Something else I find helpful: I get in bed and set the sleep timer, watching a favorite show, but in a comfy position! If I fall asleep I do miss the last few minutes of a good show...my hubby can usually fill me in on the details later, lol. I love the feeling of drifting off, but know that if I'm not truly sleepy, I am resting and ready to go to sleep whenever!

Relaxation....a great goal.

#1 Decorate sparkPage for fall. Done! My fall picture may not look like the typical fall colors (which I miss!) because I live in south Louisiana. The swamp scene is more typical here.

I will let you know which other goals I choose.

Physicians, physical therapist, and other health care providers will come and go, BUT only you can serve as your body's CEO

Oh, my goodness...someone read my mind, lol! I'm Mary and I teach 1st grade. When I come home from school I have at least an hour and sometimes 2-3 hours more work ahead of me. I take a couple of naps a week just to unwind so that will be an easy thing to continue. I make greeting cards and love doing that for my 'me' time. I also have added 10 minutes of stretching or just breathing quietly to my exercise routine. I injured my ankle about 5 weeks ago and can't do anything like walking or jogging until it's completely healed. Yoga and Pilates combined together are my exercises for the moment.

Here is the link to the article I read about sleep:
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/wellness_articles.asp?id...
It dealt with how lack of sleep can hinder weight loss efforts. It was a good one for me to read because I am one of those people who tries to cram in as much as I can everyday by getting up earlier and earlier. Early morning is the only time I have to exercise, so.... the cycle continues. This week, on the day I take off from exercising, I am going to set the alarm an hour later (without feeling guilty!)

I went for a long walk in the woods and then a drive in the county to see the fall colours. Cant nap in the day unless I'm really sick. Yesterday I did lots of work but listening to my music ( my boyfriends: Neil Diamond & Rod Stewart )really relaxed my mind.

1&2 I hadn't planned to either take a nap or alter my sleeping patterns but I was utterly exhausted this week and in fact took a 2 hour nap on Wed. because I just couldn't stay awake. I almost never take naps, so this was a big surprise. emoticon ???

3. Read a book for pleasure at least three times this week. YES! Read for at least a a half an hour every day except today. emoticon

4. Do your exercises and then STRETCH exercise at least 3 times this week. YES! emoticon

7. Find at least one SparkArticle on SLEEP and post the link here and make comments on the article that you read. Did not find time to look, though to be fair I've read most if not all of the SparkArticles on sleep already, so it wasn't a big priority.

8. Let us know on this thread what makes you RELAX. What is relaxing to YOU? Will do when I've had more time to think about it.

I gave this some thought over the week and the things that help me best to relax:

*Candles (need a safe, paper free area to light them though, so I didn't do that this week.)
*Certain kinds of music--I even have a play list of relaxing music on my ipod. One of the most relaxing cds I have is Pachobel's cannon with ocean sounds in the background--not something I dare listen to while driving! Nakai's Native American flute music is also on that list, as is the glass Harmonica music I have.
*Reading. Reading is a must for me; if I don't read, it's not a good sign.
*Crafts, specifically knitting, beading, and various types of kumihimo. I realized this summer that this is my form of meditation--a kind of active meditation where I'm very focused on what I'm doing--not on papers that need to be written, deadlines coming up, household chores that need to be done, etc.
emoticon

10. You name what you plan to do for Relaxation. Will think of something.
Kumihimo on the karakumidai, which I did today. emoticon

I took two naps this week and actually went to bed earlier almost every night. I used visualisation in my meditation three times this week. BUT, I am addicted. I tried to limit my time on Spark People and COULD NOT DO IT. I think I need help.emoticon

I actually took a nap in bed yesterday afternoon. First time in months. It was not long but I woke up so groggy.

Also, because of my internet being down for awhile this week, I have had a forced partial SparkBreak.

I went two evenings with no online activity after supper.

We've been taking it easy this week. Next week we'll get back to the Basics!

I'll work on napping this weekend.

I read all the time, so that should be easy.

I love stretching and yoga, so can get that in.

I will work on getting a stroll or yoga in at night since I work out in the morning.

This is a toughie...

1. Aside from weekends, there is no time for me to nap... and on the weekend I will sleep in instead.

2. I normally go to bed ~9/930. I work from 7 to 5, get up at 6 to get to work on time. Get home from work around 6 unless I need to stop somewhere. 6-9 is spent cooking/eating/cleaning. I can't go to bed earlier. Again, except for weekends.

3. Ok, so reading should be easy, but by the time I can sit down and read, I'm in bed, read a page or two and am asleep. I used to be an avid reader :( I really miss it.

