My students suffer from amnesia. They tell me I never gave them homework. Of source, a student told me she didn't have time to write one paragraph because of soccer practice.

I had the mother of a high school student write a note excusing tardiness and lack of work because "He was having a bad hair day."

I was indeed impressed!

OK....here`s a new one, first time I`ve heard it anyway.....

'I forgot it, I forgot everything this morning....I don`t even have a pencil'

OK ...not the first time I heard , but the first time I heard it all confessed at once, when I all asked about was 1 piece of work

I get this response all the time. Other classes are more important than mine too, and mine is the mathematics class (along with English) the students need to pass to be promoted to the next grade. I guess I am too "nice" and allow students to turn HW in late (with a penalty of course)

"I had to work on an assignment for another class and ran out of time...."

Apparently all classes are more important that mine, because I have caught them working on other assignments in my classroom!.....of course my class is just Math, English, Science, History.....I`m sure those subjects are much more important.

"I lost the file"---mind you, they have been encouraged from day one to back up typed projects/assignments.

I gave a group project and each group had to decide what each individual was bringing in the next class so that they could work on it. I checked with every group to see that everyone had made an assignment list. The next class a student's excuse was that they didn't feel like writing down their assignment so their group member was supposed to text them it and they never texted it. The assignment was literally two words: balsamic vinegar, but the student claimed it was the other group members fault and they didn't remember it. I laughed and walked away.

I watched a student complete the homework 2nd period in my study hall. He returned to math class 5th period with out. His response: "It caught on fire in science class. I can get you some of the pieces from garbage can in science but they're a little wet." Checked with science and it was true...

It's at Dads/Grandmas/etc...

It's done but our printer is out of ink (I hear this weekly...)

We all share the computer at home and I didn't get enough time.

I didn't know.--Now, I pass out typed MONTHLY in advance calendars, it's on the whiteboard daily, we talk about it AND it's posted online. I hate this excuse!

I don't listen to their excuses. All that's relevant to me is whether they have the work or not. Most students who have legitimate excuses will come see me outside of class, so we can work out a plan.

I'm curious about something--I hear a lot of times in teacher's lounges about some of the excuses students will come up with for not turning in their work.

What is the best excuse you've heard (funny or otherwise)? What's the worst?
