Cutting out soda pop was my goal for July and I did great until I got sick the end of October. I craved and drank ginger ale lots. So I'm back to trying to cut soda pop out again. My husband and I challenged each other to not drink any - I've had one this week...to keep me awake on a day of only 5 hrs of sleep. It's a work in progress, I swear the stuff is addictive.

It has been nearly a month since my last soda. I was by no means so pop junkie, but my husband is, so I was finding it in my hand much more than I liked. I also couldnt see the point in drinking my calories. I wont lie from time to time I crave one but so far its not that bog of a deal.

My last time on spark I quite soda for nearly 4 months and when I finally drank it again it tasted strange to me. Not bad just odd.

Im not saying I will never drink it again because Im sure I will have a nice cold one with a slice of pizza. But for now, those things arent something I need or want.

I gave up diet Coke January 2008 when I cut all artificial sweeteners out of my diet. I had a habit of liters/day. I had a sip of one since, but my stomach can't even tolerate it anymore.

Cutting regular pop out of my diet happened just this year. I gave it up for lent on February 17th, had one on March 17th and have not had one since. It only sounds appealing when I'm sick, but I haven't given in.

Instead I drink water, carbonated (non-sweetened) water and tea, with the occasional fruit juice or vegetable juice.

I gave up soda a long time ago - now the only time I have it is once in awhile at a restaurant. Other than that I drink water, and several times a week a sobe flavored water.

My husband and I have recently stopped drinking soda. I think we pretty much always drank diet soda/coke zero before, but we figured it would be good to cut it out of our diet. It has really helped with cravings and we drink a lot more water now - great trade off if you ask me! :)

I was utterly, completely, and helplessly addicted to CocaCola. For over 20 years I drank at least 4 cans a day, sometimes much, much more. I tried to cut back to only one a day 10 years ago but it didn't last.

I'm happy to say that I drank my last Coke at 11:30AM June 24, 2009. It was really hard to quit cold turkey, but now I am glad I did. Since June 24th I have lost 25 pounds. I think that not drinking Coke helped a lot.

I have. I gave them up about 6-8 months ago. I've had the ocassional diet coke or diet dr. pepper (no more than 10 in the last 6-8 months).

I found that when I drank Diet Coke (loved my DC and had about 5-8 a day at one point) I would crave chocolate and usually gave into that craving. I also had bad cystic acne and when I gave up the diet pop the constant cystic acne went away. Now its only lovely times of the month when it springs up bad but not like it was.

I have the hardest time not drinking it when I have pizza :)

I drank diet sodas soon as it was "developed" because my dad was diabetic so that's what we had.
I only drank them occasionally then, and only occasionally now... maybe 1-2 some weeks.

I can't recall when I limited soda, but I remember buying it and my son was drinking it like it was water. It was an expense we could do without. I don't buy it.

When I'm out I tend to request water with lemon, or tea, coffee. But never soda.

I gave up Coke years ago, but that was because of the company's (alleged) practices in South America. (I also boycott Nestle for the terrible things they did in Africa, too.) Makes things a lot easier, IMO!

But I have to say, I cut back a little on soda but haven't cut them out entirely. We buy Whole Foods generic sodas. Only carbonated water, ascorbic acid, sugar (not HFCS), and whatever flavoring they use -- lemon/lime, cola nut, cherry, ginger, etc. No phosphates, no caffeine. Plus it's more money for a six pack, which forces me to cut back if only for my budget's sake.

I avoid all sugary drinks, except for the Gatorade I chug while I'm training for a half marathon.
I also try to avoid diet drinks b/c I find that they make me crave sugar.
The hardest part was packing my lunch - a can of pop is easy to throw in there. Now I take a big insulated bottle full of iced green tea, which is a good substitute for diet pop.

I have been a diet drinker for years but switched to flavored water 3 or 4 yrs. ago. I still drink an occasional diet soda when we go out, but usually just water.

I QUIT ALL SODA several years back, probably the first move I made on quest for health, & also from concern for environment. I still fall for a can of Arizona Green Tea occasionally, but mostly drink plain water, from a thermos.

