Pat, 16,000 steps sounds like a great goal! That's about 7.5 miles/day, isn't it? Good luck!

Morning, Runners!
Shannon - you are important! Make sure to put yourself first just like on an airplane. You get your oxygen first, then you can administer to others.
Cas - you put yourself first, too! Take care of yourself. Pneumonia is nothing to mess with!
November - running kind of gets under your skin, doesn't it? Glad that you are back in love with it!
I am continuing to run 2 or 3 unofficial 5K's a week on my cardio days. I added back in strength training this week. I let it go while training for my first official race, and I feel the need to get back to strength training. My arms are sore today, so I know they missed it, too!
Enjoy your day!

I did my 1st run last night and am back in love. Toward the 17 min mark, I was starting to feel tired and couldn't wait to end it. So I just slowed my pace by .2. I walked at a 2.5 pace and ran at a 4. 3 pace. Looking forward to tomorrows Run.
Feel better soon!!!

I found yoga helps. Your mind has to be mellow and you have to let go in order to really enjoy the run. Because in Yoga, you have to be able to relax your mind and body to do the movements. This helps you in other aspects of exercise and life. Hope this helps.

Week 1 done. Still having a hard time finding my mojo with running. Hopefully once the weight starts to melt off I will have a better time running. I walk faster than I run. Never thought that would be possible but it is. Once I start my jog my lower half sems to tense up so no matter how much I try to expand my stride it feels like a rubber band and I just can not sem to figure out what I need to do to fix this. Any suggestions you have I am all ears! Decided I am going to do week one again. Not happy with the first go around so whats one more week. I'll still be out there and thats all that counts.

Hi I have not say hallo last week, I was choose to be leader in the South African team and it keep me abit busy. Oh but I miss you guys alot. If I can just get the SA friends to be half so supportive like you ladies, then I have victory..
I have done week two all over again last week. It went very well. It's the other way around, so not so steep ups. Everyday I increase my speed a little bit more.
So today I start W3D1 and the bad side around. I was so suprise, my speed increase so much, when I reach the beginning of the steep part of the hill, my clock went off and I could walk it all up.
Thank God for little blessings like these !!! This will give me time to get abit more stronger and more fit for when the time come and I must face that hill again..
I am really excited tonight. It feels like a victory somehow...

Hi, Ladies,
I hope this Halloween weekend gives you good weather so that you can stay active!
The training leading up to the race was sometimes boring and/or difficult. But on race day, it was so worthwhile! I encourage you to stay with your program. You are so worth it! Nancy

Hi, Ladies,
I've been doing my workout on the elliptical machine this week to spare my knees. The virtual 5K run is next week, so I'll have to get back on the treadmill for that! Or, run it outside, which might be more fun. It's supposed to be a nice weekend, so maybe I'll do it this weekend.
I hope you are all doing well and staying with your program. You can do it! You are WORTH IT!

Hi, Stacey,
Welcome to the accountability discussion board. Glad to have you here! Congrats on getting through day 1. As you may have read in past posts, the first couple of weeks are the hardest. So, stick with it. Fight through the pain and the demons that will tell you it's not worth it - because you certainly ARE worth it! Hang in there. A few weeks from now, you will be so glad that you did! Nancy

I hope that says enough?
I've enjoyed reading how much you ladies have encouraged each other and hoping I can glean a little? I did my W1D1 run/walk today, but have been on my butt on the couch reading this helpful yet darned website for much more of the day than I'd planned or hoped. So far I really like SP, but need to get motivated to actually NOT be on here, but doing SOMETHING. LOL!
Anyways, just wanted to say to all of you! You're still HERE!!
And to Nan for your race!

