I know that when I am 110 pounds I look thin but if I go over 120 I look bigger than I am because I am short. Which my goal is 110 pounds, my clothes fit better at that weight and I have more energy, I hope to be that weight by june or July.

You could be right. I think my healthiest weight is probably around 110-115, but I also know my body fat percentage is pretty high. My problem area is the belly... I gotta watch the fat intake and get the abs toned!! I'm sure I'll lose at least 5 pounds when I get that taken care of. Need to pull out my Pilates DVD's - those made a HUGE difference for me in the past.

I didn't know my bodyfat when I was a teenager weighing under 120 pounds, but I was too thin. No TOM, always cold, getting weaker instead of stronger with exercise. You need to find your healthier weight. It might be higher than you think. I'm 5'2" and my healthiest weight is between 125 and 130. I could do heavy work all day, eat as I wished and still have energy to work out and take care of my family.

Maintenance range. 127 to 132.

I have one of those Tanita scales that tells you the body fat. Mine says I'm between 24% and 25%!!! How can that be right??

I don't remember, but I think I was 17% or 18% before I got pregnant.

Becka, when I was in prime shape - 14% bodyfat, running 40plus miles a week, triathalon training, I never got below 113 and I'm barely 5ft tall. It just wasn't going to happen. I think you need to concentrate on factors other than the scale, how you feel, how your clothes feel, etc.

Thanks everyone. I do lift every time I am at the gym. I currently run 35 min to 70 min depending on what time allows. I've increased my speed to 6.2 mph and use a "hill" incline.

I've changed up my diet a bit, I usually am on the low end of the scale on protein, but I know I get my fiber every day. I'll tweak my exercise a bit... Maybe I am going overboard?

My advice is to try new things. I am 5í 1 & Ĺ and while I was loosing I ate about 1150-1250 cals. I now eat between 1250 and 1400 (mostly the low end). I canít really change that much because I gain weight to easy. Everyone is different. Make sure youíre getting in your protein and fiber and try new foods! If what you are doing isnít working try something new. You may want to up your intensity while working out or increase your time. I have also found that adding weight lifting did wonders for me. Good Luck!

Hmmmm.... the other thing I started which is really working now is calorie cycling. There's an SP team for it and tons of information on the team page to tell you how to do it. Once I had my calorie range I was able to get going with the cycling and I'm seeing a real difference.

You may want to go to www.freedieting.com and check your metabolism under the calorie tab. I was having the same problem and found I was actually way too low on my calories and literally starving myself fat. My body was hoarding all the calories because I wasn't meeting the calories needed just to function let alone exercise myself silly.

I'm not sure WHAT I'm doing wrong.

I'm 5'0" and 29 years old (turn 30 in 3 weeks). I currently fluctuate between about 118 and 121. I have probably one binge meal a week, but on average I am under 1700 calories a day. I exercise every day. For example, this month I will hit at least 2100 minutes of exercise, most of it running.

Pre-pregnancy I was in the 117ish range, I seem unable to get below that. I really try to watch what I eat. I have a LOT more fresh fruits and veggies... can't seem to get down to the 110 mark.

Help :(

Yes, I started to set my alarm clock at 5:30am to get up and do 1/2hr on the eliptical machine. It has been about 4 days now and the most I have done is hit my snooze button. Boy is my arm sore from that. LMAO. emoticon Ok, seriously, it is only a matter of time before I get out of bed and actual do it.

I am at work by 7 am and I still go to the gym in the morning. Once you start you just don't feel right if you miss a day! It is all about commitment. It really isn't as bad as you would think. If you find something you really enjoy doing it makes it easier. Maybe you could find a gym buddy! I have found that I have made several gym "friends" that make getting ready for work at the gym so much more fun then getting ready at home. Good luck with the exercise. Remember 10 min is better then 0 min so maybe you could take a walk at lunch or do some exercises during a commercial break.

