I want to reduce screen time this week and also to try eating out less! Yesterday was a great day and my son only watched tv for 2 hours and we ate dinner together at home. Hopefully we can continue this trend.

This week I am going to hold a family meeting tomorrow (MON), and focus first on the set yourself up for success, because I would like us to go through our cupboards and get rid of the processed crap, and then head to the grocery store for some healthy alternatives. I also want to reduce screen time, because with it being hot outside, we do watch alot of tv :(

I am going to focus on reducing screen time. We tend to have the TV on all day long as background noise. So I am going to make sure that it is not just constantly on and limit how much they watch. I also need to ensure that they are not on the Xbox for too long. I am pretty good with this usually but just need to stay consistent

I do plan my meals every week but don't always stick to them which leads to wasted food. Therefore I will commit to sticking to my plan once it is made.

My goals for this week are to plan my family's meals out for the week, create a shopping list for the whole week, cook at least three meals at home for us all to sit down at the table together and eat and to start cutting back on some of the time we spend in front of screens by getting outside more often.

My goals for this week are to make sure I exercise every day before I watch any tv, plan dinners with my family to make sure we have healthy meals planned that everyone likes, and make simple changes with menu items to make them healthier. I will also keep a running shopping list on the fridge so when we run out of healthy items they get put on the shopping list immediately. I will also talk to my family about changes we are making and why. And I will get them all involved with meal decisions so that we will all get healthier together.

Reduce screen time.
*I'll attempt to accomplish this by.. spending an hour writing a letter to a family member out of town. BY HAND. ;) We'll all do this if everyone's home.

Hold a family meeting.
This one's a little harder... but I'll make a list of perks, and have them help me brainstorm some actions.

Set yourself up for success
I'll print off extra pages for my organization binder (for to-do and grocery lists), and create a list of possible screen-free activities / meal ideas to put beside the calendar.

My fiancé has started motivating me. He has started doing home exercises with me, sit ups, push ups etc. He actually thanked me for pushing him to work out too. He's going to start weighing in weekly with me. My son who's five asked me yesterday if we can "play" exercise, he at least thinks its fun haha.
So my goals are to drop at least 1.5lbs a week, keep my fiancé motivated because he wants to tone up and keep my son thinking exercise is fun.

