I must track everything I eat to be accountable for it and drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.

The Nutrition Tracker is essential for me - I must actually account for what I put in my mouth. Even if I have a bit too many chips, if I write them down, I am accountable and this has helped me make new eating habits.

Also, I made a "10 minute a day" exercise goal for myself. This helps me on low motivation days, as after the 10 minutes is over, I can choose (guilt-free) whether to stop or not. I almost always do 30 minutes or more, but I don't have to. This has helped me build a healthful new habit, almost painlessly. Since January, I've only missed my daily 10 minutes five times. When I do miss, I know that I will go back the next day, and I do.

1. Don't panic, go to start and read everthing.. Do the list like a slave, read instructions and again if anything doesn't stick, then ask if you have understood stuff. Someone will answer the question..
2. Have your nutrition and exercise page visible and a ordinary photo- clothing on please..

Sometimes I feel new people get upset at information because we are guessing.. As much info as possible, sparks is a tease free zone..

I can't find people again to look stuff up unless they e-mail me with a link.. So ask them the above for future reference..

I know people are shy, but I don't like giving info to empty profiles and home pages.. Nice people have been taken in by people whom are button pushers..

I don't know if there is no info if I am giving ammunition to a eating disorder suffer whom actually needs help..

I am not be anti new people, but I was shocked to offend a lady sitting in a wheel chair in my early days and no where did she at any stage mention she was disabled- that's vital critical info to avoid offensive remarks that would be okayed by other newbies whom can walk around..

Information on home pages and profiles avoids peoples feeling they are getting stomped on.. It can help us whom have time give a deeper answer..

I have been e-mailed and thanked for information.. Some people really appreciate a extra pair of eyes scanning their nutrition when the scales really tease.. Alot of great work happens behind the scenes when this info is available..

Also how people accept info from the older hard core sector also makes a difference.. If someone says that burger meal will count- don't get offensive.. I understand it is rough being called out- look at my profile before you call me a loser and a amateur.. I have been called out worse ways than many people whom are just removing a few pounds.. I have had social workers judge my parenting ablities looking my 306lb profile up and down..

I must do something right to keep my weight off sweetie.. You abusing me doesn't make me feel like reaching out to help others for more abuse..

I just put a Sticky on this thread so that it will be easy for new members to find. I imagine that January will bring us many new members, either to new people to SparkPeople or people who have been on SP but who are new to our team.

Team members........... feel free to leave your tips here. Please help answer questions of new members. Thanks.

I don't always use the nutritional tracker, but what I do find helpful is the Quick Tracker to track my water intake and fruits/veggies. It also allows you to create a custom goal; a feature I used when I was following the points system. This feature is located on the Start Page.

Keep it simple; start with the nutrition and fitness trackers. Then while you're doing that, look around the site; read articles, watch videos, oh yeah, and post to your team emoticon

Blogging is a great idea too - I'd never blogged before and always thought it to be somewhat pretentious, but when I look back over my earlier blogs I get a good laugh.

Be honest with yourself. My best lesson is to track your food intake, track your fitness, and be HONEST about both—that means every small bite matters, no matter how small. Don't be afraid of logging the big ones either.

Be accountable. Find a SparkTeam that will help you with your goals. Keep in close touch with the SparkPeople community for motivation and encouragement. These people will be your lifelines when you need support.

Surround yourself with positive influences. This goes hand in hand with being accountable. Make sure your lifelines are positive and supportive. Negative people will only drag you down.

My motto is this: One bite at a time, One step at a time, One day at a time. If I CAN do this, so can YOU! I BELIEVE in you! Go out there and make your future!

I floundered around for ages on Spark until I got the hang of it - doing the fast breaks and setting up streaks really did help me to establish new habits although it took a long time. I have been so grateful for the friends I have made on here - there is always always someone who will offer support and I try to do the same in return. We all try to pick each other up when we falter and encourage each others' successes when things are going well.

This particular team is just wonderful - it has taken all the pressure off me to race to the finish line which is what I have always done previously with dieting. The Slowest Loser Team has given me permission to take my time and do it slowly and properly - both with regard to food and exercise. It IS slow but it is going extremely well and for me it is definitely the way forward.

One thing that really helped me when I first started was to do all of the things that would earn me SparkPoints, because most of it was about educating myself. Read the articles, take the polls, answer the trivia questions, etc.

The other great tool that I love is the nutrition tracker. I found that when I tracked EVERYTHING I was more successful than when I tracked a meal or two here and there.

Finally, ASK QUESTIONS!!! There are so many people here that have felt or are feeling what you are, have experienced similar situations, etc.

WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME to all of our new team members!

First= Welcome. Next- connect and communicate. Use all the resources on the site especially your peers. We are all in this together. And remember there is no such thing as a stupid question. Ask, because there are probably many other members who would also like to know.

My number one piece of advice, after saying "Welcome!" is:

Ask questions! :-)

I'm still fairly new here and I still ask lots of questions.

Also, let your Start page (the one you are transferred to after you login) be your best friend because it will guide you to almost everywhere you will want to be on a daily basis.

Hugs,

My initial advice to people new to SparkPeople and all people on this team is that you are VERY WELCOMED here. Please feel free reply to any of the posts that interest you and will help you. Feel free as well to start posts.

A second advice would be to join the TEAM GOALS that are posted towards the end of the Slowest Losers Team page. After joining these goals, then each day you can click off your participation under "Tool" and "Other Goals". That will give the team credit for your participation. Thanks.

Please feel "at home" here on the SLOWEST LOSERS team!

Many on our Slowest Losers team members are new to SparkPeople. If you were to give them advice as to how to maneuver around SP or what you find has helped you the most on SparkPeople, what would you say? If you are a new member and have a question about the Site, please post it here and I'm sure SOMEONE or MANY will give you advice.
