I had joined the team for emotional eaters when I 1st joined sp in 1-08 and then one day it was as if GOD just spoke to me and said why are you claiming being an emotional eater,don't claim it and you can over come needless to say I have still been struggling with it, I no longer eat out of boredom but I still find myself reaching for sweets when I'm stressed which I have been alot lately but I have been trying to redirect all that negativity into something positive whether it's washing a load of clothes,picking up behind my 2 year old or just talking out loud to GOD and praying. WE ARE OVER COMERS!!!!! WE CAN WIN THIS FIGHT!!!! BELIEVE IT AND YOU SHALL ACHIEVE IT!!!! emoticon

Hi Bobbie,
How are you? I too have been a emotional eater in the past. And I too can say I would eat because I was bored, and possibly even lonely. But I had to be honest with myself and realize that it was much deeper than just emotional eating. We all experience many disappointments and heartbreaks in life that cause us to retreat to ourselves and to our food for comfort, but we must stop the madness. When we eat because we are bored, it will not help our cause/or fight. We are in this fight to lose the weight, get healthy, feel positive about ourselves and know that with determination all things are possible. You may want to try preparing a nice protein shake, add some ground flax seed which will help you to feel full. I buy inspirational books to read, which help keep me motivated. I also have a good friend that I call and we talk for hours, which helps to get your mind off food and on something else. Maintaining and controlling our weight, mind and emotions is a daily process. But we must get up each day more determined than the day before to excel and do better today than we did yesterday. No, it's not easy, but it's not impossible either. Remember we must be DEDICATED AND DETERMINED TO SUCCEED. :O) Bobbie, hopefully this information I shared was helpful.

I am a big time emotional eater. Boredom is a big trigger for me, I find myself walking to the fridge only to stop myself and asking are you really hungry or do you just want to eat? I usually try drinking a bottle of water or walking on my treadmill for 10 minutes if I am still hungry I allow myself a piece of fruit.

I try not to keep junk food in my house just because of my emotional eating. If it is there I will consume it. Ice cream is a big one for me, I will think nothing of eating a half-gallon in one day if it is in the house. It is like I have no self control when it comes to ice cream.

But like I said my biggest trigger for emotional eating is boredom and I know that so I am trying very hard to control it.

I am not really an emotional eater, but when I feel the urge to eat. I like salty snacks. Other than that, I keep quite a bit of fruit on hand. I am not too much of a raw veggie person.

My problem is sugar this week. I just want anything that has sugar and made of flour. It is terrible!!! Im like a made woman out of control!! Ok,ok I know it will pass. I will sure be glad when it does. I have 10 pounds to loss before Christmas and I aint gonna do it this way!!

I notice that I can't wait to get all comfy and plop myself in front of the tv and start eating one thing after another and it doesn't have to be sweets, it can be leftovers. If it gives my tastebuds pleasure, I'm eating it....veggies are never part of this spread.

I don't eat like this outside of my home (I must be a closet emotional eater) but when I get home I'll eat like I haven't eaten all day. Sometimes I'll have a stressful day and I know I'm eating to comfort myself but for the most part I find it simply enjoyable and relaxing to just watch tv and eat foods that taste really good. I'm also aware that it's not "right" or "normal" when I'm doing this.

Is this binge eating, emotional eating, habit eating or a combination of all and what's the difference? I have tried to sub healthy things like grapes, popcorn, reduced fat chips and kashi bars but I don't get the same satisfaction or enjoyment that I'm looking for and I'll find myself eating even more.

Does anyone have any ideas where I'm coming from? If I could just understand this part of my destructive eating, it would really help me in making progress. Thanks!

I covered this at the beginning of the week but I'll repeat the information again today! Banging your head on the door counts as cardio! You do use up a small amout of calories...
For comfort food replacement, I cut up carrots for carrot sticks, celery for celery sticks, I have green and red grapes on standby and If I really feel naughty, I'll have paris toasts or melba toast with antipasto... but only a few of them... Ray

Thank you for creating this thread Spiritangel! You are such a dear friend ♥!!!