I theory that is a good idea. Unfortuntately my schedule changes. I'm either at work by 10am (which going to the gym before head would work) or by 7:30am which I am not getting up at 4am to do this. Some days I'm off by 3:30-4pm and on those days I usually walk with my dogs for 4-5 miles or go hiking. On other days I work for 7:30am-6:00pm and I'm so tired I just want to veg in front of the TV. It's on those days I need to really get myself going. I'm going to try and go to the gym after I walk with my dogs.

I was in the same situation. I joined a gym 5 months ago and would basically force myself to go after work each day. I was lucky if I even went Monday through Wednesday. So, I knew I had to make some changes. I started to go in the morning before work and have been doing so for a month now. It works out so well. I get my workout down by 8:30 AM, shower at the gym, then head to work. I haven't missed a day (i go mon thru fri) yet and I feel so great. I am full of energy all day. At first, when I was contemplating the idea of waking up earlier I thought it would be impossible but serously, after a min. 8 hour work day who wants to workout? Now I have more time to relax, errands and do things I enjoy.

I don't have machines to help me at home. I have dogs to walk, and I do a few times a week. But, sometimes I'm just so tired when I get home. I belong to a gym, buy I've only gone once since I joined 4 months ago!

I looked at myself in a full mirror today and thought "oh my I am FAT". Time to get this off of me again. So, exercise starts tomorrow. Eliptical in the morning, stairs at lunch and bowflex at night (if I have time). I look AWFUL. Watching what I put in my mouth as well. No more second helpings.

Oh, I can TOTALLY relate to the junk food thing. Thankfully my hubbie and I don't like most of the same junk food. He's more into chips and stuff while I like sweet stuff. He is doing much better about bringing it into the house and hides it when he does. I asked him why and he said he was hiding it from our kids, but I think it was really his sweet way of helping me not fall off the wagon.

Hi everyone. I"m new to this board and I was happy to see a team for us 5'3" and under. I'm 5'0.5" and I'm trying to go from 135 to 110. I've been trying for a few years to lose weight and I've only gained weight.

I could definately use the support regarding staying on track. I try to walk with my dog twice a week for 3 miles and I go hiking once a week as well. I could use some ideas for being more active (even when I'm tired) and for eating better. Eating is my worse habit. I'm a junk food lover. I've tried to not buy the food, but my husband goes out and buys it if I don't and then it's in the house. I have no will power.

I hope to hear from all the shorties on SP!

I had mine done at our local hospital. It's basically a breathing test that takes 5 to 15 minutes depending on how fast the machine gets the readings. Very easy and if you have your doctor do the referral for you, insurance may pay for it. It wasn't expensive anyway, but might as well use the insurance!

The most surprising thing I found was that while I thought I was on a great nutrition plan and wasn't hungry hardly ever, I was sometimes more than 1500 calories under my RMR. I might be a shortie, but I have a pretty high RMR. Once I got within 500 calories of the RMR, weight started coming off-- FINALLY! It was hard to convince myself to eat more, but now that I've started seeing results I'm okay.

DeeSMoose- thanks for the tip. I think I will slowly increase my calories b/c i keep reading 1200 should be the min. The thing with me is that I am satisfied with my diet- I am never starving myself. I have a protein bar or shake or yogurt and fruit for breakfast, lunch is usually grilled chicken breast and salad, dinner is the same or salmon instead of chicken. I have my fruit in between and some kind of granola snack...
but anyways LLBREWSTER, you said something about a resting metabolism test..? This is the second time I've come across that. What exactly is done during this "test" and where would I go to get it done?

The ideal weight formula:
To find your ideal bodyweight, you need to know your desired body fat percentage, your current weight, body fat percentage, and lean mass. Then, to calculate your ideal weight, you simply divide your current lean mass by your percentage of lean mass at
your target body fat percentage.

