Even though it will be a while before I even think about racing...I did, however, walk my first 5K ever a few weekends ago (Sept 14th - Fitness 4 Literacy 5K Run/ Walk). It took me 1:17:19 to finish, but I finished *and* it gives me a starting time to improve on :)

My second 5k walk is going to be the American Diabetes Association's Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes on October 12th.

My first 5k is in October for the Pretty Muddy Women's Run. There's another one the week after in Marietta called Superheroes and Villains 5k run that my boys are going to walk/jog with me. If anyone wants to join my partner and I for the Pretty Muddy Women's Run let me know. We entered the run under the team name "Phat Chicks". emoticon

I'll check out that 5K. Thanks! I use active.com as well. It's a good site to use to find local run/walk events.

Hi!

I know of two upcoming run/walks for good causes in the Atlanta area, and I'll be participating in both. The first is a 3-mile family fun run/walk to benefit Nicholas House shelter on Saturday, May 11 (http://www.mothersdayfunrun.com). The second is a family run/walk to benefit Bethany's Adoption and Foster Care Programs on Saturday, May 18 (http://www.bethany.org/atlanta/walkrun-ch
ildren).

Send me an email if you'd like to plan to meet up before or after either of these events. I'm looking forward to meeting some Atlanta Sparkers!

This is awesome and emoticon . I'd join you but most of the ones that look of interest are runs and I don't do them because of shin splints. Keep us posted on your success though!

Consider the 2013 Atlanta Women's 5k! I signed up for it as my first race, which will be my first in almost 15 years (I did the Peachtree in '99). It sounds fun and welcoming.

Hi DUSTEDTWIN - I was glad to see your list of walks/runs for this year. I have been researching walks because I'm interested in trying my first walk. No running yet for me! I would love to be able to run one day! Anyway, I was thinking of doing the Color Run and Komen. It would be nice to attend some of these with fellow sparkers. I'll review your list and see if I can get the fees together to join.

I probably can signup as a walker to support your team for the Komen. I maybe too slow to walk with the team though! Just starting to walk 5k and all.

Thanks again! emoticon

Awesome, Juliana! Sounds like you're ready to go with it!!!

I usually run/walk because I'm still not quite up to the full running yet :)
If you send me the info on the one you're doing, I might do it too (assuming that's OK with you). Lake Lanier isn't too far from me in Suwanee/Johns Creek, and I've done a couple up that way. They are usually a little hilly, but still good races.

DH signed us up for a 5K at Lake Lanier for March 16 so I'm starting some training. Not a runner but can definitely FAST WALK it.
Went to New Balance and found a good pair of shoes with their inserts. My heel has been bothering me so I hope this helps.
We want to get into more races so I'm looking positive for the March one!

That would be awesome, MissyGeen!!!

This will be my 3rd year participating in the Komen Race for the Cure. It's probably my favorite race that's on my list.

Until April, fees for this race are $30. After April 21st at 5pm, they are increased to $35. Many people do walk this one, or some form of run/walk. There are about 20,000 participants, so you can probably imagine that it's very difficult to run the entire race. The vendors that are set up after the race are usually pretty awesome and include Wells Fargo, Bank of America, New Balance, Ford, Perdue, P&G, and one of the grocery chains. I don't remember there being many items for sale, but lots of coupons being given away and some things like Komen memorabilia (bracelets, pens, etc) and Ford always has their Warrior in Pink scarves out there (which are awesome).

Komen wants participants to fundraise for this race, but there is NO REQUIREMENT to do so.

It really is a great race, and a giant party afterwards. I hope you are able to join!!!

Hi Dustedtwin. I haven't been able to enter into any runs yet because of fees to get in. Not complaining, the runs/walks benefit many great causes that I would like to contribute. I would definitely like to join you on some, particularly the Komen walk. Maybe by then I can actually register. Just let us know where to meet you when the time comes. Maybe I will write Spark on a t-shirt like those cheesy guys in the movies. Just joking.

Now I have an excuse to join the couch to 5K team.

I'm not a member of ATC, so it may be linked to certain races. I know their "Grand Prix" has 13 races in it. You can e-mail their member services to find out. I completely agree that more than a 2 hour drive is not worth a 5k race!

I didn't know there was an AWARD!!! Oddly enough I've got 13 races penciled in on my calendar, so I hope that qualifies me. I'm skipping the Peachtree City 5k this weekend because it's just too far to go (I'm out past Lawrenceville), but I'm going to try and make the rest of them.

Thanks, Laura! I might add in a couple ATC events, as I will need some more towards the summer/fall to fill out the full 25. I did ATC's Father's Day 4 Miler a couple years ago - that was a great race! Are you going to try for an Energizer Bunny Award? I think that's running 13 races in 12 months with ATC.

Also, I would like to invite everyone to walk with my Komen 3-Day team (you don't have to be a registered participant and you don't have to walk as many miles as we do). We typically meet every Saturday (and some Sundays too) at the New Balance in Alpharetta. The current meet time is 8am, but as the sun comes up earlier, the time will be pushed earlier. We have anywhere from 3-15 walkers, depending on the weekend. Average pace is 18-19 minutes/mile, but there are definitely a few of us that are slower. Please come out and join this wonderful group of men and women!