When I found out the mfgs. were using rat poison better known as ASPARTAME in diet soda's I about
passed out from fright.

I quit drinking all soda over ten years ago, only
drink water. Soda is so full of sodium which causes
weight retention, too, and I have enough problems
losing.

It's something I'm working on. After reading the ingredient list on my Fresca yesterday I'm really tempted to pitch the rest of the cans - there's some nasty sounding stuff in there.

I don't know that I will ever completely give up my regular coke, but I've cut way, way back. There was a time when I'd drink a quart at lunch, now I'm down to a 12 oz. can every few days.

I gave up soda several years ago, I used to have the occasional Diet Dr. Pepper, but not even that anymore, can't tolerate anything carbonated with reflux disease. I drink plain water 98% of the time, sometimes herbal tea (hot & iced) and if I splurge I'll have a coffee latte (decaf, sugar free, fat free!).

God bless you all and congratulations to all of you. I have not and do not believe in any fiber of my being that I can give up my diet soda. Though I have tried in the past. I swear I bleed brown and fizzy. i won't say how many I drink a day it is way to embarassing considering that you all have managed to do it.

I too started drinking with TAB. I never liked regular soda even as a child. And believe it or not, the doctor told my mother to have me drink soda for the sodium content due to me having low enough blood pressure that I was on medication. It was a way to trick me into it. I wouldn't eat anything that had salt in it. I could even tell you which cookies were baked with salt and which were not.

That is not my excuse now.

My doctor told me that I should cut out the soda (and I only drank diet) for my bones. I never drank a whole bunch, but now the only time I have it is when I'm riding in the car on mountain roads (I swear that the bubbles help settle my stomach).

I've replaced the soda with water and unsweet tea (I live in Tennessee, where iced tea comes in "sweet" and "unsweet" and you have to specify).

Who has given up Soft Drinks/Soda/Pop? ME emoticon OMG that article is down right scary... I'm going to send it to everyone I know.. thanks Carolyn

Gave up diet soda emoticon years ago when I found out aspartame becomes toxic if not kept refrigerated plus I began to notice I craved diet Pepsi/Coke but it never quenched my thirst so I always wanted more and more. Changed to non-diet and actually lost weight!!!! emoticon Then I was able to cut my consumption from 1-2 cans a day to maybe 2 cans a week... since joining SP I've cut it out all together. Thanks SP!! emoticon

I had a drink of my DH Coke the other day and it tasted so bad I couldn't believe it. Now it's water, emoticon water, emoticon water and more water. emoticon With an occasional iced green tea with honey when we go out. Oh and a cup of coffee each morning just to get things going emoticon

Like LRWRIGHT, I started drinking sodas back in the early 60's with Tab or Fresca, moved on to coke, then diet coke. A few years ago, started having headaches frequently and a friend mentioned that she can't use foods or drinks with aspertame in them. I looked deeper into the foods and drinks I was using and found alot were using aspertame. I started looking for alternates and came up with diet caffeine-free sodas, with Splenda in them and the headaches went a way. I now only have about 1, maybe 2 of them a daily but usually have iced caffeine-free tea (brewed weak) and only a touch of sugar, or splenda to sweeten it. Most the rest of the fluids I have is water.

I never used to drink more than just a handful of any type of sodas in any given year, then began having terrible migraines and the doc said that caffeine would help with them. I drank coffee instead. All my meds for my MS really upset my stomach and one day at lunch with my SIL I did have a diet Pepsi and low and behold, the stomach pain subsided. I was hooked ever since.

Then I gave them up for about 5 months, about 7 months ago, but the illness and headaches have been more intense lately so unfortunately am back to one a day now on most days. I wish I could stop them entirely. I know the caramel coloring in them is no good for you but I can't stand the see-through sodas so stick with the diet Pepsi. Good luck to everyone else giving them up though. It's tough.

I have been addicted to and drinking diet sodas since TAB back in the late 60's. Started doing it for the caffeine while pulling "all nighters" preparing papers and studying in college. I gave up Coke Zero and any other colored soda about 3 months ago. Now I have cut way back on Sprite Zero, but still have 2 or 3 a day while at work.

