I teach special ed students and LOVE LOVE LOVE my Smartboard - the lowest functioning of my students can do something with it even if it is hand over hand. I am seeing them become more independent and can see progress in ways I never before had the opportunity to see it with these students.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

Our class was one of the last in our school too -- in fact, my class was one of the last in the entire county - BUT I did get one as a Christmas present the day before our Christmas break and got it hooked up in January - used it EVERY day after that.

We only have a couple of classrooms with Smartboards and special ed. is the last to get anything. We're renovating/rebuilding all our buildings over the next 4 yrs. so if we do get them it would be after renovations.

As a special educator, I feel smartboards are most valuable to our profession. I've seen students demonstrate understanding that way when they couldn't any other way.

I am definitely a fan of my smartboard - finally got one after several years of waiting as all the general ed teachers got theirs and my kids did without - NOW they LOVE it.

I'm a huge fan of smartboards, ipads, and handheld dry erase boards. The first two are great pieces of technology while the third allows me to modify, prompt, and work with my students with autism on various levels.

Well, I remember when our school was using SRA even longer ago. I lived in New Jersey and our school was a test school for SRA in the 1950s and early 60s. Our school also was a test school for Evelyn Wood speed reading program way back when.

After my day yesterday, I was going to say a whip and a chair or that paddle that the parents of my students in Africa gave me when I ran a small private school in Nigeria - the parents said if the kids acted up to "beat them well well", but SRA is even more fun.

I remember using SRA in 7th grade. That was 40 PLUS years ago. I wish I had access to one now. I have one block of my 6th graders that I think would really get into it. I'll have to nose around and see if there's one lurking unused somewhere.

I know this will sound old school but I am using the SRA reading program in my school. I have a pull out program and I like the stories and the students are motivated by the competition of the colors.

I know I learned how to read with this program 40 years ago but I really like it. Especially as a pull out resource for the students reading below grade level.

Sometimes I feel like mission control! I love my SmartBoard - mainly the notebook software. I do all my science presentations with it and imbed links to interactive sites. I have problems with the iPad and apple TV - does not always want to connect. Just got 2 iPods through a grant and am having fun with fluency reads.

My favorite tool is the student desk. I use them as a white board. Make a T-chart of something with a part....then wipe it away. I tell 3 bells of English so sometimes I have to clean them with Windex or some such at the end of the day. It does tend to build up.

My school tried the mimeo and had a hard time to get it to be consistent. Then the district went to Smart Boards and they were a little more predictable.

It's very low-tech, but dry erase boards and markers. I learned how to make my own out of shower board that you can get at Home Depot or Loew's. I can use them for handwriting, language arts, literacy and math. They come in handy for MRS, too.

Very good point Nancy! I have 5 this year and 4 of those are fabulous. The other one has already met with the principal and knows things need to change if she wants to keep her job.

My favorite teaching tool is quality classroom aides. I am special ed teachers and I have students with different disabilities and abilities in my room. Without the aides, I would spend ALL of my time putting out fires and dealing with behaviors.

I took a great workshop last summer and then bought 3 of Kathy Richardson's math books. I have 3 of them: Developing Number Concepts. There are a lot of hands on activities that help teach number sense. My consultant also gave me the assessments that go with these books. These are separate. The assessments give you specific activities and deficit areas for each student.
