Hi. Starting week 3 training. It'll take me a little longer to do week 3 because I'm sore and tired this week. I think I picked up a bug over the weekend. Oh well, it's just a little slowdown until...

Hey you guys--I just did a 2 mile walk on the treadmill! I thought that I might die first, but OMG! I did it in 40 minutes!!! Wicked humid here today so the gym was fine for getting in that Day 2 task!

I am actually doing 2 miles, not just the 25 min. I go to how I am feeling that day. I have been walking 2 miles for some time now, so why stop at 25 min. it doesn't make sense.

Actually, since many here don't have experience with running and are just starting with walking, a link to post workout stretches would be great.

The stretches at Cool Running's Couch to 5K would be an example of a great set. Maybe with some specific stretches for preventing plantar fasciitis (which is common with heavy use and even more common if you're overweight).

TCHNCRFT ~ Actually I hadn't posted that information on the team boards, but thanks to you asking I have done just that. It can now be found on the walking tips informational thread. If anyone thinks of anything else that will be helpful to others, just let me know and I'll be glad to put it on the walking tips thread.

Rellimtenaj,
Thanks for the explanation about distance and building up strength.

Was there an explanation about that somewhere on this team's site that I missed? It's information I could have/should have used earlier, but it's possible I just didn't see it.

Thanks.

Keep watching that 10K is in the planning stage. Any running plan can be used for walking if you want to increase your mileage and/or speed. If you feel it ramps up to quickly you can always repeat a week or drop back if need be. Add hills and off road to your training in order to be better prepared for your hike.

By the way, I'd love to see similar training programs on Spark People for longer mileages like 10k. I have a goal to do a long distance hike, but there is something of a dearth of training programs that don't either presume that you are already a fit hiker or that your goal is to move up to running speeds along with the increase in distance.

Thanks, that's the sort of thing I was wondering. I've been doing 30 min walks (or longer) for the last several months. I'll have to see how I feel in the morning to decide if 2 miles or 30 min is the better bet. I'm sure that the cycling will be something I pay more attention to as I add mileage.

There is actually reasoning in dropping back slightly in distance then rebuilding. It allows your muscles a chance to remain active but repair themselves from the longer distance. As muscles repair and rebuild they become stronger which will allow your to go farther with less discomfort. As your cardio fitness increases you will be able to go faster because your muscles will be strong enough to help you increase your speed.

SebastianaLady,
I just finished my 3rd week. I went farther each day than was required, since that's what I've already worked up to.
Personally, I don't see any reason to walk LESS than you've been doing. Probably, as we walk, our time will get better.
I think the purpose of these weekly posted requirements is to help people build up their endurance. But if we're already there, I say keep going!

Just came in from my last week 2 walk and was looking ahead at the week 3 schedule.

At my 20min/mile pace the day 1 walk will be a little less distance than week 2 day 3 and week 3 day 2.

If I'm feeling good at the 2 mile level, is there a reason to drop down to 30 min (which will be about 1.7 miles) rather than just doing another 2 mile walk here? Is there a goal of increasing the pace on this timed walk or something else I should be considering?
