Definitely prefer to workout at home. I run three times a week and when it's yucky outside, the basement holds the Dreadmill...I have no excuse. One of the best purchases I ever made. I have a small collection of dumbbells, a fitness ball, simple weight bench, step, some bands, and a number of fitness videos. Been working through P90X this Winter.
I am a bit antisocial and selfconscious about working out in the company of others. I had decent results losing 25 lbs a year plus ago, altho I did gain back at least half of that. ARGH.
Working on dropping the weight again, know what I need to do just need to stick to a plan.
The key is finding what works for you whether it;s at home or the gym and doing it consistently.
Great answers from all...
Take care~

I work out at home. I have a membership to Curves, but lately the only ones that go are about 90-100 pounds and they are all "friends", and I am very uncomfortable there. our YMCA is the same way. It is quite expensive and the only ones who go, are in their own clique. I have a Chuck Norris total gym and a mini trampoline, as well as Leslie Sanone DVDs and enjoy working out while listening to the music I want and not having anyone else laugh when I mess up!!

I prefer to work out of my home. I'd have to drive 30 minutes to get to the gym. That's to much driving since I work from home too.

I work out at home. I can't afford a gym membership and don't really have a way to get to the gym anyway.

I like the idea of belonging to a gym because there's a greater variety of stuff to do and ways to work out. But I'm definitely happier working out at home, even if I have to do the same stuff over and over. When I'm at home, I can sing along to music I'm listening to. It's really cold and icy here in Connecticut right now, so I've been getting my cardio done by playing Dance Dance Revolution on my xbox360. I lost 13 pounds just playing that game. Can't play it at a gym!

I love to exercise at home.... so convenient especially when the weather is cold and nasty and you dont want to leave the house. I definately think it cost way less in the long run, just think once you buy your own equipment you'll always own it. you'll never "own" the equipment in the gym.

Try as hard as you can! Every little bit makes a difference!!!

As much as I would like to join a gym, it is just too expensive for me right now. I love workout DVDs so I use them just about every night. I also walk try to walk with my puppy but with the weather being the way it is, we might not get into a normal routine until the spring. I would love an elliptical machine and treadmill but again, I can't afford to buy either nor do my parents have the room in our house for them!

I work out only at home, it saves me time, money and gives me the privacy I need.
I practice yoga and pilates for 3 hours a week, lift weights for 3 hours a week as well and try to get the same amount of cardio (by walking / running outside). It works for me and keeps me happy :-)

I work out at home for convenience. I do 45 mins of strength training and 20 mins of cardio, for a total of 65 mins of exercise daily. Although I don't log it, I also keep a daily food log; I write down everything, including condiments, gum, etc.

My strength training consist of a 45 minute dvd, by Denise Austin, Pilates for EVERY Body: The COMPLETE Workout to Strengthen, Lengthen and Tone Your Body. This is an awesome workout and it really does work! Did I mention the benefits to the pelvic floor, ladies?! emoticon

My cardio consist of jumping on a mini-trampoline; unconventional yes, but it burns tons of calories! I'm cautious when it comes to cardio because of my back (I've had surgery), but both exercises seem to fit the bill for me!

HUGS,
Melissa

I am working out at home right now. I had no excuse to not use the exercise equipment at our condo complex, usually I was the only one there anyway. But I got burned out and started going there later and later every day. So I started using my Leslie Sansone tapes again. Believe it or not, I am actually burning more calories using the tapes instead of going to the exercise room. I now can also admit it to myself that working out on the equipment was actually easier than doing her tapes. She really kicks butt if you put your all into her tapes. I lost 5 inches from my hips and got a much flatter stomach from doing her tapes. You ought to try them.

I work out at home only, I hate the gym, I am a germ freak lol. All those sweaty bodies, ick, so I do everything in my weight loss journey here at my own home.

I have a recumbant bike which I love. It is an easy on the back cardio workout for me. I have a treadmill but I do not like it, it is hard on my knees, so my hubby uses that & I use the bike!

I have a stability ball & weights, & I do a lot of the SparkPeople work out videos with coach Nicole.

I also just ordered the "30 day shred" dvd that so many are talking about, & I plan to add that to my home workout arsenol.

And dancing!! It is something I can do while entertaining my children & it doesn't feel like a work out but it is!

I have lost 7 pounds since Jan. 5th.

In the summer, I am on a golf league & I walk outside.

So losing weight is possible at home, & you don't have to wait for machines at the gym, or feel inferior of all the skinny lil people working out lol. You can do whatever it is you like & not worry about who sees what ya look like doin it!

I only work out at home. There's no excuse not to do it that way!! I have a treadmill, ab roller, leg magic machine, and a mini trampoline. I also use dumbells (5#), and Turbo Jam DVD's.. It's like I have my own little gym at home.

