Patanjali's Niyamas include ~

Shaucha ~ purity; cleanliness of both body and mind.

Santosha ~ contentment.

Tapas ~ austerity; learning to be evenly balanced in the mind and not affected by things like hot and cold.

Svadhyaya ~ study of sacred scriptures and exploring the self.

Ishvarapranidhana ~ self surrender; laying your life at the feet of God and trusting in his guidance. As part of this, we spend part of each day in communion with God.

Where the yamas were ways not to be, the niyamas are traits to cultivate in ourselves.

The Yamas in Patanjali's text are these ~

Ahimsa ~ non harming.

Satya - non lying, or truth.

Asteya ~ non stealing.

Brahmacharya ~ being celibate when single, or faithful when married; conserving the life essence.

Aparigraha ~ non greed; not desiring or taking more than we need. The less time we spend on material things, the more time we have for our spiritual practices.

These five traits help us to live yoga off the mat. Sivananda Yoga is a way of living that goes beyond the hatha yoga poses we do. By acting in a way that is not harmful, dishonest, stealing, promiscuous, or greedy, we develop our minds toward a more divine state of being.

Compiled by the Sage Patanjali Maharishi in the Yoga Sutras, the Eight Limbs are a progressive series of steps or disciplines which purify the body and mind, ultimately leading the yogi to enlightenment. These 8 limbs are:

1 - Yamas.....................(Dont's)
2 - Niyamas...................(Do's)
3 - Asanas....................(Postures)
4 - Pranayama.................(Energy Control)
5 - Pratyahara................(Withdrawal of Senses)
6 - Dharana...................(Concentration)
7 - Dhyana....................(Meditation)
8 - Samadhi...................(Superconscious State)

I will explain each step little by little. You'll see!

May God enlighten your path always!
Om & Prem to all,

Narayani.
