Something clicked for me when someone mentioned the "Self Prophecy". Because if I sit here and think about what I want my goal weight to be, I dont "see a number" Because it just seems impossible.
But I really dont think it is impossible if I do a little at a time. I have my goals set up for 10%. For now I am focused on getting myself out of 160's then I will be focused on reaching my next 10% goal. Even if this takes me the next 6 months (or longer) I am really okay with it! Because I think it takes me time to " accept" that I CAN do it. (does this makes sense??)

I'm so glad to hear you've lost 16 pounds! emoticon I had a baby 8 months ago today. I have not lost any weight since June, but I have not been tracking or exercising. I got this thread in an email from SP and you've inspired me to get with the program. I am also 5'2" and my goal is 120. The lightest I have been in the past 8 years is 117. At that time, I was working out with a trainer 5 days a week, and I had 11 % body fat. My trainer said I probably could not go any lighter than that without losing muscle. So I do think ideal weight should be calculated on a case by case basis. emoticon

Good word of advise.
We get enough of that info from the magazines.
No wonder people become anorexic. All that is asked of us is to be healthy and fit whatever the size.
The important thing to watch is the BMI so we know our ideal weight for our age.

Glad things are going well! I too find myself discouraged when I know I have SO much to lose to get to my goal weight, nevermind what the charts say. So my ticker is set at 10 pounds. I try to look at it as a small goal and will work on the next ten pounds later. Not that I'm making much progress...but at least it isn't so intimidating.

I'm here to hopefully inspire other and have other inspire me. I don't want to convince someone that has small bones and muscles that they look fine at 5'2" and a hundred 136 pounds. I also don't want someone to try to convince me that I need to weigh 105 pounds when there is no way that I ever would want to be that small.

We have to respect each other and not think someone else must be fat if she weighs more than us and is the same height.

I'm have large muscles myself. Naturally, running and weight training adds to them so weigh more than I look. I only know from the reaction from medical staff when I get on the scale. I've also asked people that are about the same size as me and they weigh a lot less than me.

I'm currently a size 8 petite in a dress. It's comfortable and I'm 'overweight' by BMI. Yes, I'm Lillian64, I deleted my account by mistake.

At my weight, many women my height would have a lot of weight to lose. I don't know but I see myself as small much of the time although I would like a smaller belly and tighter thighs. I can't imagine losing 20 pounds. I wonder if I even got 30 pounds of fat to lose. My BF home measurement is around 21 so that would give me less than 30 pounds total fat on my body.

Even if the BF measurement is off by 3 percent, I still don't have much in the way of BF. You need to consider your own body, not other people's bodies.

Also, I don't want to be model thin. I want curves and shapely little muscles. I don't want my bones protruding. I find skinny men unattractive and my man says that overly thin women like the ones on runways and on television aren't attractive to him. I think the skinny models are repulsive looking myself.

A hundred and seventeen is a good weight if you're five foot in my book, not five-seven or taller. There are very small framed tall women that don't look gaunt at those weights but they are few and far between.

I want to look good on the track and good in a swimsuit. My goal isn't going to be your goal.

Hi Amber,
Try staying off sugar for three weeks and along with drinking water drink a one part tropicana orange juice with seven parts water. you can also add crystal lite to that water. I have had the same problem as you, but have been on the program for 7 weeks and have lost 20lbs. I do not eat breakfast at all but drink the H2orange, if i get hungry I eat peanuts or peanutbutter cracker SLOWLY. I eat anything I want (hamburgers hotdogs steaks french fries)but only when i am really hungry and know what I really want to eat.
Good luck.

Hey AMBER808
How are you doing. Did you figure out what 5% is. 118 is mine. Lets hit the road. I will be at the gym tonight. I wanted Ice cream last night and didn't because I had it the night before.
So I had this thought with my friens Cindy. You can't lose weight just because you bought a:
1. low carb cook book
2. a membership at curves or the gym
3. lots af fruits and veggies.
Lets add to the list

Hey VIVIAN you are so right - and there is even a name for it!!!!

It's called the Self Fulfilling Prophecy

Basically - if you think you are going to fail then you will as you have no self belief that you will succeed - when you believe you are going to fail you have already made the decision in your mind that you will not do it, so you don't.....

Instead tell yourself - I can and will do this and you should see the difference that you can and will achieve your goals.

"The miracle isn't that I finished; the miracle is I had the courage to start" John 'The Penguin' Bingham.

