I fit in exercise during the week by waking up 30 minutes earlier than I normally would and doing a different workout DVD each day of the week. At first it was really difficult, but it actually got me in the routine of going to bed earlier and then getting up wasn't so difficult. I now have a really great sleeping routine worked out along with my workout routine! It's a great way to start my day! I don't have to think about working out once school is over and I'm too exhausted to even move and it keeps me motivated to stay on track the whole day because I don't want my workout to be a waste.

Loving the 6am yoga classes my YMCA offers on Monday and Friday, as well as the 5:30am cycle class on tuesdays. My workouts are covered for 3 days out of the week, with little thought about when/how I am going to get it in!

Other days, I walk or do a strength routine. I try to get to the Y in the evenings when my girls have soccer for other classes. My goal is a minimum of 20 minutes daily.

Since our small alternative school doesn't have a PE teacher, I am the PE teacher for my kids. Last year, I took that as planning time and my TA ran the PE time. This year, the kids cannot handle that much unstructured time, so I am leading the class through a 20 minute strength and stretching routine followed by a few laps around the gym. They then work on specific physical skills or play games together. I have lost my little bit of planning time, but it was really disruptive to our day if the kids came back from PE in such a state that they couldn't work.

Since school started, I've mostly been exercising on the weekends. Sometimes I'll sneak in a half hour in the evenings before bed. I have to start getting up at 4 am to get in a workout before school. During the day, I don't really have time. Every recess is spent on something for school. Lunch is my sanity break.

This year they upped our contract time to 7 hrs and 45 minutes a day from 6 hours - I must say that was in intense change because I still have the same 2-3 hours worth of work on my own time that I did before. I also only work 4 days a week so I get my nearly 40 hours all in in 4 days - 2 days are 12 hour days and 2 days are 7 1/2 hour days. I should mention, I teach Adutls - GED class and college prep classes so we work around their schedules and do not follow the same schedule as the other schools. I work 2 evenings a week along with a full day schedule so I get Friday off as we never have students on Friday so one teacher can handle it. I like to get in about 8-10 hours of exercise a week - 14 would be idea (2 hours on average a day but not always possible) I have a flex pass at our Y - I have a 6:15 class each morning Monday through Thursday and then on Tuesday and Thursday I do 2 classes after work and on Friday I have 3 classes, Saturday I have 2 classes and we bike to the Farmer's Market and Sunday they have 1 class. I hope to add weights to Monday Wednesday morning if I can get organized and not have to go home to get ready. I have to be at work at 8. I always stay late enough to have everything ready as I hate early preps.

My youngest also started middle school this year so both my boys are on secondary school schedule and leave early - the older one drives the younger one and thank goodness for the younger one who has excellent independence and responsibility skills - he gets up by own alarm and showers and then wakes his older brother who practically needs an air horn to stir and then dresses and goes and fixes both of their breakfasts - it works and I can be at the Y and not worry.

This week I made M, W and Friday classes but had to skip Tuesday and Thursday due to a broken heater in the Y pool and Boy Scout Popcorn sales.

I've been doing really well with getting to the gym before school! Later in the fall and winter, when my CSA pickup ends, I will get back into Tuesday night yoga.

We just started back to school last week....and I planned my week to include exercise like I had planned my classes! ~ So far so good....altho each day I have my initial plan for exercise and then a back up plan just in case something comes up (It's working for me!!!!)
At the Secondary School that I work at, there's a weight room with treadmills etc that I'm hoping to use once the weather turns later this fall. We get wind and rains here that blow people over...so I know I'll need alternative plans to replace my cycling!

I use a lot of technology to help. I have a smartphone with the Spark ap, and I use the work's gmail calendar to make an appointment for myself (which is also linked up with my phone) so that I get annoying reminders about my "appointment" with myself to exercise.

Also, I have colleagues that I only see during the school year, and we try to encourage one another. It kind of cancels out any extra scheduling nightmares to have so much support around me, especially as we get close to our regional 5k, which almost everyone participates in at my school.

Finally, since I miss my family terribly during the school year, we do things together that combine fitness and quality time, like taking a walk, swimming at the local college, or throwing a football around. Works for me!

I used to be a like a lot of people here - had to work out in the morning. But then I joined a gym that's between work and my house, I take my workout clothes with me, and I stop at the gym before I get home. It has been working for me.

We started school Thursday and I was so excited that I worked out both Thursday and Friday before I went to school. However, Saturday and Sunday have been consumed by school work. I am finally feeling like I am in a good place, and will be able to work out tomorrow, and enjoy time at the fair with my children! WOOHOO!

Suggestions for those with stairs at school:

Climbing stairs is an awesome exercise, and burns lots of calories in a short amount of time, but perhaps because of this tends to be short in duration.

Most experts suggest trying to keep your heart rate elevated for longer to increase your fitness. Perhaps you can walk around the block for 5 minutes before you climb the stairs.

Also, climbing the stairs again at lunch time could double your calorie burn from just doing it in the mornings only.

I do agree it's easier when the kids get a little older. I get to school much earlier and can get something done before the chaos begins!

