Thw way my clothes fit, followed by how I feel after I exercise and what the scale says, are what motivates me.

Even though I know that this should not be the most important motivator, I must admit that seeing the numbrs on the scale drop motivates me the most.

I agree with you that when we are feeling fit and have more ambition and our clothes fit better, we can again love ourselves and get serious about losing more weight. Here is to a great August for losing and feeling fit!

Two things motivate me The 1st thing that got me really started was when I ordered 2 pair of pants in the size I've been wearing for the last couple of years and couldn't zipper them and the other is my knees have been hurting since I started to gain weight again emoticon

My motivation? Knowing that all the little things I do to be healthy count. I don't have to feel like a failure for not working out like an athlete several hours a day. Every day feels like a fresh start! I'm always more motivated at the beginning of a project, so why not think of every day as the beginning.

What motivated me to start was my "Butt started to bounce when I walked and that was it for me"...also what keeps me motivated is my butt stopped bouncing and I went from a 18 tight 16 to a 14, working my way down...just the overall changes has kept me motivated! AND keeping my eyes on my short term goals as well as my long term.

I have 2 motivations. One is the fact that none of the clothes in my closet or drawers fit . I have only 4 out fits for everyday and 1 or 2 for dress up that I can wear. I want to get back into my size 14 clothes again and go down from there. My second motivation is that I want to be able to do more things with my family. My husband and I used to go out dancing every weekend but now we can't because I have nothing to wear and I am too embarrassed to go. I am also an embarrassment to my 16 year old son. He does not want to do anything with me because of my weight. He does not even want his friends to meet me because of it.

My motivation ebbs and flows like the all the oceans of this world...on a daily basis. I am constantly in search of that ONE thing that will get me there and keep there forever. I haven't found it yet, so I grab inspiration from where ever I can. Right now I am loving So You Think You Can Dance. I always wanted to dance, but life and choices took me in other directions. When I watch this show I imagine myself dancing and know that if I ever want any part of that dream to come true, I have to be healthy and in good shape...plus the music on the show makes me want to move!

My motivation is my health. I'm almost 33 and I was on 2 blood pressure medications, a thyroid medication, and was told my triglycerides are high. Working out has given me so much more energy. I don't sit aroung falling asleep all the time and I love the sweat and the high I get from a good workout. I'm now down to 1 blood pressure medication (and my thyroid med) and I'm going back to the doctor in a couple of weeks to see if I've lowered my triglycerides. Even if I haven't, I'll know that I did all I could to try!

I would say, first and foremost, my dad's passing 6 years ago at the age of 55 with heart disease and diabetes. The other 2 motivations is my husband looking at me and telling me I look fabulous and my children seeing me eating healthy and exercising and telling me I'm doing a great job. Leading by example! Good luck everyone!!

My motivation is in how I can get up and down off the floor without grabbing something, and feeling better and not struggle to do the simple things and my son who is athletic and want to be there for him.

Short term motivation...my daughter's upcoming wedding...I don't wish to have my arms resemble Rocky the Flying Squirrel's when I wave hello to someone or feel the need to hide behind 3 people...1 person is ok...the main, longterm motivation is to not feel so tired...I have permanent injuries to both my lower legs...that doesn't mean I have to have permanent injuries to my outlook on life!!...So...'slow and steady' is my mantra...Turtles of Spark Unite hehehehe...Peace&Hugs, Beany

I've been fat all my life and until recently wouldn't say it has held me back. Then I took a look at the long list of things I either couldn't physically do, couldn't comfortably do or wasn't allowed to do because of my weight when planning a recent vacation.

I decided that my husband deserves better than all these restrictions and SO DO I!!

I'm losing the weight so I can live my life. The benefits to my health are a strong secondary motivation.

I think my motivation shifts and changes, but basically, I want to be healthy and active - I have changed a lot on the inside of me over the last few years and I want my outsides to match. The other motivational factors are clothes - I like clothes and want to dress better!

Postive change like seeing my existing wardrobe get looser feeds more motivation into my system. Getting out of bed in the morning in a smooth leap (okay, 'leap' might overstating it a bit!) instead of grunting, groaning and hobbling is a huge improvement and very motivating! Some of those postive changes have been subtle enough that it took a while to notice, but I'll take anything positive I can get right now to keep me going!

After two fairly serious injuries/operations that reduced my activity and increased my dependence on others in the last 2 years, my motivation is that I desperately want to feel GOOD again and FULLY ALIVE! I am turning 50 in November and I am determined to make this a celebration of my life (as opposed to a depression). SparkPeople is helping me get there!

WORKINGANGEL1.. Try wearing a pedometer which will count your steps. When you find out how many steps you average a day, try just increasing your steps by 500 or 1000 steps a week. You'll find that just increasing your steps, will get you more active. There is a Pedometer thread on the team. Check it out.

What motivates you to lose weight, to get healthier?
For me its looking good in clothes, feeling good, and not having back and knee pain because of weight.
I just want to be healthy, and look and feel healthy!

When I started this in January my goal was not to have goals. To just let it happen and not get wrapped up in the obsessions that cause me to fail every time. All I was going to do is walk. And it worked, that's all I did the rest of the winter. Then, because I felt stronger, I started adding other exercises and walking further. That worked. 15 pounds fell away. Now I track food and it's not so bad. 4 more pounds gone.

On the other hand I do have a superficial goal. My friend is coming from California for a visit. For years he has laughed at my lack of desire for exercise. I haven't told him I'm doing anything other than what he knows I do. I want to give him a WOW moment. I visualize him walking right past me at the airport because I look so different. He's coming in a week and although I haven't got to the WOW stage, even he should see a difference. And when we go on his favorite dune walk, I'll be in the lead and not grumbling. emoticon

What motivates me to become healthier is my 9 year old son. I am a late in life Mom and I want to be around to see him grow up. My mother was obese most of her adult life, she suffered a host of health problems and died at the age of 49 due to heart failure ... I am 49 now and I don't want to repeat my family history of obesity and poor health.

What motivates me is seeing some progress...either on the scales or having my clothes fit better. But, the one thing I just can't seem to get motivated to do is exercise. I know all the reasons to do it, but I can find a million other things to do instead.

Well, I can't seem to get motivated at all right now, but I have been before and I will again soon. Right now I am 325 lbs, 40 years old and take a low dose of a blood pressure medicine. I am mobile enough to do whatever I want, without limitations. I know time is running out on me unless I do something. So my motivation is to get my health in order while it's still a choice and not a necessity.

I am motivated to lose weight because of diseases I already have or have had: high blood pressure, acid reflux and ovarian cancer (6 year cancer survivor), osteoarthritis of the knees, osteoporosis, and I could list a few others that would improve if I lost weight.

I am also motivated to lose weight because I have a family history of diabetes, heart disease and colon cancer. I want to prevent these.

It would sure be nice to be able to buy smaller clothes as well!

Each of us are motivated to loose weight by different things: our own health, family history of disease, prevention of Disease, peer pressure, our looks, clothes that fit will or do not fit, mirrors, scales, work, traveling, desire for long life, etc. What motivates YOU?

What motivates you to lose weight, to get healthier?