Thank you, Ladies, for your encouragement and for being with me in spirit during my first race! I finished #2 in my age category with a time of 33:55.45. It was a perfect day - 63 degrees and sunny with a 10mph breeze that kept us cool while running! The race was to benefit scholarships at the college I work at, so it was a great event to participate in.
I'm grateful for my Garmin watch which helped me to run MY race and not the pace that the leaders were setting. So many people started out trying to stay with the leaders, only to fall waaaaaaay back because they hit the wall or cramped up. People who I considered to be faster runners than me finished the race walking because they started out too fast. I strongly recommend a Garmin Forerunner watch (or something like that), which will tell you your speed and track your mileage. It has a built-in GPS that can track your mileage. Pretty neat watch. Keep with your program, Ladies. You can do this! Next week is the virtual 5K. Good luck to everyone!

Go Nan! I will be with u in spirit with my pom poms and a big smile on my face!
Hannelie, I agree with Nan. It's good to push urself but we r just running rookies. Ur being too hard on urself, which I am completely familiar with cuz I am all too often. I would give the hill a rest for a few weeks. I don't even go past .05% incline on my tread. I figure inclines will come when I complete running a 5K on a flat surface. That will be my goal once I complete this 8 week program I will start upping my incline a little at a time.

Hannelie,
I have not been training with hills for the past 8 weeks, so I think you should give yourself a break, start week 4, and go down the hill instead of up it. Try going up the hill in a few more weeks, after you've built some endurance. Remember, we are a ROOKIE running program, not EXPERIENCED Mount Everest runners!
Thank you for your well wishes for my race tomorrow. About 20 hours from now, I'll be congregating with my 5K training class to warm up for the race. We have a 2pm start time - strange time to start, but the race is in conjunction with other homecoming activities at the college, so they are trying to keep people on campus for the rest of the festivities in the afternoon and then the football game at 6pm. They gave each racer 3 free tickets to the football game.
I'm ready - as ready as I can be. It's going to be 60 degrees and sunny - a perfect day to run! It's been rainy and in the low 50's the last couple of days, so the sunshine and warmth will be welcome tomorrow.
Have a healthy weekend!

Hi my Jogging Friends
Well done Cass, it's nice to know it's not only me suffering out there. Nanci good luck with that race. I think you are so ready for it. Give it your best.. We as team are cheering even if we are not there in flesh..
Well I could not made it for the third time now. I am not ready to take on week 3. I feel like crying because I really tried very hard today but I just could not. Next week I go the other way around my triangle. So that steep part I am suffering with I will problably go down. I will practice next week to get stronger and then the next week I am taking up that steep part again.
What do you ladies think is it a good idea or not?
Anyway have a great weekend

Cas, great job persevering - even with the gas pressure. Would it help not to eat for a couple of hours before running? I usually run in the morning, and I have 1/2 of a protein bar. I don't have any trouble with that little bit of food in my stomach. But, when I run with my 5K class, it's right after work. I usually eat a late lunch (3ish), and sometimes that bothers my stomach. The coach told us not to eat after 11am on Saturday. Our race is at 2pm - so he's telling us at least 3 hours without food.
Two days to race day. I did a light elliptical workout this morning followed by my physical therapy exercises. Feeling pretty good! I'll do the same tomorrow. I picked up my race packet this morning. Our race jerseys are pretty nice, but they are long sleeved and it's going to be 60 degrees and sunny for the race! I'll start with it on, but plan to wear a sleevelss sports bra/tank top underneath that I can run in if the long sleeves are too hot. My goal is to finish the race in less than 35 minutes!
Keep up the good work, Ladies! We are WORTH IT!

Holy Crap! I survived W4D2 today. It was really hard for me. I had to dig deep. It wiped me out. Hopefully W4D3 is a little easier. My gas pressure has been getting worse when I run. It feels like I'm being stabbed thru the heart straight out my scapula. It stops as soon as I stop running. I called my Gastro doc & they said running bounces everything around can make it worse & to take an extra Prilosec everyday & see if that helps. Well it didn't help today. :( Better luck next time.
Hi Compucathy! This is a great little group. I hope it helps u as much as it has me.
Hannelie, I agree with Nan as long as you keep trying that hill does not win.
Nan, Best of luck to u on ur race on Sat.

