My long-term goal is to continue with consistently making meals at home versus purchasing something on the run. As this consistency continues, I will begin to layer in opportunities to make healthier substitutions. Another goal is to create a growing inventory of quick/prep-ahead recipes to use for the evenings I go to the gym.

My long term goals:

Continue to plan out my meals by the week. That helped out immensely when it came to grocery shopping.

Try new things. There are so many recipes to choose from.

Cook for my family at least 5 days a week. I plan on making fast food a thing of the past. Knocking the eating out down to the weekend, and then not every weekend.

This has been a great challenge for me! I've learned tons of new ideas, and gotten some great advice. Thanks!! emoticon

I'm still working on defining these - but basically -
* continue trying new recipes
* planning meals for the week (if not for every day, at least a few)
* continue making and bringing healthy meals for lunch
* feeling more comfortable in the kitchen

I grew up in the era where women made most everything from scratch. That is how I was taught to cook and bake. Sure it is handy to go to the store and buy bread and essentials like that, but I think the best food is prepared at home and cooked with the freshest ingredients.

I was taught to cook by my Grandmother and she just somehow "threw everything together" and a beautiful meal was created. I am fortunate that I have learned that process as well so I am not stuck with having to read recipes for everything. I am always searching for new recipes, however.

I used to listen to my Grandmother hum or sing while she worked away in the kitchen and I guess I am fortunate in that I picked up for myself her love of cooking and providing for her family. I honestly cannot imagine sitting down to a dinner every night and serving and eating a meal out of a box I just took out of the microwave. How boring and most likely unhealthy.

Speaking of cooking, it is time I start the grill. I have a steak thawed, fresh green beans cleaned, potatoes, and fresh watermelon sliced. Time to go cook. Hope everyone stays inspired and makes their own home made foods/meals.

Take care......Julia emoticon

My main long term goal is to continue trying to get the sodium in check. I've learned that when I cook my meals this is much more manageable, but as has already been stated lunch during the work week can be a problem area. I also plan on continuing trying new foods & recopies.

I'd like to thank everyone for sharing, I've learned a lot with your input.

My goal is to start working as much on lunches and breakfasts as I do dinners for the entire family. It's kind of my downfall, not so great first two meals of the day and a super one in the evening. Especially when I work, lunch gets to be whatever sounds good, not what's good for me. There is always something to be working on and improving.

Greetings TROWBRK and others,

If I may I would like to share an idea about trying new recipes. I have been searching for recipes online since I got a computer and the internet. What I do is find the sites (SP recipe site does this) where you can read the comments from reviewers. If it looks good then I copy the recipe and at the bottom write "Reviewers suggest:" then several of their comments to tweak the recipe. I then hang my new recipes on the refrigerator on two clip magnets. Next to my new recipes hangs a small dry erase board on which to write small notes and items to pick up shopping (grocery list). When I hang up a new recipe I write down ingredients I will need to pick up. Next time I go to the store I pick up the ingredients and the recipe is right there and not lost in a file or in the paperwork at my computer desk. It also serves as a daily reminder to look through the new recipes I want to try. Right now I have 15 new recipes on my refrigerator mag-clip.

One other thing I do. After I try a new recipe I rate it for myself and write next to the recipe the date I prepared it and what I would like to try different the next time/or okay as is.

I also try to keep a a couple of folders of lose page recipes in my kitchen next to my cookbooks: 1) new recipes to try in the future; 2) recipes to add to family meals; and 3) one for just breads/biscuits. That is just my system, but it has worked for me.

I hope this has been helpful. Have fun exploring the exciting world of searching for recipes.

My long term healthy cooking goals are to develop at least 8 healthy entrees each for lunch and dinner and 3 for breakfast. This will be the bases for my meal plan.

Try a new food at least once a week. Try a new recipe at least twice a month.

Prepare healthy work lunches on the weekend. Prepare big batches of soup and other entrees on the weekend and freeze as single servings.

Eat out 1-2 times per week for breakfast and once each for lunch and/or dinner. The remaining meals are low fat, low glycemic index, mostly vegetarian meals from my meal plan.

My long term goals are to eat in more by cooking my own foods I think 4 to 5 times a week is a good start for that....I've also gotten my kids involved in the preperation of the foods we now eat...continue to add more fresh fruits and veggies is also one we're working on...with summer here grilling has been big for me....I still have been frying foods at least once a week but I'm trying to fix that as well....cooking is not as bad as I thought it would be

My long term cooking goals are to continue cooking at home at least 4 times a week. During the summer, it's really easy not to go out all the time because all of my friends are out of town, but once vacation time ends, there will surely be more social invitations, and I want to make sure going out to eat every single night doesn't happen anymore! Plus, cooking with my boyfriend gives us some quality time together, and it saves money!

My long-term cooking goal is to quit skipping the produce section of the grocery store. There are so many fruits and vegetables I've never heard of, and certainly never learned to cook with. I could spend years exploring all the exotic options the modern world give us.

I have had it pretty easy over the past year; I haven't had to work, so I've had time to plan ahead. I go back to school in the fall and that's when things will get more complicated. I plan to pack my own healthy lunches (which I already do for my DH)and snacks. I plan to make use of my slow cooker whenever possible; so when I get home at the end of the day, dinner is ready.

I guess at 66 I have always been aware of nutrition and cooking is my passion. I guess i just want to hear other peoples ideas of what they like.
My cooking has changed since coming to the US especially to Maine where we used to have so many seafood choices. They seem to be limited these days with the fishing quotas they have now. I love to cook out of doors, camping etc. I guess my only goal is to continue to hear DH say'My that was good" .

To continue eating more fruits, vegetables, and legumes.

Hello all,

Great topic. I have a couple of goals I have been thinking about incorporating into my life-long style of cooking:
1) more vegetarian recipes,
2) lower my fat content (no drive-thru, very limited deep fried foods, etc.)
3) less red meats with a little chicken & seafood/fish and veggies
4) and of course more fresh foods (unprocessed)

My long term goal is to keep it fresh!

I find it way too easy to fall into a rut, then I get bored and end up more tempted by less healthy food.

my long term goal is to continue to do without sugar, aside from a couple safe products for me..like stevia. The loss of five lbs made me realize how important this is to me. I also plan to eat lots of fruits and vegatables, along with lean protein and complex carbs. Nearly gluten free..and plan to continue this also. I am lucky, since fast food tends to leave me unsatisfied, or with an upset stomach, so no problems here.

I've been cooking healthy for he last 5 years. The only problem I have is the drive thru. I'm such a fast food juckie, so my goal is to avoid the drive thru.

For the moment, my long-term goal is to maintain the new healthier cooking I've been doing, while my paycheck has been dropping a few dollars each week. Healthy cooking on a shoestring budget is a real challenge. The cheaper something is, chances are the more processed it is, thus less healthy for us. Thank goodness it's summer so the produce department is a little cheaper than usual.