4. Stretching shouldn't be that difficult. Put this on my to do list!

5. I work at the computer. I am on the computer from 7am to 5pm minus my lunch break. This makes it difficult to limit my computer time.

6. I will walk home fgorm the skytrain at least three times this week.

7. I did the spark sleep quiz this morning. I no longer have the link. I got 10/10! Wooh.

8. I love the shower. I'll sit in the tub with the hot water running over me for up to an hour just sitting enjoying the warmth and wet.

9. I don't often spark on weekends, so every weekend (almost) is a sparkbreak.

10. I'm going to do numbers 4 & 6. Go for a walk and stretch.

I love the ideas for this week!

I am going to do:

1. Take a nap at least one day this week.
I'm a regular napper so this won't be a problem! haha

2. Go to bed earlier than usual at least two nights this week.
Already did this once this week, last night. Another time will be good for me too.

3. Read a book for pleasure at least three times this week.
I will enjoy this one! Giving myself permission to read for fun -- yes!

8. Let us know on this thread what makes you RELAX. What is relaxing to YOU?

-- being with my husband and chatting with him
-- being still and quiet, praying
-- sitting outside and enjoying nature
-- reading
-- listening to relaxing music
-- watching good tv

I am WAY ahead of myself!! I didn't know that this was going to be the challenge and today when I woke up I did something that I have been wanting to do for a REALLY long time!! I GOT A MASSAGE TODAY!!!! WOOHOO!!!!

Now for the rest of the challenge...

Napping is NOT an issue for me...I LOVE naps....so that is one I will do...

I am going to the library to get a book...I read 2 in the last 2 weeks...so I am going to have to go and get another one...

I did the spark break yesterday...I worked last night so I didn't post yesterday...

Relaxing for me is something that I have worked on a lot...I have kids and a husband with a chronic illness and obviously I am an ER nurse...so I have a lot of stress!!

I'm sure having a problem relaxing this week because of several factors. One is that I can't figure out how to fix the internet and I have to come to the office to get online. Everyone expects ME to fix the system. I have worked HOURS AND DAYS trying to get the internet go go to our houses. At least it goes to the hospital itself and to our office where the internet hub is located
emoticon

Friends, I plan to put my "Spark Break" on my profile photo and take a partial break but I am still on this thread.... so keep relaxing! I think that making most people THINK that I'm on SparkBreak will actually be the best way that I can relax!

emoticon

Just remember..... if you see the SparkBreak profile..... I'm not breaking from the SL Team!

This is a really good for me--I learned while one vacation that I have a very hard time truly relaxing--I'm always moving and thinking and planning and going going going. I've been told by a lot of friends and family I need to SLOW DOWN but I don't know how. Even when I don't have anything that I have to do, I have a hard time slowing down.

Speaking of which, can anyone tell me about the stress buster challenge? Sounds like something I might profit from.

Anyway...

1&2 Not for me really as written, at least. I just don't do naps--I can't sleep during the day unless I'm sick, even when I'm exhausted. And I have enough trouble sleeping (insomnia issues) that I don't want to mess with my sleep schedule. But I will try to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. And tonight I might actually manage to get to bed early and sleep hard (so tired).

3. Read a book for pleasure at least three times this week. YES, Please! Sign me up!

4. Do your exercises and then STRETCH exercise at least 3 times this week. To me stretching is like relaxing. I need to get back to stretching regularly.

5. Limit the time that you are on your computer at least 4 days this week. Let us know your plan to do this. Not an option because of school work.

6. After a long day, relax take a walk or and have a chat with a friend or else phone someone who is an encouragement to you at least three times this week. No, not for me. More stressful than stress reducing for me to try to rearrange things to fit that schedule.

7. Find at least one SparkArticle on SLEEP and post the link here and make comments on the article that you read. Yes, if I can find one I haven't already read.

8. Let us know on this thread what makes you RELAX. What is relaxing to YOU? Will do when I've had more time to think about it.

9. Take a SparkBreak Day and do no sparking but the essential...spinning the wheel and tracking for instance. ? Does this include exercise, or just time on sparks? I can cut back on time on sparks, though I don't want to cut it out entirely because it's motivational for me and I really need that to keep going, but I'm trying to get back on the wagon re: healthy lifestyles and don't want to lose momentum. I'm struggling as it is.