Hannalie, I would say that as long as you keep going back to that hill to try again, the hill is NOT winning! Keep up the good work!
I discovered that when I couldn't read my Garmin in the dark yesterday morning, I ran faster than my usual pace. Or, could it have been the 40 degree temperature that made me run faster? Tonight is my last training class with the track coach before the race on Saturday. I plan to pick his brain for pointers!
One of my teammates sent me the link to this very good article about interval racing. I do believe that even though I can run up to 20 minutes without slowing to walk, I may just follow this guys advice! I'll ask the track coach about it tonight -- www.dailyspark.com/blog.asp?post=runwalk_m ethod_works_for_me_will_it_work_for_you
I clicked through to Jeff Galloway's website to read more about interval racing. He makes a lot of sense. www.jeffgalloway.com/

The hill wins AGAIN !!!
Today I push myself up through the whole difficult part, but after the difficult part it still goes up, just not so steep. I could not made it. I've done another 1min extra jogging for my failing attemped.
If I do not beat that hill on Friday I going to take another week on week 2.
Ok I have also a race on Saterday. I going to walk/jog but I am not going for time, just to finish 5km walk/jog will be a big victory for me...
Welcome Compucathy nice to have you on board...
Till Friday then... Enjoy friends

Welcome, Compucathy! Great to have you checking in with your accountability.
Cas, Hannelie, Cey, good job persevering - and doing over when necessary. You will be so glad that you stuck with the program a few weeks from now!
My first 5K race is this Saturday. I took yesterday (Sunday) as a rest day from exercise. I did a practice 5K on the treadmill this morning, and I had a lot of aches afterward. My chiropractor said to keep moving before the race - stretch or walk - so as not to tighten up on the rest days. Good to know. I'm still running my practice 5K in under 35 minutes. I had some gusty winds on Saturday when I raced and ran it in 34:55 - just made the under 35-minute goal that I"m striving for.
Have a great week. Keep posting your accountability here!

Hannelie! I started week 4 today! It was not as difficult as I anticipated but that last interval was a doozy. I had to talk myself thru till the end but I DID IT! The front of my right ankle seems to be a little sore now. Hopefully it will feel better by Wed. Tomm and Friday will be strength training and walking. Wed and Sat will be 5K Training. What are everyone's plans for the week?

Wow I love the way this team helps each other.. This is really nice..
Well I did not done my W1D3 on Friday. My husband was not home and I did not slept at all that night. So Friday was bad for me, I felt still painfull after the weeks hard work, and I slept most of the day.
Saterday I was the whole day busy with my hubby and Sunday I am resting.
So it's Monday and I decide to get Friday's workout over with. I've done it !!! I decide to take my route the other way around. I cannot say it went beter but I have done it and that is what counts..
Still suffering with those hills !!
Maybe tonight I will do W2D1. I will just see how I feel...
Have a great day everyone

Back from my whirlwind trip away! The way my schedule worked, I was not able to get my workouts in... well technically I chose not to get them in. I am back at home, and ready to get back on track. I will be repeating my week three this week, since I only got one week three run in.
I just realized that I leave for Poland in a week! Wow. I guess I will be spending a couple more weeks on week three... I do not see me getting my running time in while I am away.

Hey all! I hope everyone is having a nice weekend. I just finished week 3! Yay me! :) I just looked at Week 4 and it's a little intimidating to think of running for 3 mins. It was still tough doing just 2 mins. I guess I'll just give it a try and see what I can do. There's nothing to fear but fear itself. Right? It I need to repeat week 3 or tweek week 4 a little that's what I'll do. Does anyone else experience indigestion while running? Running seems to be giving me pressure from gas bubbles. I try to burp and get it out but it doesn't go away until I'm done running. It kind of sucks! I do have GERD aka acid reflex. I don't work out for atleast an hour after a meal. Any ideas? Also, do you try to stick to the spark guidelines for how many calories you should burn in a day? I keep burning more than it suggests and it keeps popping up this little message about eat more calories if I exercise more or it could affect my weight loss.

