I am trying to qualify again in April at the IL marathon! I am working with a coach this time and have improved pretty significantly in just 5 weeks of working with him. Yesterday I ran a 10K in 48:50 and below are my other times since working with him:

11-10-12 Beat Beethoven 5K 24:20( 7:36 pace) 3rd female overall
11-17-12 North Face Endurance Challenge Half Marathon Kansas City, MO 1:51 29 seconds away from an age group award! 4th in my age group out of 42, 64th female out of 493, 183 out of 841 overall. This was the hilliest toughest course I have ever been on! I think I could have gone sub 1:50 on a flatter course.

When I first stared working with him I gave him all my historical times even pre-masters and he thinks I have the potential to run sub 3:50. We shall see. Let's keep in touch! Karen

New goal in this Boston training is to do a run at race pace each Friday.
Tomorrow is my first Friday. I'll do a 3 mile run at 6.857 mph which I think is 8min11sec pace.
Each Friday I'll add 1/2 mile to the total until I get to 26.2.
Since I have already finished 5 marathons the distance isn't an issue it is just the speed I have to work at.
Today I am eating really well, hydrating and resting!

Thanks for your reply :-) There is nobody on our little island who is interested in running the way I am and I really wish I had a group of women to share running thoughts and dreams with :-)
So cool you got to actually run in Boston before! An experience to remember I'm sure.
I really hope I get to pick up my race packet or take a cup of water from you on the course some day!!!

Such a BIG bummer about the Chicago :-( Thanks for sharing your story !
So cool to find another 46 year old woman into running :-)
I really get what you are saying about being hesitant to set Boston as a goal again, especially since they seem to always be making it harder and harder and even if we run a qualifying time they might sell out before we get a chance to qualify.
I have set the goal over and over and not meet it, but I have decided as long as I am alive I'll just keep trying. At least the qualifying time gets slower as we get older, lol.
I am going to try for a 25 minute 5K in the next two weeks. That would put me on track for a 3:35 marathon which I am aiming for in order to qualify for Boston and be able to register on the first day.
Keep you chin up and your running shoes handy. We are getting better and better with age!!

What a wonderful goal. I wish you the very best. I have run Boston with an invitational number (as a member of a local running group-our group has helped in BAA events over the years) but I am no where near qualifying speed. My husband and I usually volunteer in some capacity on race day or the day before. Maybe we'll be lucky enough to meet you when you are in Beantown.

I hope you find a spark team member to work with you. I would love to follow your progress and keep in touch.

Dear DLZAPALAC:
I have had this dream since 7th grade (I am 46)! However, right now I am just hoping to run under 4 hours in a fall marathon. I was ready to do that in Chicago 2010 which would have qualified me. I trained sooo hard and all my times indicated I could run 4:00 or under and I ended up with blisters on my feet so bad from the heat that I could barely walk by mile 10. This was before the change in Boston standards so I would have had a good chance to get in. I was in the best shape of my life I think. I was devastated for months and have not run a marathon since. I am going to run Little Rock in March just to see what I can do. Hoping for about 4:15. I ran Kansas City 2 years ago in 4:25 without training very hard or smart. I also need to drop weight so I would have that same goal. Anyway, I am afraid to set the goal again because I got so focused on just that one thing that I did not even feel good that I finished Chicago but in my heart I still have this dream. Karen emoticon

I have a goal of running a qualifying marathon in 2012 so that I can run the Boston Marathon in 2013.
If anyone out there wants to join me and help encourage each other to meet this BIG goal Please join in!!!
I have to run the qualifier in 3:50 or faster.
But, since you can't register on the first day registration is open unless you finish 15 minutes faster than your qualifying time, I am really aiming for 3:35. They have sold out on the first day of registration a couple years in a row now, I think, so I believe I have to meet that lower time if I want a chance to actually run in Boston.
Hope to find some qualifying buddies soon :-)
