And so, I am starting HM training. Hoping to participate in one in the spring. Also trying out Jeff Galloway's walk break schedule. I forgot to wear my HRM today, so do not know about that...but

10-4 [all running] 14'12"..14'40"..14'43"
10-16 [walk breaks]13'16"..13'48"..13'45"

Not sure what this means, but I will keep experimenting to see what happens.

FICTIONRUNNER: I have heard that also - about taking a week off once a year. Just letting the body repair and rebuilding the desire to run maybe.

I've heard that runners should take a full week off about once a year. THough I haven't heard the official rationalization on why, I've heard runners say the rest is hard to accept, but beneficial.

I'm nearing a week of no running due to this chest cold, and I must say I hate not moving. At the same time, I can call it multi-tasking. Instead of taking an official rest week, and then getting sick for a week, I'm doing both at once. I'm guessing that doesn't really count, but hey, it sounds good.

Does anyone have any info on why the yearly rest week is recommended? THat is, besides simply taking an extra healing week when pushing hard in training?

Hi team! Sunday I broke my ankle hiking up at Lake Tahoe. So I have been out of comission for about 5 days so far. I called the trainer at my gym and she suggested that I use the "seated bike" for my cardio. So I went to the gym this morning, and did 10.125 miles in 60 mins on that bike. It did raise my heart rate so I was pleased that I could do something! (especially after a week of feeling like I just ruined my weight loss program) I did sneak up on the eliptical to see how it would effect my ankle, and I only did 5 minutes but I think I could do it without any problem. So after 6 days of feeling that I can't do any cardio, I was soo happy this morning to prove myself wrong! So I am pleased that I will be able to participate in our 1k/5k for this weekends race! Yay!

FR - awesome time. I've noticed several runners use Vibrams.

Yesterday hiked almost 11 miles. 1/2 of it UP. Lots more work than a straight-away.

Good job Seabreeze. A trail right outside your door? I'd never be home! LoL

Broke down and bought a pair of Vibram Five-Fingers after I caught myself considering giving up barefoot for the winter. Bah! Went out in them this morning and had a Personal Best mile - 9.47! What a difference not worrying about road burn on my toes.

After taking almost a full week off due to the UTI, I headed back to the gym last night. (The heat wave was too much to risk an outdoor run.)

It wasn't the best run, but I beat off some iffy feelings in the first quarter mile. Total run: one mile at 11 min, walk 1/4 mile, one more mile at 11 min. Not bad, and I'm happy to ease back into things so that I can have a decent virtual race this weekend.

6 week training plan...now until return from National Park vacations...

Depends a lot on how difficult it is to run at 6000+ feet, but....

Run 3x per week...
1x - 30+ minute - working on sprints
1x - 30+ minute tempo run
1x - 30+++ long endurance run

If it is too difficult to run for 30 mintues will simply adjust and stay motivated - doing SOMETHING!

Yesterday, I turned up the treadmill. It was weird. It was more difficult to keep a quicker pace on the treadmill than on the roads. Maybe because on the road I fluctuate for an average of that steady number I set on the treadmill?

While up at the lake I hit a mile barefoot. It was a packed dirt road, so I do't know that I'm quite ready to sustain that on asphalt, but I'm close.

Sea, My knee is sore because I whacked the heck out of it on the corner of my desk the other day. Then that same night I stepped off the driveway and twisted it.

It's just a twinge on the inside of my right knee cap. Running doesn't seem to be any worse for it than walking. At times it doesn't hurt at all and sometimes it's pretty sore. My mind was just trying to convince me not to crawl out of bed LOL

Thanks!

I'm glad to hear you aren't having the problems that you've had in the past.

Hey REDDOG,

I reached this point a couple years ago and, as I've said before, I was SO EXCITED that I was a runner that I pushed myself too much and my knees were sore ALL THE TIME. Between knees and this right IT band I kept doing less and less hoping everything would get better.

Well, I had to stop completely (or almost) and started again this year. My knees do not hurt AT ALL. This IT band is manageable so far and not a problem.

As I move ahead, it will be with caution as...

I WANT to keep running!!!!!
But I have learned not to be in too big of a hurry!

I do not run barefoot, but I do sometimes think about how my foot is striking the ground when I run. I try NOT to be a 'hard' heal stricker.

Yesterday I was practicing the barefoot / forefoot stride on the treadmill (with sneakers on) and my shins started to ache. This is, they say, to be expected, so I took it easy and switched to rowing for some cross-training.

This forefoot strike feels so weird, but I was able to sustain a slightly faster pace, so I can see the potential.

FR: You are really improving!!!

Today, for me,...
....Completed a 25 minute run - W7D1!!!

Been reading some articles about training and eating and training. Very interesting.

A Matt Fitzgerald article: 3 different types of runs each week...
1) ONE LONG ENDRUANCE RUN
2) MAXIMUM INTENSITY RUNS (SPRINTS)
3) LACTATE THRESHOLD or TEMPO RUNS

Link: www.active.com/running/Articles/Can_
Ru
nning_Technique_Be_Taught_.htm?cmp=1R>8-50&utm_source=sendible&utm_medium=feed

Right now I feel like all I do are endurance runs as...that is about all I can endure.

As I get stronger I should include other types of runs.

I think this running thing is addictive...

I changed my mind this morning and ran and walked. Although it was slow....I ran for 27 minutes without stopping.

I actually felt like I could have kept going...the heart rate monitor wasn't beeping so much, I felt good. But I don't want to do something stupid (again).

So...Week 6 Day 3 out of the way!!!! Onto week 7!!

Both, Red. Definitely both.

Sea, nothing wrong with walking. If your body needs the running break, then take it. You don't want to overdo it and hurt something. Listen to your body (but not that little voice in the back of the mind that would always prefer not to exercise at all.)