"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out..." Robert J. Collier

"To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe." Anatole France

Amy, if you THINK something is impossible - then you're right, it will be impossible... A huge percentage of being successful at weight loss (and at anything in life) is mental. If we believe that we CAN achieve what we set out to do and tap into the huge wealth of inner strength that each and every one of us has, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.

I am also 5' 2". My heaviest weight was around 148lbs (i didn't really weigh myself back then so not sure). I lost about 25lbs purely by changing my mindset and then my eating habits, no exercise. I did this after readign Allen Carr's easy weigh to loose weight and I would recommend it to anyone. I maintained for about a year. I then went to Peru on a trek and had to eat a lot (and what I was given!) to keep energy up. When I got home I continued to eat like this and the weight started to creep back up. I decided to make a change and lost a few lbs through eating less and random exercising. Then I found spark and that where it really began.
TRACK your food. It makes you accountable!
Find an EXERCISE you love. When I started I had never run a day in my life, last week I ran my first 10k!
LOVE yourself, you're worth it and YOU and you alone can do it!
Good luck!

Wow, all the folks on here have been giving great advice! Personally, I've never agreed with my "recommended" weight range, even when i first joined a WW at 13 and they told me I should weigh about 95 pounds (I was 4'11). I was 132 and picked 115 as my goal weight. I got myself down to 120 but then maintained at 124 until about 5 years ago. Now I'm 5' and I think the high end of my range is 115, but I know how I felt at 124 and I felt good. Also, don't forget the whole muscle weighs more than fat thing. I think I could be happy at 130 if i'm all buff. The scale has been so drilled into our thinking that no one told us it doesn't have to be the only measure, and in fact it shouldn't be. Listen to your body. It will tell you what it likes. Good luck!!

I liked the advice below...Another thing that really helps me is to think before I eat. I think "what will I be doing for the next 3 hours?" If I plan to work out...then I'll eat something with a good mixture of carbs for energy and protein. If I plan to sit around and do much of nothing...their is no sense in carb loading. Ya know? I hope that makes sense.

I lost 154 pounds in about 14 months. Then I got really comfortable....got sick quite a few times over a 4-5 month period...and stopping exercising as much and eating well. So I ended up gaining 20 pounds back. No one else could tell...but it drove me crazy!! Anyways...I regrouped...and decided it was time for a change.

I added to my workout video collection and created new workout rotations for myself. Variety is key. Your body can get used to certain exercises, so it really likes to be challenged. So the more diverse your workout routine the better. Same goes with the food! I've been zig zagging for a little over 2 months now. Not sure if you've heard of it...but here is the premise.

If you consistently eat the same amount of calories everyday, your metabolism gets used to it. So by varying your calories throughout the week, your metabolism is constantly guessing, rising and falling. Another great reason to do this is because it allows your body to create surpluses and deficits. This allows you to starve fat and feed muscle. It's helped me tremendously. I lost 11 pounds the first month and 7 this month. So I'm ecstatic! And I'm eating more then I ever have. I'm varying between 1350-2000 calories each week. It's awesome because I feel like I'm cheating on my high calorie days.

Also...for anyone who has hit a stopping point, I ALWAYS recommend adding more strength training to their routine. The more the merrier. For each pound of muscle you add to your body you burn an extra 30-50 calories per hour. That adds up to a lot of calories!! Muscle is the key to a high metabolism and keeping weight off for a lifetime.

Another key componenent to getting the weight off that I had gained was to stop weighing myself to often. I just got too obsessed. Now I measure my progress more so with inches, how my clothes fit and how I feel about being me. :) I only weigh every 30 days or more.

OK check this out. I eat in color. My husband says brown is a color and I just look at him and think OH just eat your reds and yellows (strawberries and pineapple). If you eat heavy one day eat light the next. If you are going to eat heavy one day eat light the day before and the day after. We all know what happens if we had thanksgiving every day. Now this is the trick I find really works. Befor you eat something answer this question. What nutrition does this bring to my body? Breaded chicken; you must ask what does the chicken do for me, the breading the fat it was fried in. How many additives and preservities does it have? if you are happy with your answers then eat it. after you eat it if it is a fun food then rate it. so worth it, ok or not worth the calories and mentally cross it off you to eat food. I have a lot of things on that list. My daughter and I rank culvers flavor of the day this was and don't include concrets as a choice. If we did then everyday would be a good day to eat culvers.
Hope this helps.
Lynn

I was close to that weight too about 3-4 years ago..
I did get down to 152 a year or so ago, but that was by using Slimfast products. I maintained for a little while without them, but then the holidays came and I just got too comfortable & let myself have whatever I wanted.