Week 1 Action Plan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Reduce screen time. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We homeschool so we control screen time because it makes life simpler. The kids don't ask me to watch tv. We use the computer for educational purposes only. The kids are in sports and piano which keeps them busy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Hold a family meeting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My kids are elementary age and part of my homeschool curriculum for them is to teach them healthy lifestyles. We get books and magazines (my favorite is ChopChop | The Fun Cooking Magazine For Families). Our pediatrician is big into getting kids involved in cooking. So nice to have such great resources at hand.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Set yourself up for success. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sticker charts are HUGE in our house. I do assign chores like feeding the kitties, clearing the table, helping with dishes, and cleaning rooms. I still brush my kids teeth after every meal because they just can't do that right now. No cavities so far!!!!
I tell you what! My kids love bragging about their chores. They are so proud of themselves;-) It is a great way to build confidence!
I am doing the Official 30-Day 'Fit Food' Challenge in June. I am planning on getting the groceries on May 27. I printed off the list of groceries for the month. I am a planner.
So far this week things have been good with my 2 kids. They are both on board which makes it easier. I was very surprised at this and my 13yr old daughter was very excited and has been looking up healthy recipes and school lunch ideas. We live in the middle of no where and went into the city yesterday and she packed lunches and snacks for us. I was very impressed and proud. The tv is a little more difficult as we are still covered in snow and it has been cold. We have been challenging each other with Just Dance and they seem to think it's funny seeing me dance, but whatever works!
My goal is to find fun and active things to do together. I have started thinking about exercise as just one more thing on my to do list instead of finding activities we can look forward to. I also want to start walking to places nearby instead of driving.
I have kinda been doing this challenge inadvertently. Since I have begun losing weight I have taken over much of the cooking. I will continue planning dinners ahead and trying new recipes at least 2x's/ month. I will work on getting my Mom to workout with me(DS goes to gym), and when the weather gets better I will take DGS on walks with me, and try to get my Dad outside as well.
This week my goals are to get organized by planning meals and preparing accordingly, to get out and do some sort of physical activity with my guy and my daughter (my daughter and I went for a 1m walk- she asked if we could do it again today- but the wind is blowing about 50mph right now!!! But I was happy to hear her ask!!). I discussed the challenge with my family before we joined- we're all in!!!
God is good- no matter what!
we have homemade dinner with the kids everynight, except Wednesday and Sunday when they eat at Church. But need to get more routine with saying grace. Meal goals are hard, because I need to loose weight but my youngest needs to gain, he is underweight, and the oldest needs a lot of calories because he is so active.
To continue our progress from the last couple of weeks of increasing the kids fruit & veg intake. This week's goal is to try at least 2 new foods.
To get out for at least 2 family walks and a swim together
We already limit screen time to 1 hour a day for the kids, so no changes there.
My goal is to be more active WITH my kids. This is hard because I work 2 jobs/60 hours a week so there isn't alot of "mom time" to go around. I'm thinking some Wii time will fit nicely....until the snow melts & the temps are above 40 degrees!!!!
I just joined this challenge yesterday. My family is definitely addicted to TV. Example: I decided yesterday no tv after work/school. My daughter and I get home around 5:45- I tell her to start homework and I start dinner. My husband got home at 7:30 and immediately turned the TV on-the craziest part was that he then went into the basement to work on something. I told him that there was no reason to turn the TV on, it's just habit and we need to break it.
It's so bad that my daughter can't sit down for dinner, ride in a car, sit in a restaurant wihtout the Ipod, Kindle fire or my cell phone to play games. She's only 6 so this habit should not be too hard to break. Wish me luck this week!
I'm also going to meal plan for the week.
Our family goal will be set a routine we can stick with. It will be flexible, but will address things like meals, activities, and computer/iPhone/iPad/tv time. One small step at a time.
Reading the posts here, tv seems to be an issue in a lot of families! My son and I both have special diets that we have to get used to eating, that is one reason I joined. Son...only likes salty, greasy, foods, me...just do not like anything hardly...so, we are making our plates more green, doing portion sizes instead of Jethro plates, and leaving fast food alone. Giving up the fast food is hard, and it is hard to cook a balanced meal when I have gotten used to fast food it. No more hamburger helper nor frozen meals. That is our goal for this first and probably second week.
I started this challenge a few days before Thanksgiving...a lot of pie and stuffing but it was also an opportunity to get some quality food such as roast turkey, as opposed to the hamburger helper my family had been eating. Also, I did buy some extra veggies to snack on. :)
TV is an issue in out house, but our very busy schedule effects our ability to eat healthy foods. TV gets in the way of us connecting. So my goal this week, gulp, will be to limit TV to after dinner, and to check that homework and chores are done. This will include a family meeting to set this up.
My other goal is healthy meals that the kids will like and fill them up in appropriate portions. That one is hard bc it adds to the hectic nature of the week. Also we may not be able to sit together every night, but how about 3 nights
Meal planning is a must and having a healthy back up when the plan just isn't going to work that night.
Keeping the little guy away from the IPad. We did start using a timer and that seems to work. I could bust out the Wii tonight or since the weather is still pretty good I am thinking a few last bike rides or a walk around the block.
My 4 year old and my boyfriend are big tv junkies, and that usually goes hand in hand with snacking. So my goals are to get both of them out side for an hour each day and to substitute their processed snacks with fresh veggies and fruit, and limit how many snacks they eat a day.
If you change nothing, nothing will change!
My goal is to do better with meal planning, and cook things we all can eat as a family, instead of me cooking something separate all of the time. My son is 25 with 3 children, and sometimes we actually enjoy walking to a park or go to a theme park, which there is a lot of walking going on. emoticon emoticon
