Thank you so much for all of the suggestions! I downloaded an interval timer app on my phone and it seems to be doing the trick. I highly recommend them! Thanks again!

Time myself with a few methods! My Dads old pocket watch that has a minute hand insert.
My old cell (flip) has a stop watch on it)
My MP3 player (Sansa Fuse) displays the length of time on each song so I can just play certain songs and I know I did 3.44 mins or 4.00 etc etc. for the walk/jog . Can't wait till the training is done so I can just run it out : )
PS the above advise is good to. Just use the old dollar store and do the pedometer thing.
Maybe you should lower your milage and work upward? Right now I'm at 1.2 miles in 18 minutes so I'm working on my speed with that then I'll increase the miles.
Take it slow and easy : ) Good luck

Thats really not a bad way to chalk off your time! if it works go with it. I'm trying to stick to the training thing but since I've been running for a while I improvise here and there.
I can tell you from the last 5k that they were on the mark with their instruction and my running time got better.
Always go with what works for you. We're all different : )

I started this program with a friends last week. I used to run three times weekly and play sports, but my friend was never athletic and this is really starting from scratch for her. To help make the transition into running easier for her, we didn't time our first week, but instead used blocks to gauge our running. For example, we'd run the first block then walk the next two. We did this for 2 miles, or roughly 40-50 minutes. I know this is not what the program recommends, but I figured it was pretty close to a minute for our blocks. However, now we're in week two and I don't want to short-change ourselves by assuming we're doing the adequate times. How does everyone else time their intervals? I would use music, but since there's two of us it's difficult to time music together. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
