Hi, Cathy. I've done lots of training on the CCSS in AZ, both sitting in the training and conducting them, and from what I can tell (I'm an ELA teacher), for science and SS, the easiest way to think of the CCSS in your content area is as an overlap to your content standards. The Common Core came from the College and Career Readiness standards, and are focused on reading, writing, listening and speaking, and language (grammar, usage, mechanics, spelling, etc.) skills that kids need to have in order to be successful in college and the workplace.

For science, social studies, and technology, this means looking at your content differently, it seems, and thinking about how you can push your students to higher levels of literacy within your content area.

If you look at the CCSS for ELA, and scroll ALLL the way toward the end, you can see how those standards are laid out for history, etc. Here's a link to a pdf of the standards, and scroll to page 60 for history and social sciences:
http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSS
I_ELA%20Standards.pdf

Hope this helps some! :)

SC is transitioning to Common Core as well. I teach 7th grade Social Studies so I'm not affected directly just yet but I think the early grades will be implementing it this year. I have to admit, I'm not as familiar with CC as I would like. Our principal sends some of our teachers to district level trainings but they are always Math and ELA.

If anyone can enlighten me as to how it will impact middle level SS I would really appreciate it!

We have lots of changes next year. About 1/3 of our staff (maybe more over summer!) will be new - new principal was able to do do some house cleaning, finally! We will have a new LA curriculum (Springboard, put out by the College Board) to align with CCSS, we're going back to 100 minute blocks of math and reading - lots of new stuff happening. I'm hoping that another change this year will be making AYP! Our scores are up, but we don't have the official word yet.

AMYABELL - where in AZ are you? I'm in Phoenix. :)

For some reason 11 classrooms/offices got switched around in my school. It will be an adventure next year just to find people!

We started Common Core last school year. We used the Houghton Mifflin Go math, I really like it. I taught 1st grade for 3 years, kindergarten last year, and this year I am teaching Special Ed pre-k through 3rd grade. I guess there is always something new each year! I also subbed a long time, I know how you feel. We moved to AZ so I could get a job.

Also, we start school even earlier this year, July 9th. Not looking forward to the hot AZ heat to teach:(

Our schoole will be starting Personal Learning Communities. Our district will be getting new Math books. Our old ones are at least 12 years old. I will be teaching Springboard in my 6th grade accelerated Language class. We are working on transferring over to common core. We have one more year of AIMS and then it is common core for the whole district. Our K, 1 are already doing common core. All of us will be added next year. We are also learning Infinite Campus for report cards and gradebook. Too many new things at once as usual but I am glad we are moving forward. On our campus we have about 9 openings because of different staff life changes like retirements and husband transfers to other states.

Our testing system will be changing, too, with the change to common core. We had online field tests for our students on modified testing this year, with the plan being for all tests to be online next year except those in the very lowest groups (ie, my students!)

Testing will be the last week of school and there will be no retests. Results will be delayed because of the new norming that will be done.

Really excited about having a PE teacher! One less class I have to plan for and manage, and possibly may mean I will actually have planning time during the school day!

Just found out we will be doing our state assessments at the actual end of the year instead of 6-8 weeks before school is out. emoticon We've been asking for that for years!

Are we there yet?

We are changing to common core for next year. We found out yesterday that our alternative school will be getting a PE teacher 4 days per week for K-8, so I won't have to also be the PE teacher anymore! Yay, planning time!

Due to issues and concerns this year, I may be getting a new assistant next year. She hasn't had her meeting with the principal yet, and neither have I, so we'll see how things go!

I think I will be teaching all students who take extend 1 next year (lowest testing level) instead of having a mix of Extend 1 and Extend 2. Curious to see what new testing looks like. We did the field tests for Extend 1 and 2. Ex 1 was pretty much the same as what we do now, but Ex 2 was all online.

Our 6th grade will be departmentalized and I will have a homeroom for the first time in many, many years (I teach math, science, and technology). Our 7/8 grades are going to a 1-to-1 iPad deployment!

Me, having my own room!
Many new teachers, some yet to be hired. We had 3 retirements and 5 teachers who moved buildings.
We've also put together a "bullying task force" to put together a plan to address the issue school wide.