I've talked to my doctor about it and he acted like it was no big deal. He wasn't concerned about my weight at all & just told me to exercise 3 times a week at least.

I guess I'm not too bad off.. it's just super frustrating. One day I'm happy with where I am and where I'm going, and the next day I'm like RRRRG!
I feel like I need to be super strict to succeed & I'm just going to make myself crazy obsessed over it. I don't want that to happen.

But then I could say to myself "Okay, do you want to stay at the weight you are now? No? Well you need to do it then!"

oy..

I love your picture. I wish I was that strong and had that much flex.
For dinner I would have a big salad with lots of color in the veggies you put on it. Watch the dressing. put a low fat protien on it or something clost to that. I love shrimp. You could do tuna. Not tuna salad but chunk tuna. Have some fresh strawberries with it. I would call the pizza a heavy meal because of the crust so then I would have something light for dinner. Track your calories and see how many you have left. You could do one of those WW meals and add extra veggies. no corn or peas. I really have to watch teh cheese thing because I would eat it at every meal and replace all protiens with cheese. I have to limit it because it is a high fat protien. You coulf also have a salad with fresh strawberries and pecans. I am starting to get hungry. BTW I do the 5% thing.

Amber,

Please, before you give up on yourself, talk to your DOCTOR about what is a healthy weight for you. Some random web site doesn't know you, or your background or medical history. If you have always been on the heavier side, then 110 lbs might not be a realistic goal.

Also, you can focus on smaller goals. First, work on losing 10% of your body weight. If you're 160, then that's 16 pounds. Once you make it to 144, then focus on losing then next 10%, which would be 14.4 lbs...and so on, until you get to a weight that you and your doctor are comfortable with.

Please, please don't feel hopeless...even if you lose "only" ten pounds, you will still probably be healthier at 150 than 160! (Speaking as someone who is 5'2" and last July weighed 200 pounds, I know what I'm talking about...I may not be at a healthy weight yet, but I'm MUCH healthier than I was last summer!)

Now you know...and knowing is half the battle! (The other half is lasers.)

Don't ever think this is impossible!! I've totally been in your shoes. At 5'3, 2 year ago I was 7 pounds shy of 300 pounds. And now here I am...almost 160 pounds lighter!! So I know you can get their. Focus on small goals, like losing 5% of your weight or dropping your body fat. I try not to weigh myself often, because I used to get really discouraged. Focusing on how I felt, how my clothes fit me, etc really helped me to not feel like my journey was impossible. Support and encouragement from friends on here and over on the WOWY boards really helped to get my through as well.

Hey
????sammmich?????
where did those extra carbs come from? You just took my snack to a meal. The only reason why I say anything is because it's the thinking that sometimes prevents us from reaching our goals. I am refining me eating to max nutrition to calorie. I get oats in the morning.
Does anyone remember the e-mail that was going around about God gave you angle food cake and the devil made devils food cake, God gave you fresh fruit and the Devil made pies. The way I don't regain the 45 pounds I lost is through clean house thinking. There is nothing wrong with peananner sammies but when I log it into sparks cal. counter I run out of calories to fast.
Got to love it. Eat your peananers naked.

I have a love/hate with sparks food tracker. I hate tracking my food I eat. It takes me forever but it is the best way of really looking at what you are eating. It I don't want to track it I don't eat it. If you think the whole world will say wow how can she eat 1/2 of a 1/2 gallon of ice cream the answer is with a spoon. I really think about it after these strange and common binges. So I sit down and start thinking how many 1/2 cup servings are in 1/4 gallon of ice cream and how good was it. I now rank flavors as not worth it and if I can't limit it don't eat it. Moose tracks is my weakness with magic shell because there just isn't enough calories in the ice cream. LOL I have been trying really hard to log every thing and have set a goal and reward of hip hop abs when I get to 115. Check out smart balance peanut butter on bananas as a snack. I have a jar on my desk at work and every day I bring in some kind of fruit to put under it. 1T. can go a long way on apples and you get lots of apple fiber in or banana goodness. You can do it and we are here for you both good and bad times. BTW I am on a no ice cream in the house for this month. Lynn emoticon
I just finished reading the last two post and I love avocados and raw nuts. I get all my nuts from the baking asile

Amber, my ideal weight for my height, according to the charts is 90-105 or so. I'm 4'11". At 108, when I was sick, several docs told me I could not afford to lose anymore. I look and feel kicka$$ at 116-119. So my goal is 119. Unless I hit a weight in the 120's that looks and feels awesome to me. Don't let some "one size fits all" chart dictate how you should set your goal. Keep going, in small increments til you hit your sweet spot. I really don't so much care what I weigh, as long as it looks good in a size 6!!!!!!

