Had my weekly session with my trainer.
I was running late and didn't have time for the treadmill before our session.
That is something I will never miss again.
What a difference a warm up on the treadmill makes.
Lesson learned.

Jenae,

I'm glad you caught it in time and it was taken care of. Our bodies have a way of telling us what we can and can't do, don't they?

Glad you are back in the swing...or walk! emoticon

Earlier I posted about walking on the treadmill at an incline before and after working out.
The incline I was talking about was a 15% incline.
Yes, it was a challenge and, yes, I loved doing it.

Now I will tell you it was a very painful lesson learned.
After doing this for several days I was in serious trouble.
I had tendonitis in the ankle and could hardly walk.

Luckily it was caught in time and was treated.
It took a few days but am back on the treadmill with NO incline.
Just increasing my speed little by slowly.
Much safer for me.

I take time to do intentional walking every time I go shopping even if it is to walk around a large store more than one time per visit.
This is planned so there is no excuse to not do it.
The more this intention is put into practice the easier it gets.

Tonight I went with my daughter and her friends to walk around the Christmas light display at our City Park. Walked through the gardens and under the Live Oaks for an hour.

Glad I saw this thread! I am really not good at getting in my steps! But I can pace or jog up and down the kitchen while my tea is steeping (I drink a LOT of tea), and make sure to park far away from the store when I shop. I do already try to be less efficient at work (I clean a large church with a daycare 5 days a week), but I have to be careful about that. I tend to walk and work faster, but take more trips up and down stairs and halls...

I did find out the other day -- I was short 1000 steps late in the evening, so I jogged lightly around my living room. It took probably about 12 minutes to get that 1000 steps in...so that put it in perspective. It's not really that far...

Walk around the inside of my house. Downstairs is made so you can walk in a circle.

When my stamina gets a little better, I'll walk on my deck around the oak tree, but right now I don't think I can take going up and down the two steps that many times.

I also take a parking space farther away from the stores and appointments.
When going to the mall for any reason, I park far away from the store I'm going to.

I now walk or march in place whenever I can - - on the phone, watching TV, cooking, standing in line, pumping gas, brushing my teeth, etc. It's helping me reach 10K steps a day.

I don't have a car, but i have a bus pass. Instead of using it, i walk everywhere around the neighbourhood: for groceries, to the library, UPS, etc, etc. And a few times a week I will go out and walk the 'sea wall' (Vancouver) for a couple hours. I need all the exercise I can get!

I fold laundry in the family room down stairs and take each pile one at a time upstairs. It is 4 of us, plus linen - so 5 times up and down for each load.

I believe that I will succeed!

As a lot of people have mentioned parking far away from the store is very effective.

Recently, I figured out I can get more steps in while I shop if I leave the cart at the end of an aisle and return to drop my items in one at a time.

Oh, I did it today! We were at the hospital picking up our family member, and I had to go to the car to get his medicine to show the nurse. He was on the sixth floor. I walked down six flights of stairs, out to the parking garage, back to the hospital, and then UP all those stairs.

When I'm waiting for something, I go for a walk or sometimes arrive early and go for a walk. So if I'm meeting a friend at noon for coffee, I arrive at 11:30 and walk for 1/2 hour. Or if they are late, I walk unitl they arrive.

Sometimes, when I'm subbing I'll actually go on a walk around the block during lunch.

I just try to consciously move more. Taking the long way for everything. Walk around the house while I am waiting for things to cook for example - instead of standing or sitting! I find that it is hard on my days off of exercise to get in my steps without at least one 20 minute walk - so that is how I am handling that day. Good luck everyone!

I mostly do things that have already been mentioned, with one or two new ones:

--Park far from work and stores, and when I go to school I try to park in parking decks that are further from my classes
--Take the stairs instead of the elevator (although so far I'm only taking one floor's worth of stairs, and then taking the elevator the rest of the way. I've got to build up my endurance slowly!)
--Pace while on the phone
--Go for a leisurely walk with my fiance on the days we're not training for the upcoming 5k
--Walk to the grocery store if we only need a couple things (this is a new one! I never realized we were only half a mile from the grocery store)
--Accept challenges from my pedometer (it's a pedometer with a game, and successfully finishing challenges gives me energy points for the game, in addition to trophies if I complete enough challenges in a day) and walk around the house or around the block

One way I 'sneak' steps in is to pace while I'm brushing my hair, walk during TV commercials or when I'm cooking dinner, take one item at a time to the back of the house instead of working more efficiently.

We've tried walking the dogs, but with three dogs and two people, the walk becomes all about them. So on nice days, we get in the car and drive about half a mile to the next road. We can get in a two mile walk at our pace, and the dogs don't know that we've been walking; they think we were just out doing boring errands.

Experience is a hard teacher. She gives the test first and the lessons afterwards.

I do things like when emptying trash cans, I'll do each one seperately so I have more walking to do instead of making one trip.

I was wondering do you try and add extra steps to your day or weekly goals? How do you go about doing it in small turtle like steps?

I can honestly say for me this is how I add steps:
when on the phone I pace around my home
when I need run errands I park pretty far out despite the weather in parking lots to add more steps
I walk the dogs even when I don't feel like heading outside- its pretty hard saying "no" to puppy dog eyes and dogs spinning around with enthusiasm over going walking with mom
at work, I will move very fast through the different store areas when doing price checks or whatever
