board, but no answers. It only hurts when I run and get out of breath...???

I doubled up on it as I had to go away for the weekend and knew I wouldn't have time for it.

Going to do W3D1 today. I'm a little worried about the 2 minutes. The minute & half seemed like a marathon! I'm on a tread mill & the clock is killing me! It is more my mind giving in, cause it seems to take so damn long. I try not to look down but its hard. The first 2 weeks I didn't fellow the C25k program and pushed myself doing a full 5k. I'm planning on following W3 today and see if it helps. I'll check in tomorrow and let you know how I did. My race isn't until June 4th. I'm doing "Race for the Cure".

Well, my son came home for spring break- he is a freshmen in college and boy did that disrupt my schedule and diet. The diet was a total loss (everybody had us over for dinner), my days switched around, but I completed week 2 and have started week 3. Made me realize what a distraction a he can be, 19 year old who can eat any and everything with out any consequences. It was nice running with him though, he is a college football player and he runs everyday, he was very supportive of me running, again- food was the nightmare! Good news is we have signed up for 3 races this summer! So, even though my 1st attempt at week 3 left me exhausted, I ran in a plowed cornfield in an attempt to prepare for the warrior dash, I made it! For day 2 of week 3 I am going to attempt a flat hiking trail that goes over grass, dirt, sand and rock.

w3d3 done. It was a toughie. I'll definitely be doing this week over. I had to bump the speed back a bit in order to get thru it. Nonetheless, I did it. I just don't feel like my endurance is increasing. Maybe I'm expecting too much too soon, but that's what I'm feeling. The next few days are supposed to be really nice, maybe I'll be able to get outside and see how it goes then. I have nothing to compare to other than the difference in treadmills, that we've already discussed. We'll see and time will tell.

Had to go to South Carolina due to a death in the family so my week 3 got messed up going to finish it this week. I did week 3 day 2 today. Will do another one maybe tomorrow then move on to week 4. I am not a runner but I am enjoying this program. I have bad knees to so I have braces I wear and I take it slower than others would. I will be doing my first 5k run April 9th for the donate life run/walk. I am excited. My son is a kidney recipient.

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.

Shadowmom and ZZYYGGY glad to have other people on week 3 again with me! Maybe we will all be ready to move on to week 4 together next week :)

I did day 1 of week three today and it was pretty tough, but I did it!

Thank you Cathy! You're comment made me take another look at myself. I didn't see it as a costive attitude. But I guess it is. I've learned and continue to learn to not get upset when things don't go my way or as planned. I can't change it so may as well work around it.

So glad you stuck with it and are moving along in the program!

I love your attitude CMULL! See, now I wouldn't have gotten to see your inspiring attitude if I hadn't stuck around for week three again! emoticon

Thank you! Thought it was just me. I know they have others so I'll have to try and get one of those next time. Maybe I'll like it better. Otherwise the warm weather is right around the corner and I can run outdoors soon. Easier at the gym though because I can take the kids when I have a sitter problem. We'll see. One way or another I'll get it in.

I do not think all treadmills are created equal! We have different ones at our gym and some of them I just don't use.

Good luck with W3 again Cathy!

I'm pleased that today I realized I could count my run on my program. Tomorrow is W3D2, we'll see how it goes. I may be re-doing W3 also. I know treadmills are treadmills, but I'm not so sure how I like the one's at the new gym I go to.

Gonna do week 3 again. Had a cold that slowed me down too much, don't feel ready to push on to week four yet. Week three here we come again! :)

W3D1 is done. It was a rough one for me. Was on a different treadmill than what I was used to and hit the emergency stop button in the middle of my run!!! Had to re-start but just wasn't the same as if I hadn't hit that button!

I think I may try to re-do it outside later. I didn't have my ipod to use the program so I didn't count toward meeting my goal there.

Today was my absolute best run in a long time! Two days ago was my worst. You just never know how a run will go until you get out and do it!

I've been running for over 2 years and yesterday was one of the hardest runs I've done! 6.15 miles of pure he$$. I don't know of anyone who has said every run was easy.

Does this ever get to the point where it feels easy all the time? I survived w3d2 but that is all. Just when I thought I was building endurance, I felt like I was exhausted again & I didn't run any faster than I did on Tuesday. Very frustrating! Maybe saturday's run will be better. The forecast is mid 40's so maybe I will move outside to improve my experience.

The powerful fact is that every experience can add to your confidence. The cheers and the sneers, the compliments and the complaints, the wins and the losses can all build confidence!