Shannon & Cas, congrats on your week 3 results! I found that it started getting easier after the 3rd week - or maybe I was used to the pain on my body! Just kidding! I've definitely been biten by the running bug now, though!
This morning, I finished my Spark 8-week 5K Rookie Running program and got my trophy -- ooooh, some bling already! Race day is one week and counting. Today's practice 5K run was done in 35:25.
Tony (HealthDude) gave me some good guidance in building running muscles. He had me increase my incline to 1% (I was doing 0.5%). Instead of increasing my speed, he suggested that I progressively increase the incline. I don't think we are running hills next week (or if we are, they are small ones), but this method of increasing the incline will better prepare me for when I run the Chicago marathon -- oh, I mean when I run a race that does include hills!
Have a fabulous, active weekend! Keep up with your training. I believe that you can do it! We are SO WORTH IT!

I just completed W3D1 and OMG it felt sooooo good!!! It was hard and it was work, by no means easy, but wow!!!!
Please excuse any typos as I am posting from my iPad.
Last night, I ran my 5K practice in 34:37. I ran with my 5K training class, and the coach has us doing intervals similar to Spark's program. Originally, he had given us a program for his athletes, where they keep increasing their run time until they are running the entire race. I started following that program instead of the Spark program.
Last night when the coach announced 8 minute run/2 minute walk intervals, I told him I was going to do 22 minute run/1 minute walk/7 minute run. My classmates decided they were going to follow my lead! Sadly, they aren't taking their training seriously and are only running once a week in the class. Thanks to this accountability board, I have been faithful with my practice runs 3 - 4 times a week. They were not able to keep up with me. They realized that they have a LOT of work to do before the race on 10/22. So, they are planning to meet this weekend to run another time or two.
I'm glad they decided to challenge themselves to run longer and that they are going to take some measures to train a little more this last week. I hope it is helpful to them.
Keep up the good work, Ladies. When you look back after the 8 weeks, you will be amazed at your strength and endurance! We can DO IT! We are WORTH IT!

Welcome, Hannelie! Glad to have you join us with your accountability.
I will be training with my 5K class tonight. The track coach usually has us do walk/run intervals. I've been running the entire 5K for the past week. I plan to do that tonight as well, unless he doesn't recommend it. I'm finishing week 8 - the track coach's program is 9 weeks, so I have one more week of his program. My race is a week from Saturday - on 10/22. I can't wait! After being at the Chicago marathon this weekend, I'm chomping at the bit to be a part of the festivities instead of running by myself most of the time! I've been watching the weather trend for next week - it looks like it's going to be in the lower 50's. That's probably pretty good running weather.
Hope you ladies are doing well. Keep up the good work! WE are WORTH IT!

Shannon, Cey, Cas, great to see you all! You are all doing a fabulous job -- in spite of life's challenges.
Shannon, I hope your little guy is feeling better soon. Must be pretty serious if you had to spend the day at the hospital. I will hold him in prayer.
Cey and Cas, great job on week 3. When I think back on how I struggled the first few weeks, and how I am running almost the entire time now, it makes me smile to see and feel that progress. Keep up the good work - it's definitely worth it! And WE are WORTH IT!
This morning, I ran my practice 5K in 33:33. I kicked the speed on the treadmill up a little bit. The treadmill acts as a "pusher" -- you gotta keep up with it or get thrown off. I know once outside, I'll have to rely on other racers to be my "pusher."
It's late, I need to get up early. Sweet dreams, Ladies!

Hi girlies! W3D1 went good! I actually felt pretty good all the way thru. I'm still doing the second count down on the last intervals but it does feel so good when you complete it! I ran 5.0 mph for 2 whole mins. straight feels so good to say. I did strength training and walked today and will again tomm. Thursday will be my W3D2.
Shannon, I hope your little guy gets better quickly. I have 2 boys of my own and it's hard when they're sick to think of anything but their well being.
Cey, great job! The first and last intervals do seem easier. When u know ur almost done it gives ya that little extra push u need to get thru.
Nan, Being so close to ur goal must be so exciting. 34:10 is an awesome time. U go girl!

