After Ever After by Jordan Sonnenblick
This book is the follow up to Sonnenblick's Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie. DG&D tells the story of a boy who's younger brother is diagnosed with leukemia, and he's learning to cope as well as deal with the pressures of school and girls. After Ever After tells the story from the younger brother's point of view once he has been in remission for 5 years. DG&D is a Grade 6 core novel at the intermediate school I taught at for the past two years, and was wildly popular with most of the boys. When we got in After Ever After, we couldn't keep in on the shelves in our book room.
While it's meant for middle school kids, I highly recommend it to anyone who loves to read- and their sons, too.
ps- if you're not familiar with Sonnenblick, he used to be an English teacher. He wrote Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie after unsuccessfully trying to find a novel about children coping with their sibling's illnesses, to help one of his students who's younger brother was diagnosed with cancer.
