I went literally from the couch (zero exercise) to this running training program, and goodness, my body has had a few complaints. First, after week 1 day 1, it was my feet. After week 1 day 2, my right foot was griping so "loudly" I went out and dropped $100 on some running shoes that are so comfortable and perfect, it nearly brought tears to my eyes (I bought them the afternoon after day 2 and my foot was singing, but when I put them on in the store the pain instantly went away). My foot pain was gone the next day. Yay! Crisis averted, and week 1, day 3 went without a hitch.

I tried starting week 2, day 1, and...then my knees added their "voice" to the chorus of gripes. Right above my kneecap on both legs, I have this dull muscle ache. I backed off and added a full rest day, and the next day I tried the first interval and my knees started up again. So I created week 1.5 for myself: warmup ~5-8 minutes into good walk speed, 1 min run, 4 min walk, 2 min run, 3 min walk, 2 min run, 4 min walk, 1 min run, cooldown ~5-10 mins until home. It has helped, but my knees are still a bit whiny. I saw my doctor yesterday and he said I'm fine, but since I was not doing any exercise and had not seriously worked those muscles or tendons, they need some time to adjust. He told me to back off a bit but continue walking, and add running when pain was absent while maintaining the 1-2 minute intervals until I can do them without muscle soreness the next day.

So...I'll be on week 1.5 until my body figures out that it IS going to get off the couch! I am taking it much easier, though. I assured myself when I first signed on that I did not need to meet any race times, but it felt so good that I did push a bit for being as out of shape as I was/am. I'm sticking with it, though!

Knees, you just hush! You'll be in running shape before we both know it...
