leadagent1 thanks for the ideas. I do stress the small stuff and need to put in earphones and listen to music and just let it slide down my back like water off a duck so to speak. But I will look into some of the things you mentioned thanks.

Have you tried relaxation tapes? I know it sounds hokey but I used to be keyed up about a lot of things easily. I have learned to relax more. I do use aroma therapy and essential oils sometimes too for relaxation. The biggest thing I learned was to let the little things go. Try to think about what really matters, will this affect me a year from now, a month from now a week, a day, an hour a minute. A lot of times the things we stress about are not worth our energy and make our hearts heavy. Sorry to ramble, but I would research some relaxation techniques.

My stressor is my 4 yr old grand-daughter. She won't leave until her mom returns off the road in Oct or Nov. Trying to get her to understand I mean what I say is my stress. Trying to teach her what to do an not to do is what gets me going. Besides alot of it is hormonal also. I can't get my dr. to understand that and that stresses me. I just let stuff bother me and have to learn to deal with what doesn't go my way. That is why I'm here.

My goal is to find some way to deal with stress besides eating! Stress leads me to the kitchen cabinet or even the break room at work (which is way more unhealthy than my cupboards!)

My goals for this challenge are:

1- No longer beat myself up or accept any condemnation when I mess up.

2- Not be so sensitive when it comes to people not being nice, or being unfair. Not let other's negativity get to me. Instead to just let it roll off by back and stay cool.

3- Not worry about what other people do or say (in general, but especially at my job) but just to do the best I can and be the best me I can be.

4- Learn when to say no.

5- Keep a stress journal (my SP blog 1x week)

6-To not push myself so hard like my habit has been before.

I know this is kind-of-lengthy really, but thank you for reading and listening! :-)

I'm not really stressed or even bored. What's bothering me is the vacation I had planned to start this weekend isn't happening because of my injury I sustained 2 1/2 weeks ago. I've been planning it for most of a year now. So, I'm feeling kinda blue right now. emoticon I need to have a good cry right now. I probably will before I go to bed.

I'm currently on stress-leave from my job. I've been off for 2 weeks already but every day, a dozen or more times a day, I loop work situations through my head looking for a solution. I need to stop that because it is keeping me in a high state of anxiety. My goal this week is to be conscious of my own thoughts & to interrupt any work-related thoughts with a happy memory... or a little dance... or some deep breathing.

My stress busting techniques were challenged this week when I had an important "test' done at a hospital(painful) and I used some of the techniques learned.... it really helped me get through.

I found my goal. I joined a team I found through Emotional Eaters called 100 days by Linda Spangle. Its a book that gives you a challenge every day for 100 days and the URL has free downloading accompanying information. I am going to follow it once I get the book.

In case anyone is interested, here is the link for the Spark team that is specifically devoted to the 100 Days book by Linda Spangle. I hope it works because I can never copy these correctly.

www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/groups_indiv
idual.asp?gid=21194&gr

The 2nd URL is a way to buy the book and get the free information.

I think it will help with the stress occupying myself with other things.

take care

Hi, just joined the challenge. I'm in medical school and studying for my board exams. Before school I was fairly good at managing stress but since I moved away from my friends for school. My wife got me on Sparkpeople a few years ago when I started gaining weight in school and now I want to reduce stress to be more focused and study better.

I joined this challenge because I have always had an issue dealing with stress in my life. This time I really can't shelve the issues that are causing me stress right now and I need to learn how to deal with it in a healthy manner.

I am hoping that I'll learn some stress management skills from this challenge.

I joined this challenge because at some point in my life I had forgotten about myself and spent 100% of my time tending to others. In doing this it has affected me emotionally, physically and spiritually and it seems as if my life has crumbled around me. Joining this site, this group, this way of life has opened my eyes and helped me to realize the necessary adjustments that need to be made but I know I can't do it alone. I'm praying this continues me in the right direction and that I learn patience and consistency where it pertains to me so that I provide a positive example for my children and live a healthy, happy and long life. I salute all of you for trying and I have faith we all will succeed!

Almost the end of week one for me. My goal was to buy a printer ink cartridge so I could print important documents I need for a future work project. Happy to say the cartridge was purchased. Now on to week two goal of typing up and printing all the documents I need to print. When I finish, a lot of stress will be alleviated. But, baby steps. The first week goal completed now onto the next.

My goals for this challenge are to learn ways to get a handle on the level of stress I feel in my daily life. I am an expert in making a mountain out of a mole hill and stressing like crazy over almost everything in my life. This really doesn't help when trying to live a happier, healthier, more relaxed lifestyle.
I am planning on incorporating yoga and meditation into my daily life as a way to help me focus and deal with the stress that typically consumes me.