Cas, how did your W3 run go? I changed my mind, and have decided to do two weeks on week three. I went to the fitness club today, I got through the first two runs without much issue. By the third and fourth run intervals, I was REALLY pushing myself for the last 30 seconds. Oddly enough, the fifth run wasn't horrible. Perhaps the "You better believe I just did that" feel goods were running through my body.

Hi everyone! Sorry I have not been on as much as I planned. My little guy is still sick. Spent the day at St Chris Hospital but he's getting better.
I finished week 2 today! Whoo Hooo! Ate a terrible dinner but got on the treadmill and did my workout anyway. I was not letting my dinner ruin my whole day.
I will check in tomorrow.
Shannon

Cas, yes, I started week 8 today. My race is October 22. I'm taking a 5K training class with the track coach at the college that I work at. His program is 9 weeks. I'm pretty much following his program, but recording my progress on the "5K Your Way Rookie Running Program" chart. I ran 34:29 this morning on the treadmill.
After being at the Chicago marathon this weekend, I can see how you can get caught up in the momentum and perhaps run faster than you typically would. I just don't want to start out too fast and burn out.
Keep up the good work, Ladies! We CAN do this!

W3D1 taking place in T minus 30 minutes :) It shouldn't be too bad adding 1 more interval. I pigged out yesterday so atleast I'll burn off some of those bad girl calories. I'm going to work out 5 days this week instead of 6, alternating 5K Training with Strength Training. I was feeling a little burned out by the end of last week. I did sleep like a log though. :) What is on the agenda for everyone this week?
Nan, the race sounds like it was an awesome experience to witness. I will have to put that on my list of things to do. I got a little rub rash myself. It is uncomfortable. You're in week 8 this week right? When is your race?
Cey, atleast you will be sweating from some kind of exercise. Good improvising. :)

Hey, Ladies,
Cey, congrats on finishing week 2! I thought it started getting easier in week 3 - somehow the body realizes that we aren't going to give up!
I attended the Chicago marathon today to cheer on 3 of my girlfriends who were racing. I was brought to tears when the wheel chair and hand wheel participants passed by us. And then there was the blind racing team -- what an incredible display of courage and perseverance by all these athletes. When I saw all the race participants at mile marker 23, it made me so grateful that I am only running a 5K! We can do this, ladies!

Youch! Painful lesson to learn! But congrats on the amazing time! You should feel very proud!
I finished week two today! Woohoo! I think I will be repeating it this week, as I have to travel for a couple of days. No treadmill access for running, but will be taking a workout DVD with me, and will do it both days I am away.... even if I have to use the hallway!

Hi, Ladies,
Ran a practice 5K today in 80 degree weather in 34:49. I wore baggy shorts, which kept creeping up on my legs while running and I ended up with my first case of runner's chaff. Youch! Note to self: wear tight shorts the day of the race! They want us to wear costumes for the race, but after today's experience, I don't think I'm going to risk wearing something I haven't run in already. I was going to wear a cheerleader uniform, but unless I get a chance to run in it first, that's not gonna happen!
Heading down for the Chicago marathon tomorrow. A couple of my girlfriends are racing in it. Harry & I are carrying balloons so they can spot us. We have our posters made, and they know what mile markers we will be at. Supposed to be 80 degrees again, so it will be a beautiful day for us, but a hot day for them!
Have a fabulous weekend, everyone!

Well ladies I kicked Week 2's ass! I did it! Yay!
Nan, I never thought about attending a race either but now that I think about it I think it would be an awesome experience and very motivating to see someone where you want to be. Let me know what you think of it.
Cey, awesome job! Keep up the good work. It can be so hard but also so rewarding.

I got my W2D2 run in today. I was covered in sweat by the end, and had to dig down VERY deep to make it through that last run. And I certainly did not want to go on the elliptical afterwards... but I did it.