Something miraculous happened this year! My 11 year old son stated middle school and all the independence strategies we have been working on with have fallen into place. I get up at 4:45 and take care of my dog. I start my workout at 5am. I am doing 35 minutes on the elliptical and three Coach Nicole workouts. I do Bootcamp, New You Bootcamp, and something else I have chosen from Coach Nicole that works that same part of the body. My son showers the night before and gets his things ready. He gets up from his alarm, eats breakfast (good Spark habit), gets dressed, brushes his teeth, and has plenty of time to come downstairs and spend some time with me. (Mostly because I am watching Glee during my workout) He watches the clock. Gets a sweaty kiss and hug from Mom and heads out to the bus stop. After school he is out for cross country, so I have an hour after school to prep for the next day. It is an amazing lifestyle! I am getting to school an hour before my class comes so I can get a few things accomplished and be on time for early morning meetings. I miss riding with my son to school. He went to the school where I teach so we have been carpool buddies for 6 years. However, I am excited about his new found independence and mine, too! I have less work to bring home. I am getting my workout in each day! I love this new schedule!

I get up at 5a so i can walk on my treadmill. I used to get have a gym membership but I never found time to go. Since I am up early I usually go to sleep around 9p. I record the TV and watch it while I walk. I also have my laptop there so I can do some early morning Sparking.

I never used to like getting up in the morning. But now it is a routine.

I'm on the third floor of my building, which I'm pretty excited about so I can have that extra bit of exercise. But I have no idea how to fit in any real exercise ANYWHERE. Last year was my first year teaching, and I'd get to school around 6 AM and leave usually somewhere between 6-9 PM. By that point I was so incredibly drained that 1.) if it was earlier, I gorged on food or 2.) if it was later, I'd just pass out to do it all over again the next day. Just today I spent thirteen hours in the building, and had to run errands afterwards because the school I'm at this year doesn't have as many supplies. My only ideas to lose weight is to really minimize my calorie intake towards the lower end of my intake range because I just don't know when I could possibly get in even ten minutes of exercise. :(

Hi all!
I MUST workout in the morning or else I have a million excuses as to why I can't get to the gym. If I *do* decide to go work out after school, I make sure I have on my gym clothes before I leave school. That kind of forces me to get my rear to the gym!

I hear some concerns and some great ideas! For those getting to school early, how about bringing a change of clothing and doing something at the school (walking, DVD, etc.) before your official school time? If you're like me, after school might fit better in your plans.
Please look HARD at your schedule and see if you can find at least 15 minutes (or more) a day to get some fitness in!!

This is one of my biggest concerns when school starts. I feel better when I work out in the morning, but I know I will not have time when school starts (I have to be out the door by 6:30 which means I have to be up by 5:30 - getting up earlier than that is damn near impossible for me). I drive right by the gym on the way home so I think I am going to attempt to leave school no later than 3:30 and get to the gym by 4 and spend at least an hour there. They offer classes at 4:30 and 5:30 so that seems to be a great time to get there.

So, I have a plan, now I just need to stick to it.

Check that

I used to work out before school but hubby and I would like to car pool more this year so I will need to be out the door a little after 6:00. Will need to start working out after I get home more often. I am trying to figure out how to start dinner, work out, eat, do dishes, grade papers and relax all before heading to bed. emoticon

My partner teacher and I workout after the kids leave. We do wait until our contractual time is up and sometimes we do have to skip it if we need to conference with a parent. Luckily we have a DVD player and TV in our room and we just pick what type of workout we want to do!

I will also have to fit it in before school or I know it won't happen. I'm planning to join a fitness center in September that's on my way to school. I'm an early riser, so I think I'll be able to get a good 45 minutes in a few mornings a week.

I have to get it done BEFORE the school day starts. Between meetings, after-school tutoring, and nightime grading, evening workouts won't happen! I like the idea of scheduling it like an appointment on my calendar. emoticon

I try to get in a workout before school, so that I can't put it off! This year, my girls have soccer practice near our YMCA 2 evenings a week, and I plan to go to the classes offered there those nights. There are a couple of early-morning Yoga and cycling classes that I may try to incorporate before school as well. I am going to test drive those this week and see if I would have time to get dd to school and get to my school on time after the classes.

I try to workout before school because that seems to be the only time something else doesn't get thrown in the way. Otherwise, right after school. I'm not great about the after dinner time slot, although I do workout then occasionally.

My big problem last year was having to do staff development after school - we had a lot of hours we had to complete and most of the classes offered were only one hour and were across town. By the time I got there, finished the class, and then drove back to my side of town, it was real late.

This summer I completed my hours so hopefully I won't have to do any additional staff development (I can always be told something is mandatory and have to attend). I am planning to do the same thing and go to the gym right after school. We are also talking about having Zumba classes at school twice a week. That would be great - no excuses for not taking the class. We'll see what happens when I return to school in a week!

I believe in taking a positive attitude toward the world. My hope still is to leave the world a little bit better than when I got here.

How do you fit in exercise once school starts back up? Please share your ideas here.

I make a 'virtual' appointment at the gym right after school on my calendar so it gets treated like a dr. appointment, etc. If it is on the calendar, I seem to follow through much better.