Life's so uncertain, eat dessert first!

I joined this group due to the amount of stress in my life right now which I don't need. My family has a history of high blood pressure and "knock on wood" I have not had mine up high yet though I have come close at times. I want to be able to relax easily and not be in a constant state of worry. My goals are to able to manage my stress, not to sweat the little stuff, and not always to take everything personally. My temper sometimes gets the best of me, so if I am able to manage my stress better I will be able to control my temper better.

I joined this group because my eye was twitching and I my neck was disappearing from stress. Seriously, though, I have decided that if I am going to take this path to a healthier me, then I am going to do more than just try to loose weight. A healthier me means that I want to enjoy life more and stress less, so here I am.

My goals are to learn how to deal with everyday stress in a healthier way, not just by holding everything in. I am using walking, breathing techniques, and separating some time for myself to help me achieve this goal.

My goal is to find positive outlets for stress. I'm currently dedicating part of each evening to exercise, and that change has really helped. However, I must find another hobby, as I'm in Las Vegas and will need something to keep myself occupied during the excessively hot summer months.

I joined the Stress challenge because I want to rely more on positive ways to deal with my stress. It isn't going to go away- I need to stop binging to cope with it.

currently, I use exercise and knitting to lower my stress levels, both very rewarding ways to cope but when it's really bad I still resort to binging.

Goals: Pray more for guidance
Stop binging
Involve myself in positive activities

My Goals:
-Get 7-8 hours of sleep a night
-Exercise 5 days a week
-SLOW DOWN and don't feel the need to plan every minute, and always be "on the go"

I read this really great quote the other week that I turned into a poster in my house:
"Whatever you don't recognize, you won't celebrate. Whatever you don't celebrate, you won't enjoy. Whatever you don't enjoy, won't last." It just reminds me that though there are always things to see, places to go, and things that "need to be done," you cannot let this get in the way of living and enjoying the beauty that is nature and life around us.

FATCAT216,

You have a full plate. About 6 years ago my mother had a stroke and she was living with us at the time. Luckily my husband and kids were able to help shoulder the task of taking care of her. After her stroke she became a bit aggressive and there was so much that I did that she was displeased with. It was almost 2 years before she got back to acting more like her historic self. Luckily she made about a 85% recovery and is able to live on her own again. I would like to commend you on taking care of Mom, so many people are not able to do so. Best wishes for a full recovery and may you be blessed with patience. emoticon

I am the full time caretaker to a parent who had a stroke along with a full time job. I was blessed to be able to work from home to do this - God does work in mysterious ways. This being said, the stress is tremendous. I know I need to decrease stress for my own health.

This is week #1 and so far so good. I find that walking gives me a much needed me time and getting fit to boot.

I eat when stressed (other emotions too) so findings ways to cope without turning to food.

I would like to take things more in stride.

I would like to let more things just roll off of me.

I would like to find more ways to have a little fun now and then.

Stress is a strange thing....I have different stressers but the main one I have been able to identify is that I have this urge to help people. Sometimes I am compelled on my own because I care about the person and sometimes they ask me for help because they are struggling. I have decided that when I am asked I need to asses the situation and determine if they are genuinely asking for help or are they look to me to shoulder their stress? If they are genuinely looking for help and I can offer advice I will do that. However, I will NOT shoulder anyone else's stress any more. I still have minor children at home and I will help them but everyone else need not be a priority on my agenda. I need to stand strong to that concept.

Sleep makes a huge difference in stress. So important to get enough sleep. emoticon I know it has made a huge difference to me to be able to sleep 7-8 hours a night. And my body feels better when I sleep right. Also, too much sleep or too little sleep can cause weight gain or make it difficult to lose weight. I wish you much success and 8 hours of sleep every night! emoticon emoticon Mary Beth

I have to admit, for me, sleep makes a big difference. Lack of sleep has consistently been a big problem, with me averaging about 5 hours per night. Since I have a "new attitude" about stress and have been using some coping techniques, I am reacting better to the stressors and my sleep is improving. I'm not perfect, but I am getting better! emoticon

I finished week one....blogged a few times about my stress triggers. Most of my stress seems to come from things that I can't control, like traffic or things at work. But the biggest thing for me (that I did not blog about yet) is lack of sleep! I am just so busy and I don't get enough sleep - last night, only four hours and I felt it!

I had a good week last week meeting my week one goals. I exercised and stayed calm when my hubby was acting like an idiot. Al anon helps me greatly with this. Sleeping better is good. Overall, a stress free week for the most part.