Rule #1: Remove the word "impossible" from your vocabulary! You said yourself that you'd lost a lot of weight on your own over the past 3-4 years. You've already come so far to give up now. Just keep eating right, exercising regularly and go by how you feel and look to yourself! Don't obsess over the number on the scale, it really doesn't mean that much.
Drink plenty of water, eat plenty of high-quality foods, and don't be afraid of the healthy fats! One thing that has always helped me bust through plateaus, aside from variety in my foods & workouts, is incorporating a good amount of good fats that come from fish, seeds, nuts, avocados, and certain oils. You need the good fats to lose fat. emoticon

Stick with it!

it's not impossible. you can do it. I'm 5'1 and I weigh 170. my goal is 125. I have not been there in 27 years, but I will get there this time. how do I know, well I found this site like you. there is great information and support here. I'm not dieting this time, It's a lifestyle change. I eat a high fiber diet now, I never did that before. I count my calories, I have between 1200-1500 a day, I eat healthy. I exercise 3 to 4 days a week. and I get up and move around the house more. I write down my goals and keep them where I can see them every day. when I mess up I don't hate myself, I stop and learn from the mistake and I think positive every day. sometimes it is hard but I come on here and there is plenty of support. emoticon
I will help you in any way I can if you want, just ask. emoticon emoticon

I did like taking classes @ the gym for a while. But I really can't afford a membership at this stage in my life. :/
I've been lifting weights & doing TaeBo dvds on my own in my apartment.

That's the thing though...I don't drink soda. I drink water all day, everyday. That's all that I drink! Even when I go out to eat, I'll get a water.
I don't eat fast food. I pack my own healthy lunches & snacks everyday for work.

I guess I just need to give it more time is all...
Thanks for the support everyone.

nothing is impossible. i'm way overweight for my height and have been working on it for a year and just started with sparkpeople about 3 months ago. since then, i have found more motivation and support here than at the gym. i've been watching what i eat, trying to eat healthy, exercising at least once a day, mostly 2 times. people on here are great for support and motivation. it's a long hard struggle but youi have to keep your mind positive. and i don't mean you positively won't loose weight...lol
hope this helps.

Amber, it's not impossible. You should read some of the inspirational stories of the people on here. Some have lost more than 100 lbs! I was struggling with losing weight, too. The idea of going on a diet was freaking me out, and I just couldn't motivate myself enough to keep going to the gym. A friend of mine took me to "bikini boot camp". We work out every morning Monday-Friday, and it is INTENSE. I've never worked so hard in my life, but it's great, because I have friends to keep my going, to keep my running that last few steps and push that last push up. It's only been 2 weeks, and I already notice that my love handles aren't folding over my jean tops! I haven't weighed myself since I started, but it's the way I feel. If you can find something like this near you, maybe join a class at the gym where you are in a group and have an instructor that just won't let you quit and will push you past where you want to stop, it is amazing the results you will feel in a very short time. I needed to have that person that would push me hard, because I couldn't do it myself. And the diet? It ain't no big thing... cut out the fat, eat smaller portions 6 times a day. That's it. Goes hand in hand with SP and I feel great! I would recommend it to anybody.

It's not what you have, it's what you do with it that counts.

Gah...I feel like this is going to be impossible for me to get down to a healthy weight for my height of 5'2".

I've lost a bunch of weight on my own in the past 3-4 years, basically just cutting out all of the crazy binges on tons of bad food. But now I just feel kind of hopeless. The ideal weight for 5'2" is 110-135lbs. (Different sites give different numbers but that is close) Right now I'm at 160lbs.
I just don't really feel like my body is meant to go that LOW. I feel like I will need to workout like an insane amount, or pretty much develop an eating disorder.

It's freaking me out. I really want to change. I'm not comfortable in my clothes at all. I just feel overwhelmed big time.

Please give me some advice or anything. Thank you so much.
