For the life of me, I cannot ever remember waking up in the middle of the night hungry. I have had insomnia for many years so do not turn out my light until midnight, I fall asleep right away and usually sleep until 5:30 or 6:00 and have learned to get along on the amount of sleep. I do not get up in the middle of the night because if I do, then I cannot go back to sleep. Guess we are all individuals and each does what suits them.

Tammy - I've done the pb thing, too. My fast bgl is usually my highest of the day, but the pb doesn't spike it, thank goodness!

I've got fasting blood work tomorrow. Fingers crossed that I'll get to reduce my metformin.

I used to wake up a lot when I was younger feeling sick. Now, when I wake up with a grumbley stomach I eat an antacid, like Tums. It may be hunger, but taking a Tums puts me right back in bed. I may drink a little water, too. I go to bed late and wake up early. Even if I was hungry, I'm usually too tired to even care.

Speaking of TV, I've read of "studies" lately that point to ambient light, The Microwaves from cell phones left on on the bedside table and the artificial brain activity caused by watching TV (reading a book doesn't cause this brain excitement) as possible causes of not being able to sleep or waking in the middle of the night.

I know, we were talking about hunger, but I'm just saying. LOL

i too wake up thirsty, not hungry - I keep a hospitol style drinking cup of water bedside for mid-night sips. If I can't get to sleep. a cup of warm milk &/or a banana usually works, plus turning out the lights for last hour of TV.

If I woke up hungry my blood sugar in the past has been 135 or so. not low. SO I just ignore it if I'm hungry.

BTW, there's been articles out about how waking up to eat is bad for you but I can't remember why, just that it's a bad sign.

The only time I eat in the middle of the night is if I can't sleep either. I sometimes wake anywhere between 2am and 4am and I'm usually awake for 2 hours. that'll sometimes make me think I'm awake for the day and make me hungry. then I take my blood sugar reading and eat breakfast before I go back to bed. LOL

4 oz of skim milk
or
1 tablespoon of peanut butter and a glass of water

Hunger for diabetic in middle of night usually low blood sugar.

Some carbs and protein to satisfy for about 3-4 hours without spiking early morning blood sugar.

I make sure I have a couple crackers or a couple of pieces of melba toast, along with water to wash it down. Acts as a sponge .. I have always had stomach problems as well as general hunger. Then I go back to sleep ..

I usually don't wake up in the middle of the night hungry but it's before I go to bed that I might feel hunger pangs! I drink a glass of cold water in the summer and some hot green tea in the winter months.

This hasn't happened to me in a long time but when it did, I wanted a warm drink to help me go back to sleep.

If you wake up in the middle of the night, hungry, have a very cold orange, and then brush/floss your teeth. The orange helps with your sweet tooth and the flossing keeps you from eating any more.