I work 10 hour days and going to a gym after work would just take me away from home even longer that that. I tried it, I wasn't feeling it at all...

I only work out at home. In the warmer months, I walk/jog around my house. It is actually a stress reliever for me. I just put in the ipod and go and try not to think about the work day I just left behind. I also LOVE to swim in our pool in the summer and it's great exercise. I also have a stationary bike that I use in the winter months as well as several different workout video tapes and DVDs. We also have a weight bench and free weights which I use for strength training. I love working out at home. I can do my work outs when it is convenient for me and not based on someone else's time schedule. Definitely more economical too! I am considering joining a "boot camp" class that has begun in my town recently, but again, that would be on someone else's time schedule and that's not always possible with my schedule.

I work out at home and go to the gym on occasion... and I have some encouraging words for ya. :) I can not say this is true for everyone, but I find that working out to an aerobic DVD at home makes my workout more of a challange. I believe this is because the video sets the pace (not me) and I just have to keep up, yet when I go to the gym I can slow down without thinking about it sometimes and stop without feeling like I am doing an incomplete workout. When I work out to a DVD I KNOW when I am quitting before a workout is complete and that feeling can keep me going sometimes. Not to worry...there is nothing wrong with working out at home. :)

I worked out at Bally's and another club about 2 years ago for a month-long tryout period. I liked the eliptical and some of the classes, but didn't think it was worth the cost and the commute on a regular basis. Plus, I picked up some kind of strange respiratory infection and was pretty sick for a week. I have a sneaking suspicion it was from using the same equipment everyone else was using, without sanitizing it. That's a concern.

For the last year I've been walking a lot at a local park and working out at home. The bulk of my weight loss is from doing that and I'm going to keep it up all the way to goal. I also like getting new and different exercise dvds from the local library to mix it up.

I run at a park near my house and do strength training at home. When I rededicated myself to getting in shape, I had planned on using the gym at my apartments but I find that leaving the house to workout becomes a reason not to do it. I can get my workout in at any time if I do it at home!

I lost the baby weight after both my kids just working out at home. I did a lot of the Buns of Steel videos back then, and I walked on a treadmill at home.
Even though I now belong to a gym, I still work out at home about 1/2 the time - I now do free weights at home, use the exercise ball and a resistance band, and do Tracy Mallet's Sexy in 6 DVD's for cardio. (Several 6 minute circuits or aerobic-like routines)

I don't want to spend the money on a gym, and enjoy working out at home. My work out of choice is actually the video game Dance Dance Revolution. I first tried it in 2002, and I got hooked. I bought the home system and thanks to my husband modifying my footpads for me, I can work out longer on them. I try to do 30 minutes a day. I want to get a WII so I can try the WII fit. My friends really love it.

I don't just use video games though. I also like walking out side. When I want to watch tv and work out. I have a step I'll use. I also have a yoga mat for stretching, a ball, and a variety of hand weights of strength training. I try to vary it up when I do get tired of DDR. I want to get more exercise videos as well.

My best motivation is the pedometer I wear all day. I try to get at least 10,000 steps a day and I mark my progress by using stickers on a calendar for a visual. On the days I do get over 10k, I put a sticker on the calendar.

I have lost 25 lbs. just by working out at home. I pretty much do videos only. I have 2 that I rotate every day. I have a Tae bo tape, and a Denise Austin tape. The Denise Austin has cardio, strength for upper and lower body, as well as Abs. I also have 2 sets of dumbbells that I use. 3lbs and 5lbs. If I couldn't work out at home, I don't know where I'd be weight wise now. I get up early in the morning, so I work out before my kids get up. That is the only chance I get to work out. I do take lots of walks outside, and sometimes in the mall on my lunch hour. Also have started riding my bike more now that my 5 year old daughter has learned how to ride. YOU CAN DO IT!

I mainly workout at home since it gives me my time to make it work. Then I am not tying up my money and feeling guilty or pressured to make it to a gym. Thats me though and some need the gym. I do occassionally take a class through where I work though. I have a treadmill so use that for most my cardio. I do like to walk outside when weather is nice and allergy season isn't bad. I also use Walk Away the pounds and pilate cds to change it up. I use the exercises on spark too. I can't do much strength training right now since I found out I have tendinitis in my wrist, elbow, and shoulders of my right arm.Hopefully after therapy they will help me to learn exercises to more safely strengthen my arms.

I've only worked out at home and outdoors during my weight loss. I like it because you can do it whenever you get a free moment and there are NO EXCUSES about making it to the gym. To me it sets you up for success emoticon

The first 6 months I had been doing mostly powerwalking on the trail near our home or walking around the neighborhood and weight/strength training at home using handweights and my own body for resistance. I also incorporated an exercise ball into my routine.

