New trick for today...I had to take the squash off my dinner because of the # of carbs already consumed...but squash is high in A Vits...so-o, I cooked up the cup of cubes in 2 cups water and mashed it down, added 10 g butter , bouillon cube dissolved in 1 cup boiling water, and nutmeg...voila a great soup of 2 servings. I have tomorrows lunch pre-made. The trick; making any veggie into a soup stretches the volume, 1/2 the calories, and you have a portion controlled left-over.

I tried using Pace Picante Sauce for salad dressing the other day and loved it! It has 10 calories in 2 tablespoons, so I used 3. It added some zing to my salad. Other brands of salsa would work good too. Or homemade salsa.

I use 2% cheese instead of full fat. I shred it myself so that it melts a little better. I also use less then the amount called for in recipes.

I make everything with reduced fat/calorie dressings, condensed soups, etc. I never buy anything full fat anymore b/c I am now used to the reduced fat stuff.

I love sugar free pudding with fruit and I make a mean "almost" sugar free banana pudding-only sugar is from the vanilla wafers.

When making gravy, remove the pan drippings. Add ice cubes to drippings. Fat will congeal and can be skimmed off. Then proceed with gravy making. Result low fat gravy.

I love Laughing Cow Cheese, and use a wedge on a baked potato half instead of butter, mix it in tuna or salmon packets for a sandwhich on Orowheat Sandwhich things, or put some on celery or lots of other uses. A wedge has 35 calories and it comes in several flavors. Great substitute for mayo or butter.

I try to avoid most processed food. I have almost no cravings when I eat real food.

Tricks and Tips

emoticon When Iím craving sweets I brush my teeth emoticon

The sweetness of the toothpaste not only satisfies the desire but having brushed keeps me from eating anything else until the next meal/snack. Water even tastes better after brushing. emoticon emoticon

And you can carry a travel size brush and tube of minty toothpaste with you for those tempting times at work or play. emoticon

Plus it keeps those pearly whites bright and shinny too.... WIN WIN emoticon emoticon

These are fabulous ideas...i will try the foil packets on the BBQ ...tomorrow!
Someone posted a recipe where you peel 4 bananas and freeze them..take them out cut them up and whip them in the blender to make the yummiest frozen dessert you can imagine (for 4)! I have been adding .5 cup of cottage cheese to get the extra protein I always am short of and it is super!

I keep cut up melon on hand for when my sweet tooth acts up. It is cold, sweet and moist. Really hits the spot. Love the chick peac suggestion 'cause I love chick peas.

I'm not a big fan of flavored tea, but when I'm craving candy sometimes flavored tea does the trick.

At night, when everyone else is eating ice cream, I satisfy the sweets urge with coffee with flavored sugar free syrup. Mint syrup makes the coffee taste like a Peppermint Patty. Yum!

When I NEED to snack mindlessly, chick peas are a great replacement for chips. Ok, maybe not "great" but it works.

A baked potato is soon done in the micro wave and is filling.I take the centre out mix in a bit of grated cheese or half a tin of sardines or even just tomato and herbs. Pile it all back in the potato shell and brown it off Makes a satisfactory fast meal. Ree emoticon

One of my favorite meals that is very tasty, very filling and low in calories is the foil pack meals. I use chicken breast, spices, onion, new potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and spray it with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray in between and all over. Bake 350' till done with the veggies tender. It seems to be one of the lowest calorie full meals I make!

I have been throwing all sorts of vegetables (whatever is on hand) into every casserole or pasta dish I prepare. It makes each serving lower in calories and have been very delicious.

It's not quite a tip but I've found it works for me. When I'm craving chocolate and I mean REALLY craving it. Keys in hand, ready to head to the store for a bag of Snicker craving, I have found that Baker's Semi-Sweet chocolate chunks are a great way to kill the craving. They're 70 calories and really yummy. It's better than cookies or candy bars or all those other things that are easy to grab.

Thanks for the topic, I'm ready to hear what everyone has to offer!

Have noticed lately that I am getting inventive around lowering cals/carbs/fats and increasing protein...I'm sure those who have been with SP longer are even better at it...so-oo, lets hear some ideas, tricks and tips so we can learn together!

For example: I add a packet of KNOX GELATINE to a box of jell-o powder and make it up according to the directions on both...this doubles the volume of jelly and cuts the calories of each serving in half.