The formula is:
Current Lean Mass divided by(1 - Desired Body Fat %)

Example:
You are female
Your weight: 106
Your body fat: 26%
Your fat weight: 27.6 lbs. (26% of 106 lbs or 0.26 mutiplied by 106)
Your lean mass: 78.4 lbs. (total weight - lbs. of fat)
Your target body fat percentage: 15% or 0.15
Determine your percentage of lean mass at your target body fat by subtracting your desired body fat from 1: (1 -0.15 = 0.85)
Divide your current lean mass by your percentage of lean mass at your target body fat percentage to yield your ideal weight: (78.4/0.85 = 92.2)

Thus, your ideal weight at 15% body fat is 92.2 lbs.

I'm Joon. I'm 5'.

I have no interest in 110. It brings back nightmares of my youth of starving and exercising excessively and still being over 110. I'll be quite happy with my goal weight in the middle to high 120s and I'm just under 5'2" myself.

I found it helpful when trying to keep my calories
up in the 1200-1500 range to also track my fiber and
calcium and get 5-9 veggies. In order to keep all
of those numbers in the correct range, I had to eat
more, but it is more of the good stuff, less junk.
I'm also 5' 1 and a 1/2"! My long term goal is to
be around 110, I just haven't been there in a long
time, and so I thought small steps were less daunting

DeeSMoose, You're completely right about not going under your needed calories. I had my resting metabolism done and found out I was more that 1000 calories under every day. I was literally starving myself FAT! I know that doesn't make sense but it's true. I wasn't losing weight at all because I'd sent myself into starvation mode. Now I'm on track and doing calorie cycling just to keep my system "guessing" and my metabolism working well.

hi! welcome!!
whatever you do dont go under your calories. once you deprive your body of calories, it stores fat instead of burning calories. so.........stick with atleast 1200 and sometimes you may jump up to the max of 1550...try to be sure you eat the right calories, not empty calories. that helped me a lot. i am choosing great foods now, instead of foods that dont do anything for my body....
the more cardio and strength you do, the more calories your body needs.
i am not an expert at all....but what i do know is that i have been on 1200-1550 since jan, working out every day one way or another and have lost weight, gained muscle and feel wonderful! also, i kinda hit a plateau, at about 127, 128...and 2 weeks ago, i just got hungry and have been going a bit over everyday on calories during the week and way over on weekends and have gotten down to 125...the science of all this is crazy! at this time i am doing my daily dvd workouts (turbo jam and biggest loser series) in the am before work and also something at night like walking, cutting wood, yard work, the fun stuff.....so i am double dipping on cardio.
well good luck to you!!!

Hi Everyone!
I am new to this group- just found it and I'm soo happy I did. I am 5'2" and 118 lbs. Up until a year ago I was always around 110. Then I graduated college and the pounds started to pack on.. Anyway, I can see majority of you eat within 1200-1500 cal range.. I eat around 1100/day...if I bump that up how would it effect weight lose? I want to lose at least a pound a week. Any suggestions? Also, I do 5-6 days of cardio a week but no weight training...is that healthy? Oh, and, I am bottom heavy which is where all my weight goeas --but dont have measurements just yet- I will be doing that on Saturday.
I'm so unfamiliar with all of this. Any help would be GREAT! :)

I think how the calorie deficit works is:

BMR + amount of calories exerted in a day =
For example mine is:
1034 + 600 (I burn everyday) = 1634
Now, you can stay on the low end of 1,034 cal to 1,634 calories.

For example if you eat about 1300 calories today, your calorie deficit calculation is:

1634 calories - 1300 = 334 calorie deficit

((Don't eat too much on the days you didn't work out))

Sparkpeople is actually accurate with the calculation. If you increase your exercise, of course in return, you have to increase your calories (not so much) by approximately 100-200 calories only.

Let me know if any of you are still confused.

I am still really lost with the calorie deficit thing too! I am burning a lot of calories but I am not really feeling hungry, so i would not want to increase my calories too much. I am keeping it right around 1400 give or take a bit. Seems to be working so, I am going to stay where I am and re evaluate if i come to a plateau!