There is a creative child in each of us. Open your heart and invite it out to play.
My family consists of myself and my son who is 21 hehe , So when I read about the limiting the tv and net time , I thought Good lord how can I do that ! Believe me hes a great kid but this is where its going to be tough ! lol. I think what I can do is perhaps suggest a walk or something he likes to do before he gets too involved in games or the computer . I dont know if anyone has any suggestions for trying to motivate teens or young adults ! lol
My goals are:
1. Get the kids outside, taking walks and playing at parks. One of these every day.
2. Not eat out, not eat junk
3. Get the older 3 kids using the treadmill each day
4. No tv/wii/computer during the week and limited on the weekend
Except for our youngest (2 years old) we are all in the overweight range and my husband is in the obese range. My older three children are ages 9, 12, and 15. We *can* and *need* to do better, especially for the sake of our childrens' health. I keep putting this off. Not anymore. Today is the starting day.
My goals are to reduce overall screen time (counting time on the i pad too), and really to focus on the quality of all of the food and other products in our household. I want beverages, snacks and meals to all be healthy choices for our family. I'd also like to set a routine where our family does family activities together (exercise) like riding our bikes, going for walks, etc.
Ok, so my goals over these next 4 weeks are to:
Significantly cut down my toddlers TV time! We had been doing so well and then I got slack on it. Now I'm spending more time on the computer and the whole thing is going bad. Gotta get back on track!
Also, I want to make sure I'm making meal plans and grocery lists! I am a woman on a budget but I can't stand bland food! I need to get better at planning what I'm going to cook so that I'm not digging around aimlessly in my cabinets.
We have 4 small goals for the first week.
Goal 1 - 2 - 30 minute blocks of screen time per night. I had him all set to say “No Problem!” until I reminded him it meant all his screens. We are a tech household, so screen time for me is tablets, computers, and smart phones; for him it’s the computer, TV and his iPod. We have tried to limit it in the past then I start working in the evening, and the next thing I know it’s time for him to go to bed and we’ve both been on for 1.5 – 2 hours straight. The limit on screen time applies to me as well (as long as he is awake), so that distraction to monitoring the time will be limited. I often need to work from home in the evenings, but it is all things I can do after he is in bed.
Goal 2 – At least 30 minutes of physical activity together each day. We both study Martial Arts under the same Si-Jo, but with the distractions we have let our training slide. Additionally we have a beagle that could really benefit from walking regularly so she isn’t as bored. With the limit in place on the tech time, finding another 30 minutes (or 2 15 minute blocks) was pretty easy to do.
Goal 3 – Prepping for the next day is something we have really struggled with, but it makes the morning SO must nicer when we do it. We are both making a concerted effort to look at our evening/ before bed routine to see if it is realistic and to stick to it if it is.
Goal 4 – Menus are a must around here. If I don’t do the grocery shopping on the weekend and prep as much of the meals as I can on Sunday, off to Taco Bell we go. Lately I have been in a cooking rut, so he has taken on the goal of coming up with one new healthy meal a week to liven up our dinners.
This week my family challenge goals are:
1. To reduce screen time for the kids. They would stay on the couch all day and relax if they could.
2. Make sure my kids get at least 30 minutes of exercise everyday after school and activities are finished. Any ideas?
3. We have already reduced the process snacks in the house, but to add more healthy foods to their diets. Vegetables are still the enemy.
4. Spend each day enjoying my kids. Life is too crazy and the time is flying by.......
Well I have set up a meal plan for the week and the family know that I want us all to start getting more healthy. Reducing screen time is harder for me. It is sooo cold outside at the moment that I just want to snuggle up inside. I thought it was supposed to be spring!! I am going to try and work out a plan to make sure the kids are getting enough exercise every day.
They are on Easter holidays at the moment and all they want to do is play on the computer so we need to get out and about on their scooters and bikes. We did go for a big walk the other day which was good fun as we were clambering around boulder in a forest by a waterfall but it was so cold that after lunch my four year old got really upset and was crying his eyes out about how cold it was!!
When they are back at school I am going to get back into walking them to and from school which is about a 20 minute walk each way up a very steep hill!
My goal for the first week of this challenge is to get everyone in the house to be more active. We don't do physical activity as a family much but I want to start getting the kids involved in some sort of physical activity everyday. My husband and I are guilty of too much computer time and the kids are guilty of too much TV time. I think that is the biggest challenge for us as a family.
I plan to turn the computers and TVs off when I get home from work and encourage everyone to go for a walk together today and everyday during this challenge. We have a gym membership that has been neglected lately so I'm going to get them all to the gym this week for some cardio and swimming.
My goal with this challenge is to become better about planning meals in advance and shopping with my meals in mind. I have been making healthier meals since joining spark people but we are only eating at the table 1-2 times a week and I would really like to increase it to every night that we are home we eat as a family instead of in front of the tv. The real challenge will be getting my husband on board. My kids are little and they like sitting and talking round the table, but their dad would rather watch sports center, and thinks once a week around the table is enough. Any advice on how to bring him around is welcome, wish me luck.
This week I'm going to put together a meal plan for the next week or two, update and post the children's chore chart, and continue to reinforce early preparation for the following school day (showers at night, lunch packed at night, etc.)
When food shopping this week, I am going to make a conscious effort to ensure my kids have more healthy alternatives. They usually pack a sandwich or a canned chef boyardee hot lunch. I know I can do better than that. I'm going to find some healthier alternatives and go from there.
I am trying to be a good role model for my kids & make sure they are used to living a healthy lifestyle. I think we're actually doing a pretty good job of that, but I'm always looking for new ideas to incorporate. I don't actually have specific goals for this challenge. I'm really just looking for new ideas, seeing if there is anything I haven't thought of yet that might improve our lives.
