This is an area I need to improve in. I do not have a habit of planning menus a week in advance. I did for the week one assignment. I cook for my husband and I. For breakfast we "do our own thing." Depending on my work day I sometimes cook lunch and dinner for the two of us. I think big batch cooking may be a good tool for us because we are ok with eating leftovers and the same thing for several days. It sure would make shopping easier. Now I shop about every other day for what we need that evening or the next day.

It's a choice to be fit or fat.

I don't usually write my list until Thursday night, or Friday morning, when I plan the meals for the next week. I'll do a quick scan of my cupboards and fridge to see what staples we need, too. If I run out of something in the middle of the week, I'll write it down so I don't forget.

Just my son and I in a small apartment - and we have a small white board on the fridge. There we write items we need - and this becomes my grocery list. Mostly I buy just what is on the list and add ingredients for a new recipe I want to try. My goal is to try a new recipe each week.

Just finished reading Chris Downie's book, "The Spark." One of the sections dealt with healthy food choices, of course! They printed a list of 100 "Super Foods," foods that really pack a lot of nutrition into a few calories. I looked on the website, and it is available in the Nutrition articles section.

I've posted that list on my refrigerator next to my shopping list, and every week I intend to make sure to pick up at least a couple of these Super Foods. Having that list stare me in the face will remind me to expand my food choices--in a healthy way this time.

I write my list on a used envelope from the week's mail, and tuck my coupons inside the envelope. Coming with a plan definitely cuts down on impulse buying (or, in my case, forgetfulness)

I do almost the same thing, but don't usually go to multiple stores. I go to two stores, one for the standard items and another for fresh seafood, unusual ingredients and special fruits, cheeses, or other items. The list really helps me cut back on impulse buying.

Using my Word program I designed a blank shopping list divided into 6 food groups/categories (Fruit/Vege, Dairy, Canned, Boxed, Meat, Misc). It prints out on half a sheet of copy paper so I get 2 per sheet. It’s posted with a magnetic clip to my refrigerator along with a pencil, so I can easily jot down things I need or think of all week long. Once a week I go through my recipes for the next week and add any special ingredients needed. Day before marketing day, I’ll pull up the online grocery store ads and see what’s on sale—and code my shopping list with little symbols to remind me what store has the best deal on specific items. Yes… I make an occasion out of marketing and will stop at 3 different stores to get their best values!