Good for that high school!

If only we had such requirements as adults. Haha.

Definitely be proud. We're proud of you too.

I mentioned to my kid about the virtual race this past weekend and that I'd done my mile at slightly over 11 minutes.

With all the tact of a just turned 20 year old who has been a competitive swimmer since she was 4, she snickered softly under her breath and said "You do realize that you have to run a mile in under either 9 or 8 minutes to graduate from high school in SC right?"

Talk about deflating old Mom! Then she gave me a big smile and told me she was proud of me lol.

I was proud of me too, I didn't smack her!

Now that I've refocused, I'm up to a solid half-mile barefoot. I love the feel of the warm pavement under my feet, but I can tell when the blisters are about to start up, so I'm not ready to go beyond that half-mile just yet.

The heat and humidity have kept me from doing 5k regularly, but I'm pushing at least two miles each run, even if I have to take a short walk break between them.

Thanks, SeaBreeze. I love that quote myself. My daughter bought me a necklace a couple of years ago with that quote engraved on it. I never take it off.

Yesterday she got me one that has a pendant in the shape of a compass. Engraved on it is "There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going."

Yes, your hubby is right about the speed. I'm just starting to see the increase in speed myself. I went from wondering if I'd ever have the stamina to get faster to having to focus on keeping a steady, slower pace so I don't run myself out in the first mile. It'll come if you're patient and faithful to your training program.

Think back 5 weeks ago. Could you have ONLY run 1.37 miles? ONLY run 20 minutes?

Today I....
Completed W5D3 of the C25K program...
Ran 20 minutes....

Only at a 14.59 minute mile though and only traveled 1.37 miles in that 20 minutes. ONLY (that is not a very positive word in this sentence).

Very humid today. Heart rate monitor was active, but not too bad. My husband, who used to be a long distance runner, keeps telling me not to worry about my speed...that will come as I become a stronger runner.

When I was young I had no sense and pushed to the extreme. Consequently I dislocated both hips, one in high school and one in college. As I've gotten older I've learned that pain and overwork are not badges. (My high school coaches were wrong! lol)

I'd prefer to advance slowly and still be able keep going. Thanks for your advice and reminders!

That sounds like a good plan. I pushed too hard off the start of my running program and ended up with some shin pain. I'm finally past that now, but for a while it'd creep up whenever I tried to go farther or faster. I'm sure I don't need to say that's not worth it.

That's a good idea, doing Monday's on Sunday as a race. I think since I'm so early in the program I'll try just doing the one on Saturday. If all goes well I'll work on incorporating your idea for the next set of races!

Thanks for everyone's input.

Beginning runners are suppose to have rest days and so the MWF running schedule also works for me.

I include the race into that days C25K schedule. With the Garmin that I use, I can calculate 1 mile or the 5K, plus run the designated time amounts etc.

But on race weekends if I can I will try to do Monday's C25K run on Sunday.

Then I can do 2 of the scheduled races.

That's just me.

Just be careful and use good sense.

My workouts are Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings before I go to work. If I try to do evening or weekend workouts something ALWAYS interferes.

Maybe I'll try doing my regular workout Friday morning then the 1 mile on Saturday evening. That give me a fairly decent recovery time on both sides.

So for this first weekend, only the 1 mile lol

2.5 miles, road/trails (1 running, 1/2 walking, 1 running)

I don't do the C25k but our races tend to fall on my regular running days since I know work won't interfere in a weekend jog schedule.

If it's your regular day, go for it. If it's not, listen to your body before choosing whether or not you should do an extra day because rest days can be as important as running days, especially when increasing your challenge.

I did C25K W1D2 this morning. I did, counting the 5 minute warm up and 5 minute cool down, 1.86 miles in 30 minutes which Spark People says is in the 16 min/mile range.

My question is, do those of you who are doing C25K do your regular 3 days a week, then the virtual races as an "extra" day?

I think that would be the direction I take, but I'd like to know what others are doing.

I used the Target Heart Rate calculator and it says:

85% is 146

I have my Garmin set to beep at 150, which is obviously greater than this 146.

But, at this level my RPE is between 6-7 which is where it should be. I "feel" like I could keep running at that speed, but just don't want to take a stupid chance with this life.

I played around with the calculator a little and if I were 50 instead of 60 my THR would be 154 at 85%.

I will keep it programmed at 150 for now and just run slow enough so that, well, I don't keel over on the road.

Also, I did have a stress test this past week and they had my heart rate at about 165-170 for awhile. the doc seemed okay with it.

Have you tried the heart rate calculation from SparkPeople? It takes into account your resting heart rate as well as your age. I know my heart rate based on Perceived Exertion is higher than average for my age so when I tried that calculation, I got a more reasonable number.

I'm on the Road Runners team but I haven't dropped in lately. I'll have to fix that error! There's a new guy at the gym with Five Fingers. I want to ask him how he likes them, but I'm too much of an introvert to interrupt a workout.

Today was a light two mile jog. I managed to keep myself closer to a proper pace than usual, so I'm happy about that.

Hey FR, I am also a member of another team (Road Runners). They are, what I consider real runners, as opposed to me, a wanna be. Anyway, several of them run in the 5 Fingers...and some run barefoot. I had not realized how many runners were moving in this direction.

Yesterday....
Finished Week 4 Day 3 of the Couch to 5K program.
Ran a total of 1.1 miles
Walked a total of 3.14 miles

Next week day 1 is:
Run 5 min; Walk 3 min (3 times)
I think I can do this one....

It is the next 2 days of week 5 that I wonder about:
Day 2....Run 8 min; walk 5 (2 times)
Day 3....Run 20 min....

Hmmmmm...I'll have to see how my heart rate is, I already have the monitor programmed for a higher heartrate than is recommended.
