I once read an article that basically said you need to pick your battles. The lady who wrote it said she was always annoyed that her DH left dishes in the sink. Then she changed her thinking a bit. She started looking at the situation as Hey, he leaves them in the sink and not all over the house. Then it wasn't a problem anymore.

I know this isn't quite the same as someone breaking a promise, but maybe there is another icky job that he could be responsible for instead of dishes.

BTW Linda -- next to SP, Flylady is my favorite website!

Organization, stick to it, clean as you do it. If your not physically challenged, and you are healthy, you should be able to do this with little help. I am physically challenged, and in poor health and I clean the kitchen cook and do dishes. My son, does what I ask him to do (carry a bag of garbage out to the dumpster, check the mail, if raining or snowing, I check mail other days. It makes me feel good I can do this. I use to have to have home health aids to do it. I actually feel excited when my dishes are done and my stainless steel sink is shining. Maybe
flylady.com will help you, it helped me a lot awhile back.

It might be an instance of something that is important to you so you'll have to do it. I struggle with the same sort of issue, and I've found that it's really not worth the fight. Sure, it seems unfair, but there are probably plenty of things around that house that he cares about and so wants done; he can do those. And if he's not willing to do anything, THEN he's a bum. Otherwise, it's just priorities. Keep having fun cooking, it's worth it in the end!

I guess I'm not principled enough, but I learned long ago if I want something cleaned to my standards, I have to do it. DH generally cleans up after dinner, but I find stuff left on pots or not cleaned so now I know what I need to do. It clearly doesn't bother him, and it clearly bothers me.

Unfortunately I have to tell you it is hard to get help with the cleaning up of the kitchen regardless if you are cooking healthy or not. I have gotten into the habit of doing it myself most f the time and then asking for help the other times. For me it is just something you have to get used to. We don't eat out a lot anyway so if I don't cook we don't eat most days. I have even gotten to a point where I would tell the hubby if you don't help me we will have to cook our own meals and if you don't clean it up you don't eat. I wish you luck!

Ok, I have totally fallen in love with Healthy Cooking. I'm embracing it wholeheartedly. I made a deal with my hubby that I'd shop & cook if he'd clean the kitchen. I've held up my end of the bargain, and I even clean as I go. The first day there were only a few dishes and the ones I'd used had been rinsed, his plate had not. It went downhill from there. Now the kitchen is such a wreck I don't want to/can't cook in it anymore. I'm frustrated and upset. I'm thinking I'll just have to do it all, since it is what I want and I'm not giving up on healthy cooking and eating. {sigh} emoticon