I don't personally know the answer to those questions, but I do know I have a friend who recently reached goal and she ate 1800 cals/day, but she is an avid exerciser. I'm not a calorie counter, other than trying not to go TOO high - keep it under 1600, so I don't factor my exercise cals burned in, but others may....

Hit goal 11/1/07 and maintaining!!

Do you guys count calorie burn into your intake? I usually dont but after reading that when you eat a little more you lose more, i think maybe i should be eating more when i exercise alot. (?) What about weight training?

My original calorie range was 1200-1500 but I changed my weekly calorie burn goal and my calorie range went up quite a bit. Has anyone else changed their plan to reflect what they burn or are you just burning in addition to having low calories? My original plan only had me burning 360 calories a week and I'm definetely going way over that so I think it makes sense to eat more but now comparing myself to you guys I'm not so sure. (Btw, I'm also only 18 so that might change my range, i dunno)

Here's my experience. I just began maintaining the first of Feb. At that time, I was eating between 1100-1300 calories. I actually focus on carbs, but also watch calories. Going into maintaining, I raised carbs and calories...calories to about 1300-1600/day. During my first 9 days of the raised numbers, I lost 3 pounds...more than I had lost in quite some time. Just sharing what worked for me....

Hit goal 11/1/07 and maintaining!!

Think of it this way. For 3500 calories you take out of your body. food or exercise, you lose 1 lb of fat (remember - fat) if you are gaining muscle, you will not see the scale go down. If you eat less than the 1200 cal a day your body will say "hey I am starving I better shut down and start to store fat". Well I would say that kicks in when you are eating 500-800 a day. You have to eat close to the 1200 a day. You burn calories doing everything, breathing, sleeping etc. To lose that 1 lb you just have to burn a little more and eat less. Most members who are not dieting go way over 1500 a day. 1200 is not too hard to keep to. I usually get to 1100 a day. I eat a small things. Egg whites morning, 1 toast whole wheat. Apple or banana snack, then a small lunch. I usually leave 600 cal for dinner and keep breakfast and lunch to 600 cal. I do treat myself once in a while. I have not lost much. That is the exercise I am NOT doing. LOL.

I too want to be size 6 at 115lbs, size 4 at 110 would be amazing!!!

Hey everybody! emoticon

My name is Lisa and I am 4'9" and currently weight 114. My goal is 100, but I am going to re-evaluate when I reach that. 3 years ago I was 97 and I looked good.

I eat 1200-1550 calories a day, usually I eat no more than 1300 though.

I do an hour on the stair-climber 4 or 5 days a week and I just got back started on lifting and I try to do that 3 days a week.

emoticon all of you!

Lisa

I would love to be 110 pounds because I know that would diffenently be a good weight for me, and I would be the size that I want to be. I mean I want to be a size 6 because I think that would be healthy for me.

I'm 5'0". I don't think I'm "thin" looking at 113#. I think I look healthy. 110 is an arbitrary number - 3 pounds isn't going to make much difference and I'm not going to TRY to hit it, as I'm beginning maintaining mode, but at the rate I'm going, I just might see it.

Hit goal 11/1/07 and maintaining!!

It's so cool that you hit your goal. And inspiring!I'm curious as to how tall (or short) you are. I'm 4'11" and I'm working to get down to somewhere between 110 and 105. I haven't seen my body at that size in so long it almost seems and impossibility, but I'm excited and motivated.

I've always tried to hit 1200 calories. Some days it's easier than others. My goal was 118#. I lost a couple beyond that, then I began upping my numbers (carbs/cals) on February 1st, and have lost 3 more pounds since then...I never imagined being 110, but now that I've hit 113 this AM, I'm wondering if that may be a possibility for me...

Hit goal 11/1/07 and maintaining!!

WICKED! Thank girls!

