Moving MIL into her new apartment and summer college teaching should make getting in the week 1 miles do-able.

No recurance of the wheezing - thankfully!!!
I have chosen a little mascot image for my 5K WALK With 2 Canes
Remember the childhood story of the little blue engine that said "I think I can ... I think I can" on the way up the hill and then on the way down he said "I thought I could...."

I will need encouragement and determination to walk this...especially the last mile....pray with me against the spirit of fear that I won't be able to complete the walk.

I'm scheduled for 6am on Saturday June 18 and allowing 2 to 2.5 hours to do it if needed.to allow for rest stops and checks on my cardiac function too.

WOW !!! YEAH Good work ...So glad that it all came together for you and you could see the progress of working so hard at it!

I had a scare this morning when I went out to walk - planning a hard one hour time and after ten minutes of freshly mowed lawn I started wheezing - went in and took benadril nd cool drink and rinsed off face hands and bare legs - calmed it right down but have never reacted like that before!!! and did NOT get in good therapy walk that I had hoped for

How are things going?
The heat is hurting me - will try to get out and walk by 7 a few mornings and then gradually move my early morning routine back so I will be ready and on the course for my 5K by 6 am on the 18th. I have to get two heart meds in before I walk and allow a half hour between them and at least a half hour for the second one to be working well before I start. It keeps my heart from going too fast and is required with my heart stents.

Thank you for the link to Trekking poles - I learned enough to do a more thourough search when I am ready to invest.
My canes are OK for this stage of my walking - but I think I want poles to use if I keep doing these walks for fitness which I plan to do, Lord willing and Drs encouraging.

I made 10 minutes on the treadmill today and got up to 1.7MPH comfortably. I have fibromyalgia and must increase things like this slowly or will bring on pain flare and back to ground zero.

I thought the following link (if I did it right) can answer a lot of your hiking pole questions. To be honest with you, the poles I use are from a discount store so they weren't expensive. For my needs (keeping off my face) they have been all I've needed. I apcan say though that my next pair will have cork grips because plastic grips get too sweaty. I'd also probably look for better shock-absorption than the none of my cheap poles.

Thanks for the encouragement
I did 7 minutes today and got up to 1.4mph for part of it yes, hanging on for dear life!!
Balance issues are huge for me - sometimes even thinking is hard and new situations are hardest for me.
I am learning to walk again and have all kinds of issues also some determinations to NOT be in a wheel chair YET!!!
I use two canes to walk - needing more support for right leg than left but walk a much more even gait if I use two - you said you use pole for hiking - would you share type and or brand and what do I look for in quality and stability.

Linda, when I first started on the treadmill I was at the slowest speed, in my case 1mph. Gosh didn't I feel embarrassed by that. But I started to bump my speed up a little at a time, about .2 at a time (I'm weird about numbers and prefer 2s and 5s so it was an arbitrary choice). It really wasn't long before I could do 1.5 for a while and then back it down to a slower, resting speed. My steady walking time has taken me a long time to build to 40 minutes. I started out doing 5 minutes and then resting. I realized that's how I hike too. I'd go for as long as I could, rest a few minutes, have a drink and continue on.

As far as holding on, I have to use the handles, even at the slowest speeds because I am just that uncoordinated lol. I switch my hand position up a lot and sometimes I can even manage holding with just one hand without landing on my face. No, seriously. I use poles when I hike for balance. I try to look at the handles the same way.

YEAH You have started and did the 15 minutes outside - YEAH!!!!
I went to your page and see you use a treadmill - can you share some experience with that?
I am just starting [had my five minute into to it!] Do you hold on to the handles or are you able to swing your arms free?
What speed did you start out at or are you still at? how fast did you try to increase your amount of time ...like five minutes a day or a week or what? I need someone to talk/write with to keep my interest in that part of this journey.

Katie - I too am thankful for second chances - recovering from spinal surgery back in Dec and having to learn how to walk again and coming all the way back - I'm finishing Wk 5 again - and am finally up to walking 2 miles in one hour with two canes -
You can do this --- hang in there and keep checking in and I will cheer you on.

Any others using treadmills? [besides RainBowDis]

I want to encourage you but am personally sad that I have not been able to meet my goal of lengthening my training time this week - one more day to try to get in full 60 minute walk - I may just really slow my pace and see if I can get in the time rather than push for distance.
So keep building time upon time and effort upon efffort

LindaF49, we have a treadmill in our family room and that's where I'm doing my walking currently....at least when I am focused on the training for the day. I get extra walking in with the dog too. I hit 2 miles total yesterday, just not in my training session.

Rainbowdis - good for you to see the positive even if wrong # for the day - Where are you walking or are those pedometer steps equal to 1.25mi.?

Due to my spinal surgery, I am not allowed to walk on pavement and no steep hills so am just doing circles in our yard and garden areas. Soft underfoot and only one hill that pulls back at all - I am extremely cautious and after a few days figured out I could could zig zag and eliminate the pulling - even adds a few steps to each "lap" .I will do my official WALK on composite surface of High School track.

CGASKEW44 I see you are being faithful in checking in with steps ,,, even our down days we can still be accountable and that encourages others to not give up because "we are not alone!!! this was a travel day for appointments so literally sat all day except for potty stops and to walk in and out of buildings. I kept wiggling my feet trying to keep circulation going but could hardly walk when we finally got back home. Now to catch up on Spark and emails and early to bed.

LINDAF49; Live in North Carolina in a small town. I have two grandsons aged 19 and 17. They live close and I see the 19 yr old several times weekly. He has Aspbergers syndrome but not real bad. Talks well and learns well those things of interest to him. The 17 yr old is very active and on the go but looks after the 19 yr old like his parents.

Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Phil 2:3-4.

Looks like you are off to a good start...Good to see you checking in and accomplishing.
GolfGMa..where are you and how many Grands? I am 67 and have only one and they are in Alaska so have never seen him.
RV Lady ...sorry I don't remember your name - your steps are such an encouragement to me because it reminds me what CAN be accomplished. Looking forward to more notes from you.

Today is pay day so I am walking up town, down town and in between. So far have walked over 2 miles. I have more errands to do after lunch.

She thought she could so she did, every other day fasting

day 2 and did a mile each day :) got a race scheduled and paid for 4/16/16 so I got to get the distance thing going.

My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