The last time I had a soft drink was last week and that was because there was nothing else to drink! Before that, I had a soda in Canada back in December 2010. Overall, I prefer water, then will come a juice or tea or coffee. Sodas are NOT in my house.

I've never drunk soda and my kids only got it as a treat during parties at other places. Otherwise they don't drink it either. My daughter (21) drinks milk or water and has always been slim.

I have MAYBE 1 soda a week, nothing but diet coke. Although if I was having a coktail, I'd branch out and try ginger ale.

Water-water-waaaaaaater. And 1 cup of coffee in the morning.

Might get 1 c. skim milk if I look ath the nutrition tracker and the pritein's low....but really water's all I need.

Just made the decision to give up pop this weekend. I am in the throes of caffeine withdrawal now-yuck.

I drink sparkling water cuz I like the bubbles!

gave them up many years ago, and my kids joined in shortly afterwards. We drink water mostly, but also unsweetened flavored teas (we love mixing several flavors together, like peach, raspberry, tangerine & pomegranite), and I usually make two huge pitchers at a time. We also drink soy milk.

I drink about 2 Diet Coke/Diet Pepsi per month (20 ounces). About 2 times a YEAR I drink a 20 oz regular Mountain Dew. My goal is to drink 1 or 2 Diet drinks per year!
I used to drink diet drinks every single day 2 or 3 cans) for about 25 years.
Nowadays, I drink mostly water, black tea in the AM and sometimes a tea in the evening (noncaffeinated tea) I cannot drink green tea. I throws off my INR (blood clotting).
I love the smell of coffee, I hate the taste and the way it makes me feel.
I have come a long way. emoticon

I gave up soft drinks about three years ago (wow!!!), and I haven't even missed them. I used to drink a 2 liter Pepsi every day--sometimes 2 of them. Now I mainly drink water. I maybe drink 3 glasses of soda a year--if that much.

I can't drink sodas. I don't eat much sugar, and so they are too sweet.

I did a couple of years ago. I do have an occasional Dr Pepper or coke once in a while (like no more than every 2 months or so). I don't do diet, since I can't stand the artificial sweetener taste. I still will have an iced tea sometimes at a restaurant - I put 1 sugar and 1 sweet & low in it (I like it really sweet tasting and sweet & low gets it there - the sugar cuts some of the art flavor).

For an alternative, you can use the kool-aid or other single serving powders you add to water.

Diet drinks are too sweet for me. Just plain ole' kool-aid (once in a while) and Iced tea or coffee with Carnation milk no sweetner.

I don't drink reg soda and quit drinking diet pop of any kind for so long that now the reg soda smells like pure sugar, to strong for me, and the diet just smells nasty. I'm truly thankful for this because I was drinking an immense amount of diet coke everyday, as in 3 - 2liters everyday. I was a coke-aholic. Whew glad that's over with and my guts feel much better now. I did this about 20 yrs ago.

I do drink my crystal light maybe once or twice a week if the weather is hot enough to quench my thirst with one glass of it. Otherwise I drink green tea, espresso/americano's and once in a while I like a cup of reg coffee. Tried decaf, yuck !

Other than that I drink water water water and water lol.

I gave up drinking soda almost twenty years ago when I read an article about how the phosphorus in the soda leeches the calcium from your bones.

I'm 65 now and whenever I get a bone density test, I'm told I have the bones of a 20-year old.

I rarely have a pop and when I do, it seems so sweet now...too much so. I'm not into diet pop. That's not good for me either.

Gimme water, coffee, low sodium tomato juice, or tea anytime...my drinks of choice!

The health articles say that soft drinks are not good for us. Here is one of them:

I need to get off of Pop entirely because of my bones but have not yet done so, although I am trying to cut down on the Diet Coke.

Have you totally given up Soft Drinks/Pop? Have you modified how much soft drink you drink? If you have given up soft drinks, what other low calorie drink, besides water, do you drink?