Most days i don't even break the 1200 cal mark! I've been drinking so much water that I'm not hungry. And I am a slow eater also, so I never finish what's on my plate anyways. Honestly I've just been lazy. I've gained the weight because I never excersised before! So now that I AM it shouldn't take too too long to reach my goal! WHOOP!

I have placed my order with the universe today, and I am hungry for SUCCESS!

TERESABERG,

Yeah! Depending on your metabolism you burn around 1200 calories a day just for your heart to pump, your lungs to breathe, brain function and body temperature, keep muscle and body tissue alive, etc. So if you eat less and exercise, then those calories you get them from fat and muscle in your body. If you exercise, then you lose more fat than muscle.

Well 'i was told that you need 1200 calories just for body function every day that isn't for anything els .
So if you exercise and you burn 300 calories and subtract 200 calories what do you have left
.
That's why they say 1200 -1550 calories daily.

To be strong and focused in all i do .
and never say never.
Also i can do anything through Christ our Lord and Savior Amen Thank you
JESUS!!
I also tell myself i will control the weight the weight doesn't control me!!

Hi! I just joined your group this morning, and then found this forum. I have a few questions. Maybe someone can clarify? ALL my weight is around my midsection! I had 2 c-sections and the muscles there are hard to use, still! My recommended caloric intake is the same as yours 1200-1550, but doesn't that seem high? I mean I have an office job, I can't see myself burning many cals during the day, and I only burn about 100-150 cals at the gym doing cardio. So.....as far as I know you are supposed to burn more than you eat! If this is true then shouldn't I only be eating around 500 cals /day? I'm not sure how to calculate! PLEASE HELP!

ps, I am 4'11-3/4" tall.

I have placed my order with the universe today, and I am hungry for SUCCESS!

I lost 6.2 lbs these past 4 weeks by eating on average 1100 cal a day. Sometimes I eat 900 calories to make up for slip ups, but I think that is the only way I will lose at a faster rate. Like 1.8 lbs per week. Then when I'm closer to 100 lbs, I think I will lose 1 lb per week eating the same calories. If you eat mostly fruits and vegetables and no fat, you can eat a lot of food in 1000 calories.

Oh, yessssss I want to get to 110 lbs. My goal is 120 now, but in the last week I gained back 1 1/2 lbs back. GRRRRRRR. I guess no excercise will do that. Not to mention spagetti & meatballs and garlic bread. I was so hungry last night. Guess that time of the month is fast approaching again. I was hoping to be 139 (4lbs less)at the end of Feb, now I have to lose 5.5lbs to get there. 29 days in Feb. At least I have one extra day.

If you ever have the chance to get metabolic testing done, I highly recommend it. I had it done at the gym. (It was available for non-members too). I now know exactly how many calories my body burns, how many to maintain, and how many I need to lose weight. It was the best thing I could have done! No guessing now.

One thing the hospital nurse did mention (stressed a lot) was anyone under 123# greatly increases their chances of osteoporosis. She said with a smaller body it is imperative to do strength training and to maintain the strength training. It is the best way to prevent osteoporosis for smaller (123# and under) including the eating calcium foods. I wanted everyone to be aware of this because I didn't know it before.

If you don't love yourself....how can you expect others to.

Well, you've done something right, SHORTYK21. Look at how much you've lost already! Keep up the good work, you are an inspiration to me. I know that if I watch what I intake, it will make a difference. Maybe not right away, but it will in the long haul. I'm in for the long haul.

It's not what you have, it's what you do with it that counts.

I try to eat around 1200 calories a day but I find it difficult to stick around there, most days I end up in the upper 1800 range. I am not losing any weight because of this. I need to get my calories in check and do it once and for all, then when I am at my goal weight I can eat 1700 calories to maintain my weight. I am frusterated, but at the same time I know that I do it to myself and I consciously make the decisions to eat what I do. I just hate that I have to eat different/fewer foods then everyone else I am around (boyfriend, mostly), I want yummy snacks too!!!