I started this challenge back in March. But since I've been away from it for over a month, I decided that it is only right to start at the beginning again.
My goals are to practice meditation at least one time during the day. Or maybe more often.
Continue to be physically active, eating healthy active, and mentally healthy. Also, not to be so hard on myself if I should backtrack at times.

My goal is implement the tip from one of the articles:
Minute 1: Grounded ~ deep breathing, reminding myself where I am... stay with it.
Minute 2: Reality ~ This one was really important for me. My parents are sick and siblings are just fighting and bickering about this. So a LOT of bad things are being said. So, I'll just share what the article had:
"Minute 2: Reality Check
Once you’re calm enough to start thinking productively, put all those thoughts that are clamoring for attention inside your head through a quick reality check. Here are several very common thought patterns that have no place in reality. Do any of these apply to you?
All or nothing thinking
Example: You go over your calorie limit or eat something on your “forbidden” list, and then decide to keep eating because you’ve already “blown it” for today. Reality: Weight loss is not a one-day event. If you stop overeating now, you’ll gain less and have less to re-lose later. That’s something to feel good about!

Reading your own thoughts into someone else’s words
Example: Someone made a mildly critical or unsupportive remark to you, and you feel completely devastated. Reality: The more bothered you are by such remarks, the more likely it is that you are being overly critical of yourself. When you treat yourself with respect, what others say won’t matter nearly so much.

Either-Or thinking
Example: You make a mistake or have a bad day and feel like a complete and hopeless failure. Reality: No one does well all the time. Mistakes are a necessary and valuable opportunity to learn—if you don’t waste them by getting down on yourself.

Taking care of other people’s business
Example: Something is going badly for someone you care about, and you feel responsible, or pressured to fix it. Reality: People need to learn from their own problems. You aren’t doing anyone a favor by trying to fix things just to make yourself feel better."

This was helpful..Thank you De-Stress in 3 Minutes or Less
Stop Emotional Eating Before It Starts
-- By Dean Anderson, Behavioral Psychology Expert

Minute 3: Perspective. This was really nice too. I mean the 2nd minute step is the equivalent to most people saying "Just don't worry about what others think" , but it does just resolve it and we all know this.... This perspective step does. Asking myself, "What really is the issue?", "DO I have all the facts?"

I really like DLBeckham's list. emoticon

For me: the main thing that helps me deal with some of the stresses in my life is taking action to resolve them. I agree that working out "works off" the build up of tension which is very important but I have some long standing stressors in my life that I really need to find a better solution (if possible) to them and then work towards that: for me, that means finding a way to bring more money into my "operating budget". I'm not saying that I will be able to accomplish this by the end of this challenge but I do hope that I can pursue some "ideas" during this time.

My stress busting goals are to first and foremost to slow down and enjoy the journey. If I am not enjoying my journey I will stop and take some time for me so I can refocus. I will go for a walk, exercise, take a bath, or just find a quiet place to take a few minutes and breathe. I will meditate daily, even if it is for 5 minutes.

I will say "no" to the things and people that don't bring me joy or satisfaction. I will recognize and honor my limits. I will not push myself to the point of exhaustion. I will take care of my body so it can take care of me. I will eat healthy foods, exercise (not over train), and get plenty of rest. I will socialize with positive, upbeat people. Most of all I will not take myself or others too seriously. I will have fun, laugh, and enjoy this life I have.

Integrity- The ability to be honest in the face of adversity.

Looking at my stress journal, most of it is coming from circumstances that will change within the next month. DH's fractured ankle is healing, the infection in the one pin site is receding and I'm getting better at changing his dressings daily. So at the moment, the biggest stressor is driving, especially the trip to the medical building at the hospital. So my goals are:

1) Not to avoid driving the way I have been doing. Maybe even get to my knitting group tomorrow in that we don't have an appt. with the surgeon until the following week.

2) Not to spend as much time as I have been on this computer and do a bit more cleaning.

3) Try to find more confidence in what I'm able to do and not feel guilty about what I can't.

I have several stressors in my life right now.

(1) My son is still in college and depends on me for financial support and is not at all cooperative when it comes to understanding my MS - he thinks that it is a fake disease that I can not be in a wheelchair one day and be up and walking the next so he makes things worse most times.

(2) I have been told by the heart and MS doctors that I cannot drive so I have to rely on someone else to drive me places so I feel like a prisoner in my own home - so BIG stressor - I want to drive again and regain my freedom - I was told I could not drive until I received a heart transplant and last week I was told that I no longer qualified for the transplant list.