So, I'm here because of my emotional connection with food...It's bad, a bad habit to have and I need to somehow disconnect that connection...I am so very thankful to have this site to turn to and you wonderful people as well! I often turn to food for comfort as I'm sure many of you understand and it's truly nerve wracking!!! Makes me want to scream, although I won't...lol! But, really I need help...I have been doing so much better over the past months here on SP...Slipping up a bit then covering up my mistakes by changing inch by inch and locating each problem that I have and at least attempting to target them and destroy them...Not always lucky when it comes to destroying them but I sure do try...I would definately like to hear what anyone has to say I love to hear about how other's deal with their emotional eating habits...So, please share...

I've become accustomed to making a cup of tea whenever I am craving something really bad!...Or, I'll have an apple of course which is fabulous (fiber makes you full!)...I do love fruit's and vegitables so I eat plenty of that whenever I can...

Those are my tips, not much but it's what I do!

The point is... you caught it on time! I know I used to eat potatoes and gravy mix when I needed comfort food. Read the labels... If you need chips go for the lowest carb count you can find. If you need dip... make your own... Onion soup mix and diet sour creme etc... Low cal creme cheese etc... A little research and reading the nutrition labels will save you lots of weight without losing the comfort food... If you eat the comfort food, just have smaller portions and chew slower and longer. Drink a glass of water before eating the comfort food and unsugared tea or coffee, unsweetened juice etc during the "Binge" LOWER CARBS IS THE TICKET..
Good luck to you... Prepare the comfort food the healthiest way and you'll feel much better about the "comfort" food that you eat... enjoy... Ray

I think you're right, justeyes. I used to weigh a lot less...size six....and couldn't get used to the new weight and couldn't figure out where it came from all of a sudden. Most likely, it was my carefree eating that finally caught up to me. But it caught up to me fast!

Fran... Hun you just have to keep telling yourself your much healthier now that the 19 pounds is gone. If you have to have he comfort foods then try getting some that have lower calories to nibble on when ya need too. I have a feeling even though you said you it was the dr. that told you you had too that you really want to make this happen for yourself also..

Hmm....Ray. I don't think that would do it for my emotional eating! I have to have comfort food...the kind I used to eat before SP. At least I manage to stay within my calorie range now.

Hope that I don't blow it before Tuesday and regain the 19 lbs. that I lost. That's when I see the dr. who wanted me to lose weight in the first place.

I started thinking about that from the articles that I read saying that a person makes better progress if it's their decision. I know it's part of a drs. job to bring that up, but...

For the record... it's all right to eat emotionally as long as you watch what you emotionally eat and the quantity of emotional food you eat...

Switch from comfort food and junk food to things like carrot sticks, grapes,orange segments etc...

I am here to help also. I was an emotional eater up until last year. Then I took control of myself and my eating. It is a long road and your going to have to take it one day at a time. Your going to have to teach yourself that when you feel this way you need to find some other sort of outlet instead of reaching for the food.

I started with walking away and going into the yard and doing some yard work. Then I moved it up and even if I had already went to the gym that day I did more exercise.. It helped relieve that feeling. I also found many other ways like taking a walk and adding a small run in it, listening to soothing music. Get creative with it and it becomes more of a habit then a have to do.

I tell ya if I can get past the emotional eating and everything else I have had to learn to do in better ways then anyone can do it. It's all will power and You ALL have that within you. Or else you would not be here with all of us wanting to make such big life changes...

You can do this and we are going to do it together ok. What we are going to do is check in each day and make ourselves responsible for what we have eaten for the day. We will be honest with ourselves and track everything in our food journals. This will keep us honest.
No luck here just plain old will power and the motivation between us we will do this. Are you in?

I have to eat the same way or I break my momentum... I have to lose my weight and nothing is going to stop me... emotions or not! However... for the records I did step away from my regular diet and still came in under the caloric goal! It's back to the diet tomorrow... LOL.... Ray
