I did my first day yesterday evening and realized how far I have to go....I've made progress but I'm still not as in shape as I should be. Probably nowhere close, lol. Oh well, not giving up. Gonna keep pushing

I just completed my first day of week one last night. It was easier than I thought. It was terribly hot though. I have a pedometer with a watch on it. It is working well.

I'm starting day 1 today. But it's gonna take more than 8 weeks for me. I signed up for a mile run race for the end of September. I'm determined to be a runner by the end of the year at least. But for the rest of the summer I've got several 5k walks but I'm definitely want to run some too.....and walk a 10k. I'm excited. It's a slow process but I am making progress.

Completed 1st day.
Question...... While exercising, how are you all keeping track of when to walk/jog. Do you use a timer alert , watch or just count?

PIICHII I have been following the Rookie program and that first week I did a lot of coughing as well, my lungs were not used to having to work that hard and open up that much so it was a new experience for them and eventually as time went on I found that I started to decrease the amount of coughing as I kept with the program, now I dont cough anymore and havent for awhile, I am on week 5. I wanted to keep going everyday as well but I would really suggest following the program to the letter, you can do other cardiovascular activities as suggested, like eliptical, swimming etc on the "OFF" days to build endurance, it will allow your body to heal and avoid shin splints and injury to your joints, personally speaking as I am a bigger girl, I didnt want to risk an injury because it would completely stop the great momentum I have. IT is awesome your ready to take on the world girl but be wise and realize you have to treat your body well and listen to it, making sure to not injure it but also know when to push more. More power to you, be safe, and follow the guidelines if you want to do it right emoticon

I can't really afford to see a physician. Haha. Honestly, I feel like I could do more. Although now soreness is settling in. I don't want to make myself hate something I have been thinking/talking about doing for a while now. So yeah definitely want to take it slow.

If you're just beginning to run, then no, don't run every day. You need time to recover and reduce your risk of injury. As for your lungs, that's something your doctor will have to tell you. I know I cough but it's due to allergies. I think zumba is fine to do on off days but if your legs start feeling really heavy or the workouts start to feel hard, you'll need to take extra rest/recovery days.

Just finished Week 1: Day 1.

I am super proud of myself. Some questions I have. Is it normal to feel out of breath/cough after you run? It's been a few hours and I feel better now so I am wondering if my lung capacity is okay?

Also, can I do the first week every day? I would like to be able to keep up my momentum but I am wondering if it's too much at first. I know I want to continue running so this is the best way to get me training.

Also, is it okay to do Kinect Fitness 2012 or Zumba on the days you are not running?

Thanks for the help in advance.

I just finished Wk1, Day 1 and I thought it was pretty easy - I did 2 miles in 20 min. Running is just so frustrating though. I swim 4 miles per week easily and a fast pace. When I started running 2 miles 2x per week (as a way to training for the Tough Mudder) it was awful! My breathing is all wrong and I get awful stomach aches afterwards. It's so frustrating because I expected to be able to run some kind of distance considering I'm in pretty good shape. Sooo here I am doing this Rookie Program to a 5K because I need to improve my running or I'm going to completely die when I do the TM. Any advice is appreciated!

Drinnking more water too!! I do have a slight headache. But I haven't drank any water today. Im a work in progress. Let's do this!!!

Completed my first day Sunday. I am training on the elliptical as I have knee problems and the pavement is just way too hard for me right now. It did feel totally awesome and I hope to be able to progress all the way through the training on the elliptical.

If I do well with the elliptical and get my legs and knees strong enough I may retake the program outside on the pavement but I want to take things slowly and see how it goes.

Good luck everyone!!!

Just finished W1D3. I feel amazing. Read the article about running and tried to focus on proper breathing, and looking forward instead of down. Helped a lot! I can't believe how great I feel. I have always wanted to be a runner and never did because I couldn't breathe. I always thought it was because I was out of shape. While I have been out of shape, I now know it was primarily due to breathing wrong. I suddenly feel so much more confident in my ability to continue this program and continue to feel better every day.

I've run 4 marathons and 19 half marathons but never walked either one before emoticon

IMHO, I think walking them would be harder to do as you are out there much longer then if you were running them.

Great job, everyone!

Iamheretowin, I am just like you! I walk like a madwoman; I've walked a marathon and six half marathons! But I've never, EVER run a 5K and it just seems DAUNTING to do it.

But I definitely want to take my fitness to the next level, so at the tender age of 58 I'm ready to run my first 5K!!!!

We can do this!!!!

Great job everyone!

I did day one today, 1.25 miles in 30 min. Freshman year of college I used to cover 2.5-3 miles in the same amount of time. Oh well, that was 9 years ago and at least I'm at a starting point.

So I began my running program today. I thought since I had been working so hard with the spring challenge this would be easy. It wasn't but I feel great. I will have shin splints for a few days and I need to relearn breathing. But thank God I made it! Try it, you may not love it but there is immediate gratification when you do it!!!

Carve out what is most important to you first, then allocate your day to others! I promise you and they will be better for this decision!!

Last night I ran for the first time since I was probably 12. I am so impressed with myself. I have always been a long distance walker. I can walk forever..but I wanted to be able to run. But never felt I could. I smoked. I got stiches. I thought I looked stupid. bla bla bla.

Well, I no longer smoke. I read about stiches and found out it is as simple as breathing deep through the mouth to keep them away...and who cares what I look like.

Went out and did day 1 last night and no stiches. No smoker chest pains. and I felt so good I didn't care!

So excited. I truly believe now that if I put forth the effort, I will be running 5K!!