So these are my main stressors - I have lost 131.6 pounds in an attempt to get placed on the heart transplant list. I have been doing a 100 minute a day for 100 day challenge for the past 50 days now of exercise averaging over 150 minutes of exercise a day. So that has been my plan to resolve the stress- like I said the heart transplant has been taken off as an option so I will continue to do my exercise and to lose more weight I want to lose around 20-30 more pounds. My blood pressure was 68/42 so maybe I can get it to go up as I lose more weight and my medication is adjusted and we will see where I go from here.

Well, sounds to me like you have the best attitude, about your husband! you have alot on your plate taking care of him..... that would stress me out!!! and hands off from a distance sounds like the best way to go....only you can be the judge of that..... and look at you and how much weight you have lost-- wow!!! If you can do that, you can accomplish just about anything!

My number one stressor is figuring out how to relate to my husband as he struggles with Parkinson's and too many dangerous falls. At the same time he is angry and stubborn so trying to help him always leads to arguments and sharp words. I don't like myself in this mode. My goals: 1. accept his doing things his way as he fights his disease by letting him struggle and be slow, knowing that he will 'get there'. 2. accept that I can't 'help' him out of his dilemma and anger 3. speak kindly and gently, but hands off.

Reviewing my stress journal I noticed that work is one factor ( running helps), but the biggest stressor comes from my two young adult children who live at home. This shouldn't be my stressor but their lack of direction is...

Goals
Keep running or biking
Keep tracking
Journal
Leave work on time( lol won't happen but at least I might leave earlier)

Consistency, that's my goal for today-

1 -stick with meal plan
2- exercise 3 times a week ( at least)
3- morning stretch
4- night stretch
5-WATER- WATER- WATER

However, when boredom sets in OMG.. Thursday, I ate mint Milano cookies,

I love using my little sticky note check list next to my PC, it really does help me daily. Reduces so much stress!

And a reply to (Ruth) we use to call our tickling session with our kids the "tickle bug" they loved it when the "tickle bug' would come and get them! Such fun!!! emoticon

I have reviewed my stress journals and decided upon these goals for this challenge:
1. Drink 8 cups of water daily BEFORE having diet soda.
2. Work on de-cluttering my house just 10 minutes at a time.
3. Take 5 minutes a day to practice breathing, staying grounded and meditating to quiet the inner voice chatter in my head.
4. Pray each night for guidance from God and willingness to change my behavior for the better, just one step at a time.
5. Enjoy playing with my children daily...taking time for tickles and giggles.
6. Keep active, wear my Spark People tracker, and keep moving daily to enjoy better health.
I have three more weeks to incorporate these in to my daily life, and I know that I will be better off from completing this challenge.
Ruth

Writing journals is a great help, but my big goal, still, is avoiding procrastination. It is a killer.

Trying to keep a small list of items to cross off each day-- keeps me in check and focused.... I keep it next to my computer and then I don't stray off doing something else. It sorta keeps me on task, then I feel so accomplished and not stressed over getting nothing done at the end of the day! This seems to help me thus far. Yeah, a small accomplishment.

Doing fairly well on goals, but finding that just because I am in bed by midnight -- and it has happened now and then -- I'm not asleep. Furthermore, I'm still going to sleep at about 2 to 3 a.m., because that has been my sleeping habit.

Will keep working on it.

As I think about it, my goal to not procrastinate is not going all that well, either. (Even now I am on SP when I could be taking care of a lot of things I have put off, that are not really that hard.) I've got an idea: log off SP and tackle one of those projects.

I am always doing for everyone else before i do for me. This goal setting has taking some hard thinking, because it means that someone will not get the time i usually give them. I am buckling down and doing this for me. My goals for this challenge.
1. measure my food each meal
2. do at least a 5 minute meditate/stretch
3. stick to more than a gallon of lemon water a day
4. at least one 10 minute walk in my yard a day.

I am sticking to just these 4 goals right now so i dont get over whelmed and give up.

Consistency, that's my goal for today-

1 -stick with meal plan
2- exercise 3 times a week ( at least)
3- morning stretch
4- night stretch
5-WATER- WATER- WATER

So far so good, although yesterday I ate a large bag of potato chips. I think it was more out of boredom...

Hi! I am joining this challenge for a number of reasons, and am happy to be here.
I have Panic Disorder (which I am learning to control without Xanax or any other pharm) and have been in the Army for 18 years. I hike, read and do many other enjoyable things but one thing stresses me out and BAM I am out for a week. My nerves are fried, so I'm trying to get more real ideas to incorporate into my life...instead of just reading books that people write to make money - I'm looking for real life inspiration since I've read all of those books.
I have quite a bit of weight to lose, and this is my year to do it - I know it!
My goal is to be able to deal with immediate stress without having to deal with my overload for the entire next week.