Just recently we acquired an elliptical so now i'm continuing my strength training and using the elliptical for cardio most days.

I love it emoticon .

I do go to a kickboxing/aerobics class a few times a week. Otherwise, I have a treadmill, urban rebound, and lots of exercise DVDs. I really need to use them more often. I had a membership at our local community center and I canceled it, because I never used it.

Thanks for all the ideas!

I work out at home. I have an elliptical trainer and a Soloflex machine. I also walk my dog daily, weather permitting.

I workout at home. I find it easier and more flexible to workout at home. I can ride my bike, run on the treadmill and do weights while watching tv in the comfort of home. I don't miss driving to the gym and the possibility of leaving something at home.

I lost over 150 pounds only working out at home. Now that I work for Curves, I do there workout at least 3 times a week. But still much of my exercise occurs at home through work out videos like Turbo Jam, P90X and Hip Hop Abs. I also walk outside and do my own strength training routines.

hey there! I workout at home too! Ocassionally I do go over to the little workout room they have in my apartment complex but mostly I love my DVDs!! I also have a swiss ball and just bought a pair of 5 pound dumbbells to use with my biggest loser power sculpt DVD. I also have a set of resistance bands that go with some of my billy blanks DVDs. So yes, you can totally workout at home alone and be successful! Personally I think being able to workout at home has been integral to my success. It would take me too long to get to a gym and i think i'd have problems motivating for that. Have a great weekend!

I work out at home, I will be moving to a gym part time in 3 months, but only because it is a benefit at my job and free. I workout to multiple videos at home, I own an elliptical trainer (as much as we paid for it, I better use it..even though my husband wasn't listening when I said I wanted a treadmill) I also have several different sets of dumbbells, elastic bands, a step, a kayak, a bicycle, and a great pair of running shoes. You don't need a gym to get fit, you can do it anywhere, anyhow. I run, I kayak, I kickbox (at home video) I do aerobics (at home video) I ride my bike, pulling a little trailer with my 2 very young boys in it, I walk laps around the park pushng the baby while my older son plays with his cousins, I go out and use the elliptical here and there, I've lost almost 24 pounds in the past 4 months without stepping foot in a gym.

I'm only using the gym membership to try spinning, more weight training, and any other classes that sound interesting. I don't need it for cardio.

I've been to a gym about two times in my life, and would much rather work out at home. All the times I've lost weight, I've always lost it doing a combination of strength training and walking. Every time. Lost between a range of about 40-60lbs each time. And I've done this 4 times. (Have 4 kids). Only this time is actually my 5th time because I lost almost all my weight after having my son and then gained it all back again. emoticon But yes, you can definately lose all your weight and get into the same shape you'd get into in a gym. The body doesn't know where it's getting it's exercise. It's going to respond whether you're doing shoulder presses in a gym or doing them with free weights, stretchy bands or on a machine at home. Same goes for walking. The treadmill is only mimicking the natural steps of walking we already do. The gym is great if that's where you want to workout, but you don't have to be there to get results. If you need more proof that you can get in just as good shape without all the high-tech equipment, watch that Rocky movie where he fights the russian guy- remember where and how he trained? That movie inspires me everytime! Lol. emoticon emoticon

Fact: however long it'll take you to reach your goals, just remember that the time's going to pass anyway, so either you'll stay where you are now, or you'll be the "you" you dream about today:)

The only thing stopping me is me!

I tried the gym and didnt care for it.
I have done all the work on my own, with a treadmill and now a exercise bike, I have videos, a stepper, and weights, and my Ipod.
I do prefer to walk outside as well, but the treadmill is not a clothes hanger either. I will be using it today, since its chilly and rainy outside.

Hello! I don't go to the gym either, I think I would just waste the money because I wouldn't go regularly. So, in the beginning of the year, I paid a personal trainer to come to my house and show me how to work out with the things I had in my house. It was a great investment. Now I can go in the garage and have a variety of things to do. I did purchase a few items like a body bar and a weighted ball. Good luck!

I work out most of the time at home. Only go to the gym on the odd occassion.
I run outside which is a great way to burn cals. I've also got a stationary bike and stepper in the house which I use (both cheap but effective). I have a mat and stability ball also that I use for strenght training and two 2.5lbs dumbells.
Its working for me!

II would love to hear from others that are getting fit by working out at home only. I believe it is possible to not step foot in a gym but I feel discouraged when I read about how many go to a gym to work out.
Please anyone that has achieved results at home please comment! I am interested in hearing anything about your experience. Thanks in advance for any replies.
