Talk about STRESS IN THE MOMENT: Toddled over to the doctor today. I've had intermittent lower abdomen pain for the last couple of weeks. So I will be going to have an intrauterine ultrasound next Monday. Yippee!!! (Can you hear the sarcasm?)

AND, I just found out that one of the nephews who is supposed to be helping out with my younger son's Court of Honor for making Eagle Scout won't be able to come, so we're scrambling to find a replacement.

BUT, all this doesn't mean I get to eat myself silly, yell at anyone, or otherwise get into a funk, right???

I try to remember that I am only responsible for my part: what I say and do.

Do I really want to be angry at my husband because he failed to do what he said or what I'd like him to do?

Or do I want a clean stove?

Sometimes it is both!

Good question: what are our own physical changes when we're stressed? I tend to talk faster, listen less, and usually end up yelling or talking very slowly, like the person who is stressing me out is mentally challenged. Which they're not ~ they're just disagreeing with me.

I find my biggest stressor is when someone (meaning the hubby and 2 adults sons who still live with us) says they will do something, then never get around to it. Like hubby told me last week he'd clean the stove, but he hasn't yet. So I either get mad every time I see the dirty stovetop, or I clean it myself and feel resentful. Neither is a good solution to my sanity, yet I can't come up with a good middle ground.

I just noticed that my voice tone changes also. Hmmmm...

Frustration that something is done wrong, me or someone else... anger and stress quickly follow!

You are right... catching the stress in the moment would be so helpful to stop the cycle. I have noticed that when stressed, I touch my hair more often and my breathing changes.

Well, looks like no-one else has this problem. I've asked people close to me to ask me if I've noticed that I'm feeling stressed, or to ask me to notice how I'm feeling, to prompt me to think about it. Hopefully this will help me, but I'm keen to hear any other strategies people have tried.

I have found some great techniques for dealing with stress, using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (a mindfulness based approach), but sometimes I have difficulties recognising that I am actually stressed 'in the moment', because I am so focussed on doing what needs to be done, that I don't realise I am actually feeling stressed and need to apply them!

Does anyone else have this problem? How are you working to overcome it?