10. You name what you plan to do for Relaxation. Will think of something.

Cooking relaxes me, so I love weekends when I can cook all I want to. Today is cabbage rolls in the Crock Pot, tomorrow I'm trying Chef Meg's Almond Shortbread cookies, grilling some cod, steaming broccoli and baking potatoes. The rest of the week is planned, except for Wednesday when we usually order in, because Thursday is garbage day and DH hates to have a lot of dishes to do when he has to deal with the garbage too.

Matter of fact, got to go start the cabbage rolls now. Later, relaxed turtles!

Well, this is my last week of the Stress Buster Challenge, so doing this would be good too. OK, my goals for this week are:

1. Do yoga for 10 minutes a day.
2. Exercise 4 days of the week.
3. Write in my journal 3 days out of the week.

Let's go team!!!!

This is a great challenge. It's been so hectic with work, classes and other activities I've found little time to relax. So for my challenge I will:

1)MAKE time to read at least 30 minutes 3 times this week

2) Watch at least 3 shows I've DVR'd over the last month!

3) Take 30 minutes to unwind twice this week after I get home from work before I do anything else.

I like the idea in theory. Not always practical to put all into operation. I do cross stitching every evening which helps me unwind. I do cat napt too as I am an insomniac so I often lie awake half the night.

Computer time! We are all reluntant to give that up My way is to earn my time. I start every day with logging on huddling and tracking. I do a few chores then read all e mails some get left to be answered later.
I do more chores and then answer mail do updates etc. It makes me get on with ironing or what ever if I think I am earning some puter time once this is done. Happy relaxing from Reeemoticon

I like this week's focus. I have felt a bit overwhelmed by SP for several days----read too much, ponder too much, plan too much, on computer too much. You get the idea. Sooooooo, I am going to take some computer breaks this week so I can do some other things. Even if I do chores with this extraa time, it will relax me to see something completed.

It is late and I need to head off to shower and sleep. Sunday morning worships seems to come mighty early some weeks! I will review your list and decide what other goals I might aim for.

Physicians, physical therapist, and other health care providers will come and go, BUT only you can serve as your body's CEO

What helps me to relax...
1) Playing with my animals.
2) Do Yoga...which I haven't done in quite some time now.
3) Reading
4)Getting outside and walking or gardening.
5) Exercising helps me to relax.
6) Watching a funny show or movie.
7) Spending time with family and friends.

Those are some of the things that I can think of off the top of my head.

Great challenge:-) I'm in for relaxing week! I'll do the following:

3. Read a book for pleasure at least three times this week.
4. Do your exercises and then STRETCH exercise at least 3 times this week. To me stretching is like relaxing.
5. Limit the time that you are on your computer at least 4 days this week. Let us know your plan to do this. (I'll do this by just allowing myself an hour in the morning and an hour at night. I'm usually on more than that. This will give me extra time to get my reading in:-)
8. Let us know on this thread what makes you RELAX. What is relaxing to YOU?

Fun!

I'll do 1, 4, and maybe 9. I'm addicted to SP so I'm not sure I'll be able to do 9, that's a bit extreme, but if I can make it through Sunday without Sparking, except to Spin, Track, and huddle, I'll be good.

Grand success to everyone. Have a great one!

A wonderful idea. I will take a nap probably today and go to bed earlier. Will also meditate. I love to do visualisationemoticonemoticon

Will do #1 although this is not very hard with two very active boys.

What I find relaxing? probably either sitting and reading or sitting and knitting or crocheting while watching TV.

I love the idea of Relaxation week.
1. to nap once a week won't work for me, don't nap unless I am sick.
2. early to bed twice this week, I am such a night person that it would really be difficult.
3. read a book 3 times a week, I read all the time.
so how about if I sit and quilt or crochet??
4. exercise and then stretch 3 times - I do this regularly after each swim session.
5. limit puter time 4 times a week - This isn't for me since my puter time is mostly on Sparks and I find alot of encouragement and ideas here so I don't want to limit that. Same with number 9.
6. walk or phone a friend - now that I think I can do, have several friends or family members that I need to spend time on the phone with.
7. Read and report or share a link on sleep. No thanks!! Hate doing reports.
8. & 10. what is my relaxation?? I Love to sit next to my hubby and watch some TV show together, talk and hold hands. hugs, cheryl

Sounds like a great challenge. My problem would be posting a link so I won't do that. I just don't know how and don't want to learn. But there are great articles and I look forward to reading more!

Here is a link for an article called "How Insomnia can Hinder Weight Loss":

Note: I find most of these relaxation suggestions helpful except for one. Reading articles, taking polls, and such on Spark People makes me happy and relaxed--not stressed. I plan to continue doing these activities.
